Pakistan: Mob of “pro-Taliban radicals” beats student to death for playing music

Emulating Muhammad’s profound hostility toward music. “Student beaten to death for playing music,” from Big News Network, March 20:

A student has died after being beaten to death by pro-Taliban radicals at a Pakistani university.

The beating, which occurred earlier in the week, culminated in the death of Anan Khan, who attended the University of Engineering & Technology in Peshawar.

He was severely beaten with several other students at the university by members of a student wing of the hard-line Jamiat-e Islami party.

Witnesses have said the IJT attacked Adnan for playing music.

Members of the IJT have a record of breaking up music appreciation functions and dance parties on the campus.

Islam does everything it can to destroy the human spirit…the desire for life and happiness…and the will to enjoy life…

The Islamic thugs have no problem with music on their beheading videos, nor their propoganda videos…They can have music…but you cannot….

As usual…the Muslim thugs are blaming the other guy…It makes no difference if the other guy is a Muslim too…

Life with Islam is going to be miserable no matter where you are..The Muslims will see to it…

This is outrageous, but not surprising coming from the Taliban, and in a country that doesn’t see the value of having a national symphony. Even Iraq has a national symphony. No mention in the story about what type of music it was. Beethoven? Pavarotti? Elvis? Hank Williams? Eminem? Snoop Dog? (If the latter, I could almost sympathize with the attackers – with apologies to anyone who might happen to like hip hop/rap music.)

I would not die a sheep. I just don’t get it. It’s quite clear to me that those students were/are in far greater danger of losing their lives than I am/was mine. One would think that they would have been prepared to defend themselves.
I packed a piece for years to deter my ex brother in law from killing me. (He’d killed at least 4 men that I knew of and I did not wish to join them.)
I’m quite sure that he did not present as great a danger to life and limb as these muslim scum present to their own fellow muslim music enthusiasts.
A small club or blade can go a long way toward killing a man if you study up on it a little. If the members of this student group discovered that their prey might strike out, attacks would go down. Cowards scatter in the face of danger and these are clearly cowards at work.

    islam is a lie and
    Truth is killing it.

I’ve been in dar al islam too long.

I feel no sympathy for muslims, even women, killed by their fellow muslims.

I would bet my eye teeth that Adnan Khan posted or would have posted, if given a chance, on boards such as this declaring that these actions are from “not real muslims,” “people corrupting islam,” “radicals” “Jews pretending to be muslims,” “CIA pretending to be muslims….” feel free to insert any ridiculous mohammadan excuses/lies.

As for the women, the venom that spews from their mouths is just as deadly as the actions of these “misunderstanders” of islam.

Why should I feel sympathy for jackals that are set upon by their own pack?

Reply Yep, the women and children are just as bad and black-hearted as the menfolk. We’ve seen pictures of Muslim women and children celebrating the 9/11 atrocity with the same enthusiasm as any of the men.

They played infidel music that´s why they were attacked by the true believers.

Muhammad actually allowed music and he especially loved the song: “The full moon had come upon us” – a tribute to islamic lunacy.

There is not a single Noble Verse in the Noble Quran that prohibits music. In fact, music and songs are allowed in the Noble Quran. Some Muslims however claim that Prophet Muhammad did prohibit music. Well, the section below actually proves the otherwise from the Sayings of Prophet Muhammad himself.

Muslims must also remember that when Prophet Muhammad reached the Holy City of Madina from the Holy City of Mecca with his best friend Abu Bakr the Muslims played music and sang the famous Islamic song “Talaa El-Badru Alayna” which means “The full moon had come upon us.”

The music that Prophet Muhammad prohibited was the one that the infidels used to play which involved sexual activities by the women. It was part of the pagan Arabs’ custom, and Prophet Muhammad wanted to prevent Muslims to be anywhere near that type of music, because it was a sinful music; a music that led to sinful activities.

    Prophet Muhammad allowed music:

From Bukhari Volume 2, Book 15, Number 70:

    “Narrated Aisha:

Allah’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Buath (a story about the war between the two tribes of the Ansar, the Khazraj and the Aus, before Islam). The Prophet (p.b.u.h) lay down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to me harshly saying, “Musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet (p.b.u.h)? ” Allah’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) turned his face towards him and said, “Leave them.” When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I signaled to those girls to go out and they left. It was the day of ‘Id, and the Black people were playing with shields and spears; so either I requested the Prophet (p.b.u.h) or he asked me whether I would like to see the display. I replied in the affirmative. Then the Prophet (p.b.u.h) made me stand behind him and my cheek was touching his cheek and he was saying, “Carry on! O Bani Arfida,” till I got tired. The Prophet (p.b.u.h) asked me, “Are you satisfied (Is that sufficient for you)?” I replied in the affirmative and he told me to leave.”

