Nigeria: Senator who oversaw introduction of Sharia in his state takes child bride from Egypt

He’s 49, she’s 13. Of course, he’s just following Muhammad’s example, made sacrosanct per Qur’an 33:21. It is quite clear whose law Yerima is following, which sets up a conflict of interest with his role in the governance of Nigeria as a whole, as the country still has a non-Sharia constitution to uphold.

“Investigation into Nigerian senator’s ‘child bride’,” from BBC News, April 28:

Nigeria’s Senate has ordered an investigation into reports that one of its members has married a 13-year-old Egyptian girl.

Ahmad Sani Yerima, 49, is alleged to have married her at the national mosque in Abuja several weeks ago.

Senators called for the investigation after receiving a petition by protesting women’s groups, who believe Mr Sani has broken the law.

The senator has not spoken publicly about the reports of his marriage.

The BBC’s Caroline Duffield, in Lagos, says Nigeria’s human rights commission has already begun an investigation.

Mr Sani was the governor of Zamfara state, where he oversaw the introduction of Sharia law – for the first time in a northern state – in 1999.

Legal action

Our correspondent says reports of the marriage – appearing in newspapers – are creating a storm among human rights groups.

The female senators, lawyers and doctors who are protesting say that they fear for the child’s health.

Speaking of her health, as she came from Egypt, chances are all too high that she has also already undergone female genital mutilation.

“What we are concerned with is that our minors, the girl child, should be allowed to mature, before going into marriage,” Mma Wokocha, President of the Women’s Medical Association and one of those behind the petition, told the BBC.

“This very evil act should not be seen to be perpetrated by one of our distinguished legislators … that is what we are saying.”

The senator is reported to have paid a dowry of $100,000 (£66,000) to the child’s parents – and to have brought the girl into Nigeria from Egypt.

The women’s groups want Mr Sani to be taken to court, to face a fine and a jail sentence.

Our reporter says the whereabouts of the teenager are unknown – and it is not clear whether she has any parent or guardian with her.

Newspaper reports have also accused the senator of having previously married a 15-year-old girl in 2006.

The investigation is to be carried out by a Senate committee.

    He’s 49, she’s 13.

I’m not into numerology, but the number 4 pops out at me here. 49 + 4 = 53, 13 – 4 = 9. 53 was The Holy Prophet Mohammed’s age when he sank his Islamic membership into the pedophilic ideal of Aisha on her 9th birthday.

    *** 33:51 ***

Too bad Ayatollah Rullohah Khomeini ain’t with us no more. There is a question to axe here: is sex with a 4 yr old girl legal under Sharia? Yeah I know thighing is, but no Bill Clinton wordology games here, I mean real honest-to-goodness boner fide sex.

  2. says

Newspaper reports have also accused the senator of having previously married a 15-year-old girl in 2006.

What happened to her? Is she still among the living? If so, are they still married, or does Nigeria allow polygamy (at least among Moslems)? Or did he divorce her when she reached the old age of 19?

At least the girl’s parents seem to have driven a hard bargain; $100,000 ought to keep them comfortable for quite a while.

  3. says

Ahmad Sani Yerima, 49, is alleged to have married her at the national mosque in Abuja several weeks ago.

Not at some obscure mosque somewhere, with some oddball Imam presiding, but *at the national mosque in Abuja*. Nor is Ahmad Sani Yerima some crank, but *a senator and the former governor of Zamfara state*. Note, he presided over the introduction of Shari’ah law in the first state in Nigeria’so one would assume that the man knows something about what Shari’ah allows”including the status of legalized child rape under its aegis.

And this is not the first time the good senator has done such a thing:

“Newspaper reports have also accused the senator of having previously married a 15-year-old girl in 2006.”

What happened to this girl, who would just 19 now? Did he divorce her? Is he still married to her? Does he have other wives as well?

From everything I have read, it is by no means clear that polygamy is legal under the Nigerian constitution”not, of course, that this would stop any “devout” Muslim, even if he is a “public servant”.

