Fjordman: The European Union and "Beautiful" Minarets

The European Union and "Beautiful" Minarets
by Fjordman

Inspired by Bat Ye'or's groundbreaking work Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis, I wrote my own book Defeating Eurabia in 2008. My conclusion back then, which still stands today, was that the European Union constitutes a threat to the entire European continent and needs to be dismantled:

"The EU has accepted that the Union should be enlarged to include the Muslim Middle East and North Africa. The EU has accepted that tens of millions of immigrants from predominantly Muslim countries in northern Africa should be allowed to settle in Europe in the years ahead. This is supposedly 'good for the economy.' It is planning to implement sharia laws for the millions of Muslims it is inviting to settle in Europe. It has passed stronger anti-racism laws while making it clear that 'Islamophobia' constitutes a form of racism, and is cooperating with Islamic countries on rewriting school textbooks to provide a 'positive' image of Islam to European children. Finally, the EU is developing an Arrest Warrant which stipulates that those charged with serious crimes, for instance racism, can be arrested without undue interference of the nation state they happen to live in. In essence, the EU is formally surrendering an entire continent to Islam while destroying established national cultures, and is prepared to harass those who disagree with this policy. This constitutes the greatest organized betrayal in Western history, yet is hailed as a victory for 'tolerance.'"

Those who still believe that Eurabia is a merely "conspiracy theory" should take a closer look at how European authorities handled the Swiss ban on the building of minarets, which constitute a visible symbol of Islamic supremacy. For example, the Ottoman Turks used the minaret as one of the elements to visually appropriate conquered Byzantine churches and convert them to mosques. The ancient Bulgarian town of Nessebar was a part of the First and Second Bulgarian Empires from the seventh to the fourteenth century AD and saw the creation of numerous medieval churches. Yet like the rest of the Balkans it experienced centuries of steep cultural and economic decline following the Turkish Muslim conquests.

This is described in The Byzantine Legacy in Eastern Europe, edited by Lowell Clucas. Although many churches were destroyed or converted into mosques during the conquests, some survived. Under favorable conditions, old churches could be restored or even a few new ones built, although this goes against sharia. However, (page 61), "The physical smallness of these churches is a correct gauge of the general status enjoyed by Christianity within the Ottoman Empire. It is also a correct gauge of the economic power of its patrons: a modest Christian middle class and generally small monastic communities." The official prohibition of the use of bells was strictly enforced in all but the most peripheral areas under Ottoman rule as the Turks loathed the sound of bells. The Byzantine Legacy in Eastern Europe, page 68:

"According to other, popular Islamic beliefs, bells were thought to attract evil spirits, or to keep angels away. Not only was there a strict policy forbidding their use, but there were evidently continuous efforts at complete eradication of bells. The few surviving examples of medieval bells have been preserved, it would seem, because they were buried to protect them from the Turkish purges. The general Turkish attitude toward bells, and the resulting policy prohibiting their use, left an imprint on Orthodox church architecture. Turkish wrath was directed not solely against bells, but also against architectural features associated with them - belfries. Their highly visible presence on a city's skyline must have been perceived by the Moslems as an unwanted competition with their minarets. Dismantling of belfries, therefore, became a norm. Archaeological work on churches throughout the territory once held by the Byzantine empire suggests that many more once had belfries than is now apparent. Indeed, the few preserved examples of belfries, particularly among urban churches, did survive only because they were adapted for minarets by the Turks."

Following the liberation of the Balkan states from Turkish rule, much larger churches and cathedrals were built in southeastern Europe, from Skopje to Sofia. In Athens, the capital of liberated Greece, a new Orthodox Cathedral was built between 1842 and 1862, using marble from 72 demolished churches. Inside are colorful Byzantine-style frescoes and the tombs of two saints killed by the Turks: Saint Philothei (1522-1589) is honored for ransoming Greek women who had been enslaved in Turkish harems. Gregory V, Patriarch of Constantinople, was hanged and thrown into the Bosphorus in 1821 during the Greek uprising.

