Qur'an 33:21 calls Muhammad "a beautiful pattern of conduct." Muhammad did not like music. In fact, he said "Allah Mighty and Majestic sent me as a guidance and mercy to believers and commanded me to do away with musical instruments, flutes, strings, crucifixes, and the affair of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance," and "On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will pour molten lead into the ears of whoever sits listening to a songstress."

Islamabad, 3 March (AKI/DAWN) - Taliban militants have blown up a boys' school in the Khyber Agency in Pakistan's tribal region while others threw grenades at a concert, killing a student, officials said on Wednesday. The boys' school attack took place overnight in the Spin Qabar area of Khyber near the Afghan border.
"All four rooms of the government boys primary school were completely destroyed. Taliban are responsible," Khyber's top administrative official Shafirillah Khan said. There were no injuries in the attack.
Militants who advocate strict Sharia law have destroyed hundreds of schools, mostly for girls, in northwest Pakistan in recent years -- 16 were destroyed in the last month.
In the southwestern province of Baluchistan, militants threw three grenades during a cultural presentation at a university in Khuzdar district, 300 kilometres south of the provincial capital Quetta.
One student was killed and 13 others were injured in the attack.

Music actually is tonal mathematics. This is a creation of a very good, powerful and very intelligent God. It charms us and lifts us to a higher plane of existence.
Only a very perverse and evil force could deny its creations the glimpse of paradise that music brings to the soul.
When Jehovah created the universe, He pronounced it very good. Of course, some things have been perverted by man along the way, but to hate any of His creatures such as dogs or swine or beauties that He has made for us, is certainly the mark of the wicked one.

I wonder how many unfortunate people got that treatment who were not listening to any music, but managed to pzz off Allah and his favorite hound dog Mahound...'You ain't nothin but a hound dog'...hows that for music?...
I've explained to myself a lot of Mo's edicts as making good sense for a plundering army, but I'm at a loss to explain the death penalty for listening to music. It really DOES seem like something Satan would think up: "Let's see if they'll obey THAT one, heh heh."
Has anyone heard a reasonable explanation from a Muslim beyond "He said it was so, and this was probably NOT another Satanic Verse"?

Writes Trifkovic: "Music did not fare any better with Mohammed than poetry. That mainstream Islam has no music, and that there is no singing at the mosque, may be related to Mohammed's view that:
"None raised up his voice with a song but allah sent him two devils upon his shoulders who beat his chest with their heels till he stopped".
'He [Mohammed] once heard the sound of a flute and put his fingers in his ears and turned to go another way'".
Trifkovic cites the source for these two anecdotes, as follows - 'Al Hadis, book 2, chapter 12, no. 283', and 'Al-Hadis, book 2, chapter 12, no 20'.
When I googled 'Al-Hadis', I found it listed among the offerings of a modern Sunni Muslim online bookstore, as follows - "Al-Hadis - an English translation [by Maulan Fadlul Karim] and commentary of the Mishkat al-Masabih".
Kinana of Khaybar informs me that the Mishkat al-Masabih is a popular secondar source, compiling hadiths from Bukhari, Muslim and Ibn Dawud.
I must say that whenever I encounter the jihad-minded sharia-pushing Muslims' response to music, and indeed to all the best art, music, and the order and beauty of high kafir civilisation, I am reminded of this passage from C S Lewis's attempt to get inside the mind of Hell, in his "Screwtape Letters":