And, of course, Zamfara state was just the first to adopt Shari’ah. In little over a decade, almost half of Nigeria is now under barbaric Islamic law”and there is a violent campaign to bring the rest of the nation”Africa’s most populous”under Shari’ah as well”including Christian and animist Nigerians.

  4. says

What a surprise. The BBC report only mentions Sharia and the National Mosque.

No mention of Islam, Muslim, Prophet Muhammad’s example, Qur’an, hadith, etc, etc.

If this had involved a British child or a Roman Catholic priest, the BBC would be in apoplectic orbit with coverage.

  5. says

Hell, at least they mentioned the words “Sharia” and “mosque” which musta been like pulling teeth.

    *** 92:8 ***

Usually the Beeb would never use such words. The globo-socialists there must be deeply offended by pedophilia, even when committed by a high ranking Moslem.

    *** 33:51 ***

If committed by a low ranking Moslem? There would not have been a story at all. As with all the pedophile Moslems operating in England right now.

  6. says

“Newspaper reports have also accused the senator of having previously married a 15-year-old girl in 2006.”

The eternal and unavoidable problem for the pedophile: children grow up quickly and must regularly be replaced with younger ones.

Humbert Humbert in Nabokovs novel LOLITA dreamed of solving the problem this way:

“I must confess that depending on the condition of my glands and
ganglia, I could switch in the course of the same day from one pole of insanity to the other – from the thought that around 1950 i would have to get rid somehow of a difficult adolescent whose magic nymphage had evaporated – to the thought that with patience and luck might have her produce eventually a nymphet with my blood in her exquisite veins, a Lolita the Second, who would be eight or nine around 1960, when I would still be
dans la force de l’áge; indeed, the telescopy of my mind, or un-mind, was strong enough to distinguish in the remoteness of time a vieillard encore vert – or was it green rot? – bizarre, tender, salivating Dr. Humbert, practicing on supremely lovely Lolita the Third the art of being a granddad.”

(Quoted from Vladimir Nabokovs “Lolita”, 1955).

  7. says

I am aware of Islam’s history regarding child marriage. I understand that it is *allowed* in the culture, but why is it so commonly *accepted*? Regardless of your religion, you should still have a conscience that screams, “This is wrong!”

Is there something in Islamic teaching that says it’s preferable to have a child bride as opposed to an adult bride? (Aside from practical reasons such as families doing it because of poverty and such.) I am unclear on this.

  8. says

Wow, where’s N.O.W.? Where are the other feminists and women’s libbers?

They’re all at one university or another living in tenured sinecures and enjoying good old fashioned lesbian sex. They never gave a damn about women’s rights, all along they only cared about themselves, their pieties and their pleasures. And globo-socialism, of course.

    *** 33:51 ***

Regardless of your religion, you should still have a conscience that screams, “This is wrong!”

The Companions of Mohammed were at first distraught by the kiddie sex stuff he had gotten into, and expressed concerns. But that changed when Mohammed for his part expressed a little 6th Pillar of Islam action, and they quieted down. Gradually, these Bronze Age Arabs came to understand the wonders of kiddie sex themselves, all was good, and world conquest was underway.

  9. says

It makes sense that he imported his bride from Egypt, given that one of his countrymen has already married 86 wives. So obviously, there is a dearth of women in Nigeria

  10. says

My hunch is that certain men like very young brides because the girls have not yet formed any kind of sense about what is pure and lovely in male-female relationships.

Thus, when married off to an old man, the self-interest and self-preservation instincts of the child are nipped in the bud; a better way to express it would be that they are traumatized and destroyed. Before she ever reaches an age where she can analyze her own desires, and perhaps follow them, she is prevented from ever becoming an independent person. From father/brothers to husband with nothing in between.

In my mind, taking a child bride is evidence of an extremely insecure man, who cannot handle any kind of independence, resistance or rebellion from a woman. Also he doesn’t have to bother to apply any tenderness to woo and win her love.