The skyline of Bulgaria's capital city Sofia is dominated by the magnificent Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world whose construction began in 1882 and was designed by the Russian architect Alexander Pomerantsev (1849-1918). Its 45 meters gold-plated dome is only slightly smaller than that of the famous Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. St. Mark's Church in the center of Belgrade, Serbia, was built in the 1930s and is among the tallest Orthodox churches in the Balkans.

The old regulations used in the Balkans to subdue non-Muslims are now being exported to Western Europe, for instance in Britain in 2010, because of Muslim immigration. According to Islamic law, dhimmis - primarily Jews and Christians under the "protection" of the Islamic state - are forbidden to openly display wine or pork, to ring church bells or display crosses, recite the Torah or Gospels aloud or to make public display of their funerals and feast days because this offends Muslims living in the area. As Robert Spencer writes in Stealth Jihad:

"On October 13, 1999, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Izmir, Turkey, Giuseppe Germano Bernardini, warned the Synod of European Bishops about a 'clear program' among Muslims for the 're-conquest' of Europe. 'During an official meeting on Islamic-Christian dialogue,' he wrote, 'an authoritative Muslim person, speaking to the Christians participating, at one point said very calmly and assuredly: 'Thanks to your democratic laws we will invade you; thanks to our religious laws we will dominate you.' This domination, he continued, has already begun - 'with the 'petro-dollars,' used not to create work in the poor North African or Middle Eastern countries, but to build mosques and cultural centers in Christian countries with Islamic immigration, including Rome, the center of Christianity. How can we ignore in all of this a clear program of expansion and re-conquest?' Bernardini also recorded one Muslim's piquant expression of Islamic supremacism: 'During another Islamic-Christian meeting, always organized by Christians, a Christian participant publicly asked the Muslims present why they did not organize at least once a meeting of this kind. The Muslim authority present answered the following words: 'Why should we? You have nothing to teach us and we have nothing to learn.'"

Spencer warns that "Through massive immigration and official dhimmitude from European leaders, Muslims are accomplishing today what they have tried but failed to do for over a millennium: conquer Europe."

They are actively aided in this undertaking by European authorities. The Council of Europe, in close cooperation with the EU, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the Arab League and other Islamic organizations, is working to combat "Islamophobia" in Europe by all means necessary. In February 2010, a few months after the referendum that banned minarets in Switzerland, COJEP International and EMISCO (European Muslim Initiative for Social Cohesion) with the support of the Council of Europe and the OIC launched a contest to select the most beautiful existing minaret in Europe. According to them, mosques have become a "permanent addition" to our urban landscapes that Westerners should get used to:

"It is however unfortunate, that lately some populist politicians and a section of media has made minarets an issue to curtail fundamental rights. This has resulted in attacks on ethnic and religious minorities and spreading of hate crimes against Muslim people in Europe. It is therefore important that the universal peaceful presence of Islam is visible and its followers are able to practice their religion openly as is the case with other religions. This photo contest is also intended to remove the misplaced fears and prejudices in European societies that Islam and Muslims undermine the Western values and cultures."

The winners will be presented at a press conference to be held at the European Parliament on the 20th of April 2010. An exhibition of the most beautiful pictures of minarets and mosques will be held at the Council of Europe later this year. As we have seen, a minaret is a symbol of Islamic supremacy and dominance over non-Muslims. The EU Parliament will thus hail the "most beautiful" symbol of the Islamic colonization of Europe and the subjugation of the native population of an entire continent to Islamic rule. There can be no better reminder of the fact that the European Union is not just an active collaborator in the destruction of European civilization, but in some ways arguably its main engine. The only long-term solution to this problem is to permanently end Muslim immigration to all Western nations, to abolish and dismantle organizations such as the EU and the CoE and to get rid of Multiculturalism.

Who would have thought that in the 21st century the civilized West would kneel to Islam?

A perfect example of how "progress" is not linear.

The Nazis and the Holocaust are also perfect examples of how progress isn't linear.

And I see many comparisons between the West submitting to barbaric hate-filled Jew-hating Islam, and the Nazis/Holocaust. Many comparisons. We're in for a rough ride in the next 20 years.

People, letting you know about a new book by Ibn Warraq - "Virgins? What Virgins?" ! Great title, isn't it? It's a compilation of essays on Islam. Check it out on amazon. I've already ordered 2 copies.