At least, this is what the Gujarat Anti Terror Squad (ATS) has stumbled on, while interrogating the HM’s alleged terror agent Bashir Ahmed Baba, suspected to have been scouting in Gujarat for impressionable recruits for terror training in HM facilities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The 32-year-old Bashir, known in his home state Kashmir as the Pepsi Bomber (for his alleged expertise in turning empty cans of soft drinks into explosive devices), had been asked by his HM handler in PoK , Bilal Shera, to use the movie as an indoctrination tool.

ATS sources say Bashir was specifically told to use the movie to propagate the idea that Muslim youth across the world were perennially facing humiliation and derision, and they need to come together for jihad.Baba was nabbed on March 13 from Anand, while using the alleged cover of a medical camp trainer as he went about getting a network together to recruit young men for the HM. Sources said the ATS recovered from Bashir a ticket for the Shah Rukh Khan movie at the Fun Republic Theatre in Ahmedabad and grilled him on it.

Bashir, the sources said, confessed that he had gone to see the movie as instructed by his boss in PoK, Bilal Shera. After watching the movie, he made a call to Bilal who asked him to describe its content and what he thought of it.According to ATS sources, Bashir told Bilal that it was a “nice movie, Shahrukh Khan acted well.” Bilal snubbed him and told him that he was sent to watch the movie to realise how it conveyed that Muslims were being subjected to atrocities and discrimination all over the world. The handler asked Bashir to get as many young Muslims as possible to watch the movie and drive home the point.

ATS sources added that following his handler’s instructions, Bashir focussed on at least three specific areas in Ahmedabad – Law Gardern, Lal Darwaza and Kankaria – to take groups of young men to watch the movie. Sources also added that Bashir even had got pirated CDs of the movie made and handed them to some of them for distribution.Gujarat ATS chief Ajay Tomar declined to discuss the issue, insisting it would hamper the ATS probe into Bashir’s links. “I would not like to say anything on this, it will harm our investigation. We will let you know about this at an appropriate time,” he added.

Tomar, however, added that the ATS had not found if the movie’s CDs were actually distributed.and they need to come together for jihad.

Here is a true, but sad story of two Muslims who admired and loved music.

One, A. R. Rahman, was fortunate enough to be born in a generally hated by Muslims land of the infidel, unbelievers, “little people, the Hindus” or also known as India.

The other, Anan Khan was unfortunate enough to be born in the “land of the Pure” or Islamic Republic of Pakistan, which was artificially carved out of India, based on “religious superiority complex” by the then British rulers.

Both were good Muslims who pursued their love for Music.

The Indian Muslim, A R Rahman was applauded, rewarded and encouraged mostly by “little people-Hindus” at first and then the world at large. He became very successful and wealthy.
In fact, Rahman was the 1995 recipient of the Mauritius National Award and the Malaysian Award for contributions to music. He was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for his first West-End production. A four-time National Film Award winner and conferred the Padma Shri from the Government of India, Rahman has also received six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, thirteen Filmfare Awards and twelve Filmfare Awards South for his music and scores. In 2006, he received an honorary award from Stanford University for contributions to global music. In 2009, for his score of Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman won the Critics’ Choice Award, the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music, and two Academy Awards for Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song at the 2009 Oscars. Middlesex University and Aligarh Muslim University have announced that they plan to bestow honorary doctorates on Rahman. He has also won two Grammy Awards, for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album and Best Song Written for a Visual Media. Rahman was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honor, in 2010.

On the other hand, the unfortunate Pakistani Muslim, Anan Khan, was brutally killed for his love of music by his own fellow Muslim Pakistanis.

    Do you get the picture?

It more probable they would use them against those they really hate…like Christians, not thoroughly supportive Islamic warlords, and other “undesirables”…like the US troops whose government keeps funneling billions of dollars to their coffers….

What or who is Karachi and Quetta that the Pakistanis want to protect? Ayman Al-Zawarhi or that Islamic poster boy Osama bin-Laden? Maybe there are Islamic safe-houses in these areas harboring the numerous “advisors” from Iran or North Korea….maybe there are weapons storehouses filled with weapons and explosives generously donated by Iran and North Korea…just maybe there are chemical and biological weapons storehouses filled with nasty weapons just awaiting the call for their use…

Just maybe the Pakistanis fear that strikes in these areas could cause serious setbacks to the Taliban movement that would seriously hamper their efforts to keep terrorizing the people of Pakistan and to seriously help the people shake their fear of the Taliban…

After all…Islam and the Taliban thrive in their ability to keep everyone in fear of them…remove the fear of the Taliban and remove the fear of that draconian Shar’ia law …. you just may reap grand rewards…

Mr Barcode – you did not contest the correctness here of banning certain groups of humans from certain areas of the world. For consistency then, you must not contest when others behave the same, yes? Or does one group have carte blanche, superiority over others, a different code?

