Spencer: "The Geert Wilders trial ought to be an international media event"

Here is my entry in a National Review symposium today, "Western Civilization on Trial":

The Geert Wilders trial ought to be an international media event; seldom has any court case anywhere had such enormous implications for the future of the free world. The case against him, which has all the legitimacy of a Stalinist-era Moscow show trial, is a manifestation of the global assault on free speech sponsored chiefly at the U.N. by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). If Wilders loses, the freedom of speech will be threatened everywhere in the West.

Even if he wins, a dangerous precedent has been set by the fact of the trial itself: It is a sad day for the freedom of speech when a man can be put on trial for causing another man offense. If offending someone were really a crime warranting prosecution by the civil authorities, the legal system would be opened up to absurdities even greater than the Wilders trial.

But of course what Dutch authorities, Muslim groups in the Netherlands, and the OIC really want to accomplish is to silence Wilders's truth-telling about jihad and Islamic supremacism. The court's railroading of Wilders was clear from that fact that 15 of his 18 requested witnesses were disallowed, including Mohammed Bouyeri, the Koran-inspired murderer of Theo Van Gogh who would have proven Wilders's point immediately. As Wilders himself put it Wednesday: "This court is not interested in the truth. This court doesn't want me to have a fair trial." The darkness descending over Europe, as indicated by this trial, may ensure that there is no fair trial there again for a long, long time.

Other symposium participants include Bat Ye'or, Paul Marshall, Clifford D. May, Daniel Pipes, and Nina Shea. Read it all.

Anything that is put 'legally' above criticism ALWAYS creates Tyranny.

The Kangaroe (Dutch spelling of the word) Court in the Netherlands currently attempting to crush freedom of thought and speech and criticism of an ideology ~like expansionistic, terroristic Islamic Imperialism (as demanded by the Koran)~ is a stain on the history of Holland and an insult to the intelligence of all free men and women on Earth.

The Dutch people should be laughing this process out of their system and thanking Wilders for standing up for what they used to honor in the Low Countries: Freedom.

Until they do, they are complicit in this suicidal madness, and abet the undermining of their nation by insidiously infiltrating Islamofascism.

This is a hopeless prosecution/persecution of Wilders.

If Wilders is convicted of defaming the Koran, he wins, as the Koran itself is evidence that the conviction is wrong.

If Wilders is declared innocent or the prosecution charged for bringing a malicious and hopeless charge, Wilders claim that the Koran is akin, nay worse then Mein Kamph, stands.

From the beginning, from the very moment that a decision was made to bring Wilders to court, the government/prosecution had already lost. Round 1 to Wilders by a large majority.

The court's decision to remove 15 expert witnesses, the court and prosecution lost -shot themselves in the foot, so to speak. Standing count to court/prosecution/government - Round 2 to Wilders

If Wilders is convicted, as I've stated, he actually wins. But NOW he can appeal the conviction on several grounds, one being that his expert witnesses were disallowed. More trouble for the government, as this drags the trial and adverse publicity to even greater heights. It also makes PVV more popular. There is no end to this.

I sometimes get the suspicion that the Dutch government is doing this deliberately, for they must know by now, that the future of the Netherlands is bleak.

Its win, win , win all the way for Wilders, even if he is convicted. In fact, the more times he is convicted the greater and more politically powerful he becomes.

I'm sure there is consternation in government at the way this trial is likely to proceed, if that is, they already knew beforehand, and planned it that way.

What is most certain is that the Islamic umma in the Netherlands, as well Europe, must be deeply concerned about this trial. They know, and are sensitive to such shifts of the wind, what this actually portends. It wouldn't surprise me in the least, that they are beseeching the government to stop the trial on some grounds - any grounds, for the continuation of this trial is a threat to Islam and the umma in Europe. If the government hasn't planned this all along, and actually is more concerned about the welfare of the umma then the Netherlands, then it is in a deep fix. If they abort, and the news comes out that it was done because of applications from the umma, then they are both sunk. If they don't, they are sunk anyway.

