The return to sectarian violence in the Plateau State city of Jos has been largely described as a revenge from the deadly attacks in January. It has also been reported that some of the perpetrators were mercenaries from neighboring Chad and Niger.
Following the sacking of the country's national security adviser, Sarki Mukhtar, in an apparent response to the sectarian killings by Nigeria's acting president Mr. Goodluck Jonathan, reports have revealed that Mercenaries from Niger and Chad may have participated in the attacks on Christian villages that claimed hundreds of lives. Those who died were reported to be mainly women and children.
"Many people come into Nigeria under the pretext of being pastoralists, they are mercenaries [from Chad, Niger]. They follow pastoralist routes to gain entrance, carry out their activities and then leave," the head of the northern area of Nigeria's Christian Association Mr. Saidu Dogo was quoted as saying.
Mr. Dogo urged the international community to become more actively involved as, he said, the government was unable to protect its own people. "We feel that the world just has to do something. If the Nigerian government cannot do something then the world has to do something to stop this killing," Mr. Dogo added.
Analysts have described the attack on the three villages near the Plateau state capital, Jos, as an act of revenge carried out by members of the mainly Muslim Fulani community who had fallen prey to violent attacks in January. Human Rights Watch had reported that the sectarian violence in January may have claimed the lives of at least "364 Muslims".
Above is an extremely deceptive description of the situation in Jos, implying that Christians fired the first proverbial shot, and that the conflict is new. A prior report on the situation in January said "Two pastors and 46 other Christians were killed in the outbreak of violence in Jos on Jan. 17, triggered when Muslim youths attacked a Catholic church; 10 church buildings were burned, and police estimated more than 300 lives were lost in the clash."

Angry Muslim youths set fire to a church filled with worshipers, starting a riot that killed at least 27 people and wounded more than 300 in Jos, in northern Nigeria, officials said Monday. Sani Mudi, a spokesman for the local imam, said 22 people died in fighting between Christians and Muslims after rioters set fire to a Catholic church on Sunday.

According to reports, Nigerian troops are patrolling the villages which were targeted on Sunday in a bid to prevent further violence and police say they have arrested more than 90 people suspected of inciting violence. Nonetheless villagers from the nearby communities have began to flee the area for fear of fresh bouts of violence.
"We are fleeing our village because we are afraid we might be the next target of attack by these Fulani. They have been making phone calls warning they are going to attack. We take these threats seriously. We don't want to be caught off-guard," AFP quoted a local resident as saying.
The Plateau State Christian Elders Consultative Forum complained that it had taken the army two hours to react after receiving a distress call: "For quite some time we have alerted the government to training grounds in some parts of the northern state where people are being trained to cause problems in the country... Governor of Plateau state Mr. Jonah Jang said he had warned the army about reports of suspicious people with weapons hours before they attacked, but they failed to take action. "Three hours or so later, I was woken by a call that they have started burning the village and people were been hacked to death. I tried to locate the commanders. I couldn't get any of them on the telephone," Mr. Jang was quoted as saying....

efoc - These problems happen in Nigeria because they have a North-South type of divide. Muslims on one side and christians on the other.
If you don't have these dividing lines and the people are mixed in (like salt and pepper say) then it cannot happen.
This is why if there is a predominantly christian area, please invite muslims to come and live amongst you.
Equally if it's a predominant muslim area, christians should buy a house/rent in that area to keep a good mix of religions in that area.
Be advised that the muslims that I supervise are very friendly, hard working and live in my area (I am not a muslims). I am happy that these problems will not be replicated in my area.
Hey guys, thanks for your responses. Trust me, I already do plenty of stuff with regards to getting the truth out there. I've upped the ante with some websites I blog at. It's just that sometimes you don't know how much of what you do is getting out there to the right audience and how many people are being won over. I guess part of it just comes down to persistence and remaining steadfast as per the example of Robert Spencer and Jihad Watch.
I realise my post wasn't an inspiring one to get this blog started with and, if anything, I was just letting off some steam and exasperation. Next time I shall do it differently. Thanks for your suggestions though, especially the one about the loaded 22.

Deeply disturbing. I'm not sure if this was because the army is deep in denial, or if this member of the Christian Elders Consultative Forum reached a member of the Religion of Peace with Jihad sympathies when he made his desperate call.

However, your leading article reflects an inaccurate misrepresentation of the history of violence in referring to “a Christian-on-Muslim attack in January”. There are always claims and counter-claims, but on that occasion, reports clearly indicated that the killings began when Muslim youths attacked Christians on a Sunday morning, on their way to church. Muslims were also killed as those under attack began to fight back.
In the violent attacks, not only in Plateau state, but also in neighbouring Bauchi and other northern states, a consistent pattern has emerged: they are initiated by well-armed Muslim extremists, chanting militant slogans, attacking and killing Christian and other non-Muslim citizens and destroying homes and places of worship.
In the early stages of the attack, the Muslim militants take corpses to mosques, where they are photographed and released to the media, creating the impression that these are Muslim victims. The security forces have reportedly been too slow to intervene to stop the massacres. Subsequent retaliation has led to the deaths of Muslims, some of whom also died when security forces eventually intervened.
During our last visit, I met Muslim and Christian leaders who are committed to trying to promote peace but their endeavours will not be helped by misunderstanding the reality of the situation. All the evidence on the ground indicates that these acts of violence are not primarily political or tribal. They are instigated by militant Islamist extremists.
Several years ago I had the privilege of co-founding the International Islamic Christian Organisation for Reconciliation and Reconstruction in Indonesia, after attacks by Islamist extremists on the Muslim and Christian communities in Maluku and Sulawesi. It was very successful in preventing recurrence of fighting. Perhaps a similar initiative might help those Christian and Muslim leaders in Nigeria now trying to stem the violence?

I think I recall reading that the army in Nigeria - as also in other similar countries in Africa - is heavily infiltrated by - and indeed, perhaps, controlled by - the Muslims.
A common feature of Muslim infiltration of any country is that they go straight for the levers of power, official and unofficial. In most African countries with significant Muslim populations the Muslims are heavily over-represented in, or even control, the army and police force. They also - not only in Africa, but across the world - go for control of transport (trucking, taxis, work in airports, etc), and communications (a *Muslim* has just been appointed as *head of Australia Post* [!!!]). And, of course, politics: from the school board or village council or town or county council, on up. And whatever organised crime is present before the Muslims arrive will be quickly displaced or absorbed by *Muslim* organised criminals/ gangs. (Tim Priest's classic article, 'The Rise of Middle Eastern Crime in Australia' is a good account of that process - it is deficient only in that he should have called it 'the rise of Muslim crime in Australia' or even just 'Jihad arrives in Australia', and he should have made it clearer, in the body of the article, that the problem was not 'middle eastern' - Arab or Lebanese - ethnicity, but ideology - ISLAM - since Muslims of NON-'Middle Eastern' extraction in Australia were already proving just as troublesome as the Lebanese/ Arab Muslims).

Pursuant to my posting above - I forgot to add that in Australia (and, I suspect, in many other countries also), Muslims have been getting jobs as *security guards*.
And not so long ago it was revealed that a few such - most imperfectly trained by a fraudulent institution run by a Muslim - were hired to guard the gates at...*an army base*. The news reports were most upset about the financial fraud involved, and about the lack of any real training that these guys had received; me, I was far more worried about the fact that our military had hired *Muslims* as 'security' guards (this being hot on the heels of the exposure of a Jihad plot to attack ...an Aussie army base).