And somehow, the term “YOU Americans” carries an aroma that the simpler term “Americans” lacks. If an American wanted to refer to you, reject you in the same way, what would it be – you Pakistanis, you Muslims, you Karachians? And it would pass your code of ethics, escape your scrutiny? Please clarify.

This is a page of what appears to be a pedagogical Islamic website that explains the Islamic position on music, even down to specific instruments, and dancing. It is more complex than, and contrary to what Mr Barcode presented here. For instance, Mohammed allowed *Aisha’s* musical event because *Aisha* liked it – he made an exception for Aisha; that is, this event was situational, does not speak for all time. The fact that “the Negroes from Abyssinia were sporting with their spears and daggers in the mosque”, therefore, does not imply that this is acceptable behavior under Sharia in today’s mosques.

The gist of this page is that Muslim behavior is determined strictly in accordance with the words spoken by, and examples set by Mohammed, as he was merely manifesting the will of Allah; also that infidels just don’t really get that.

    MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

r40.1 (Ibn Hajar Haytami:) As for the condemnation of musical instruments, flutes, strings, and the like by the Truthful and Trustworthy (Allah bless him and give him peace), who

“does not speak from personal caprice: it is nothing besides a revelation inspired” (Koran 53:3-4),

let those who refuse to obey him beware lest calamity strike them, or a painful torment. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:

    (1) “Allah Mighty and Majestic sent me as a guidance and mercy to believers and commanded me to do away with musical instruments, flutes, strings, crucifixes, and the affair of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.”

    (2) “On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will pour molten lead into the ears of whoever sits listening to a songstress.”

    (3) “Song makes hypocrisy grow in the heart as water does herbage.”

    (4) “This Community will experience the swallowing up of some people by the earth, metamorphosis of some into animals, and being rained upon with stones.” Someone asked, “When will this be, O Messenger of Allah?” and he said, “When songstresses and musical instruments appear and wine is held to be lawful.”

    (5) “There will be peoples of my Community who will hold fornication, silk, wine, and musical instruments to be lawful ….”

All of this is explicit and compelling textual evidence that musical instruments of all types are unlawful (Kaff al-ra’a’ ‘an muharramat al-lahw wa al-sama’ (y49), 2.269-70).

r40.2 (Nawawi:) It is unlawful to use musical instruments”such as those which drinkers are known for, like the mandolin, lute, cymbals, and flute”or to listen to them. It is permissible to play the tambourine at weddings, circumcisions, and other times, even if it has bells on its sides. Beating the kuba, a long drum with a narrow middle, is unlawful (Mughni al-muhtaj ila ma’rifa ma’ani alfaz al-Minhaj (y73), 4.429-30).

    SINGING UNACCOMPANIED BY MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

r40.3 (Ibn Hajar Haytami:) As for listening to singing that is not accompanied by instruments, one should know that singing or listening to singing is offensive except under the circumstances to be mentioned in what follows. Some scholars hold that singing is sunna at weddings and the like, and of our Imams, Ghazali and ‘Izz ibn ‘Abd al-Salam say that it is sunna if it moves one to a noble state of mind that makes one remember the hereafter. It is clear from this that all poetry which encourages good deeds, wisdom, noble qualities, abstinence from this-worldly things, or similar pious traits such as urging one to obey Allah, follow the sunna, or shun disobedience, is sunna to write, sing, or listen to, as more than one of our Imams have stated is obvious, since using a means to do good is itself doing good (Kaff al-ra’a’ ‘an muharramat al-lahw wa al-sama’ (y49), 2.273).

    DANCING

r40.4 (Nawawi: (n: with commentary by Muhammad Shirbini Khatib)) It is not prohibited to dance ((Shirbini:) which is not unlawful because it is only motions made while standing or bowing. Furani and others have expressly stated that neither is it offensive, but rather is permissible, as is attested to by the hadith related in the Sahihs of Bukhari and Muslim that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) stood before ‘A’isha (Allah be well pleased with her) to screen her from view so that she could observe the Abyssinians sporting and dancing) “unless it is languid, like the movements of the effeminate (Mughni al-muhtaj ila ma’rifa ma’am alfaz al-Minhaj (y73), 4.430). 1

    Step 1

The first step appeals to the Qur’an to justify the Shari’a laws on music, song and dance. A quotation from Sura an-Najm 53 is offered the reader. This Sura is vital, basic, and foundational to all Shari’a law. Non-Muslims readers need to stop and focus upon these verses (ayah, singular; ayat, plural), because they have profound implications for all Islamic law. Essentially, these ayat imply that Muhammad himself is a divine revelation and a pattern for all human conduct.

Here, the Qur’an states that Muhammad is neither astray nor misled. Further, it states that he neither said nor did anything of his own desire, because all his desires were only from Allah. Everything that Muhammad said, did, thought, or felt was an inspiration from Allah who is the Lord of the Universe. Since Allah, the All-Wise, taught Muhammad perfectly about everything, Muhammad was endued with wisdom, and he appeared among men as the epitome of all perfections and all virtues that could be possibly actualized in human form. Therefore, Muhammad is the perfect and pristine model for all the world to emulate.

Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled.
Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire.
It is no less than inspiration sent down to him:
He was taught by one Mighty in Power,
    Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form);
    Sura 53:2-6
    مَا ضَلَّ صَاحبكمْ وَمَا غَوَى
    وَمَا يَنطق عَن الْهَوَى
    إنْ هوَ إلَّا وَحْيٌ يوحَى
    عَلَّمَه شَديد الْقوَى
    ذو مرَّة َاسْتَوَى‭. سورة النجم
    ٥٣‫:٢-٦

Consequently, everything that Muhammad said, did, thought, or felt provides the substance for Islamic law. This point cannot be over emphasized.

    Step 2

After the quotation from the Qur’an, the next step presents historical evidence for Muhammad’s views on musical instruments. The mandolin, lute, cymbals, and flute are evil musical instruments. However, as quoted above on the authority of ‘Aisha, the hadithic traditions record that Muhammad permitted two Ansar girls to play a tambourine. Therefore, tambourines are permissible musical instruments. These instruments have to be permissible, because Muhammad is the perfection of divine wisdom on the topic of musical instruments, and he gave his tacit approval to them.

‘Aisha was 6 years old when Muhammad legally married her. He was over fifty years old at the time. The co-habited together as man and wife when she was nine years old. Naturally, she was a curious young girl. So, when the Negroes from Abyssinia were sporting with their spears and daggers in the mosque, she wanted to see the excitement. Muhammad let the young girl peer at them while she was screened by himself. After awhile, she grew bored and went back to playing.

This seemingly little episode in the life of young ‘Aisha impacted Shari’a law. It permitted dancing and spectator sports in Islam. Why? Simply because Muhammad permitted his young wife to look at the Abyssinians when they danced and sported in the mosque.

    Step 3

It is not permissible to reason about the difference between a tambourine and the mandolin, lute, cymbals, and flute. Human reason might not discern any substantial difference between these musical instruments. If these instruments were played before an ethicist, the ethicist would not be able to discern the moral status of these musical instruments from their sound or appearance. To the natural ear all these musical instruments are able to make a lovely melody. A spectral analysis of their respective audio frequencies would prove useless too. Furthermore, these musical instruments were made taboo for the remainder of human history, because Muhammad is final revealer of Allah’s sovereign will regarding mandolins, tambourines, and flutes.

We notice that the Shari’a laws on dancing and sports were justified on the basis of Muhammad’s approval of viewing the Abyssinian Negroes sporting with their spears and daggers. This justification is not an appeal to the need for exercise, common sense, health, conscience, or nature. The basis for the permission is that the activity is Sunnah. It was permitted and approved by Muhammad, and that reason suffices alone.

    Conclusion

Shari’a law is easy to understand. It begins with the Qur’an and its statement that every aspect of Muhammad’s life was inspired by Allah. Next, it looks to the historical record to determine what Muhammad said and did. Once the determination of his approvals and disapprovals are made, they are codified in Shari’a law. It is not open to rationalization or question. In fact, their faith in Muhammad’s conduct and sayings is supra-rationale or beyond rational questioning.

This does not mean that reason plays no role in Islamic law; it does. There are human activities that did not exist in Muhammad’s time. So, Shari’a scholars engage in analogical reasoning and Islamic consensus to address modern day problems. However, even here, the ancient traditions of Islam play a determinative role.

Non-Muslims have little idea how central Muhammad is to Islam. Muslims believe he is the perfection of human beauty and moral conduct. So, they want to dress like him, eat like him, think like him, live like him, worship like him, and brush their teeth like him. Of course, they are very modest about their success in these objectives.

What I’ve been noticing on some of the alternative music internet stations is a steadily-growing invasion of songs which have a very mideastern sound to them. They are done by artists who seem to be both of western and eastern origin. I am certainly against musical censorship, but I do see this as a way to get us to “Relax”. What probably happens is that amongst the high school and college-aged kids there is a very subtle form of stealth jihad in which mozoid kids will expose western kids to their mideastern music. It is OK for these mozoid kids to be hearing it because this is being done in the service of jihad. The western kids then scoff at the older generation’s fear of mozoids because, after all, now they can even listen to mozoid music with their mozoid buddies. Furthermore, that their mozoid pals even listen to music is a reason to refute the “rumors” about the strict mozoid ban on music. Then, everyone feels fine and becomes “multi-cultural”, challenging any bigotry that the older generations have against the mozoid philosophy. Currently,Western radio listeners are inculcated with songs by both Western and Eastern artists, that have distinct, traditional Arabic scale and melody structures —on Western-oriented stations. To a naive person all of this overlapping of cultural tradition can produce a false sense of security because how could these friendly musical mozoids be waging jihad? If they are truly barbarians they would not have gone so far as to become part of the enemy kuffar’s western musical radio stations and networking, it can seem. Everybody’s defenses are down and we can all enjoy these strains of mideastern music, most of which seem to have very non-offensive lyrics to them. Western musicians have always engaged in these scales and nuances , but nowadays sometimes entire songs are done in these modes by western musicians. It seems frighteningly more prevalent now among western musicians as though they, too, are trying to say there is “nothing wrong”. It is along the same lines of seductive jihad in which a mozoid male will be charming and sweet to a kuffar woman of childbearing age, with the goal being to marry her, indoctrinate her, and imprison her into the mozoid lifestyle.

