Man hit with Taser in Metro Airport security breach had no plane ticket

Romulus -- FBI officials have charged a 27-year-old Ohio man with violating airport security requirements after he allegedly ran past a security checkpoint at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, refused orders to stop and was shot with a Taser this morning.

FBI Special Agent Michael Thomas filed the criminal complaint today against Kaylan Policherla in U.S. District Court in Detroit. In the report Thomas said Policherla walked through the checkpoint and metal detector with his hands concealed in his jacket pockets. He didn't have a ticket or present identification.

"I am aware that Policherla was not responsive to the verbal commands given to him by airport police and that an airport officer had discharged his Taser at subject, which had no effect on subject," Thomas wrote.

Knowingly entering an aircraft or airport area in violation of security requirements is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Policherla ran past the security checkpoint at the McNamara Terminal about 7:45 a.m. and refused to stop when ordered by Transportation Security Administration officers, said Jim Fotenos, TSA spokesman. Authorities activated the breach alarm, causing metal gates to snap down, isolating the section around Concourse A.

"It worked really well. This guy had no place to go," said Michael Conway, airport spokesman.

The incident caused delays of almost an hour. Regular screening procedures resumed about 8:40 a.m.

The protocols and procedures appeared to have been executed properly, Fotenos said. Conway says the man's vehicle was located at the airport, searched and towed. Conway says people in the isolated area were evacuated.

People evacuated from the terminal were screened again.

Mark Hinojosa, director of interactive media for The Detroit News, said his flight from Chicago was held on the tarmac because the airport had been closed for nearly an hour, according to the pilot.

"Our pilot told the passengers that nothing was moving ... because there were security issues in the terminal," Hinojosa said. "He said he was trying to get the ground crew to let us in."
