Malawi: Muslims angered by move to ban polygamy

Particularly noteworthy in this story is the claim that banning polygamy will force women into prostitution because they can't find husbands. There are no other options for women to be considered, apparently. "Malawi move to ban polygamy angers Muslims," from BBC News, April 30:

Muslims in Malawi have been angered by government plans to ban polygamy.
A spokesman for the Muslim Association of Malawi told the BBC the proposed law would discriminate against the country's Muslim minority.
He said with about 6% more women than men in Malawi, if polygamy were banned, many women would be left without a husband and become prostitutes.
The gender minister said the ban was necessary to prevent women from being abused in polygamous relationships.
She said problems occurred because men could not give their full attention to more than one woman.
"When a man has two, three, four wives, they are not co-operative - one will be the loved one," said Gender Minister Patricia Kaliati.
It had not been a hasty decision and there had been wide consultation about the matter, she said.
But Imran Shareef Muhammed - secretary general of the Muslim Association of Malawi - disputed this.
"The minister is lying - she didn't consult the Muslim community," he told the BBC's Network Africa programme.
"We are totally rejecting it. There are also other ethnic groups [who practise polygamy] and they also totally reject this," he said.
"If these people go ahead banning polygamous marriages it means many women will go into prostitution.
"Every woman has the right to be under the shelter of a man."

Does she have the right to opt not to be?

He said under Sharia law, polygamy was optional.
"I have only one wife, my dear wife... but the moment they proceed with this, I will take a second wife," he said.
Should the ban come into affect [sic], those already in polygamous marriages would not be affected, but those who flout it could face imprisonment, the minister said.

The BBC writer means "flaunt," not "flout," right?

And why may I ask are the men afraid of prostitutes? Would they not be the procurers of this service? Hmm... Maybe the men should become the prostitutes and all these extra women they seem to have will no longer be an issue. Get ready, Muslimahs, it's girls night out!

"He said with about 6% more women than men in Malawi, if polygamy were banned, many women would be left without a husband and become prostitutes."

...or Lesbians. Now that would freak them out to no end.

I just don't get how a Muslim can have four wives and not be allowed to drink! Must be a how the Sunnah prepares him for a life of pergatory after the end of times.

Here are some relevant stats on Malawi.

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/mi.html

First thing that MUST be noted; it is not located in the heavily-Islamised northern half of Africa; it is well and truly a 'sub-saharan' African state.

Second, I doubt the Muslim's claim that there are 6 % more women than men in Malawi.

Here is a population breakdown. All figures probably approximate, given poverty and inefficient government.

0-14 years: 45.4% (male 3,419,711/female 3,404,726)

15-64 years: 51.9% (male 3,889,065/female 3,915,309)

65 years and over: 2.7% (male 172,679/female 227,267) (2009 est.)

And here are the estimated proportions of men to women:

at birth: 1.02 male(s)/female

under 15 years: 1 male(s)/female

15-64 years: 1.01 male(s)/female

65 years and over: 0.74 male(s)/female

total population: 1 male(s)/female (2009 est.)

That does not look to me like there are very many 'superfluous' females; it looks like just enough to go around if each male contents himself with one. There are only more females than males in the 65 and over age bracket.

And here, note well, is what the religious stats were, 12 years ago.

Christian 79.9%, Muslim 12.8%, other 3%, none 4.3% (1998 census)

The place is 80 + % NON-MUSLIM.

And the Muslims are making demands?

Squash 'em, Non-Muslims of Malawi. You're still in the majority, I'm sure. Say NO. Go right ahead and ban polygamy and if the Muslims break the law, punish them for it.

Nice DD.

There's also the missing discussion on the global policies that the west has towards immigration and emigration. Regardless of the population, nothing remains the same, and to target one gender when making law and policy, is misogynistic.

But Imran Shareef Muhammed - secretary general of the Muslim Association of Malawi - disputed this... "Every woman has the right to be under the shelter of a man."
When he said 'every woman', any bets on whether Imran was talking about every Mohammedan woman, or worse, every woman? In other words, make it okay for non-Muslims in Malawi to practice polygamy, thus squishing rights for all women?

DDA

Malawi seems more advanced in the granting of women's rights than, say, Malaysia. Anybody who ever thought that non-Muslim African countries were in the same league as the most forward looking Islamic countries would be wrong.

Also while the ratio is high for people above 65, if you look @ weighted averages, it evens out, since we're only talking 2.7% of the population here. There is no evidence that 26% of those women are unmarried - it may simply be that the male mortality is far higher than female mortality i.e. men there die earlier, which again is consitent w/ the rest of the world.

So it's not like there are a whole bunch of elderly women who'd 'benefit' if polygamy (actually polygyny) became legal.

"I have only one wife, my dear wife... but the moment they proceed with this, I will take a second wife," he said.

Aw, that must make his "dear wife" feel so special.

The latter part of his comment completely negates such a tender sentiment ...

"He said with about 6% more women than men in Malawi, if polygamy were banned, many women would be left without a husband and become prostitutes."