“There are only two methods of dealing with an apostate. Either make him an outlaw by depriving him of his citizenship and allowing him mere existence, or end his life. The first method is definitely more severe than the second, because he exists in a state in which “he neither lives nor dies.’

Killing him is preferable. That way both his agony and the agony of society are ended simultaneously.

This was the policy adopted by the Prophets and his rightly guided caliphs…”

Clearly, member of the “devout Jamiat-e Islami considered the music-loving Adnan Khan to be apostate.

Does any one here recall when ipso facto the renaissance man first appeared?
He was as anti-muslim as they came. Every once in a while he would slip in to some anti-American weirdness and re-emerge an anti-jihadist on the other side.
Back and forth he flipped. I called him on it and he denied being anything but against the spread of islam.

Now look at him. His true colors unfurled for all to see.
He was quite the chameleon at first.
His bio when he joined was one of the most egotistical rants I ever saw. When I read it I said, “hey, you left out philosopher and brain surgeon”. It’s been so long he may have claimed to be a brain surgeon. It was just hilarious.
I’ll not question my first impressions ever again.

I want you to show me where, in any post, I EVER claimed to be all about peace and harmony. On the contrary, I’m the guy that is prepared to kill any that threaten my family with physical harm. I’m the guy that will sic 300 pound dogs on you if you seek to do me or mine harm, and will back them up with a 12 gauge shotgun and a .45 on my hip.
I threaten no one…but, like the rattlesnake, I will not be tread upon.
Now…that the subject has been raised…I most certainly have a thirst for peace. That is one of the main reasons I wish to see islam cease to exist. It’s absence would bring freedom to muslims and peace to many regions of the earth.
Man will always seek power and peace will probably never be achieved. However, with islam gone from the world, there will certainly be less Blood and Death, the two exports that islam produces in abundance.
Now..go ask the foxes, your tell staff, if they eat chickens…you moron.

Barcode your point about women being hurt and worse outside of islam is not the point we discuss here on this site. it is the “pre-ordained” orders in the koran and its other books which allows women to be treated as 2nd class citizens with no rights and therefore victims of rape, honor killings etc.
There are laws which are the result of the West’s Christians/Jewish roots that created laws to protect women and minorities. islam has no such comparisons!!!

Then there was the one the other day about some twelve year old girls being ready for sex. Uh-huh. Now he tips his hand in such an obvious way that I’m still laughing.

The origins of this music are Persian and Punjabi. Although the content appears to usually concentrate on Islamically-oriented spiritual devotion (how else could the performers escape death?) it could be seen as offering a kind of escape from the no-fun regimentation of Islamic tenets and remembering primordial pre-Islamic freedoms.

A few more observations re. music and Islam.

First of all. *Not one* of the descriptions of the Islamic ‘paradise’ to be found in the Koran, makes any mention of music, whether vocal or instrumental. It seems that no-one sings in allah’s brothel. No jazz piano. Not even a flautist accompanying a bellydancer…

Compare to that, the stereotype of the Christian heaven: people in white robes *playing golden harps and singing*.

If I recall correctly, words directly translatable by such terms as ‘music’, ‘song’ or ‘sing’ do not appear in the Quran – certainly ‘music’, ‘song’ or ‘sing’ do not appear even once in N Dawood’s English translation. I gather that there are Quranic verses that are held to be referring (in an oblique way) to music; and they do so in a pejorative fashion.

Then, in addition to the texts others have cited in this thread, there are two other anecdotes about Mohammed’s views on, and reaction to, music.

I first came across them in Serge Trifkovic’s ‘Sword of the Prophet’, where he wrote:

“Music did not fare any better with Mohammed than poetry. That mainstream Islam has no music, and that there is no singing at the mosque, may be related to Mohammed’s view that:

[QUOTE] “None raised up his voice with a song but allah sent him two devils upon his shoulders who beat his chest with their heels till he stopped”. UNQUOTE

QUOTE ‘He [Mohammed] once heard the sound of a flute and put his fingers in his ears and turned to go another way'”. UNQUOTE

Trifkovic’s reference for these two anecdotes is as follows – ‘Al Hadis, book 2, chapter 12, no. 283′, and ‘Al-Hadis, book 2, chapter 12, no 20′.