PRAY for Geert Wilders! Geert is a hero!

I think this is going to rebound on the Dutch gov big time.
The talk is about how this will harm Wilders' party's campaign efforts.
How? It should BE the campaign!!!
How can this blatant persecution of an elected politician help anyone but Wilders' faction?
Are they not already poised to have major influence after the election? I would think that this travesty would simply produce a total landslide.

Bat Ye’or, from the National Review article:

Geert Wilders is a hero for those countless Europeans who cherish a free and democratic Europe — a Europe proud of its Judeo-Christian and humanistic values, its civilization, and its achievements in the field of human rights....those who protest the Eurabization of culture and society are threatened, boycotted by their colleagues, thrown out of their jobs, forced to leave their families and go into hiding, or obliged to live with bodyguards. Wilders has devoted his life to freeing Europe from Eurabia’s clutches. To this titanic struggle he has sacrificed the security of his life and the joys of family. Threatened by a desert whirlwind blowing hatred upon Europe from the south, spending days and nights shielded by bodyguards, persecuted and tormented by his feckless Eurabian opponents, Geert Wilders incarnates the free soul of an unbending Europe.
....................

Here, here!

Another point, which serves to illustrate the Kafkaesque nature of these proceedings, is that it is not any of those who are affected by Wilders' supposed "hate speech" who are living under police protection, but rather people like Wilders himself—and others who have had the temerity to criticize Islam, such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Denmark's Kurt Westergaard.

Nor has the Wilders' trial been the first proceeding against critics of Islam in the Netherlands—Ayaan Hirsi Ali essentially lost her Parliament seat—and was was threatened with loss of Dutch citizenship—over the issue, and cartoonist Gregorius Nekshot had his home searched and actually served time in jail over his critique of Islam.

more, from above:

If Wilders loses, the freedom of speech will be threatened everywhere in the West.

Even if he wins, a dangerous precedent has been set by the fact of the trial itself: It is a sad day for the freedom of speech when a man can be put on trial for causing another man offense.
....................

Very true. The real purpose of such trials is to smother freedom of speech. Like the trial of Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant in Canada, they hope that anyone in future who considers criticizing Islam remembers these trials, and will be forced to consider whether they have the time, means and moral stamina, if such charges are brought against them, as well.

In addition, there is the social stigma—for most decent Westerners, being charged with—or even suspected of—racism, hate, and "Islamophobia" is simply intolerable.

Of course, that is what the prosecutors of such cases are counting on.

My guess is that Wilders will "get off" on some technicality that will not address the real issue of freedom of speech, or the charges will be dropped on some equally pointless technicality.

Still, it is imperative that Wilders fight these charges-as he is doing. While I do think Wilders' will "beat the charges" now, that is only at this stage of the game—for if Islam is allowed to make inroads unchecked, we will find brave men like Wilders imprisoned and worse in its name.

Our favorite Atheist has a word about the trail too. Don't forget to check it out.

Let's hope that Robert is wrong on this one. It is possible that the judge disallowed 15 defense witnesses because he wants to shorten the trial - that he does not really believe that the case against Wilders has any merit, and he wants to get it over with as soon as possible.

We'll see.

I actually heard a Dutch government spokesman on a radio broadcast say "freedom of speech does not give the right to offend". I wish he had told his audience what speech which does NOT offend someone even needs protection. Of course, the double standard is blatant. The Dutch government does not seem to be very interested in prosecuting the horrific offensive speech of many Muslims. I guess it is not offensive to call for public executions of homosexuals in the Netherlands, but it is a crime to offend those who call for such punishments, by criticizing them.

The trial can never be an international media event while the BBC (among others) are enforcing a total news blackout. This is just the latest episode in the BBC's long history of censorship, dhimmitude, taqiyya, brainwashing and Marxist propaganda - which is partly chronicled here: http://crombouke.blogspot.com/2010/01/bbc-appeasement-self-loathing.html

Free speech is already gone. A BNP supporter in Scotland was told by the judge, yes you are correct in what you say, but it is now hate speech. He was jailed for 12 months.

