SYDNEY (Reuters) - Five Australian Muslim men convicted of plotting to commit violent jihad in Australia were jailed on Monday for terms ranging from 23 to 28 years.
One unanswered question: what measures are in place to prevent them from proselytizing to other prisoners?
The men were found guilty in October 2009 of conspiring to commit a terror attack between July 2004 and November 2005, by stockpiling weapons and chemicals to make bombs, in retaliation at Australia's involvement in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
During a 10-month trial, the prosecutor told the New South Wales state Supreme Court that the defendants obtained instructions on how to make bombs capable of causing large-scale death and destruction and literature which glorified the actions of al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.
The prosecution never told the court of any suspected target.
Judge Anthony Whealy said in sentencing the men that the group was motivated by "intolerant, inflexible religious conviction" and said the prospects of rehabilitation was poor.
The men, aged between 25 and 44 and who cannot be named by order of the judge, were arrested in Sydney in 2005 as part of Australia's largest ever terror raids...

At least in this case the word "religion" did not command immediate respect. What counted is what that ideology, that "religion," actually inculcated, and what those convicted took seriously. Only those Muslims who do not take seriously the texts and tenets of Islam might possibly be able to integrate into Western society, though the reasons for their not taking those texts to heart -- is it merely fear of endangering their positions in the West, and if that fear were removed, by an increase in Muslim numbers and therefore power, they would think, and behave, differently -- must be examined carefully. A civilisational bet should not be placed idly by those in charge of instructing and protecting us. And we have a perfect right, if we feel those in charge have not adequately informed themselves about Islam's texts and tenets, to second-guess, or overrule, them.

only Certain religious convictions might be characterized as intolerant (in a "Very Bad" way).
And being inflexible as a value judgement might also have some relation to the type of things you believe, and if they are correct being "inflexible" might not be all that bad [under no circumstances will I drink poisoned Kool-Aid, not even "just this once".]
Well, seems to me just a very soft way of saying that the SPECIFIC religion they espouse is intolerant in some way that actually is bad, and inflexible as meaning demanding strict adherence to its intolerant teachings.
Is this as close as a Government can get these days to saying "Your religion sucks."?
OK, yah, I know, the judge probably meant that these poor errant fools just misinterpreted a fine religion by themselves being intolerant and inflexible. The only problem is that the criminal interpretation has both logic and scholars behind it, so it becomes a strange requirement that "state-sanctioned" jihad requires denouncing core beliefs. "Yes, you can be a muslin, just don't do all of the things that your religion requires"?
Does not the religious conviction have something to do with the actual tenets of the religion itself? Can you just pick and choose to admire some OK parts while simply ignoring the odious? Is the Judge's statement hinting at some other standard where the blame is with the individual for errant religious conviction while the religion itself remains blameless?
Might not work perfect here but I sure prefer our Constitution to Kings' and Queens' law that permits anonymous incarceration ("legal reasons"?) and anti-free speech muzzling of elected representitives.
I'll give the Judge credit for extremely good judgement and note the solid jail terms.

In October last year, at the end of Australia's longest terrorism trial, a jury found them guilty of conspiring to commit a terrorist act or acts.
During the sentencing hearing at the Supreme Court in Parramatta today, Justice Anthony Whealy said *the men regarded their imprisonment as a badge of honour*. {Of course they do: they are just performing their jihad duty - dda}.
The judge referred to the chemicals, weapons and ammunition they stockpiled.
He said one of the men told a shop assistant he was buying hydrogen peroxide for his grandmother. {Wow - lame excuse # 1001 - dda}.
The judge said the men had material that glorified Osama Bin Laden and *graphic images of violence involving hostages* {tr: BEHEADINGS - see final paragraph of report, below - dda}.
"One particular feature of this trial was the fact that a considerable volume of extremist material was held by each offender in common with the other conspirators," he said.
He gave the men non-parole periods ranging from 17 to 21 years.

'Two of their supporters at the back of the public gallery shouted in Arabic, "Be patient, Allah is with you".
'Outside court, the lawyer for one of the men said he will appeal.

'The other four men arrested in 2005 pleaded guilty and have already been sentenced for their role in the conspiracy to commit a terrorist attack.