Sadly, many of these girls do love their much older husbands, because he is the only one she has ever known, and cannot compare him to any other. I supposed if he doesn’t beat her often, she probably feels he does have some affection for her.

    Dear Momo,
My father left me $87,000,000 in his will but I need to bribe Nigerian officials to get it out of the country. I would like to transfer the funds to your name, to your account. In exchange for your help I will allow you to keep $20,000,000 over and above the $100,000 I paid for little Aisha. To be a legitimate transferee in Nigeria you must deposit at least $100,000 into a Nigerian bank account. Time is of the essence- if we don’t act quickly the Nigerian govt will find out about my inheritance and heavily tax the money. Also, little Aisha isn’t getting any younger.
    Yours Truly,
Ahmad Sani Yerima (your future son-in-law)

  12. says

    For Mo,

” That’s why I cannot imagine why anyone who first learns of Muhammad’s behavior with Aisha doesn’t run screaming the other way. If I was a Muslim who didn’t read the Koran much and just followed the basics of the religion without wanting anything to do with violence or any of the other negative aspects, learning about this would turn me off the religion forever! ”

That is of course one of the first things everyone wonders when they first hear that. Of course, there are always numerous issues with this. For one, Muslims will dispute the Hadiths even though they are from strong Bukhari and Muslim Hadith. Shiites for example. believe, at least in theory, that these hadiths are unreliable and cannot really be taken seriously. As has been noted of course, that does not stop the most f*cked up of them, i.e. Khomeini, from appealing to these supposedly unreliable hadith to justify sexual self indulgences. And other Muslims believe these Hadith are corrupted hadith fabricated by people ignorant of Muhammed trying to add their own twisted version of his history in there. That is not entirely unreasonable as out of the hundreds of thousands of hadiths there could be some that are corrupt and added by ignorant buffoons who wanted to justify their own perversions. Of course, it can also be noted how Muslims have in todays time been increasingly insisting that only the Hadith that make the ideology look depraved are the corrupt Hadiths.

Also, I note that a few people have noted that some of Muhammed’s companions did object to his alleged interest of immature girls. I had suspected that Muhammed’s interest in girls Aisha’s age, presuming it to be true, were unfortunately not out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, large numbers of things in Hadith and Sura that in our era of universal human rights that are, rightfully of course, seen as esp heinous were in fact fairly commonplace in the Arab culture Muhammed lived in and even neighboring cultures. Not that it excuses Muahmmed’s actions in light of his claim to be Eternal Messenger of God, but it does unfortunately suggest that the problem really is with Arab people in general, and the Muslims like this *senator*, to give him a title he does not deserve, who emulate them.

So there were a few people, gravenimage, for example, who found hadiths that showed other people at that time also did not approve of child sex, though it could simply be a mater of they did not want to marry virgins. I know Muslims have in debates have said that if Aisha’s age was truly unacceptable in that culture, then why was it that no one, not even his critics who mocked his claim to prophethood, raised their objections, esp when they were attacking other things he did.

Now we clearly by now know how much that relativist defense falls flat on its face and really isnt nearly good enough to defend islam, but it does show why certain people-Arabs in particular of course-do have difficulties distancing themselves from islamic culture. So if some of the people above do actually know of instances where Muhammed’s contemporaries specifically criticized his marraige to Aisha over her age, I think ti would be very interesting to see it. Aisha’s father Abu Bakr is the only one I know of who did object, and that was mostly because she was his daughter and he worried about her, that or he wanted to ensure she would marry someone he approved of and could give him political power, whatever.

  13. says

BTW, just in case it was not clear, I was not for a second acknowledging any validity of the relativist defenses when it comes to Muhammed as is recorded in Hadith and Sura. I was just wondering if someone would perchance have knowledge of the Bedouins and Arabs of the time, besides the Jews, who had objected to things like Aisha’s age. That could help determine to what extent the problem with Islamic texts is part of a unique “islamic” culture that causes these huge problems or if it ultimately is, to a certain extent, about problems inherent in Arab communities, in which case Arabs and related peoples would ultimately have to face facts that their entire culture is, in many ways, unacceptable.

