Actually, the Gharqad tree is not in the Qur'an, but the Hadith.

Her final statement was "As a Jew in the United States I have more to fear from people like Mike Huckabee than Muslim Jihadists". I asked "well, you didn't work at the World Trade Center, did you?" Can someone explain to me the prevalence of this attitude among a substantial number of Jews in the US and Europe? How can this be, considering the consistant anti-Jewish rhetoric from the Islamic world. I don't get it.
The problem, of course, isn't that he's Jewish but rather that he's liberal. And most Jewish-Americans are liberal because traditionally much of the establishment excluded them in one way or another. But what's happened is that the establishment pretty much grew out of this kind of prejudice but liberalism just kept getting more and more radical and deserted its traditional mainstream liberal thinking. Most Jews have not yet come to realize this, though a greater proportion of young Jews have. Harry Truman type liberalism is pretty much dead and has been replaced with 1960s type liberalism which is a very different thing and the majority of Jews have not moved with the times. Put another way, the modern Jewish liberal is both an anachronism and his own worst enemy.

Re: the gharqad tree: The link below offers one explanation as to why this particular species of boxthorn is considered "the tree of the Jews" by Muslims. One other explanation, which I remember reading and which sounded eminently plausible to me, was that the gharqad tree is deemed to do a poor job of hiding and protecting anyone because of its shape and growth patterns, hence any Jew under attack who tries to use the gharqad for concealment would be doomed. Thus, there is irony in this genocidal hadith already cited, with the insinuation that the Jews, at the end of days, will be bereft of any protection whatsoever. Alas, I cannot remember or find the source of this interpretation, so no link can be provided.

I looked up the two candidates for Gharkad tree - the boxthorn and the other thing, Natraria retusa (which can in fact grow to 2.5 metres if not eaten by goats).
The Horrible Hadith probably does intend that all the Muslims in earshot should laugh gloatingly at the ridiculous idea of Jews trying to hide behind the inadequate Gharkad.
But that's only because they're unable to envisage anything other than a goat-ravaged landscape.
Either of the two candidates for the role of Gharkad looks as though - if NOT munched by goats or camels - it could grow into quite a respectable tangly thorny shrub, and more than one, planted close together, could make a nice thick prickly hedge more than a metre tall. Any experienced commando can tell you that that's a whole lot better than nothing, for anyone wanting to hide.

Wellington/Ted- I think you are both correct. One of the most insidious aspects of modern liberalism is the all consuming guilt it contains concerning past and present evils of the west. To so many liberal thinkers all of the endless cultural, ideological and scientific gifts western civilization has given to the world are totally negated by the faults of that culture. Therefore, any movement which opposes the west, and western ideals, must have some validity, and even moral superiority. Thus, no matter the evidence of the outrages committed by those ant-western movements, Islam foremost amongst them,western liberals will continue to "understand" and even sympathize with those movements, considering the historical "context" (always the context of western outrages against them)which drove them to their actions. Any other evidence presented to western leftists will, I am afraid, be dismissed as racist propaganda, misunderstanding of their cultures, and intellectual imperialism. We can always hope however, and continue to fight the good fight.

I just invested in a copy of the Sahih al Bukhari and I am finding it quite "entertaining" in every sense of the word. Hadith about people collecting Muhammed's hair; others stating that Muhammed proclaimed no one would be able to understand Allah until he or she loved Muhammed more than his own father, mother, or child. Mo was quite a megalomaniac.

Many are still - even unto the third and fourth generation - reeling from the effects of the Nazi Holocaust.
