AFP - The American embassy in Yemen closed on Sunday in response to ongoing Al-Qaeda threats to attack US interests, an embassy statement said.
"The US Embassy in Sanaa is closed today, January 3, 2010, in response to ongoing threats by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to attack American interests in Yemen," said the statement posted on the embassy's website.
On Thursday the US mission sent a warden message to American citizens in the country reminding them of the "continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against Amercian citizens and interests throughout the world."
AQAP had called on Monday for further attacks on Westerners in the Arabian Peninsula as it claimed the failed Christmas Day attack on a US airliner.
"We call upon every Muslim who cares about his religion and doctrine to assist in expelling the apostasies from the Arabian Peninsula, by killing every crusader who works at their embassies or other places, declare it an all-out war against every crusader on Mohammad's peninsula on land, air and sea," said an AQAP statement.

The administration is on a dangerous road in relation to the CIA. The UK Telegraph had an article yesterday about how the Knicker Bomber's spiritual mentor, American-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki is still able to spread his jihadist message at British educational institutions via video link. Mr. al-Awlaki isn't the only one either. Several other Muslim clerics have been allowed to spread the message of jihad and hatred of the filthy infidels. Meanwhile the New York Times has an article about the rogues gallery of internet jihad clerics like Anwar al-Awlaki and Abdullah el-Faisal. Missing in all of this is an explaination for how these clerics appeal to Muslims and what exactly should be done about it.
Does anyone know why Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with their high degree [by Islamic standards anyway] of openness, tolerance and Westernization (mini skirts, etc) have been granted a pass by AQ, and have never been attacked? I really don't get it....

I think this situation is a bit past the law enforcement stage, but do not tell that to President Obama. Also, he seems to be a bit slow in drawing conclusions from evidence provided over a week ago about the Yemeni connection and al-Qaida. I am not hopeful that such a sluggard will improve over time. President Obama seems to have a nearly flat learning curve.
I once knew someone whose father worked in Dubai. They visited there quite often, going several times a year. They said that one of the reasons AQ doesn't target them is that the emirs of Dubai (or whoever runs the place) pay AQ a lot of money to not attack them.
If this is true, it means AQ gets a form of jizya from its Islamic brothers to use to finance terrorism elsewhere. I guess these emirs have the foresight to know that if they get bombed, Western investment in the UAE will markedly decrease and they will be the worse off. Hence, it's easier, still profitable (and helping their Islamic brothers by the way) if they can get Western investment, make billions per year and pay a small slice to AQ to keep them away. It's a form of zakat that we wouldn't hear about that much.
Thanks - I've heard things like that before, but then what I don't understand is that it makes it like AQ is a well-defined monolith, with no "rogue" branches. For example, let's suppose the $$ is going Straight into OBL's ATM account, and that that's enough to buy off all of AQ. Will, what about some other "I'm more Islamic than you are" offshoot? It's like the Mafia families - unless you have a broad **and enforcible** agreement or one ruthlessly dominant "family" you will get ruinous competition to shake them down and it never ends. Qur'an 2:193 reads: "And fight the unbelievers until religion be for Allah alone." The ultimate goal is for the *entire world* to be free of "Jews and crusaders". Already in Muhammed's lifetime, he was threatening the Byzantine Empire.
But the Arabian peninsula, the "Land of the two Holy places" is considered by Muslims the nub of the world, especially subject to besmirchment by the very presence of non-Muslims.

Your point is not well taken. The translation says "Arabian Peninsula". I ask what the Arabic text plainly says. What is infuriating about that?