  14. says

I don’t know about anybody else, but ipsofacto gravely informing us that it’s only natural for lots of adult males to feel like f***ing little girls of six, seven or eight years old – little girls with no pubic hair and no breasts, even – makes me feel sick.

I suggest ipsofacto go and ask a midwife or a gynecologist what happens, precisely, in gory detail, to the vaginal canal and/ or anus, and often to the cervix, of a girl of six, seven, eight or nine, or for that matter ten or eleven, who has not even achieved puberty, if a fully adult male insists on penetrating her anally or vaginally, whether by force, or even having ‘groomed’ and seduced her.

And then let him argue, to that midwife, or preferably to a gynecologist or midwife who has had to do the repairs on girls of that age who have been molested or raped, on the perfect naturalness of the desires that were enacted in that molestation and rape.

And let him try to imagine what it’s like to be on the receiving end of that level of abuse. And then let him try to argue that the guys who feel these feelings and seek opportunities to express those feelings, aren’t doing anything really wrong, poor fellows.

Ipso, if you are in any way in favor of child molestation I would seriously suggest that you kill yourself before your latent pedophilial urges get the better of you and you ruin some poor kids life.

    Mo wrote:

Well, the “Prophet” Muhammed’s first marriage was to a woman fifteen years his senior, but that seemed as much a business partnership as anything”Khadija was a well-off widow with a thriving merchant business, and he was one of her caravan drivers to begin with. Certainly, his marriage to her ensured he was comfortably off.

I used to assume that the “Prophet” Muhammed made much of Aisha’s disturbingly young age because he wanted to emphasize that she was a virgin when they married, but it does seem he was rather obsessed with young girls. Here is a Hadith, where he chides a companion for *not* marrying a child-bride:

When I took the permission of Allah’s Apostle (the blessing and peace of Allah be upon him), he asked me whether I had married a matron. He said: “Why hadn’t you married a virgin that would play with you, and you would play with her?” I replied: “O Allah’s Apostle! My father died and I have young sisters, so I felt it not proper that I should marry a young girl like them who would neither teach them manners nor serve them.”

Notice that his companion had more of a sense of decency than the “Prophet” did. Clearly, he felt queasy at the thought of young girls like his little sisters forced to marry.

Here’s another Hadith, which shows Muhammed’s odd preoccupation with little girls:

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet (may the blessing and peace of Allah be upon him), and my girl friends also used to play with me. When Allah’s Apostle (may the blessing and peace of Allah be upon him) used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet (may the blessing and peace of Allah be upon him) would call them to join and play with me.

In addition, Muhammed was interested in a little *two-year-old girl* whom he wanted to marry when she got a little older. Luckily for her, he was pretty long in the tooth at this point, and was finally unable to add her to his growing harem.

  20. says

“Regardless of your religion, you should still have a conscience that screams, “This is wrong!”

The classical shy pedophile from literature, Humbert Humbert, in Nabokovs novel LOLITA (1955), seems to have some guilt but tries to ease the burden of his Christian conscience in this creative way when addressing the jury:

“The stipulation of the Roman law, according to which a girl may marry at twelve, was adopted by the Church, and is still preserved, rather tacitly, in some of the United States. And fifteen is lawful everywhere.

There is nothing wrong, say both hemispheres, when a brute of forty, blessed by the local priest and bloated with drink, sheds his sweat-drenched finery and thrusts himself up to the hilt into his youthful bride. “In such stimulating temperate climates [says an old magazine in this prison library] as St. Louis, Chicago and Cincinnati, girls mature about the end of their twelfth year.” Dolores Haze was born less than three hundred miles from stimulating Cincinnati. I have but followed nature. I am nature’s faithful hound. Why then this horror that I cannot shake off? Did I deprive her of her flower? Sensitive gentlewomen of the jury, I was not even her first lover.”

