The girl, just 12 years old, had worked as a maid in the home of Naeem in the last six months.
The Center for Legal Aid Assistance and Settlement (CLAAS) denounces that access to the courtroom where the court hearings were held against the accused was denied, because a group of Muslim lawyers (pictured) 'prevented' entry. The association is fighting - for free - for the rights of the poorest and marginalized groups has been threatened by thousands of lawyers - friends of the murderer - that promise to burn alive anyone who wants to represent the victim in court. Joseph Francis, director of Claas, asked members of civil society, political and religious leaders to rise up and take steps to "condemn this new form of terrorism" by lawyers who "should ensure justice." The Pakistani newspaper The News reported that on Feb. 4, the police conducted the accused to the courts amid "tight security. And, as usual, officials prevented journalists and relatives of victims to come into the hall for "security reasons".
Shazia Bashir's family could not access the court not once but three times, a strange fact, regarding the judiciary in Pakistan. Police officials explain that it would "not be possible" to prevent clashes and violence, where "Shazia's relatives and representatives of minorities to enter the courtroom."...
How they have the audacity to call themselves a religion of peace is beyond me, unless it's a Monty Pythonesque sort of joke which we know it isn't.

I just just searched for poor Shazia Bashir's name on the BBC, Times, Telegraph, Guardian, and Mail - not a murmur. Our "fearless" (translation = gutless) media normally won't touch stories like this.

Take a look at the report on this case by Sabrina Tavernise in today's New York Times. It starts on the front page. It continues inside, at great length. Why, Sabrina Tavernise and her editors at the Times thought this story deserved attention. But what they thought did not deserve attention was any mention of the fact that the 12-year-old household slave, who had been mistreated, and sexually "abused" (what a euphemism) and raped, and then killed, by her master, was a Christian girl, and that the treatment meted out to her, by her Muslim enslaver and murderer, was done so with a feeling of impunity, justified because he is a Muslim and she was only a Christian, and a girl, thus at the completely dispensable level of Pakistani society.
Read that story backwards and forwards. Try to find the word "Christian" in it. Try to find the word "Islam" in it.
You won't.
Tne New York Times has now gone beyond anything it has done before -- or frailed to do -- in this line. It deserves an award, an anti-Pulitzer Prize. It should be held up, and this piece in particular held up, for study and discussion in courses on journalism, and non-fiction writing, all over this great land, in these great times, in the last days of mankind.

Not being a lawyer, I may be missing something here, but I don't see how a dead victim needs defending in court. Do the deceased need legal representation?
Maybe what's meant here is that only one side of this sordid tale will be told in court -- that of the wealthy accused lawyer(and we know how truthful that will be) -- and anyone who dares present the other side, the tale of the young and poor servant girl who ended up dead, will find themselves in danger of being burned alive -- by the lawyers' association.

Last time the New York Times sent a reporter to Pakistan determined to uncover the truth about the enemy we face, the time early 2002, the reporter was named Daniel Pearl, and he was beheaded. In fact, a fellow known as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed claims to have personally beheaded him. I cannot recall what Khalid's religious affiliation was, or what became of Khalid, however. That was a long time ago.
So, what did the New York Times learn from this experience? Pull your punches, do not offend the enemy, do not even identify the enemy, or your organization and its employees will be targeted? Write another chapter in "Profiles in Courage."

Does "the Lahore Bar Association" sound familiar to anyone here? It should. It was the Lahore Bar Association and Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry who challenged Pervez Musharraf's rule in Pakistan in 2007.
Musharraf removed Chaudhry, and in essence imposed martial law.
The resultant "Pakistani Lawyers' Movement" eventually ousted Musharraf. Chaudry was reinstated by Musharraf's successor, Asif Ali Zardari.
Personally, I *never* had a clear sense of what was really going on there. The Western media framed this entirely in terms of dictatorship versus the "rule of law". The NYT even ran an article on the subject in mid-2008 titled—I kid you not—"The Lawyers' Crusade".
I was—God knows—*no fan of Pervez Musharraf*. But I was always rather concerned, through odd bits and pieces that came through in Western articles, that the "rule of law" that the "Pakistani Lawyers' Movement" was interested in was *stricter Shari'ah*.
The horrifying story above certainly does nothing to calm these concerns. Does anyone here—more knowledgeable than I am—have any definitive information on this?

Jim Foster@Interesting. I didn't know about the Muslim aversion to salamanders. However, it isn't unique. Where I live in northern British Columbia, the indigenous people, the Carrier Indians, have a strong dislike for and fear of salamanders that persists even though most of them are now Roman Catholic. When encountered, salamanders are to be killed in ritual fashion. I have never found any explanation for this attitude toward salamanders, and the ones found here are not poisonous or otherwise dangerous. (Some species of salamander are poisonous.)