If this keeps happening the real europe will consist of the eastern european nations. while west europe becomes islamic hellholes. I hope that these countries will have an another iron curtain to keep out the islamofascists.

Athens, the capital of liberated Greece, a new Orthodox Cathedral was built between 1842 and 1862, using marble from 72 demolished churches.

The ahistoricity of modern Western man is perhaps best explained by electronic media.

*** 92:8 ***

Every month, hundreds of thousands of valuable TV and radio hours expended on opinion, gossip and electoral horse racing. But virtually none on critical knowledge in the form of acknowledged and undisputed facts of great relevance to the situation we're in today.

Why not just cut to the chase and have a photo contest of the "most beautiful" concentration and death camps while you're at it???

Yes, the deliberate Islamization of Europe by the European Union (E.U.), the Council of Europe, in alliance with the Organization of the Islamic Conference (O.I.C.) is well under way, if little discussed in the MSM.

Turkey, despite its non-E.U. status, has been granted considerable political lobbying powers inside the E.U.

Most E.U. people are opposed to the membership of Turkey (and of its 75 million Muslims), but the political lobbying continues in support of Turkey from Obama, the E.U., and the O.I.C.

And, as Fjordman points out, the E.U. organizations are already preparing the political groundwork for the future inclusion of the North African Islamic countries in a further enlarged and Islamized Europe.

Fjordman is good, but he's dead wrong on multiculturalism. He says "get rid of it." But a large part of the reason to oppose Islam is precisely that it's a monoculture. We should not aim to get rid of multiculturalism, but only to discard the extreme and suicidal side of multiculturalism that yields to a totalitarian monoculture like Islam. If Fjordman wants to get rid of multiculturalism, he should be ushering more and more Muslims into Europe. That would do the trick.

One of the best essays on 'Multiculturalism' is, I think:

"Multiculturalism - Merits and debits" (by Paul Weston)

http://paulweston101.blogspot.com/2007/04/multiculturalism-merits-debits.html

Or 'beautiful' photos of Darfur rape and murders, or Rwanda genocide, or Nigerian pastoralists jihad against the Christians? Too powerful to cope with in PC MC media? So are the 'beautiful' symbols of Islamic conquests of Europe, their mosques and minarets, which should all be banned on the grounds of Jihad.

BTW, the Christian tradition is that bells and incense chase the devil away. The Islamics got that wrong too, ignorant backwards lot.

Under the banner of defending human rights, the Europeans will sacrifice their own human rights.

As for opening up the Eurabian Union to those patches of desert owned by Qaddafi, Bouteflika and Mubarak, among other such open sewers, let's not forget that even that über-dhimmi and Chamberlainesque British Foreign Secretary, David Dhimmiliband, has proposed exactly that:

He (Dhimmiliband) outlined four principles for the "next generation" of Europe, for it to remain open to "trade, ideas and investment", to develop shared institutions to overcome religious and cultural divides, to prevent conflict by championing international law and human rights in and outside Europe, and to become a "low carbon power".

He said a successful EU must be prepared to "deploy soft and hard power to promote democracy and tackle conflict beyond its borders".

He said the goal "must be a multilateral free-trade zone around our periphery".

This would be a "version of the European Free Trade Association that could gradually bring the countries of the Mahgreb, the Middle East and Eastern Europe in line with the single market, not as an alternative to membership, but potentially as a step towards it".

The real problem doesn't lie with the people of Europe , the real problem is with the business interests. Just as in most democratic Western countries powerful interests are at work which undermine the democratic workings.
It's also quite easy to ignore and isolate the political movements trying to change these things.
Business is quite happy with the situation as it is, they have a unending stream of poor immigrant workers who will slave away for little wages and elaborate social security schemes are undermined by the unending stream of third world populations.
As is the case with the PVV in the Netherlands despite becoming second in both Almere and The Hague city council elections they were prevented from taking part in governing the city.
Without popular organizations demanding that changes are made and who put pressure on the elites from below to compromise nothing will change.
And the elites are quite open about there desire to see the European union expand to include for example Turkey.
As always for business interests human rghts, democracy have little to no meaning and are more often seen as annoying barriers to profit.