Even if a Muslim man experience some guilt when marrying and defloring a pre pubescent girl, he can comfort himself in the belief that the almighty Allah and his prophet can not be wrong.
He should rely on Allah and not his primitive (human) moral instincts.

The Ayatollah Khomeini followed his prophet carefully. He married a girl of ten years old, and encouraged other men to do likewise, saying that fathers should give their daughters away before their first period:

” … the Ayatollah himself married a ten-year-old girl when he was twenty-eight? Did she[the Khomeini supporter] know that Khomeini called marriage to a girl before her first menstrual period “a divine blessing,” and advised the faithful: “Do your best to ensure that your daughters do not see their first blood in your house”?

  21. says

Ipso Facto, are you really trotting out the fictional character Humbert Humbert”a brutal, narcissistic and self-deluding figure”to show that pedophilia is supposedly condoned in the West?

This character is virtually universally despised. Very few readers take Humbert Humbert’s self-serving self-defense at face value. He presents the virtual epitome of the “unreliable narrator”.

@ Stand fast in the liberty

This does make a lot of sense. It’s almost worse than the physical abuse because it makes these little girls think of this as normal, simply because they have nothing to compare it to. It’s very sad. And despicable, that men would do such a thing.

That’s why I cannot imagine why anyone who first learns of Muhammad’s behavior with Aisha doesn’t run screaming the other way. If I was a Muslim who didn’t read the Koran much and just followed the basics of the religion without wanting anything to do with violence or any of the other negative aspects, learning about this would turn me off the religion forever!

  23. says

“WTF has Nabakov got to do with it?”

Everything and nothing. The name is Nabokov.

As good Christians we may feel disgust and rage about paedophilia being legalized in fundamentalist Islamic societies, but for deeper reflection on the subject I propose reading Nabokovs masterpiece LOLITA and take a look at some scientific studies of the prevalence of the phenomena:

“The extent to which pedophilia occurs is not known with any certainty. Some studies have concluded that at least a quarter of all adult men may have some feelings of sexual arousal in connection with children. Freund et al. (1972) remarked that “with males who have no deviant object preferences, clearly positive sexual reactions occur to [nude] 6- to 8-year old female children.”

In 1989 Briere and Runtz conducted a study on 193 male undergraduate students concerning pedophilia. Of the sample, 21% acknowledged sexual attraction to some small children; 9% reported sexual fantasies involving children; 5% admitted masturbating to these fantasies; and 7% conceded some probability of actually having sex with a child if they could avoid detection and punishment. These sexual interests were associated with negative early sexual experiences, masturbation to pornography, self-reported likelihood of raping a woman, frequent sex partners, and attitudes supportive of sexual dominance over women.

The authors also noted that “given the probable social undesirability of such admissions, [one could] hypothesize that the actual rates … were even higher.”

A study by Hall et al. of Kent State University found that, of their sample of 80 adult male volunteers, 20% reported some attraction to prepubescent girls and 26.25 % exhibited sexual arousal to heterosexual pedophilic stimuli that equaled or exceeded their arousal to the adult stimuli.”

ISLAM is known by the term “Din al-Fitra” or “the natural religion”, and paedophilia is considered natural, but homosexuality not. Seems Islam got the statistics about male desires on its side, but not the morality.

  24. says

None of the scientific studies report of adult males who feel like f***ing little girls of six, seven or eight years old – and I don´t want you to believe anything but just relate to the facts objectively. The figures I refer to may be even more shocking than the The Kinsey Report on Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) indicating 10% for homosexuality in the general population.

But one thing is “feelings of sexual arousal in connection with children”, or “positive sexual reactions towards [nude] 6- to 8-year old female children”, or “sexual attraction to some small children”, or having “sexual fantasies involving children”, or “masturbating to these fantasies”, or “conceded some probability of actually having sex (unspecified) with a child if they could avoid detection and punishment” – quite another thing is actually “f***ing little girls of six, seven or eight years old” – to use your own expression.