I am astounded at the ignorance of my friends who don't frequent certain web sites. They think themselves well read as far as the news go, but don't have a clue about Geert Wilders.

The media blackout here in America is an abomination!

And it's deliberate.

I hate conspiracy theories, but I do believe that this obfuscation is deliberate.

Fear of offending Moslems has taken over reasoned thinking.

Irony Alert!

Our pilgrim ancestors left Britain and moved to the Netherlands because of the personal freedoms that the Dutch allowed.

They left the Netherlands for "the Americas" four centuries ago. Just in the nick of time.

Mr. Wilders and supporters of Mr. Wilders - Comparing Mohammed the Muslim, Koran, and Muslims to Hitler the Nazi, Mein Kampf, and Nazis we see that the latter appear to be rather benevolent.
Hitler vs. Mohammed - Side by side comparisons

Comparing the sayings of Mohammed the Muslim to Buddha, Confucius, Moses and Jesus we even see more of a contrast proving that Islam is evil and vile, deadly and devilish.
Who Said What

Looks like Islam has replaced the Nazis in Europe.Jews having to relocate for fear of their lives, and freedom
to criticise being curtailed.

The outcome of Geert Wilders's trial will affect the whole of Europe. There's no doubt about that. If Geert Wilders loses Europe will turn into the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.

GRAVEN: "Another point, which serves to illustrate the Kafkaesque nature of these proceedings, is that it is not any of those who are affected by Wilders' supposed "hate speech" who are living under police protection, but rather people like Wilders himself—and others who have had the temerity to criticize Islam, such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Denmark's Kurt Westergaard."

Excellent point!

"No man escapes when freedom fails,
The best men rot in filthy jails.
And those that cry, 'Appease, Appease!'
Are hanged by those they tried to please"

by Horace Mann

This trial reminds me of a crucifixion story told long ago.

Simple solution for Geert is to open the Koran and let the hate speech and offensive language out of the 'Pandora's box'. This book justifies practically all criminal acts against non-Muhammadens. This Koranic 'hate speech' incites riots, bombings, suicide, homocide; threatening politicians, businesses and civilians; terrorism, death threats, rapes, burning houses, buildings and cars along with the intimidation that has brought this trial in the first place. This Koranically incited intimidation has forced the accusers into submission to Sharia and Islamification. They know that they are intimidated cowards who are contributing to the implosion of 'high minded' open discussion of ideas.

If he is convicted, then the Koran must be banned and all those that practice and preach it must be jailed.

Even the fact of his being tried means that the Koran and all those that preach and practice it must be tried.

Geert has an amazing opportunity to put hatefilled Muhammaden suicidal terror texts on trial. If he is able to do this while gaining enough publicity, the whole sleeping world will see that Muhammad went and Muhammadens after him go beyond 'hate speech' into 'hate filled actions'.

Muhammad's Allah is not 'Compassionate and Merciful'

I would highly recommend reading a new book out by Joel Richardson "The Islamic AntiChrist" Just one short clip will show anyone the evil, sub-human nature of Islam and Muslims. From page 129, speaking of Momo Le Nain, an Algerian "specialist" known for chopping off heads. In 1996 in Ben-Talha, a suburb of the capital Algiers, Momo cut off a record 86 heads in one night, including the heads of more than a dozen children. In recognition of his exemplary act of piety, he was sent to Mecca for pilgrimage. Last time we checked, Momo was still at large somewhere in Algeria.

The book is a real education on "the religion of peace".

Think about it, would the courts rather have Greet Wilder mad at them, or Islam? Those beheadings and other acts of terror have done there job world wide. The best thing we can do now is run like hell. Go some where where no Muslims live,.

