LAHORE, Pakistan - Pakistan's government ordered Internet service providers to block Facebook on Wednesday amid anger over a page that encourages users to post images of Islam's Prophet Muhammad.The page on the social networking site has generated criticism in Pakistan and elsewhere because Islam prohibits any images of the prophet. The government took action after a group of Islamic lawyers won a court order Wednesday requiring officials to block Facebook until May 31.
By Wednesday evening, access to the site was sporadic, apparently because Internet providers were implementing the order.
The Facebook page at the center of the dispute -- "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!" -- encourages users to post images of the prophet on May 20 to protest threats made by a radical Muslim group against the creators of "South Park" for depicting Muhammad in a bear suit during an episode earlier this year.
In the southern city of Karachi, some 2,000 female students rallied demanding that Facebook be banned for tolerating the controversial web page. Several dozen male students held a rally nearby, with some holding signs that urged Islamic holy war against those who blaspheme the prophet.
"We are not trying to slander the average Muslim," said the information section of the Facebook page, which was still accessible Wednesday morning. "We simply want to show the extremists that threaten to harm people because of their Mohammad depictions that we're not afraid of them. That they can't take away our right to freedom of speech by trying to scare us into silence."...

In an attempt to respond to public anger over the Facebook controversy, the Pakistani government ordered Internet service providers in the country to block the page Tuesday, said Khurram Ali, a spokesman for the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority, which regulates the telecommunications network in the country.But the Islamic Lawyers Forum asked the Lahore High Court on Wednesday to order the government to fully block Facebook because the site had allowed the page to be posted in the first place, said the deputy attorney general of Punjab province, Naveed Inayat Malik.
The court complied with the request and ordered the government to block the site until the end of May, Malik said.
Lawyers outside the courtroom hailed the ruling, chanting "down with Facebook."...

Who wrote their signs for them? I can't believe very many of them are literate, let alone can write fluent English. I have yet to see a Muslim write anything nearly so readable on any forum.
How many of these people even own a computer, let alone know what Facebook is and can read what we're saying about them? With most Pakistanis barely able to buy necessities, I don't think they'll be wasting money on a computer. Most of these people are rallying because they were bullied into it or because they're just blindly following the leaders who claim to act in the name of Muhammad. They'll go home and say, "Well, I don't know what this 'face book' thing is, but they say it is evil and insults our Prophet, so it must be stopped."

In a democratic community in which strong confrontation-in-defense-politicians have taken over from Islam-appeasing-politicians there could be much more intolerance of the intolerant by the really tolerant democratic people.
And if intolerant countries, especially Islamic ones, are blocking messages from the tolerant world, why not blockade the messages from these blockading countries, or even blockading the entire Islamic message section. It need not be complete, we can just sort of "outlaw" them. Just as long as they would get their censorship reciprocated. It would only be fair, wouldn't it?
It looks like democratic people are now exposing a real sensitive spot in Islam, the Muslim's idolising of Muhammad, and daring to probe further into it.
But this is where Democrats who see the Islamic threat clearly can make their peaceful, non-violent stand, as Gravenimage said! As they probably will be forced too sometime in the future to do somewhere anyway.
The advantage of poking red-hot-irons in this sore spot for Muslims could be that they either back down or otherwise MUST respond somehow. If that is with violence, that looks terrible.
But if democratic people and governments only appease Muslims the big question is: Will they or will they not in large part give up desiring and promoting their eventual supremacy, dominance? If necessary in violent or deceitful, so absolutely non-democratic, ways? If they will not give all this up, then further down the road, confrontation is probably inevitable anyway.
Did they ever in their history, when they had the power, brooke ANY sizable opposition against Islam, any criticism on the behavior of Muhammad, however respectful? I think not. So it might be better to provoke them now on one of their weakest spots. At the very least this softens them up on the respectful criticism and reasonable requests from the "good cops" among democrats if the "bad cops" badger them hard enough. Maybe then the so-called "Moderates", who so far conceded nothing worthwhile, will be prepared to make "real deals".
And now the websites and media are in place to record all the reactions of Muslims everywhere. And to use these as "ammunition". For the benefit of the majority of voters to realize, just in time, the true nature of Islam and the theocratic desire, attitude and high dedication of a large part of it's leaders and followers.