Rape involving forced penetration of vagina or anus of girls in this age group is extremely rare in our culture, but may occur more frequently (and unreported) in some tribal Muslim communities, I assume.

The typical Western paedophile perpetrator does not want to harm the child physically or cause pain. In most rape cases involving violence and forced penetration against the child the perpetrator is diagnosed with a patological condition apart from peadophilia.

The situation may be somewhat different in Islam in this respect because violence (beating) of disobedient women or children is sanctioned in the Islamic tradition but strictly forbidden and punishable in most Western countries.

So use your good intellect to attack the problem instead of the messenger.

  25. says

Amen, Dumbledoresarmy! I was going to respond to that post but I could barely believe what I was seeing. Such comments don’t even deserve a response, except as you have done here.

To find people defending this behavior in any way is beyond appalling.

  26. says

In all honesty, I think ipso is trying to go a few octaves deeper into the analysis; I don’t think he is a perv. It should make us all think deeply. I think sexual attraction or sexual response to stimuli is from the deepest id and we cannot always predict what will arouse us but we sure as hell can control ourselves (if we are sane) and also bring about hard hitting legislation against those who cannot control themselves.

  27. says

Thank you for your rational approach to the problem of wide spread paedophilia in the male population.

The reaction from some debaters trying to demonize the messenger instead of analyzing the problem objectively seems to me to be suffering from paedophobia just like many Americans some fifty years ago suffered from homofobia when homosexuality was classified as a mental disaese and a social taboo.

I am not surprised or offended by such instinctive reactions of social self preservation. The best strategy to prove that you are not inflicted with this widespread strain of evil yourself is to attack anybody who does not express deep chock, condemnation and demand harsh punishment in every sentence they utter about the subject.

    About taboos:

Taboos can include sex, death, dietary restrictions (halal and kosher diets, religious vegetarianism, and the prohibition of cannibalism), restrictions on sexual activities and relationships (sex outside of marriage, adultery, intermarriage, miscegenation, homosexuality, incest, animal-human sex, adult-child sex, sex with the dead), sexual fetishes, restrictions of bodily functions (burping, flatulence, defecation and urination), restrictions on the use of psychoactive drugs, restrictions on state of genitalia such as (transsexual gender identity, circumcision or sex reassignment), exposure of body parts (ankles in the Victorian British Empire, women’s hair in parts of the Middle East, nudity in the US), and restrictions on the use of offensive language. Foot Binding, practiced in ancient China, would also be considered taboo in the context of modern cultural mores.

No taboo is known to be universal, but some (such as the cannibalism, exposing of intimate parts, intentional homicide, and incest taboos) occur in the majority of societies. Taboos may serve many functions, and often remain in effect after the original reason behind them has expired. Some have argued that taboos therefore reveal the history of societies when other records are lacking.

Taboos often extend to cover discussion of taboo topics. This can result in taboo deformation (euphemism) or replacement of taboo words. Taboos challenge one’s free speech and individual rights to express a subject or issue in need to be addressed for the benefit, not to damage, any given society.

Also, Sigmund Freud provided an analysis of taboo behaviors, highlighting strong unconscious motivations driving such prohibitions. In this system, described in his collections of essays Totem and Taboo, Freud postulates a link between forbidden behaviors and the sanctification of objects to certain kinship groups. Freud also states here that the only two “universal” taboos are that of incest and patricide, which formed the eventual basis of modern society.

To me it is revealing that that even dumbledoresarmy seems to regard paedophilia as a taboo, and use a replacement word out of fear for social stigmation. Why not write the F-word in clear text instead of hiding it behind some astericks? The word “fuck” is probably the most used word in the English language, but most English-speaking countries censor it on television and radio.

A study of the attitudes of the British public found that fuck was considered the third most severe profanity and its derivative motherfucker second. Cunt was considered the most severe (Hargrave, 2000). Some have argued that the prolific usage of the word fuck has de-vulgarized it, an example of the “dysphemism treadmill”. Despite its offensive nature, the word is common in popular usage.