What would be effective for example is if in both Almere and The Hague PVV voters would cripple the cities ability to function by going on mass strikes, blocking roads and public transport all kinds of activism to put some sense into the elites.
As long as the people think change will come by simply pushing a button every four years then they can easily be ignored and isolated as we are seeing now.
Likewise one sees this in Flanders with the Vlaams Belang party.
It's very rare to see significant change from simply voting in elections.
The only real success has been the Swiss ban on minarets but they have a much stronger democratic tradition and system then most of Europe. Also everyone has a gun in there closet in Switserland.

We already know that muslims object to church bells. Now they object to anything that may sound like a church bell.

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/LDE63E0IQ.htm
"MOGADISHU, April 15 (Reuters) - Somalia's al Shabaab militants have ordered schools in Jowhar town to stop using bells to signal the end of classes because they sound like those of Christian churches, teachers said on Thursday.

A local headmaster confirmed the report and added that al Shabaab had informed his school that it would begin explaining to students the significance of Islamic Jihad."

minarets according to Mohammed are UNISLAMIC! who build them are doing FITNA

, Muhammad founded a creed, perfect for the underdeveloped desert Arab Bedouins. He opposed creating buildings on a grand scale, saying that "Truly the most unprofitable thing that eats the wealth of a believer is building" and that "Every expense of the believer will be rewarded except the expense of the building".

And, despite founding a powerful Islamic state, poised to dominate the world in the next two decades, the two early mosques founded by Muhammad, one in Koba and the Prophet's mosques in Medina, were simple structures until his death. Rain leaked through the roof of his ramshackle mosque in Medina. And when a companion asked if it should be repaired, Muhammad answered: "No, a mosque should be simple and modest, a booth, like the booth of Moses."

Obviously, such structures, as approved by the prophet as mosques, could not even hold minarets on their tops. The idea of minarets never crossed Muhammad's mind. And for eight decades after Muhammad's death, minarets were not a part of mosques.

Minarets became a part of mosques in the period of the "Godless" Umayyad dynasty that came to power by ousting the Prophet's grandson Hasan (661 CE), and later exterminating the Prophet's offspring, including his other grandson Husayn, a pretender to the caliphate (Battle of Karbala, 680 CE). The Godless Umayyads first introduced the tradition of building gorgeous architectural and building structures, including elegant mosques, defying prior tradition and pious Islamic injunctions against it.

not that it will make any difference about dhimmification of EU and UK...Islam makes it up as it goes along. that's what Mo did -A pox be Upon Him

boom goes London then Paree...lots of Islam for you and me

Okay. So they're holding a contest to "select the most beautiful existing minaret in Europe."
And - "The winners will be presented at a press conference to be held at the European Parliament on the 20th of April 2010. An exhibition of the most beautiful pictures of minarets and mosques will be held at the Council of Europe later this year."

Well: this requires a response. Pax Europa should coordinate a rival Event. Bigger and better. To be organised and publicised in connection with all resistance groups in Europe, e.g. SIOE (Europe), SIOE (England), EDL, March for England, Party for Freedom, Danish People's Party, and so on.

Namely, a competition to find the best representations of the most beautiful *non-Islamic* places of worship in Europe. All of Europe, Central Europe and the Balkans and Southern Europe as well as North-West and Central Europe; and extend the invitation to non-Muslims from the Russian Federation.

Images can be produced by any medium - photograph, visual recording, painting, drawing, a powerpoint/ film/ son et lumiere installation, model-making, mosaic, you-name-it. Open it to amateurs as well as professional artists.

Divide it into categories: Christian place of worship (subcategories = small village church, large parish church, Cathedral); Jewish place of worship; Eastern/ Asian Religions - Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist and Taoist meeting places or shrines which have been built in Europe and are deemed by the local non-Muslims, whether members of that particular community or not, to be a positive addition to the landscape; and Most Beautiful Indigenous European Pre-Christian Site - thus allowing for some of the more beautiful standing stones and stone circles to be represented.

Not sure what should be offered as a prize to the winners in each category.