It is Multiculturalism that is on trial. Islam is the proof of Multiculturalism's falsehood. The Press has been in bed with Multiculturalism for decades.

One really doesn't expect all these forces to willingly jump into the ash heap of history do they? A whole body of laws, implemented little by little until where today the golden ring is but inches from its grasp. The legal right to control your mind being conducted in a locked basement, in the dark, hidden from view.

I am proud to say that Canada's Jewish Tribune has reported on it.

''Failing at force protection:
.
The misguided Pentagon
report on the Ft. Hood massacre
.
Posted By Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser On February 8, 2010
"On November 5, 2009, the United States Army was viciously attacked from within by an ideologue bent on pursuing an agenda of Islamist extremism. This ideologue fell under the separatist influence of political Islam while serving as an officer. It is incumbent upon our force to begin to understand this theo-political ideology that threatens our soldiers internally and externally."
.
These critical lines are completely missing from the Pentagon’s 84-page report reviewing the massacre of 13 U.S. soldiers and contractors at Fort Hood. Yet this is only one of many omissions that the Pentagon should pursue from this incident.
.
Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire on Nov. 5 because his adherence to extreme Islamism overrode his allegiance to his country and his sworn oath to protect it against all enemies. While issues of post-traumatic stress will surely be pursued by his defense team, Hasan’s defense is not the job of the Pentagon. The Pentagon has a duty to honestly assess the root of the attack and to ensure that the military is adequately protecting our forces from the threat from within and without.
.
As a former lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy, I know the culture of the U.S. military. While I served my 11 years pre-9/11, the culture of political correctness was pervasive. This travesty of a report is front and center evidence of that paralyzing culture.
.
As a Naval physician and former chief resident at Bethesda Naval Hospital, I can also speak to the inadequacies in the counterterrorism, counter-radicalism and insurgency training of commanders like those being held to blame for Hasan’s promotion and movement up the chain of command. Studying theo-political internal threats is simply not part of the training of any military physician. Hasan’s superiors are medical professionals trained to evaluate his abilities as a physician and a psychiatrist. As we have all heard, his commanders were seriously concerned about his actions and the role his faith played in his everyday interactions with patients. Had they brought those concerns to his review process, they would have been vilified as Islamaphobes. Even had Hasan’s superiors appropriately identified his behaviors, a military discharge is light years down the path of administrative counseling and punishment he would have received. Which begs the question, would a demoted Hasan have been any less of a threat?
.
As a Muslim, I am most fearful that our entrenched mindset of victimization and political correctness is precluding a vitally necessary open discussion of faith-based issues both inside and outside of the military. The current military and governmental culture precluded Hasan’s superiors from questioning anything relating to his faith.
At a Jan. 15, 2010, press conference Secretary Robert Gates himself confirmed this state of affairs:
"Current policies on prohibited activities provide neither the authority nor the tools for commanders and supervisors to intervene when DOD personnel {are}at risk of personal radicalization."
Yet the secretary has recommended Secretary of the Army John McHugh "take appropriate action" with regards to the report’s recommendations for "personnel responsible for supervising Major Hasan." Those recommendations include career-ending reprimands for several of his superiors.
How can we hold these soldiers responsible for not preventing Hasan’s actions if we aren’t giving them the environment and the tools they need to confront Islamist radicalization? The military cannot allow the mantra of victimization of Muslims to dominate how it handles force protection. Islamist radicalization is real and it cannot be confronted unless we are honest about the threat it represents. Hasan is not the first soldier to be radicalized and he won’t be the last if we do not address the real issues.
.
I recently had a conversation with a friend who is a colonel in the U.S. Army and does quite a bit of force training. He had an interaction with one of the active-duty military imams, which concerned him, but because of political correctness he had nowhere to go with those concerns. So he bounced it off me.
.
