"There Is No Compulsion In Religion, But There May Be A Beating Or Two" Alert: "Pakistani Christian Beaten for Refusing to Convert to Islam," from Compass Direct News, February 22:
KALLUR KOT, Pakistan, February 22 (CDN) -- The four older Muslim brothers of a 26-year-old Christian beat him unconscious here earlier this month because he refused their enticements to convert to Islam, the victim told Compass. Riaz Masih, whose Christian parents died when he was a boy, said his continual refusal to convert infuriated his siblings and the Muslim cleric who raised them, Moulvi Peer Akram-Ullah. On Feb. 8, he said, his brothers ransacked his house in this Punjab Province town 233 kilometers (145 miles) southwest of Islamabad. "They threatened that it was the breaking point now, and that I must convert right now or face death," Masih said. "They said killing an infidel is not a sin, instead it's righteousness in the sight of Allah almighty."Masih begged them to give him a few minutes to consider converting and then tried to escape, but they grabbed him and beat him with bamboo clubs, leaving him for dead, he said.
"They vented their fury and left me, thinking that I was dead, but God Almighty resuscitated me to impart His good news of life," he said.
Masih told Compass that his brothers and Akram-Ullah have been trying to coerce him to convert to Islam since his brothers converted.
"They had been coercing me to embrace Islam since the time of their recantation of Christianity," Masih said, "but for the last one month they began to escalate immense pressure on me to convert."
He grew up with no chance to attend church services because of his siblings' conversion to Islam, he said, adding that in any event there was no church where he grew up. He knew two Christian families, however, and he said his love for the Christian faith in which he was originally raised grew as he persistently refused to convert to Islam.
He said Akram-Ullah and his brothers offered him 1 million rupees (US$11,790), a spacious residence and a woman of his choice to marry in order to lure him to Islam, but he declined....

How can these continuing outrages emanating from the Islamic world possibly be blamed on "corrupt regimes", as the apologists are want to do?
Time and again, we see mostly passive complicity when it comes to Muslim governments and their reactions to the persecutions of non-Muslims in the Muslim realm. The real perpetrators behind these outrages are the local mullah, the local barber, the local handy-man, the local notary public, i.e., the Muslim "street", the PEOPLE THEMSELVES.
This is where the otherwise insightful Victor Davis Hanson is so very wrong...when he defines a totalitarian society by the policies of its government. There is another totalitarianism, one much more difficult to eradicate...one that resides in the religion, culture, and everyday lives of the people...one that requires no directive from above.

Pakistan is an abject failure and has been since Muhammad Ali Jinnah's drug-induced hypnotic fantasy of a Indian Muslim state in the 1930s. Jinnahism failed miserably where
Theodore Herzl (e.g, Zionism) succeeded way beyond expectations (another reason why Muslims are jealous of Jews). One would have thought that mass murder of 2 million Bengali Muslims (former East Pakistan) by Punjabi and Sindhi (West Pakistan) bloodthirsty fascists during Pakistani partition would have convinced any sane person that Pakistan in any form should be devolved and the territory returned posthaste to India.

Martin - Great job. Take care of yourself, there are too many Islamic thugs getting away with the crimes at all levels in the Euro Cities according to several close contacts.
What is very worrying here is the behaviour of the CONVERT brothers, the "hydrophobic dog" behaviour, which I had imagined to be characteristic of Muslims who had been born into families which were Muslim for generations, ie thoroughly in the fold. The brothers seem to have converted for pragmatic reasons, the way they wanted the young brother to convert. It is horrifying that Islam can work its special "magic" so fast on people who were born Christian. (I met one, an African convert to Islam and very fired-up. It seemed to me to be the status and favours granted to Muslim males which attracted him; in Islam he could be a "real man"; exploit women, throw his weight around etc.)
The poor brother, and bless him. I hope someone from Compass can help him come to the West, where he will find many Pakistani fellow Christians giving fresh vigour to Christianity here.

Christians in Muslim countries, and ex-Muslim Christians, can be so strong in their faith. All while comfortably-off Westerners holiday in Muslim countries, giving money to the Muslims who persecute the local Christians.

