An "important Taliban militant" was arrested today in Pakistan. But that is where the confusion started.Earlier it was reported by Pakistani media that intelligence agents had arrested Adam Gadahn, the American-born spokesman for al Qaeda, in an operation in the southern city of Karachi.
It was further reported by the Associated Press and Reuters that Gadahn had been arrested, sourcing security officials.
CBS News was told by sources in the Pakistan government that it was Gadahn, even after U.S. officials refused to confirm it was the California native for whom a $1 million reward has been posted.
Now, CBS News' Farhan Bokhari in Islamabad writes that earlier reports the detained individual was Gadahn proved false. According to a Pakistan security official who spoke with CBS News on condition of anonymity, the arrested individual is in fact "a Taliban militant leader who is known as Abu Yahya."
The official said evidence compiled from an interrogation of the suspect and information exchanged with U.S. officials verified the man's identify.
The reassessment only added to the confusion surrounding the arrest of a man earlier described by other unnamed Pakistani security officials as Gadahn.
"In the light of our latest information, I can say, this is not looking like Gadahn. But it is still the arrest of an important Taliban militant," said the Pakistani security official who spoke to CBS News late Sunday.
The New York Times, sourcing American and Pakistani officials, reports that the man arrested was Abu Yahya Mujahdeen Al-Adam, and describes him as an al Qaeda commander who was born in Pennsylvania....

This why I hesitated to comment on the possible arrest fo Gadahn. It wasn't to long ago that we also received bogus news that he had been killed in a strike.
Until I see him in custody of the US I'm not going to hold my breath. No doubt if we take this creep alive and the fact that was an American citizen he will qualify for a civilian trial Unless there are different guidelines for those officially accused as traitors to America.

Thanks much, Wellington - I've been away for a while, at least from the comments section, and my regular desk, and sat down to the aribic script hanging down, stating "We will NOT submit to your jihad", and then went to post, and the rest is history.

Did any one else realize how Pakistan is "capturing" so many high profile Taliban leaders from Karachi in the last few days? Karachi is the largest Pakistani city, far away from the Taliban strongholds in the FATA region. Yet, strangely all these Taliban leaders are being captured from one of the most secure cities of Pakistan. Strange, isn't it?
Actually it is not. Few days ago, US agreed to transfer several smart bomb kits & drone technology, which are some of the long standing demands of Pakistan.

By arresting or killing few Taliban leaders, I guess Pakistan is temporarily giving every one an impression that it is seriously working to get rid of the Taliban (that its secret service is protecting till now).
This weapon technology transfer should also make the Chinese happy, as they are the closest allies of Pakistan. Perhaps they are looking forward to lay hands on these weapons as soon as possible to reverse engineer them.
Considering the way Pakistan has acted in the past (proliferating nuclear technology to rogue nations like North Korea, Libya, etc), I still fail to understand why US is taking such a big risk here.
Also, this is not the first time for Pakistan to illegally modify weapons it has received from US. Recently, US has accused Pakistan of illegally modifying American-made missiles to expand its capability to strike land targets, a potential threat to India.

The Americans are not stupid; they know that giving a little technology to Pakistan yields high value targets (i.e. gets them what they want).
The Americans have probably got replacements for what they are giving to Pakistan and Pakistan will have signed NDAs so there should be no problems there.

Just like we experienced blowback from the taliban and bin laden after years of supporting them, I'm afraid the continued policies of military and economic support for Pakistan will also backfire against us but in a much more dramatic and destructive fashion than just the terrorist attacks here and there which we are experiencing at the moment. Their nuclear proliferation to countries at odds with the USA soon after they developed nuke technology was an act of war. Somonee in our top brass could not make the decision to play tough and allowed the security of the entire planet to be placed at such high risk and someday lead to armagedon.
They have now developed over 100 nuclear warheads some of which fit ballistic missiles. They are even trying to develop a submarine fleet, meanwhile our actions not only counteract this but encourage it to the tune of billions and much technology transfer..
This is a catastrophic policy for which we are destined to pay immeasurably.