When I googled ‘Al-Hadis’, I found it among the regular offerings of a modern Sunni Muslim online bookstore. “Al-Hadis – an English translation [by Maulan Fadlul Karim] and commentary of the Mishkat al-Masabih”.

Our regular poster, Kinana of Khaybar, informed me that the Mishkat al-Masabih is a secondary source very popular among Muslims, and that it consists of a compilation of hadiths taken from from Bukhari, Muslim and Ibn Dawud.

Now, to wash out of our heads the nasty taste of the underlying hostility toward music that pervades Islam (the hostility which ensures that music persists and is practised at all, in Muslim lands, not BECAUSE of Islam, but IN DESPITE of Islam), let’s enjoy one of my favourite things, Preisner’s glorious setting of portions of 1 Corinthians 13, the hymn to divine and human Love in all its forms sacred and profane, which accompanies the closing montage of Kieslowski’s “Three Colours: Blue”. Note well that Preisner makes exquisite use of the sound of the FLUTE, that same flute which is explicitly anathematised by Muslim shari’a law. And the lovely voice of the songstress, the Polish soprano, Elzbieta Towarnicka.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmQ88PWzvR0

And let us hear also Preisner’s setting of Dante’s Paradiso, Canto II, verses 1-9, as created for Kieslowski’s ‘The Double Life of Veronique’.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0PENbPmT7Y&feature=related

Weronicka dies, but she does so having sung, gloriously, Dante’s verses describing the beginning of a spiritual journey into the Christian Heaven.

Music stands at the heart and centre of Western (and Eastern) Christian civilisation, and indeed is loved and enthusiastically practised by all known non-Muslim societies whether primitive or civilised.

The flute – despised and condemned by Islam – is, seemingly, the oldest musical instrument of which we have surviving examples:

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/06/25/2607918.htm?section=justin

Islam by its breaking of the flute, its murder of those who make or who listen to music, and its attempted silencing and actual suppression and diminishment of music, identifies itself as a mortal enemy of the human soul.

“No, we’re not having a ‘food fight’.”

Right – just kidding – a concept also noticeably missing in the ROP, and sometimes also on JW when one examines and opines on the destruction of civilization, detail by precious detail. The death of this student musician just resulted in lamenting not only the eventual loss of indigenous folk music, but also complex soul-stirring compositions sacred and profane – both dark and ebullient, and even down to particular instruments, each of which has its history, charm, greatness and humor, and some of which the Prophet was thoughtful enough to mark for execution.

Your analysis and musical examples are powerful, much appreciated. It takes some getting used to thinking of making music, listening to music, as an exercise in freedom, one that could cost your life.

We’ve seen pictures of Muslim women and children celebrating the 9/11 atrocity with the same enthusiasm as any of the men. The women were joyously ululating and handing out sweets to the cheering children when news of that atrocity broke, and if anyone couldn’t grasp the nature of Islam after the Beslan atrrocity, could the message ever get through? It is long past time to stop giving Western aid to those who wish to see us murdered in the most horrible fashion, and give infidels the horrible choice of being incinerated or crushed inside a skyscraper or jumping to their deaths from the 107th floor. This is how they repay us when we give them life-saving aid when natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis strike.

    Excellent comment, Istanbul_Chick.

A story like this one tends to perpetuate the template of PC MC, particularly its dogma of TMOETTROP (the Tiny Minority of Extremists Twisting the Religion of Peace).

I.e., the attackers are the “extremists”, while the music-playing Muslims being attacked are part of the majority of innocent, harmless, peace-loving, West-friendly Muslims of the world.

And, according to the logic of that template, we must protect that innocent Muslim majority not only from the “extremists” in their midst — we must also protect them from us, should we ever dare to follow the logical consequences of the horrible data about Islam and about Muslims, and then take action against them to protect ourselves. No, according to PC MC (which remains dominant and mainstream throughout the West and continues to infect even many of those within the still inchoate Anti-Islam Movement), it is more important to protect the innocent Muslim majority from Western potential genocide, than it is to protect the West from escalating violent jihad.

And the best way to prevent the West from going down that road, and thus the best way to protect the innocent Muslim majority from us, is to continue to perpetuate the PC MC template, by which not only is the unthinkable interdicted long before it can be thought, but anything remotely suspected of even possibly smelling like it might lead toward the unthinkable is also interdicted, censored, de facto outlawed from polite public discourse.

Perhaps we could get even better results over there if we gave some of the drones to Pakistan. “Quizzing the muslim ladies” my foot. The fact that qwaal “sounds good” to you tells us that you were raised in that culture and have a sentimental, and therefore emotional, attachment to it. Judging purely by musical standards, the “music” of qwaal is simple minded and lacking entirely in harmonic structure and subtlety. The vocalizations are like those of children with no voice training, and that and the lack of musical harmony are not compensated by any amount of group swaying or elaborate ethnic clothing or props that may otherwise be employed to dazzle the listeners. Even Western pop singers (think Whitney Houston, or even Barbra Streisand) have better voices than these people (typified by the child-like voice of the ME’s superstar female vocalist Fairuz apparently so beloved by one of our occasional posters here called fairuzfan).