They offer him the equivalent of over $11,000, a huge amount of money in Pakistan. They offer him a beautiful place to live, and the woman of his choice. All if he will convert to Islam. Then when he refuses, they try to kill him.
It's all about physical inducements, carrots and sticks. For Islam, human beings are often conceived as animals to be moved around by pleasure and pain, not creatures of conscience, not souls in whom there is a still, small voice of truth speaking always anew, always new truth, living truth, if they will listen.
It's as if your math teacher were to show you a math problem, and then, instead of showing the thought processes leading to the answer, he offered you money, girls, whatever, if you would agree with an answer he has written on the board. As if he demanded that you join the army of those who will fight to establish that as the answer accepted in classrooms around the world. Then if you said "no, I don't see how 2 + 2 = 1.7," the math teacher tried to kill you. Such a "teacher" would of course not really be a math teacher, even if some of his answers happened to be right. In the same way, Islam, in most respects, is not religion. Religion at its core is about living experience and discovery of the sacred. It's not fundamentally about any form of compulsion, any more than math is about compulsion. But Islam is all about compulsion.
In Sahih Bukhari, the most canonical of hadith collections, Muhammad said, "Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him."
I too, Cornelius, admire Victor Davis Hanson. He's a very smart and knowledgeable guy, particularly respecting ancient warfare, his specialty. But he doesn't get Islam as well as the point you made about totalitarianism being capable of residing in the hearts of a people and not just existing in a government (well, if he did "get" Islam, then everything else would follow as a matter of course, now wouldn't it?).
Several years ago I actually had a give and take e-mail session with an assistant of his. My initial communication had as its main purpose conveying that Islam, all of Islam, was fundamentally flawed and that true democracy and Islam were at odds with one another. I wrote this in response to a column Hanson had written (for National Review) about how something very possibly could give (yes, it was this vague) in Iraq which would turn that country into a real democracy. I argued that if this were to happen it would be in spite of Islam and not in any way because of it. Well, his assistant disagreed with me and we went back and forth a few times until we came to a dead end, one that had as its cause, as I saw it, the inability to comprehend that Islam is rotten to the core. And if someone as sharp as Hanson as represented by his assistant couldn't comprehend this (I had the distinct impression she was speaking for him and not just herself), well, then your prognosis rather than mine respecting the eventual demise of Islam looks all the better for it. I'm sure you'll understand, as I've written one or two times before, that I hope you're wrong and I'm correct but something like this experience makes me think you may very well have the better grasp of it all.
Still clinging to that optimism that I have about how things will finally turn out, but it is tested on a regular basis, this narration I just provided being a case in point. As always, hope you and yours are well.

Wow amazing track record for the religion of peace for murders and killings of Non Muslims. Sikhs, Hindus, Jain, Buddhists, Christians, Jews... all being killed by the blood thirsty Mohammedans. So when was the last time that Sikhs, Hindus, Jain, Buddhists, Christians, Jews... were killing each other off at the rate that Mohammedans go about killing Non Muslims?

Muslim converts to other religions, even in Western lands, face threats from family and their communities.
On a personal note, while living in Texas, I did meet a Palestinian Arab woman who married an American man and converted to his religion. Her family actually got together and had a vote whether to have her killed or not; but one uncle argued with great conviction not to have her killed, but simply ostracized, so she was not harmed further.
In Yemen it was the practice of most Jewish families to marry their children off at BIRTH in order to protect them should they be orphaned before puberty. Islamic law in that country mandated that any Jewish child be given to a Muslim family should the child's father die before puberty.
There are tens of thousands of Yemeni Muslims who are of recent Jewish descent.
I also imagine that this might be why Egypt's Christians usually tatoo a cross onto an infant's wrist at birth.

