When I was a detective, we would be very careful to get as much info/intel from suspects as we could before we had to read them their rights.

The core principal of the Miranda rule is that if a defendant is subjected to a custodial interrogation without being read his rights, the information gained cannot be used in the prosecution. Otherwise, the information gained in the custodial interrogation, and the "fruits of the poisonous tree" cannot be used at trial.
However, where there is already adequate evidence of guilt, there is no need to Mirandize a defendant, because even if statements are gained from the defendant in an interrogation cannot be used against him at trial, who cares? The other evidence (like passenger testimony that he tried to ignite the PETN sewed into his underwear, and the burns on the defendant's private parts) will be sufficient for a conviction anyway. They could have interrogated him, used the evidence for national security, and not used it for his trial.
So, the Justice Department, and the Attorney General in particular, really screwed up on this one, even if they wanted to try him as a regular defendant.
But the most important way in which the Obama Administration screwed up in this case was by letting the Justice Department get involved in this case at all. This guy should have been handed over to authorities for interrogation and warehousing in Guantanamo, processed by a military tribunal, and held until the end of the "war", a war which has only been going on for 1380 years or so now, unless another punishment would be found appropriate.
But why might a punishment be appropriate if he was taken as a prisoner in a war? Well, didn't enemy combatants who were out of uniform used to get hung rather than released back to their "briar patch?"
He's probably sitting somewhere and crying. He went from would-be martyr to laughingstock in less than a day. That's got to be eating at him, as Muhammedans cannot bear to be the object of mockery and laughter.

It's unfortunate that so many fell for the Lovenstein Institute hoax which said Bush's IQ was 91. There's no such institute or doctor by that name. The report was admitted on the humor mailing list site linkydinky.com as a hoax, yet it seems many can't admit to the truth due to their hatred of Bush.
However, an analysis of Kerry's and Bush's SAT scores and Officer admission tests indicated that Bush was slightly ahead of Kerry, and kerry wasn't stupid, he was just a traitor by the constitutional definition. From that analysis it's estimated Bush's IQ between 125 and 130. By the way, Gore scored about 133 on IQ tests. Carter's IQ score which was released was around 172.
The mistake many people make is equating as the same IQ and wisdom. It's my personal opinion that Carter will go down as one of the most ineffective presidents. Clinton was impeached because he'd rather prevaricate than tell the truth. Bush Jr. I believe has done serious damage to the rule of constitutional law and reenergized the march toward socialism with the bailouts. Thirdly, there is some benefit to our country and the fight against Islamofascism for us to be perceived as fair and for maintaining the values that make us better than others. It is very speculative how much good info we lost by reading Umar his civil rights. I see no reason to assume that great prejudice to the fight against al Qaida was committed by the US government by taking the high road.

That is part of the problem. If I am a cartoonist, newspaper editor, book publisher, motion picture company, or elected representative and if I make a high-profile statement extremely critical about Mohammed or Islam, I can be 99% certain I will receive a threat of violence, and that if I continue to be outspoken it will be acted upon (unless I go into hiding or receive 24/7 armed security), but I won't know which one of the 1.2 billion peaceful Muslims will go jihad and carry it out.
So, I am likely to just compromise a little and not say anything critical in the first place.
It is not necessary for every Muslim to attack every non-Muslim at once. All they need to do is bully everyone by having a few enforcers hanging around the edges, letting us know where the "red lines" are, and whenever anyone is foolish enough to cross them, making sure an example is made. In this way they can slowly impose sharia while also completing a demographic conquest.
