Everybody Draw Muhammad Day: In defiance of violent intimidation and in support of the freedom of speech

Nick Gillespie over at the usually reliably dhimmi Reason magazine (thanks to Amy Alkon) articulates it well:

There comes a point in any society's existence where it must ultimately, to paraphrase Martin Luther (who himself was more than happy to see opponents put to death), dig in its heels and say here we stand, we will do no other. We don't need to be perfectly consistent philosophically or historically or theologically to assert what is special and unique not just about the United States, with its bizarre and wonderful articulation of the First Amendment, but the greater classical liberal project comprising not just the "West" (whatever that is) but human beings in whatever town, country, or planet they inhabit. And at the heart of the liberal project is ultimately a recognition that individuals, for no other reason than that they exist, have rights to continue to exist. Embedded in all that is the right to expression. No one has a right to an audience or even to a sympathetic hearing, much less an engaged audience. But no one should be beaten or killed or imprisoned simply for speaking their mind or praying to one god as opposed to the other or none at all or getting on with the small business of living their life in peaceful fashion. If we cannot or will not defend that principle with a full throat, then we deserve to choke on whatever jihadists of all stripes can force down our throats.

And so it is Everybody Draw Muhammad Day here at Jihad Watch, as well as elsewhere. Marisol's entries are here. My favorite among her excellent drawings is "Killjoy was here":

Kill_Joy.jpg

This one comes from Jihad Watch reader James Snapp, Jr.:

Browsing around the web, here is Bosch Fawstin's entry:

And one from Amy Alkon, who explains: "I don't draw. I am one of those wacky broads who dresses up her dog. For Draw Mohammed Day, to show my opposition to religious thuggery and my support for free speech and other Western values:"

Lucyhommed.jpg

And from Urban Infidel, "because I believe in free speech and not capitulating to the threats of thugs and terrorists":

From Jihad Watch reader Daniel:

Pamela Geller has many more here, and check out the ones on our SIOA Facebook page.

Finally, here is my own entry. When I spoke at Florida State University Law School in March, the indefatigable FSU law student Eric Giunta, who was responsible for bringing me to the campus, asked me to sign his copy of the Qur'an. I was puzzled by the request, since while I will happily sign my own books for anyone who asks, I did not write the Qur'an -- contrary to the belief of al-Arabiya and Professor Khaleel Mohammed. But I complied, and took the opportunity to draw an admittedly derivative Motoon of my own (in what could just as easily be a caricature of myself as of Muhammad), with an inscription encapsulating the mildest of Muslim reactions to such tomfoolery:

I, too, am outragedd!

Is that an apple on top of Mohammed's head?

And this brings us to today's question, for a prize of 1000 currency units with Saddam Hussein's face on the bills... What would the umma be more outraged about?

a) The "blasphemous" cartoons above

b) A mahoundian car bomb going off and killing 100 of their fellow mahoundians

c) Multiple mahoundian car bombs killing over a 1000 of their fellow mahoundians

That's a Mohammadan apple - an apple bomb a day keeps infidels away!!!

And at the heart of the liberal project is ultimately a recognition that individuals, for no other reason than that they exist, have rights to continue to exist.

I object yer honor...If that's the liberal project, why do they support abortion?

Cartoons...Drawing Mohammad the movie...High drama...watch as emotions explode, and rage is taken to the streets...Pakistan bans Facebook and Youtube, soon to be followed by other Islamic paradises...But it's not all mayhem and murder, there is plenty of laughs...Most of them are in the cartoons of Mahound where the 'artists' express there sense of humor...Vilks had it right with his cartoon of Mahound with a dogs body...Ma-hound...or my dog...My dog founded Islam...Haha...Vilks is a very wise man...

Great compilation.

Everyone should view these, esp. the misogynist depictions of the "shameless women burning in hell because they "showed their hair to strangers, mocked their husbands, and left their homes without permission."

Oh, the Christian angel Gabriel is watching the women burn with Muhammed.

Yeah, right. The same Gabriel who announced to Mary that she would bear the Son of God, Jesus. Uh Huh - Gabriel would do that. He'd watch innocent women hanging by hooks in hell because they showed their hair. Right, uh huh. You Muslims expect intelligent people to believe that crap?

That the false prophet Warlord appropriated God's angel Gabriel for his nefarious and malevolent purposes is an outrage to humankind.

