The dhimmitude and self-censorship on Facebook's part, however, may not be a given in this case. The creator of the site says he is redesigning it and that it will be back. We'll see. Free Speech Death Watch Update: "'Allah is'... angering Muslims?," by Rachelle Kliger for The Media Line News Agency, March 17:
Thousands of Muslim Facebook users have pushed to remove an Arabic-language Facebook page created by a user taking on the identity of Allah, or God.The user claimed he/she was an atheist and believed in no God but him/herself, saying that Muslim prophets would be able to connect with users through the site and answer their questions, according to news reports.
The page, displaying warped Koranic verses and making fun of Islam, soon garnered a 600,000 strong following and drew thousands of responses to its status updates, many of them scolding the creator.
Campaigners who said it was an insult to Islam and to God demanded Facebook remove the page and some even urged users to boycott Facebook altogether.
While campaigners are viewing the removal of the page on Tuesday as an indication of their success, the creator of the controversial profile page said she (or he) removed it to create a new look.
Olivier Bassile, chief executive of Reporters Without Borders to the European Union and head of the organization's Belgian office, said censorship of the material was the wrong strategy by Facebook, if Facebook did indeed remove the page under pressure.
"It's related to freedom of expression," he told The Media Line new agency. "It was only logical that one day Facebook and other social media would face this pressure because the traditional media is already suffering from this pressure."...
Dr. Abeer Najjar, a media researcher at the American University of Sharjah, said she would not consider the response by Facebook of removing the page as indication that freedom of speech was under threat, as long as the request came from the public, but she warned that such calls are often used by governments to legitimize censorship.
"The problem is that when the public asks for it, it encourages the authorities and gives them legitimacy to censor other things," she told The Media Line. "The fundamental problem is that it empowers the governments and gives them a green light for more censorship."
Uh, yeah.
The United Arab Emirates' Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) went as far as to instruct all Internet service providers in the UAE to block the offensive page, following numerous calls and complaints from Internet users who were angry about the site.Counter campaigns to the Allah page drew more than 100,000 people, including the "20 million campaign to close down the group of the heretic who claims he's God" that drew more than 52,000 and other campaigns that called on Muslim users to boycott the popular website....
Hey! Bobblehead Muhammad's Myspace page is still up!

If I was Allah (the real one), I might be a little peeved that the believers are leading the charge to remove my Facebook account. Since Allah created everything, obviously Allah created this Facebook account. How dare these so-called Muslims deny Allah his rightful place among the mere mortals on Facebook!!!!
Jeez-Louise!

LOL I love it.
If I was Allah (the real one)...
Is it possible, just maybe, that 1.2 billion self-disfigured persons are worshipping a figment of the awful Mohammed's fever swamp of a mind?

For all his talk about hypocrites and liars, he sure does look like the pot calling the kettle black.
Since Allah is omnipotent, mere humans can't keep him off the net. Here is his latest message to the faithful: http://crombouke.blogspot.com/2010/01/message-from-allah.html
"The problem is that when the public asks for it, it encourages the authorities and gives them legitimacy to censor other things... The fundamental problem is that it empowers the governments and gives them a green light for more censorship." -- Dr. Abeer Najjar
Dr. Najjar is slyly exculpating Islam here, and blaming it on corrupt dictators. The real problem, which she is avoiding by her locution, is that with Muslim people, the demos itself is diseased, so that any democracy in terms of the will of the Muslim people will turn out to be the Gulag of the body and soul they actually desire.
I personally think that the page should be allowed on Facebook. There is a page on there called,"Black and Proud" there are somethings on the page that I "could" find offensive. So there is someone using the word Allah, and it "offends" Muslims. Well don't F---ing look at the page! Facebook needs to grow some balls an let the Member keep their page. What Dr. Najjar fails to mention is, by Facebook taking the member off line; Facebook is now being TOO PC!!!!! Stop giving in to Muslims!
Don't muslims ever get tired of whining 'n complaining and micromanaging every little thing on earth? My gosh! ...I mean here we go again.
There is no peace or rest for the wicked.
sean,
Thanks for the link. The article about the "allah meat" was interesting, especially the bit about muslims seeing "allah" written on the moon! And visible from Earth! What a miracle.
That butcher is hideous. I wouldn't want him touching my meat. Or anything else, for that matter.
lol champ, you took the words right out of my fingers!
Great minds....

Excellent point, Hesperado. And the reason corrupt dictators are so prevalent in the Muslim world itself is no accident of history, but has *everything* to with the nature of Islam.
The only thing that muddies the waters in this case is that Facebook is a private company, and not an agency of any government.
But Facebook is not here following its own reasoned ethics, but bowing to pressure and the implicit threat of violence from the always-aggrieved Ummah.

Jut went to the bobblehead mo site. Great! funny as hell!
I'm gonna have fun there!
Do you have an email address, AI? Thanks :)
Must be a hot site. I got a repetitive audio message saying: "this account has used its daily bandwidth allowance, blah, blah, blah" I did like the bobblehead mo!
Sure champ...

Facebook actually took down all anti-Islam sites about a week ago, then after people complained they did a flip-flop and restored them, to their credit. Everybody who reads Jihad Watch should go on FB and sign up for all anti-Islam groups they can to support them, they're all full of great articles and info. Go to my FB page (T.L. Winslow) and see what groups I joined to get a fast start.
And keep studying Islam's history with the Historyscoper to expand your mind with a mental map that will serve you well at http://go.to/islamhistory
Thank you, AI! :)
AI and champ, I took the address too.... :)
Maybe AI can forward your address to me after he gets it?
Hope you don't mind!
No sweat on my end...
Yes! ...of course you may have it, Gymgal! Sorry I didn't read this sooner, girlfriend :)
Absolutely, please give Gymgal my email address, and thank you in advance, Alaskan!
Yep you betcha...no prollem.