'The jury heard from 300 witnesses, examined 3,000 exhibits, watched 30 days of surveillance tapes and listened to 18 hours of phone intercepts; however, there was no direct evidence linking the accused to the terrorism plot.
'Weapons were found in the south-west Sydney home of the accused ringleader, along with enough ammunition to keep firing for 37 hours.
'Prosecutors said three of the accused had gone on paramilitary-style camps in far western New South Wales [hmm – where, exactly? - sounds to me as though farmers and other Aussies resident in the more remote parts of the country, need to be told to be on the lookout for suspicious activity by Men of Middle Eastern Appearance - dda} to prepare for an attack. The defence claimed the men were just hunting, camping and having fun. {suuure, suure - they were preparing to hunt Infidels - dda}.
'The jury was also told that one of the accused had attended a paramilitary training camp in Pakistan run by the terrorist organisation, Lashkar-e-Toiba, but a key FBI witness told the court he could not be sure it was the man.
'Over 16 months, the men used false names to acquire mobile phones and spoke in code, aware they were under surveillance.
'They were also equipped with night-vision cameras and had "large quantities of literature which supported indiscriminate killing, mass murder and martyrdom." {I wouldn't say, 'indiscriminate', exactly - I'd bet the primary intended targets were...ANY NON-MUSLIM AUSTRALIANS - dda}.

Why are they in Australia? Who allowed them to settle here?
Why have they not been named? Who protects them?

A lot of the Lebanese Muslims came to Ausralia as refugees from the Lebanese civil war of the '70s. You know, like a lot of the Somalis came to Australia as refugees of their civil war in Somalia...Get the picture?
I should point out that Lebanese Christians have been here since the 1930s, and done well for themselves. Over-represented in the top professions, one of them a state premier ( like a state governor in USA ) and so on. Much like the Lebanese of West Africa. Very interesting. This sort of thing is not reported in the UK and from what I can see in our town Asians dominate the drug trade here. I can confirm from personal experience that in everything for parking offenses to assaults on people and property the police are terrified of them. I observe that the 'Daily Telegraph' (not the UK paper, the Sydney one) alone among those reports that I have seen so far, *names the jihadis*, providing mug shots courtesy of channel 10 tabloid tv, and giving names to go with the mug shots.
Well done, O Daily Telegraph of Sydney, for providing those O-so-revealing Islamic names; and for focusing on the astonishing law-enforcement-related *expense* caused by jihad-minded Muslims, to the average non-Muslim inhabitant of those lands in which there are now large, seditious and aggressive Mohammedan colonies.

It is really sick when you read the comments here http://muslimvillage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=57232&st=30&start=30 that most of the 'brothers' and 'sisters' sympathize with them. I can only imagine the trouble the world will be in in 25 - 50 years. Islam is so dangerous.
Oh and dumbledoresarmy, the security industry here in Sydney is dominated by steroid abusing Lebanese muslims. Beats me why anyone would employ them. My dog is smarter.

En attendant, le Conseil sur les Relations Americano-Islamiques (Council on American Islamic Relations) et les autres groupes musulmans nous disent que pour comprendre le vrai et pacifique Islam, il nous faut lire le Qur’an.
C’est donc pourquoi dans les mois qui vont suivre, je vais le lire avec vous, et en discuter dans une série d’articles. En entier. Pas de « choix intentionnel » ou « hors contexte ». Dans son intégralité, du début à la fin. Certain parmi vous sont peut-être familiers avec la série de David plotz sur Slate, « bloguer la Bible » (« Blogging the Bible »). Cette série y sera similaire, mais au lieu de seulement écrire ce que pense ou ce que je ressens au sujet d’un certain passage, je me référerai, contrairement à Plotz, aux commentaires – tous de sources musulmanes – sur le Qur’an.

@anticom - Never fear. We're a long way gone, but the London villains are a long way from scared of Islamic scum. Like any other big city, London is divided up. The Islamofilth dominate in the east, which they can have because they're only preying on one another and paddling round the shallow end of the opium and arms trade. Where the money is, west, is under the Chinese and Bosnian thumb, with the Brits quietly skimming off cream. North is, was and ever shall be, Irish. Nobody messes with them coz they're the original terrotists who taught the Mahound Swine Gang all they knew before the latter linked up with Chinese politicos. Surgically detach Gitmo from Cuba, and tow same a "safe" distance into the Atlantic.
Detonate a really, really, clean, very small nuclear device on Gitmo.
Tow Gitmo back, and re-attach to Cuba.
Repeat as necessary.