The war is coming, to a country near you, this summer. Obamas attempt to stay in power. By any means possable.

James Snapp Jr,

I love your entry!

Hmm...A show of force does not necessarily mean war, Rasool could just be trying to intimidate...I'm not sure putting all those US forces in one place is a good idea anyway...
But there is some conspiracy talk that Rasool will create an 'incident' so he can justify canceling the Nov elections...
We will see how things develop...

Excellent points and art. Last night (the 19th) there were almost 6,000 drawings and over 60,000 fans of the facebook Everybody Draw Muhammed page. I think we're sending the right message. And yes, some of those drawings were offensive to me, but that is exactly the point. They and I are free to draw and i am free not to have to look at it unless i want to. Keep it up!
Too bad the Pakistani fb muslims can't see our fine work.

Twitter is having none of that freedom of speech stuff, it seems. I tried to do a second tweet of my 'round midnight tweet about this post and I kept getting error messages:

"Something is technically wrong. Please try again in a moment."

Got that repeatedly. And another message, saying I didn't have permission to post.

But it seems my account isn't suspended. It seems they're blocking "Mohammed" and probably "draw." I used both in my tweet:

Draw Mohammed Day 5/20? Hmm, I don't draw. I am, however, one of those wacky broads who dresses up her dog: http://bit.ly/bVfY1Y

Suggest other people try Twitter and see if they have the same experience -- retweet my tweet above and/or retweet this Jihadwatch post or others.

Here's my entry for Everybody Draw Muhammad Day! ...albeit secondhand and not my own art work:

I thought everyone would like to see where muhammad is right NOW! That's right, he's in the lake of fire which burns forever and ever ...

I wonder how "the global community" (i.e. the umma, the OIC and their sandal-licking dhimmis) will react to this... Here are some predictions:

Ekmeleddin Insane-glou-glou, head of the OIC, will say that "Red lines that must not be crossed have been", and the organization he leads increases its pressure on the UN for a ban on the "defamation of mahoundianism" (as if mahoundians themselves didn't do a great job themselves of defaming their bedouin cult.)

Turkish PM Recep Erdoclown, just as when referring to the assimilation of mahoundian immigrants in Western Europe, calls it "a crime against humanity"; his foreign minister, Ahmet Davutogluglu, just as when referring to military action by Israel against Hamas or resolutions acknowledging historical facts about the Armenian Genocide, calls it "unacceptable."

Arabdinejad blames the Jews and swears to wipe Israel off the map.

Qaddafi declares jihad against all drawing media, Windows Paint and Photoshop.

Swiss foreign minister Micheline Calmy-Rey, just as she reacted when the ban on minarets in her home country was approved by nearly a whopping 60% of the voters, says she is "shocked and disappointed", swearing to work with the UN In-Human Rights Council (which she worked enthusiastically to help create) to "sort this out."

The EU condemns the cartoons and launches a "the most beautiful calligraphy representing mahound (pbuh)" contest, stating that mahound is just as fundamental a part of European religious heritage as Jesus and Moses (if actually not more than them.)

Banner-carrying Porkistanis display signs that read "DATH TO AMERICA", "DATH TO OBAMA" and "OSAMA IS OUR HERROW" in massive protests.

Buraq Hussein consults with Dalia Mogahed on how to react to it according to how mahoundians want his administration to react... Could the First Amendment be in their crosshairs? Good thing it's not likely to be in the crosshairs of the 75% of US states needed to amend the Constitution.

Here's my next secondhand entry for Everybody Draw Muhammad Day! ...a fitting end to an evil life of crime:

muhammad wearing a bomb and a bomb vest ...

Fawstin's depiction is chilling and, for my money, the best. It would help things if, whenever Mohammed is mentioned, the visual that comes foremost to mind is Fawstin's drawing. Very well done and a reminder to us all.

For some reason, when I uploaded my image of Muhammad to the Draw Muhammad Day site, Facebook canceled my account.

Anyway, here's my image of Muhammad. If you go there, click on the image so it gets big enough to read the captions.

Not too good at graphics meself, so the only drawing I can picture lies somewhere between the quartering and the suspension.

The stick figure among Marisol's entries gave me the idea, in a roundabout way, for my entry:

Muhammad, by Jackson Pollock

I like it, traeh. I like it a lot. It's surreal and creepy, an image of horror. Mohammed is so deserving of it.