What is the court proceeding for? Isn't it the job of the public prosecutor (a lawyer?) to seek justice? Has the alleged murderer been charged or is the proceeding merely a formality? If killing this Christian girl is not a crime then what is ANYONE doing in court? If murder, even of a non-Muslim, is still considered a crime in Pakistan then it would seem the victim has her spokesperson: the prosecutor. Are the lawyers threatening to murder the prosecutor and the judge?

A favourite ploy of leftist media outlets is reporting sans salient facts. They can then say, "We DID report on that story."
In the large city where I live, a man was forcing his way into homes and robbing the homeowners. The news covered it endlessly. Be on the lookout for a man with a goatee beard and sweatshirt.
Everyone knew the man was a minority by the way the story NEVER described his race. He could shave the beard and drop the hoodie, but he was still black. Yet the maintained "we warned the public with constant coverage."

Didn't the lawyer offer blood money to the family? There's the rub. The quran (5:45) tells victims to forgo punishment in exchange for diyya (blood money). It's supposed to be a choice for the victim's family to make, but since they are mere Christians, muslims are demanding that it is forcibly applied.

Apparently, Pakistan has NO sort of a code of ethics that its "lawyers" are required to adhere to. As an attorney in Maryland, I'm confident that such a threat on the part of any member of the Bar here would merit that attorney a suspension at the very least, and, more likely, disbarment. I have no doubt that the same holds true for every other State.
However, such brazeness and blantant actions on the part of this so-called "lawyer," come as no surprise. He obviously felt quite confident that no matter what heinous and barbaric actions he perpetrated against that innocent Christian child, it would not result in any sort of legal sanctions against him by the Lahore Bar Association, or any sort of condemnation by his fellow members of the Bar. Rather, he is no doubt getting the support and backing that he counted on. Of course, the aformentioned scenario begs the question of WHY he could feel so confident that he could rape and murder this child without any repurcussions? Well, my fellow infidels know the answer to that one all too well...
All we are witnessing now is merely a token response by Pakistan to the outrage expressed by those who are aware of the savage, cruel, and inhumane savagry committed against this child, and the pressure they have brought to bear. But for this, we can rest assured the accused would in all likelihood never even had charges pressed against him, much less be arrested. What we are also privy to witnessing, thanks to Jihad Watch and other sites brave enough to expose the rampant discrimination practiced against non-Muslims in predominently Muslim countries, is the typical, mindless, and arrogant response by far too many Muslims, some of whom are sworn to uphold and seek "justice," and have the audacity to refer to themselves as "lawyers." Given this sickening scenario, Pakistan might just as well dispense with their "lawyers" and "judicial system," and revert to the tribal "justice" they all too often resort to employing, particularly in instances in which non-Muslims find themselves involved. A poster above gives a link to a news item about the murder of an Italian priest in Trebizond, or Trabzon (which city held out against the Muslims even after Constantinople fell), Father Santoro. But that murder took place in 2006. It is easy to overlook dates, and useful to check them just before posting.
I agree, the headline seems to be misleading. The central issue would appear to be, not the the defense of the dead girl, but the defense of the murderer. What the threat appears to be is against any prosecutor who would take on the case, and during the trial, if there is one, introduce evidence about the girl's religion that would be awkward.

This is my first posting, so let me introduce myself. I have been challenging Arabs/Muslims here in Seattle for 38 years. In November I confronted the head of the ME Dept at Columbia, my alma mater, at an alumni meeting. Asked him why he had made no reference to the Islamic war of conquest, or the Sharia law that any land under Islam cannot revert to anyone else. When he denied these concepts I emailed my contact in Israel, a commentator named Yoram Ettinger, for advice on Islamic law. He referred me to you. I am ordering my copy of Infidel's Guide to the Koran.
Would like your advice on a project I have in mind, and perhaps some help from your other bloggers. While visiting New York this summer my wife and I toured the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was disturbed by a sign on the archway between two halls. It acknowledged the great "debt" European art owes to Muslim art.
Now, I am not an art expert, but I can see that European art has always focused on portraying the human form, originally biblical themes, while Muslim art forbids this protrayal, and relies on intricate abstract designs instead.
I have started asking people in the art field if there is any validity to this "debt," and they are as puzzled as I am. This seems to be a good project to focus attention on the problems you are working to bring to the attention of America.
The issue is very simple. The area of conflict is smaller than a two-foot square, and is clearly visible in a public place. The location is at the epicenter of the artistic, educated American community, NYT territory. It is a perfect example of the degradation of Western accomplishments by the Muslims. What we would be asking for is also simple. Have the Artistic Director produce a scholarly, peer-reviewed explanation of this "debt," or, failing that, take down the #@!?*&% sign!