Perhaps signed copies of the book Fjordman mentions - 'The Byzantine Legacy in Eastern Europe', together with Oleg Grabar's classic book on Islamic architecture which discusses the ways in which the changes Muslims made to the forms that they plagiarised from others, can be interpreted primarily as 1. displays of power and 2. reflections of the military ethos - buildings are constructed with a view to usefulness in warfare. And maybe, by way of warning what Muslims get up to as soon as they have the power, Sita Ram Goel's book that lists all the Hindu shrines and temple complexes that Muslims are known to have destroyed in India. Mr Fitzgerald might have some better ideas, but these are what occur to me.

I suggest that all the artworks that make it through to the finals should be displayed in a suitable location. In the Christian section, the sound of church-bells, recorded from different churches and cathedrals all over Europe and the Russian Federation, would be tastefully broadcast at intervals over a sound system. The Jewish and East Asian communities would produce suitable muzak for *their* wings of the exhibition.

Live performances of sacred music by Christians, Jews, and members of the other non-Islamic faiths represented in the exhibition, could take place at the opening and closing of the exhibition, and at performance spaces set aside within the exhibition area.

Another category - Best imaginative *recreation* of a church or synagogue known to have been destroyed or appropriated by Muslims - in the Balkans and elsewhere, both in recent years and in previous centuries. Imagine aspiring artists competing to produce a re-imagining, say via CGI/ animation, of the Hagia Sophia *as a church*, cleansed from all signs and symbols of Islam, with its icons restored, re-furnished, its bells ringing, candles everywhere, and filled with the Paschal Liturgy.

And at the same time, encourage Jewish artists to imagine (using any medium) what the Temple Mount would look like sans Al Aqsa, sans the Dome of the Rock, completely freed from everything the Muslims have put there, clean and clear and open to the sky. Same deal: best representation wins a prize.

In conjunction with all this, one could *also* award a Booby Prize. *That* would go to - *the UGLIEST Mosque in Europe*.

This could be subdivided into the following categories - Physically Ugliest Mosque in Europe; Most In-Your-Face, Aggressively or Insensitively Placed Mosque in Europe; Mosque Least Wanted by the Local Non-Muslims; Most Dangerous Mosque (i.e. Mosques Most Often Associated with Proven Jihad Plots and/ or Criminal Activity); Mosque That Looks Most Like a Military Bunker/ Fortress.

Another category - There Goes the Neighbourhood - for depictions, by non-Muslim artists, of those mosques in Europe that have been created out of pre-existing non-Muslim buildings, whether places of worship or other, or that have been built on top of of pre-existing non-Islamic places of worship that Muslims got hold of and then demolished. The idea would be to have an evocative photo or painting, or model, etc., of what was there *first*, and then a corresponding representation of the mosque that has displaced it. Award prizes for the artistically best and most eloquent entrants.

And just to remind us of what mosques are all about, Seth Frantzman's excellent article that appeared in The Jerusalem Post, not long ago:

"More than a coincidence: Minarets, geography and power"
By SETH J. FRANTZMAN

From that article - "A survey of historical placement of mosques in important cities and newly conquered Muslim lands, as well as a survey of the placement of mosques in diverse neighborhoods, shows that *their placement is anything but random and that strikingly often they are built next to the houses of prayer or the neighborhoods of non-Muslims* {my emphasis - dda; and it should be noted that that 'next to' is often 'aggressively close to', 'right up against' or 'menacingly looming over'}.

This article, too, by an apostate, is of interest: 'Inside the Forbidden Fortress'.

http://pedestrianinfidel.blogspot.com/2006/02/inside-forbidden-fortress.html

Muslims *hate* and silence church bells and replace their music with the hideous screeching of the muezzin.

A story about mosque loudspeakers being used to harass the non-Muslims, in *Israel* (and as one person remarked in the talkbacks, if *Israelis* are complaining about the level of noise issuing from the mosques, it really *must* be bad...).

'Early morning Muslim prayer call is a rude awakening for many'.

'According to them, mosques have become a "permanent addition" to our urban landscapes that Westerners should get used to'

Strolling through the ancient streets of a European city, admiring the architecture, some dating from the Middle Ages, some even older, then turning a corner, and being confronted by a completely alien structure that is simply out of place, both architecturally and culturally...