He asked an active duty imam what he would say to a soldier who came to him asking if it was against "our faith" to fight against Muslims. The imam replied that he would tell the soldier that, "I am not qualified to answer the question." The imam felt that the question was asking for an official fatwa, a legal ‘religious opinion or ruling."
.
The colonel was dumbfounded and pressed the Imam further asking him, "then who is qualified and who would he send the soldier to for an answer." The Imam replied that he would refer the soldier to the Islamic Society of North America who is the outsourced certifying agency of Muslim Chaplains in the U.S. military. Unfortunately, ISNA is also a political Islamist organization that has been overly critical of the United States wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
ISNA glorified Imam Zaid Shakir’s response to the Fort Hood massacre as an example for their entire membership. As an American Muslim, I was frankly offended by his first paragraph demonstrating his and thus ISNA’s disdain for our military. Shakir opens his pathetic response by saying,
"There is no legitimate reason for their deaths, just as I firmly believe there is no legitimate reason for the deaths of the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi and Afghani civilians who have perished as a result of those two conflicts. Even though I disagree with the continued prosecution of those wars, and even though I believe that the US war machine is the single greatest threat to world peace, I must commend the top military brass at Fort Hood, and President Obama for encouraging restraint and for refusing to attribute the crime allegedly perpetrated by Major Nidal Malik Hasan to Islam."
This is the organization that an active-duty imam uses for guidance?
.
It is ridiculous that our military would be "outsourcing" spiritual guidance for our force members. It is insane that they would utilize ISNA when they are part and parcel of the problem. ISNA’s roots are in the global project of the Muslim Brotherhood. They were listed as an unindicted coconspirator in the successful Holy Land Foundation terror financing trial of 2008. They refuse to recognize the separatist influence of Islamist ideology. The Imam’s use of ISNA is akin to the Trojans bringing the Greek’s horse inside the fortress. Our military should never farm such deeply essential counseling out.
.
As to the answer the imam should have given. He should have told the Colonel that he would counsel the Muslim military member that not only does his oath to this country and the military take precedence over any other oath, but the concept of the ummah (as Islamic nation) is dead and no longer relevant or competing for his allegiance from a spiritual perspective. There have been many wars fought between Muslims and this war is not a war against Muslims or Islam, but rather one to free the Iraqi and Afghani populations from their despots. If our active duty Muslim imams cannot confer such advice upon our Muslim soldiers they are a significant liability to our force protection.
.
When we are unable to discuss complex issues like this and Hasan without the fear of reprisal or labels, we create a vacuum where no discourse is taking place. In that vacuum, we allow the seeds of discontent to grow. For Nidal Hasan that culminated in his superiors ignoring his behaviors and eventually sending him to Fort Hood, where his fate was sealed.
.
The Pentagon’s review should be revised to look at the broader picture of Hasan’s path to radicalization through political Islam. They should analyze the warning signs that were visible and determine how the military could have better protected its soldiers. They should look at the threat that political Islam and its forms of radicalization have upon American Muslims and contractors that we employ abroad, like the informant who killed seven CIA officers last December.
.
The protection of our forces requires a better understanding of the enemy we face. An honest assessment of the Fort Hood massacre would not limit the scope of the review. It would also not allow the scapegoating of soldiers instead of fighting the root theo-political problems. Hasan’s victims deserve a full revision of how the United States military handles Islamist radicalization within its ranks. Without it we will see many more Nidal Hasans and in the end a weaker force and a weaker nation.

Josephine - I clicked on the link and it's a good, clear report.

Kudos to the Jewish Tribune!

I assume you've written to them to commend them for publishing this very important news story?

If none of the big Canadian newspapers has seen fit to cover the Wilders trial, then the Jewish Tribune has just placed itself way out in front of the big players as a newspaper worthy to be *called* a newspaper.

DDA -- I know of a few people who wrote to commend the Jewish Tribune for its coverage.

The print version and .pdf also featured a photograph that showed one of the speakers alongside a framed, autographed print of the Mohammed-in-a-bomb-turban drawing that was displayed on stage.

The National Post has reported on the Wilders trial but did not cover the Toronto rally.