The highly profane term remains a taboo word to many people in English-speaking countries, while others feel the word remains inappropriate in social etiquette when used by a male in the presence of women. The word also carries a sacrilegious connotation to some. Many religious people oppose the use of profane, vulgar, and “curse” words which they see as offensive to a deity. It is considered highly offensive to utter the word in the presence of children.

Non-English-speaking cultures tend to recognize the word’s vulgarity. However, it generally is not censored as frequently in those forums.

The biggest social taboo in our time is not male sexual abuse of children but female sexual abuse of children. Maybee this is why words such as “motherfucker” and “cunt” is considered more offensive and vulgar than “fuck”.

Here some quotes from an article in The Independent by Charlotte Philby:

“The systemic denial of female sexual abuse is one of the scandals of our times. While in recent years the issue of male paedophilia has been placed firmly at the forefront of public debate in Britain, with endless high-profile media and Government campaigns bringing this formerly underground issue into the public spotlight, it seems that the involvement of women in cases of child molestation is an enduring taboo, and in order to break that wall of silence we must start by addressing a series of serious shortfalls that run throughout the child protection services in this country.

… As well as founding Kidscape, Elliott is also a child psychologist with 40 years’ experience and the author of Female Sexual Abuse of Children: The Ultimate Taboo. She understands all too well that predators come in all shapes and sizes, male and female. In the early Nineties, while researching her book on female sexual abuse, Elliott was a guest on the Richard and Judy breakfast show. During her brief television appearance, she invited viewers with personal experiences of female sexual abuse to phone in and share their stories. Immediately, she says, the lines started buzzing. There was barely enough time on air to answer a fraction of the calls she received from men and women of all ages, from across the country, getting in touch to share their stories.

Since then, Elliott has been contacted by some 800 victims, 780 of them in the UK, each desperate just to talk. In a large percentage of these cases, the abuse took place within the family home, which is one of the reasons why cases of female sexual abuse are so incredibly hard to spot. Yet, sadly, this doesn’t mean that the abuse isn’t happening. As Elliott points out: “Considering that I am just one woman working for one relatively small charity, and this many people have managed to get in touch with me, I dread to think of the true scale of the problem.”

… Another victim recalls how she had been sexually abused by her babysitter between the ages of six and 10. She explains: “I actually thought all babysitters did that to kids until we got another babysitter. When I tried to get her to have oral sex with me she told my mother and I got into trouble. Believe me, from then on I kept it a secret.”

… In 2004, childline asked each of those callers who were ringing their helpline about sexual abuse to tell them the gender of their abuser. It revealed that over the period of one year, 11 per cent of callers said they were being abused by a woman: a total of 8,637 children, of whom 6,538 were girls and 2,099 boys. The NSPCC also conducted its own research in 2005, the results of which suggest that around 5 per cent of children who suffer sexual abuse in Britain do so at the hands of a woman, which is the number regularly cited by other experts in the field. But as Zoe Hilton, the charity’s policy advisor for child protection, suggests: “The true extent of female sexual abuse is still a hidden picture.” Furthermore, it is not a picture that many seem in any hurry to clarify.”

Exactly my point of view. We have a bigger problem than we think with child protection and we can only fix it if we are not afraid to talk openly about it and not consider it a taboo. Like this debate has done so successfully when it comes to discussing various unpleasant aspects of Islam being treated as a taboo and censored in the main stream media.

I support George Orwells definition of liberty:

“If liberty means anything at all it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”

OOOOO, big whoops on the spelling.

    Everything and nothing?

    hmmmm. Kinda like your posts?

Full of every kind of pompous and vacuous phraseology, but as for meaning…nothing there.

Ipso Facto is now conflating the minor social peccadillo of *burping in public* with raping little girls, as they are both “taboo”.

This is like comparing swiping extra sugar packets at the café with premeditated murder, because neither is legal.

This doesn’t represent nuanced thinking”it represents moral insanity.
