Actually as a proud Italo American gal, I HATE the title of this book. Once again my people are slimed. Mafia is an Italian word. Southern Italy was invaded and occupied by these Muslim scum who still thrill to cry: "Islam will conquer Rome."

Chris Gaubatz puts me in mind of John Roy Carlson, who infiltrated pro-Nazi groups in this country, including people who supported Fritz Kuhn's Bund and William Pelley's Silver Shirts, and wrote it all up in "Under Cover," a book that went through two dozen editions in the middle of World War II, and electrified the country. If you can get a copy -- and they are all over the place -- get it and read it.

Chris Gaubatz was doing work without any government assistance, doing what the government itself, the FBI, ought to have doing. What has led to this state of affairs? Now the government is studying the material that Chris Gaubatz, at risk to his life, managed to acquire. He should be honored, given the recognition that he deserves. And our representatives should be asked, and the members of the Executive branch too, just why we have to depend on free-lancers, taking their own risks, to discover what the FBI and the police should be doing? While I doubt to ever gain the clarity on these issues as you have, the last portion of your comment says it all. Perhaps what explains this intolerable situation could be just political correctness to the extreme. Perhaps mark me as paranoid, but I believe the cause for this intolerance is much deeper. Not being a conspiracy nut so to speak, but there must be a hidden agenda, within the government, that causes this obvious aloofness by or government, to ignore the threat that any sane individual can witness.
If it ever ends, something drastic, something not known will perhaps end this situation. In my mind such an event would be nothing short of war, or national conflict, brought on by ordinary people, feeling threatened and not supported, by a government that begins to harm our freedoms, no longer able to hide their activities from public view.

This has absolutely nothing to do with slamming Italians and everything to do with a book title that will resonate with people. When I first read about it I thought, man, that brings up a visual that is very powerful and something the average Joe will get. I never connected this for a moment to Italians, Italy, the Pope, my sister-in-law's uber fabulous spaghetti sauce recipe that I've been making for about forty years now or anything else that has to do with that wonderful culture. The Mafia sucks and the Muslim Mafia sucks. The wording was perfect.

The word "Mafia" is now used generically, as in "the Irish Mafia," "the Jewish Mafia," "the Kennedy Mafia," in the same way that Kleenex and Xerox have been used, or the word "Diaspora" (as in "the black Diaspora"). The alliteration -- Muslim Mafia -- was also too tempting not to exploit.
Had the book been titled "Nihad's 'Ndrangheta" or "The CAIR Camorra" that would be another story.

While the Italian mafias may have been the original ones in days gone by, from the mid-90s onwards the Russian mafias have become the most-notorious, especially in Eastern Europe, South of France, England and I believe areas of the US. So maybe it's the Russians who should be offended?

Germans don't freak out when someone refers to this or that extremist group as Nazis. Why should an Italian be so hypersensitive about the use of the word Mafia? Talk about Nazis today no more tars Germans than talk about the Mafia tars Italians. Italians have nothing to be insecure about. They have a brilliant and proud history. But our new friend here is like the princess who feels the pea under ten mattresses, and insists that everyone cater to her ridiculous sensitivities. She's dooming herself to a destiny of hissy fits, from which she may never escape, because she's taken in by her own glib ideological patter delivered in a tone of arrogant self-righteousness. Perhaps she's insecure about her Italian background, and projects her own doubts onto us, and then attacks us. Well, look in the mirror, stop looking at us. Maybe you need to study Michelangelo and Leonardo, and Galileo, and Dante, and the architect who designed the cathedral in Florence, and a host of other notable Italians, if that will ease your obnoxiously prickly insecurity.
But I suppose Gaubatz could have called the book The Muslim Mob. That would have kept the alliteration.
