The alleged "ban" on musical instruments has to do with the cultural context of the time, in which music accompanied and encouraged immoral sexual behavior and idolatry. The modern equivalent would be rock or rap music. The idea that Islam bans all music, including such as classical and jazz music, is simply wrong (unless you're a Wahhabi). Many mainstream Islamic clerics agree upon this. In addition, the post above is self-contradictory. If there IS a traditional Iraqi form of music or musical instrument, and Iraq has been Islamic almost since the time of the Prophet (upon whom be peace), then how was the development of such music possible? Has music survived in secret for 13 centuries? Of course not. This is Wahhabism, not traditional Islam. Educate yourself and stop spreading irrational hatred and fear.
This is what Islam gives us, nutcase. A miserable and joyless world with no art, no music of any kind, i.e. no Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beethoven or Mozart, no pubs, no nightclubs, no joy, and where playing a flute or guitar can mean death. Therefore, Allah has stated that all music is bad and your attempts at "reinterpreting it" and changing so much of a word of it constitutes apostasy, and many Muzzies would kill you right now given the chance.
Tell me, do you wish to disobey Allah? If Mohammed were to repeat to you what was in the Hadith to your face then would you avoid all music like cancer in order to keep your ears being filled with molten lead? Or would you dare to defy him.

The Wahhabi movement is from the Sunni branch of Islam, born (and fostered to this day) in overwhelmingly Sunni Saudi Arabia. Perhaps the poster would like to explain how this Wahhabi jihad against musical instrument was adopted so readily by the Shiites of Sadr City if we are to believe that the ban on musical instruments is solely a Wahhabi phenomenon.

If one follows strictly, to the letter, Islam, then music is to be banned. And in some settings this is true. For example, think of the vast corpus of sacred music, church music, in Christianity as compared to the complete absence of any analogous music in the mosque. The Muslim apologist above who points to some examples of popular music and claims that this rebuts those who say Islam bans or at least discourages music, is ignoring the fact that not everyone is necessarily strict in his observances, but that the rules as to What Is Commanded and What Is Prohibited are there, and at any time may, if Islam is taken more fully to heart (and when, or why, that happens to any individual Muslim is not predictable, least of all by non-Muslims) be enforced. See what the Taliban did to wedding-singers in Afghanistan. See what happens to some music and DVD stores in Hamastan, that is Gaza. See what happens to the RAI singers of Algeria, some of them actually murdered by those most fanatical in their faith.
Whatever musical tradition previously existed in lands then conquered by Islam were soon subject to constraints and the result was the musical impoverishment we see today.
