March 9 (Bloomberg) -- A Pennsylvania woman who used the alias Jihad Jane plotted to recruit jihadist fighters and conspired to commit murders overseas, according to an indictment unsealed in Philadelphia.Colleen LaRose, also known as Fatima LaRose, of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, was charged with one count of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, one count of conspiracy to kill in a foreign country, one count of making false statements and one count of attempted identity theft, U.S. Attorney Michael Levy in Philadelphia said today in an e-mailed statement.
The case "demonstrates that terrorists are looking for Americans to join them in their cause, and it shatters any lingering thought that we can spot a terrorist based on appearance," Levy said.
LaRose and five unindicted co-conspirators located in South Asia, eastern and western Europe and the U.S. allegedly recruited men and women on the Internet who had the ability to travel to and around Europe. LaRose and the co-conspirators allegedly discussed plans including martyring themselves, soliciting funds for terrorists and avoiding travel restrictions to wage a "violent Jihad," according to the statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office....

The ever-lengthening list of converts to Islam - in the UK, in Russia, in Australia, in Ireland, in the USA, in Canada, and on, and on, and on - who are subsequently caught either carrying out, or plotting to carry out, murderous assaults upon their country of origin or upon some other non-Muslim land, and upon non-Muslims in their (the convert's) country of origin, or elsewhere.

Note the not-so-subtle digs at the idea that profiling might be useful, and at the idea that profiling is only based on appearance.
One argument against profiling is that it would not be 100% effective, and therefore it's useless. But I don't think anyone has ever argued that profiling should be the only method used to detect terrorists. It's always been proposed as one more tool in a larger toolkit.
Also, every profiling proposal I've ever heard of uses appearance as only one element, and not the major element, of the profiling. Suspicious behavior is a much more important part.
Why, tanstaafl, are you suggesting -- oh, please, please say it isn't so -- we adopt intelligent, effective PROFILING methods to intercept jihadis? Horrors! Why, doncha know, that might lead to dee-scrim-in-nation. It also might save our lives, but surely you would not violate -- VIOLATE, I say -- the tender feelings of Muslim killers for such a paltry motive.

This doesn't surprise me in the least. If an avowedly atheistical ideology such as Soviet Communism can compel Americans( Aldrich Ames, the Rosenbergs, Robert Hansen) to spy for them, then why not fundamentalist Islam?