Imran Shareef Muhammed is a typical Muslim moron. Banning Polygamy precisely cuts this excess! The excess is the out come of reckless breeding due to polygamy and child marriages. Conversely, excess females is the basic need for the very practice of polygamy! It is a profitable business for many poor who charge a hefty sum to sell their pre-pubescent daughters to old or rich perverts.

Thus, as a composite measure, government must also curb child marriage and breeding like rabbits by Muslims. The ratio evens out within no time.

I always figured that when men in a country overdo polygamy, as in some Islamic societies, in past and present, where the rich get many and big harems, that ....

That would mean, that since a big part of the men "took" a high ratio of women per man, and of course the most beautiful at that, that the poor, or less attractive (in whatever way) of men should have a group of attractive women, who, to even things out, are "good for a high ratio of men to one woman", if only for fairness' sake.

In that way it would be polygamy that fosters prostitution. (But only of course after the 6 % surplus of women is used up).

And "Women having the right to be sheltered by men"? I am afraid there might be among Muslims some heavy age-discrimination going on. The young and beautiful ones might well be much better taken care of than the "elderly", who are much more in need of it, as shown by the statistics DDA provided.

Traeh: No, he meant "flout": to flout the law is to disobey it rather smugly. "Flaunt" is about showing off.

Ethically polygomi should only be accepted when both sexes are giving equal opportunities to accept or reject such a lifeform.

PJG,

I thought traeh's comment was rather clever, actually.

"I have only one wife, my dear wife... but the moment they proceed with this, I will take a second wife," he said.

Well, that's an interesting reason to marry. Is it me, or does this sound like the statement of a spoiled brat?

And such "men" want everyone else in the world to take them seriously.

For DDA/Infidel Pride,

Well it would be great to beleive that sub Saharan Africa has higher moral standards than Muslim nations, and while it is true when loking at the most pure ones-Saudi Arabia and Iran are widely accepted as the worst nations in the enitre world for women's rights, including even African ones-the truth is that when it comes to things like polygamy and spousal abuse lots of areas in Africa, even professed Christian ones, the views on polygamy are not as enlightened at all as the govt of Malawi is expressing itself to be. I worry that this could even be a move simply to make the nation have a better imnage so it could recieve foreign aid better. Unfortunately, it really does seem that some nations' very low view on women really is due to their prevailing culture's stance on it, even regardless of religion. Many people in Sub Saharab Africa and many Arabs and even some East Asains, all have views on the role of women that we would view as blatantly unacceptable, even when they have no relation to Islam at all. So while Shariah does cause huge numbers of the problems, the entire reason why so many places lag so far behind could be because of reasons even more uncomfortable.

Just had to comment. Could not resist.

"Every woman has the right to be under the shelter of a man."

Thank goodness for equality between the sexes in real countries, where human beings have the ability to think and reason.

Every women has the right to be under the shelter of a man - - - - what are these women - - - pets?

The extent of their chauvinism defies all logic. Their sense of perceived entitlement and superiority knows no limits. Truly sickening.

So...unmarried muslim women become prostitutes?
wow...that religion really sucks...

islam is a lie and
Truth is killing it.

Sometimes—as in Taliban-era Afghanistan—that is about their only option besides begging (both of which were illegal).

On the other hand, often unmarried women in Muslim countries are simply *regarded* as prostitutes, even if they are just factory workers or schoolteachers...

How islamic...

Hi, Gravenimage ...

Yeah, I try to imagine my husband making a cruel statement like that to me, and there would be hell to pay if he did, lol ...

Of course my husband would never say something so cruel, so I don't have to worry about such a remark; but it sure is sad that other women have to put up with such cruelty. Although I have come to learn that many islamic women EXPECT this kind of treatment. Crazy, eh?

Claiming to be oppressed, because they are not the favored class as promised by Shariah law and rationalizing jihad as defensive under Shariah law (a requirement: in defense of Islam, lands already conquered for Islam, a Muslim's "honor," etc.), Muslims refuse to follow the law of the land they are living in and demand that Shariah law be implemented, first for themselves and then for everyone in the area where they live. Historically, that has been the the way that a country starts on the way to being a Muslim country, after there are enough Muslims in an area to be a threat that is.

In the U.S. our Constitution and Bill of Rights are the supreme law of the land, and all other laws cannot contradict these. All our laws flow from this foundation (Codified Judea-Christian ethics by the way). We have many religious cults in our country, some who believe in polygamy. Yet, it is still a crime for them to be married to more than one person at a time. We do not allow those cults to have their own set of laws. Neither should we allow Muslims to have Shariah law govern them while they live in this country. I hope we nip that in the bud before it has a change to grow.

Widows are often forced into either prostitution or begging because of Shariah law not allowing them to go to school or leave the house without a male relative, and because Muslim men can "contract" with a woman to have her as a "temporary" wife for the night.

may wear in public places clothes that are aimed at hiding the face," says the text of a new law that is to be presented to parliament in July, according to a copy seen by the