This is a shockingly nasty experience, and definitely not something I am going to get used to. Nor will I get used to seeing a person in Arabic robes stalking arrogantly through European streets, followed by one or more masked slaves.

The Mohammedan culture is simply not compatible with Western civilisation, and the sooner this is widely realised the sooner we can stop this invasion, and start reversing it.

Aardvark - nice turn of phrase there to describe the Muslim women in burqa or chador and niqab who scuttle in the wake of their Lord and Master - 'masked slaves'.

We could modify that phrase to cover the other manifestations of the Muslim female slave rag. How about referring to Muslim women in the 'headscarf' hijab (the wimple-type covers-all-the-hair-ears-and-neck version), say, as 'hooded slaves'?

After all, it was Churchill who observed, re. Islam, that:

"The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. "

(from the original unbowdlerised 1899 edition of his book 'The River War', Vol II).

Proud Kafir,

That's incredible. I must admit I didn't read "Eurabia" and until now I really thought it was a conspiracy theory.

Milliband talked also about expanding European military involvement around the world.

Yet he said the EU won't be another superpower. That's hardly credible.

I don't think it's really a matter of leftist delusional idealism, but rather of European ambition to indeed become a superpower and compete with the US. The lefties are just useful idiots both in the hands of European blinding ambition and expansionism and Islamic ambition and expansionism.

Milliband: "As a club that countries want to join, it can persuade countries to play by the rules, and set global standards."

Yes, either that or Europe will be persuaded to play by the Islamic rules and let Islam set the global standards. Good luck with that...

An excellent essay, Fjordman. Very informative.

With European nations now turning to the right and becoming more nationalist (Hungary being the first), perhaps there's hope yet that the tide can be reversed.

Just one question on the advised dissolution of the EU- what would take its place?

The EU has been an unmitigated disaster to such a depth that what will replace it is not even a relevant question.

Just one question on the advised dissolution of the EU- what would take its place?

Terry

Why should anything take its place? The EU has grown into a behemoth, undemocratic, unrepresentative oligarchy run by elitist social engineers who despise Western Civilization. They're conducting a reckless, insane experiment and the people of Europe are the guinea pigs. They are in the process of destroying the continent of Europe and nobody is even trying to stop them. Like Obama hates America, they hate themselves and their heritage. What better way to obliterate it all than by importing the excess population of the islamic world? Who authorized them to give Europe to the muslims? What army will fight the inevitable war between the muslim invaders and the native Europeans? I hope the wise and enlightened E.U. elites realize that the muslims plan to be in charge once the invasion is completed.
They don't give a damn about international law; sharia is all they understand.

Like the despicable U.N., the E.U. has grown into a deadly monster. It was created to stop wars between European nations, not to turn Europe into a communist dictatorship or an islamic state. Why did we keep our forces in Europe after WWII to protect it from the spread of communism? It looks like they want communism or sharia; they obviously don't want freedom.

Fordman - always right on, fearless? Except for one thing. Why all this hand wringing when all we really have to do to rid ourselves of these savages is to point out that their perfect and divine Bible, the Koran, clearly advocates cold blooded murder and places the ordinary reader or hearer of these instruction to murder in an authoritative position to be able to personally murder innocent people and find favor with God for doing it. But, if we did that they would murder us wouldn't they? So, we don't dare say the truth and so we must die - but not for a few years yet.

"Beautiful" Minarets...
Fool doan know an enemy outpost when he sees one.

Mosque Blight
In Europe, having a mosque near you is about the worst form of property blight imaginable. Mosques act as the nuclei of Muslim ghettos around which ever-expanding no-go areas grow. Infidels are forced to sell their homes to Muslims at massively reduced prices by campaigns of intimidation including pedophile attacks, harassment, street jihad etc. Social housing tenants are displaced by Muslims who scream 'racism' if the local council doesn't preferentially house them near the mosque with their 'brothers and sisters in Islam'.

Epicenters of Evil
"Unlike churches, mosques are not places of spirituality, peace and sanctuary. They are quasi-military citadels and centres of subversion, intimidation and aggression:
