He said: "The public expects us to act firmly and swiftly if we see any social misbehaviour by women, and men, who defy our Islamic values. In some areas of north Tehran we can see many suntanned women and young girls who look like walking mannequins.
"We are not going to tolerate this situation and will first warn those found in this manner and then arrest and imprison them."...
The announcement came shortly after Ayatollah Kazim Sadighi, a leading cleric, warned that women who dressed immodestly disturbed young men and the consequent agitation caused earthquakes.
Another preacher warned Tehran's citizens to flee before the inevitable punishment for flagrant behaviour was visited on the city.
"Go on the streets and repent for your sins," Ayatollah Aziz Khoshvaqt, one of the country's highest clerics, told worshippers during a recent sermon in northern Tehran. "A holy torment is upon us. Leave town."

Can anyone really justify islam being designated as a religion with such absurd and harmful beliefs? How long must we "respect" (as Obama says) people who have no respect for the lives and well being of others, including their own women?
We in the West treat our PETS better and more lovingly than islamic societies treat their wives and daughters.
At what point does a religion become a cult? How many of these cult characterizations apply to Islam? All of them:

7) The group has a polarized "We" versus "Them" mentality that causes conflict with the wider society.
8) The group's leader is not accountable to any authorities (as are, for example, military commanders and ministers, priests, monks, and rabbis of mainstream denominations).
9) The group teaches or implies that its "superior" ends justify means that members would have considered unethical before joining the group (for example: collecting money for bogus charities).
10) The group's leadership induces guilt feelings in members in order to control them.
11) Members' subservience to the group causes them to give up previous personal goals and interests while devoting inordinate amounts of time to the groups."
12) Members are encouraged or required to live and/or socialize only with other group members.

Somehow, I can envision the daughters and subsequently often wives, of powerful government, Revolutionary guard-people, successful businessmen, who very probably did receive a good education, becoming very "irritated" about the enforcement of Islamic virtues and the "prohibition of vices" by the vice&virtue-police on Iranian women. But I don't know what they will want to do about it. Being educated, it would mean that they also can think a little, and maybe in a moral, woman-solidarity-way too. But being privileged and rich may prevent them from protesting.

So, according to Islam, women are even solely responsible for earthquakes? Under Islam, a woman is even responsible for being raped and can be put to death for it. A man, however, would not be held responsible for being mugged or the victim of another violent crime. But, women are held to be responsible for even tempting men by virtue of their being women, that's Mohamed's rewrite of the story of Adam and Eve in the Quran (The original story says that Eve was made from Adam's SIDE not his FOOT). Such inequality is selfish, unreasonable, absurd, and male-chauvinistic, to say the least.