Can anyone tell me how I can post our picture here? I've posted it on my Facebook page and actually sent you a copy, Robert, but I'd like to just put it up here too. (Yeah, we're kind of proud of it!)

Thanks,

I hope that the coverage and support this action generates will lead to boycotts and protests against what should be the real target of protest.
Namely Comedy Central.
For practicing censorship on the South Park episode.
Drawing Muhammad is all good fun but in the end it's organizations and companies like Comedy Central that should be made to feel that we don't accept Islamic censorship.

My contribution

I do not really draw much or very well, but I figured that for something like this, I had to at least make a gesture.

one casualty ...

yay!

You know what would really truly get Muslims upset? Even more upset then the bomb on his head, his head on a dog and pornographic type stuff.

A picture of Mohammad bowing down to Jesus as in worship with the caption:

Philippians 2:10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

Amy, I read your column every week. I love your cute "MoDoggie". You truly are a "Goddess"!

I appreciate that. It's how I see him, a monster whose entire sub-mission was to make the world as ugly and brutal as he was.

Marisol's entries are great!! ...and really clever!

James Snapp, Jr. ...nice touch with the A.D. in the date, lol! Great drawing, btw!

Amy, hope your beloved pet gets an extra doggie treat for being such a good sport, hahaha! ...clever costume :)

Daniel, mo looks like a cross between Bart Simpson and Mr. Burns, lol ...Great drawing!

"SUBMIT" by Fawstin will give me nightmares ...spooky and BOLD! Hey but we'll NEVER submit, right gang!

I can't draw so,:

Didn't work like I hoped. Oh well, Happy Draw Mohammad Day, everyone! Keep up the good work.

j_not_a, I thought your drawing was pretty funny even though it didn't turn out the way you planned. It has a wonderful abstract vibe.

I can't draw either (and already tried ascii art which didn't work out) so here's my minimalist Mohammad: "0"

Wellington, thanks.

Like you, I thought Bosch Fawstin's was outstanding. That face with the block letters "submit" really hits the mark nicely.

I think Hesperado's idea of impersonating famous artists doing Muhammad is great. I might try to develop that idea a little.

Excellent! One can fairly hear the sounds of Muslim heads exploding the world around over this. I wonder what form the blowback will take?

Here is my humble contribution:
http://blog.robertgraham.com/2010/05/test-of-honor-draw-muhammad-day.html

The point isn't that we have good drawings, but that we stand in solidarity with threatened cartoonists. As you quote above "If we cannot or will not defend that principle with a full throat, then we deserve to choke on whatever jihadists of all stripes can force down our throats."

Bosch, "Submit" is very powerful—especially since Pigman's motto is "Never Submit!"

I like the way part of the turban looks like horns—very chilling.

I can't wait to post my own contribution—but I've run into scanner problems. I'll have to wait 'til my tech-savvy husband—gets back. Very frustrating.

I'm enjoying all the other entries.

I have to admit, I had *no idea* this was going to be so big—thousands of drawings, and *tens of thousands of fans of the concept*. I hope a lot of people repost the MoToons and MoDoggies, as well. And I'm thrilled to see that not only Reason Magazine but even the *Huffington Post* is on board.

This is really exciting—it's looks like a lot of people are ready to stand up and fight back!

I like Fawstin's picture as well.

And I have to say I think James Snapp Jr's is very clever, because of the use of the Islamic texts to 'shade in' the turban and beard (even if my eyesight isn't good enough to allow me to read most of them at the available level of magnification...).

Daniel's is good, too. I like the pun. Atrocious, but funny.

And Marisol's adaptation of 'Foo Was Here'...'Killjoy Was Here'.

I'll report you for offending an innocent dog. lol

I have just discovered, copied, sent around Fawstin's drawing of Muhammed. The picture made me visit his website and see among other wonderful drawings a series of images of Obama. Fantastic! You MUST see it!

It is said that a picture may say more than a thousand words. A few prove it better than Fawstin.

These are all terrific. Send them to every Editor in the U.S. Let's see how many will print them.

...never mind :(

Actually, Muhammed contracted a face-disfiguring disease, which is why he forbade any depictions of him. He had already rewritten the Bible, saying Jews and Christians were in error and replacing Jesus with himself, so it was not out of any kind of humility that he did not want his image worshiped. If only Muslims knew the truth, it would set them free.