Egyptian Liberal: Hostility Towards Minorities Will Lead to Internal War
In light of the recent increase in hostile incidents and attacks on the Copts in Egypt, Nabil Sharaf Al-Din, an Egyptian liberal representing the online journal Elaph, wrote in the Egyptian independent oppositionist paper Al-Masri Al-Yawm[1] warning that enmity towards minorities, which he says dates back to the expulsion of the Jews from Egypt and has recently been directed against the Copts, is bound to culminate in serious intra-Muslim conflict.
Following are excerpts from the article:
"Today is Saturday, And We're Striking the Jews; Tomorrow, Sunday, We'll Strike the Christians"
"'They dominate the economy; they are a fifth column; they are Israel's agents.' These are examples of accusations rampant several decades ago against Egyptian Jews, whose presence in this country dates back to the time of the Prophet Moses…
"Today, many [Egyptians] are making the same accusations, albeit against the Christians. [The Christians] are not called Israel's agents; instead they are accused of sympathizing with the Americans, and their economic success has come to be viewed as dishonor - as if their money was acquired through larceny.
"Those expert in [making up] excuses and obfuscating problems are expected to object to these opinions, contending that there is a big difference between the two cases, [that is,] between the Jews and the Copts. [However,] I see no difference between them. Even from the standpoint of Muslim law, they both [i.e. the Jews and the Christians, are considered] 'the people of the Book.' The laws that apply to the Jews also apply to the Christians - not to mention [the fact] that in Egypt, Judaism preceded Christianity by hundreds of years…

Nevertheless, he and his wife have continued speaking the Egyptian vernacular at home, have taught it to their children, and have on several occasions taken them to visit Egypt."
"Can Such A Woeful Fate [As Expulsion] Await Our Coptic Brothers [As Well?]"
"Can such a woeful fate await our Coptic brothers [as well]? The answer is that [such a scenario] is not so farfetched - especially when one considers [the following:] the cancerous spread of Salafi ideology in Egyptian society; the country's surrender to blackmail by Islamists; the proliferation of hypocrisy - for instance, a mark on the forehead [taken as a sign of assiduousness in prayer] or a woman wearing the isdal, which is essentially the Iranian chador; incendiary speeches by some mosque preachers and propagandists on satellite television who try to outdo each other in presenting the Christian faith as an abomination and in disparaging the New Testament as a forgery.
"In addition, morality has sunk so low that a certain individual, whose articles appear weekly in [the Egyptian government daily] Al-Ahram, [2] has called [the New Testament] 'the Book of Moneybags' [3] - thus, the Christians are being abused on account of their wealth. To the best of my knowledge, Al-Ahram is funded by the Egyptian taxpayer."
"Citizenship [Laws] Must Be Implemented By Abolishing The Clause in the Constitution That Sets Islam as [Egypt's] National Religion - Because the State is an Entity Devoid Of Religion"
"It began in 1952, with the July 23 revolution, which was supported by the Muslim Brotherhood and resulted in the emigration of millions of Copts - the best of minds - to every corner of the world, where they invariably succeeded [in establishing themselves]. Since then, the stream of Coptic emigration has gained momentum.
"Today, I find it necessary to warn of the danger [to Egypt's economy] posed by the removal of their capital from the country. The present extremist climate cannot be changed through inactivity or by coaxing. [Rather,] citizenship [laws] must be implemented by abolishing the clause in the constitution that sets Islam as [Egypt's] national religion - because the state is an entity devoid of religion. The clause on religion should likewise be eliminated from all official documents.
"In addition, social Islamization activity, currently underway in full force, must be curtailed. For example, who needs fatwas prohibiting smoking? Isn't it enough to say that smoking is harmful to one's health? Why say that financial transactions, e.g. mortgages, are based on the shari'a? Aren't all these exaggerations that are bound to lead us to an unfathomable disaster?
"And why do government press and state television channels give such ample ground to demagogues and hatemongers? Why are we getting ourselves in trouble by lending support to dangerous phenomena, including Salafi and Wahhabi propagandists, even after they have been expelled by their own countries? Isn't that tantamount to preparing the ground for extremists, who in time will take up arms against us?"
The Day Is Near When the Muslims Will "Devour One Another"
"It must be stated that a society that does not allow pluralism or debate is a society in crisis. [ Egyptian society] has repudiated its Jewish population and is now discriminating against Christians; next will come a new phase in which Muslims devour one another. [They will say:] This one is a Sufi, who makes pilgrimages to tombs; that one is a Rafidi Shi'ite; and those over there are secular apostates.
"And so on, and so forth, until we turn into the wicked of this world - if this has not actually happened to us already."