So tell us, barcode, do you think the student who was beaten to death in this story was singing or playing qwaal music (the story doesn’t say), or was it perhaps because he was playing some kind of “Western” (and therefore by implication haram) music?

  54. says

    Very astute observations, ElizaDoolittle.

However, what makes it even worse than what you describe is that it can’t be denied that there are many Muslims who are into music and many of those are also musicians. What do we do with this ostensible sociocultural fact? Well, the PC MC response is, as you say, to point to them with triumph as proof of the cogency of the PC MC template, by which a putative majority of harmless Muslims are forever contrasted with the TMOETTROP (the Tiny Minority of Extremists Twisting the Religion of Peace).

The more intelligent response would be primarily to dismiss these Musical Muslims as no less dangerous, as far as we can ever know, than the so-called Extremists.

Beyond that, as we keep up our guard, we may speculate about the psychology of some of those Musical Muslim: Are some of them sincerely ignorant of what their own Islam teaches about Music? Are some of them aware, but defiant of their own Islam? If so, are they equally defiant of other aspects of Islam, like Jihad, Shariah, etc? Are some of them confused, almost schizophrenic, and if pressed would simultaneously defend Music and get hostile at a questioner who tried to probe the Islamic prohibition on Music? Might any number of them slowly begin to realize that what they are doing is wrong, and would thus begin to cool down their enthusiasm for Music as they become more and more drawn to the siren song of the muezzin calling them back to the Islam they have been neglecting? And finally, as Eliza suggests, are some of them actually cleverly using Music as Stealth Dawa?

Unfortunately, since we cannot answer any of these questions definitively, we cannot trust the ostensible and diverse population of Musical Muslims. For our own protection, we must assume they are no less dangerous than the so-called Extremists.

P.S.: There is no logical, nor evidentiary, reason why this rule should not apply to all Muslims. On the other side, there is massive evidence of horribly deadly consequences from Muslim plots to attack us using any deadly means they can get their hands on, should we adopt an artificial construct by which innumerable Muslims are not treated as hostile and thus are allowed to infiltrate.

  55. says

Hugh presents the evidence, which is copious and undeniable, about the prohibition of music in Islam.

An additional wrinkle to this which I have noticed: when one encounters a seemingly relaxed Muslim who seems open to secularization and even Westernization, and the subject of music and Islam comes up, there are usually three typical responses from the Muslim:

Response 1: Denial of the prohibition of music in Islam.

(And we all know how such denial devolves if we proceed to Step 2 and present the evidence Hugh has marshalled: “Those hadiths are not authentic. Show me a Koran verse. Do you know Arabic? How many Muslims do you know personally? Have you ever travelled to a Muslim country?” Etc. And then begins that most unmusical tap-dance of extracting teeth from a Muslim who 10 minutes before seemed nice, friendly and breezy, but who is becoming increasingly irascible, brimming with hostility. More likely than not, the Muslim will just abruptly end the discussion and accuse the interlocutor of “hate”.)

Response 2: Flimsy attempts at counter-argument.

(The Muslim will attempt to “prove” that in fact Islam does not prohibit music, and will adduce perhaps counter-hadiths, or more likely just obscure fatwas from clerics who turn out to be Ahmadiyyas and not even Sunnis or Shia; or will try to argue from a “Koran-only” stance, hoping his Infidel interlocutor is ignorant of the fact that Islam is massively not Koran-only, but depends centrally upon the Sunnah (for Sunnis, who constitute 85% of the world’s Muslims) or upon the equivalent of the Sunnah in Shia Islam; etc.)

Response 3: This is where it gets interesting. Response 3 will not occur unless the Infidel is clever, knowledgeable and presses a specific line of questioning — to wit, the line of questioning that tries to palpate a distinction between “healthy music” (i.e., music conducive to piety and social order) and “unhealthy music” (i.e., music that will lead the soul astray from the Deen and thus threatens social harmony based upon the Deen). Once this distinction is clearly on the table, I guarantee that even the most secular-seeming, ostensibly Westernized Muslim will suddenly agree that only “healthy music” is good for society.

The question then becomes, should “healthy music” be enforced through a society’s laws? Press the friendly Westernized Muslim on this, and you will find that in the end, he will have to admit that society cannot tolerate “unhealthy musicians” willy-nilly playing in the parks, on the street corners, in our universities where males and females might mingle and even dance, perhaps anywhere where a pious public might hear and become disturbed; etc.

