I's getting just a bit harder, is it not, for the whole business of the "Palestinian people" -- a "tiny people" only struggling for its "homeland" -- to continue to be accepted by intelligent people in the West. The campaign to create, out of the local Arabs, the soi-disant "Palestinian people," started, remember, only after the Six-Day War, when the defeat suffered by the Arabs led them to conclude that military means would not suffice, and should not again be attempted until, through a sustained campaign of propaganda to undermine Israel, it was forced to give up the territory it had won in a war of self-defense, and even give up that territory which had been allotted, by the League of Nations' Mandates Commission, to the Mandate for Palestine for the sole purpose of the creation of the Jewish National Home. For many years that propaganda campaign, funded by vast amounts of Arab oil revenues, and by a combination of old-fashioned antisemites and up-to-date leftists sympathizing with the "Palestinians" because they were so...well, so anti-American, so Third World, and therefore no matter how fascistic in actual beliefs and practices, to be favored over those far-too-Western and far-too-educated and far-too-advanced Israelis, who also made the terrible error of belonging, organically, to the West, now joined by armies of Western hirelings who did the Arab, and especially Saudi, bidding (and are doing it still-- see the review of Esposito's latest book by one Joseph Preeville, a self-identified "writer" who lives in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which he finds just swell in every respect, and admires Islam, and wishes to defend it, as much as John Esposito himself, if such were possible).

But now as we in the West begin to grasp the nature of the ideology of Islam, and as many in the West begin to recognize how they, too, in Great Britain and France and Germany and Italy and everywhere, are threatened by aggressive Muslim demands and by the immutable texts that inculcate the idea of the duty of Jihad, the struggle to remove all obstacles to the spread, and then the dominance, of Islam, we begin to grasp what Israel faces.

Indeed, we being to grasp, many of us, the problem Israel faces better than many in Israel do -- for them, it is just too painful, apparently, to recognize that there is no end, no "solution" to the Jihad being waged on them. But they must come to recognize it, and must explain this to the world, at first privately in meetings with others in the threatened West, and then at last, in various clever ways -- first a little, thence to more -- publicly. To recognize and speak openly about the problem does no harm, but allows for a salutary realism in refusing the false "solutions" of further Israeli concessions, which will do nothing to change or end the duty of Jihad, and will merely make it far more difficult for Arab leaders to resist the call to join in open war-making against Israel given what would then appear to be, and would be, its obvious much increased vulnerability. For the sake of peace, Israel has not only to refuse to give up a single inch or dunam of land more, but to explain to itself that this does not spell disaster, but represents reality breaking in. And the rest of the West should heed this, and think clearly about its own problems -- especially in Europe -- with all the instruments of Jihad now unsheathed against it.

Also agree with Patrick above that Jesus was possessed of an infinitely superior character compared to that of Mohammed. Whatever one's religious beliefs or lack thereof, no sensible and knowledgeable human being can look upon Jesus and Mohammed without being convinced of the vast superiority of the former over the latter. Would that all Muslims would wake up tomorrow devout Christians. The world would be instantly in far better shape were this to happen.

We really can't condemn any Muslim for preaching or calling for people to follow their religion, the problem is Islam and the Koran. We should not be surprised or shocked when Muslims follow the Koran, instead we should just take what the Koran calls for as the reason that it cannot be allowed, Islam that is, in the West. This fantasy the West is currently on that Muslims can be allowed to spread in the West but that none of them will actually follow Islam is destined to nothing but failure and misery. The tolerant position is that this man is merely following his religion, that is his duty as a Muslim. They must just be kept separate from the West or from any other country that wants to live in peace.

It is a shame that so many people, who were intended to be made into God's image, are so totally Hell bent.

China, Japan still fighting over history

There are remarkable similarities between the Japanese "Hakko-Ichiu" (which justified "Holy War" waged to bring the world to submission) waged by Japan from 1931 to 1945 in Asia (which was put them on a collision course with the US) and Islam's jihad. (And both "holy wars" may come to a similar end.)

To understand the history of WW2 in Asia, it is essential to understand the "religious" motives that justified the Japanese behavior in China. The Chinese are still bitter about what Japan's "Holy War" brought them in terms of mass murder (including mass be-headings, mass rapes etc.).

(We do not think of General MacArthur as a "religious reformer"-but he was that in the occupation (1945-1953) of Japan, as he worked through the Emperor to end the "religious" rationalizations that provided the "reasons" for Japan's "holy war" of conquest, mass-murder, and exploitation in Asia.)

One day future Muslims may be as ashamed of their "holy war" against "unbelievers" as modern Japan is for "Hakko-Ichiu." But many of Islam's victims and their families may never forgive them. Today Japan may be America's Banzai Buddy, but it probably will take several centuries for the Chinese to forgive what the Japanese did in China (as with Jewish people and the Holocaust perpetuated by the Germans.)

Islam may one day join the Nazis and the Japanese "Hakko-Ichiu" as unforgivable belief-systems after jihad has become a distant memory.
