Thailand: Jihadists shoot, kill father and 7-year-old daughter

The intrepid mujahedin, targeting a father and his daughter riding a motorbike home. "Father and daughter shot dead, bomb wounds 5 in Thai south," from ChannelNewsAsia, March 3 (thanks to Twostellas):

NARATHIWAT, Thailand: Suspected Islamic militants shot dead a father and his young daughter in Thailand's troubled south, while a roadside bomb wounded five soldiers, police said Wednesday.
The casualties were the latest in a six-year separatist insurgency in the Muslim-majority southern provinces bordering Malaysia that has left more than 4,000 people dead and thousands more wounded.
Gunmen opened fire on the Muslim man and his three daughters as they rode a motorbike home from a religious school in Pattani province Tuesday, killing the 44-year-old man and his seven-year-old daughter, police said.
Early Wednesday a 15 kilogramme bomb hidden in a gas canister in neighbouring Narathiwat province wounded five rangers as they drove in a pick-up truck to meet community leaders, they added.
The shadowy militant groups in Thailand's south never publicly state their goals but have targeted Buddhists and Muslims, civilians and security forces alike in their campaign against central government control....

"have targeted Buddhists and Muslims" -- from the article above

This phrase in the article misleads, possibly unintentionally. The Muslims in the south don't target "Buddhists and Muslims." They target Buddhists, and also those Muslims whom, they believe, are insufficiently Muslim and and therefore insufficiently hostile to non-Muslims, including the Thai authorities.

Hugh - you beat me to it - I homed in on the same phrase, with a different take. The report would have us believe that it's all amorphous, undirected, and indiscriminate as to who is victimized.

I am reminded of this characterization of the Holocaust (based on the fact that a Jew killed a German diplomat and the Warsaw ghetto uprising cost some Wehrmacht lives):

"The Third Reich - some Jews killed some Germans, and the Germans killed some Jews. All very unfortunate."

Yup - it was all even-Stevens....

Thailand's south is "troubled." Most of the time it's "restive," but today it's "troubled." Although if you just said the Muslim south, we have a much better idea of the problem.

You forgot 'volatile' and 'turbulent' - other adjectives that the world media seems to use rather a lot when describing heavily-Muslim-inhabited districts, provinces or countries.

Translation = "jihad-wracked".

Jihad against *little 7-year-old girls*. God, I hate Islam...