And don’t forget to ask that friendly Westernized Muslim if he approves of the social freedom for males and females to dance together in public, and would he support laws that would punish those who try to obstruct this freedom? After much hemming and hawing from the Muslim, you might get lucky and find the Extremist beneath the surface you have scratched.

These aspects of qwaal are precisely why it is permitted in Islam. I.e., any music that strays too far from a rudimentary simplicity threatens to seduce the listener and lead his heart astray from the rigors of the Deen, and this in turn, if left unpunished, will threaten to infect society with Fitna. This attitude is Fanatical Puritanism + Savagery: the worst of both worlds.

To me it is as clear, “As an unmuddied lake, Fred. As clear as an azure sky of deepest summer”.
Yes…I viddy him for what he is.

    No islam…Know Peace.
    Know islam…throw up.

Yesterday I could not have answered this question; but today after talking to the ladies they educated me on the subject. I have learned more from them then you.

You are such an ignoramus. You seek to learn about islam. Those of us that gather here are here to expose islam for what it is and to warn others of the dangers of islam. You calim to be here to learn yet all you do is argue. If you seek to be told lies then continue asking your tell staff about islam…go to a mosque.
Do not come here and claim to want to learn and then argue that islam is a religion of peace. We know better. If you come here to learn then learn. If you come here to teach, admit it.
In the meantime you may ask the members of the cult of the mo people if they are evil or not to your hearts content. (That is just so incredibly stupid I can’t believe that you brag about it). Clearly you trust them over all others…so why do you bother to come here to learn? sigh….rinse, repeat…you don’t.

You are clearly not here to learn, so drop the pretense already. Grow a pair… or remain a punk.

I have more respect for any of the other muslim posters than I do you. At least they have the courage to admit to what they are.

    islam is a lie and
    Truth is killing it.

No, we’re not having a ‘food fight’.

We’re just doing the equivalent of casting the Patronus charm to drive away dementors (by ‘dementors’, on this occasion, I mean not the Mohammedtrolls but rather the mental state that is sometimes induced if one spends too much time contemplating the horrors of dar al Islam).

  65. says

Compare to that, the stereotype of the Christian heaven: people in white robes *playing golden harps and singing*.

Not only that, one of the major Protestant theologians of the 20th century, Karl Barth, as intranigently religious and conservatively tight-ass as they come, wrote that as far as he was concerned, in Heaven the angels listen to Mozart. That in a nutshell illuminates the astronomic superiority of Christianity to Islam.

  66. says

About Quran 4;34, beating women “lightly”. It has been shown already that that word “lightly” wasn’t there in the original Arabic Quran. That this word is shown in brackets, because it is inserted by the Saudi sponsored translator. The evidence for this is shown on Faith Freedom International under the section “Women in Islam”.

First Saudi’s mistranslate the Quran, then other Muslims or Islam-apologists use this mistranslation to make Islam look less bad. But there are now plenty ex-Muslim and Islam-experts on our side also.

Granted, there are Western bastards who beat women mercilessly also, but in Western law women have equal rights and are entitled to the best possible protection against beating.

  67. says

“In fact disagreeable though it is at least the Koran asks men (or other women) to beat the women lightly.”

Beat them lightly? How about not AT ALL! You are effing evil for even suggesting that it’s OK to beat a woman even “lightly”. Hey it’s time to ditch the kooran, barcode. Don’t muslims have any common sense? Guess not!

  68. says

More from the odious “Mr Barcode”:

What this is does demonstrate though is that violence to women does not take place in Islam only. I do not condone ANY violence against women – not even against the gobby ones.
    ……………..

No one ever claimed that violence against women is confined to the Muslim world. However, virtually all Westerners despise wife beaters. The laws in the West make it very clear that such behavior is not condoned in any manner.

Not so in Dar-al-Islam, where laws against wife-beating, child abuse and “honor killing” have been blocked over and over on the grounds that protecting women against such savagery is *un-Islamic*. After all, the “Prophet” Muhammed beat his child bride Aisha”what could be more “Islamic” than that?

Also, notice “Mr Barcode’s” reference”he has made it before”to “gobby” women. “Gobby” is a British slang term for those who won’t shut up”in other words, women who are not *submissive enough*.

    more:

In fact disagreeable though it is at least the Koran asks men (or other women) to beat the women lightly.

Please do not get wound up, but the point here is important. LIght beatings are in stark contrast to the beatings that your poor sister took.
    ……………..

As has been pointed out many times, the “light” was added in English translations”it does not exist in the original Arabic.

But the central point here”which “Mr Barcode” seems fine with-is that in Islam men control women. That some stop short of disfiguring or killing women is pretty cold comfort.

I don’t suppose women are allowed to “lightly” beat their husbands? No, I didn’t think so. I don’t suppose the idea that beating one’s spouse is grotesque to begin with is seriously entertained?

Of course not. The concept of treating women with mutual respect is entirely alien to the tenets of Islam.
