LUCKNOW: Darul Uloom Deoband, the self-appointed guardian for Indian Muslims, in a Talibanesque fatwa that reeked of tribal patriarchy, has decreed that it is "haram" and illegal according to the Sharia for a family to accept a woman's earnings. Clerics at the largest Sunni Muslim seminary after Cairo's Al-Azhar said the decree flowed from the fact that the Sharia prohibited proximity of men and women in the workplace."It is unlawful (under the Sharia law) for Muslim women to work in the government or private sector where men and women work together and women have to talk with men frankly and without a veil," said the fatwa issued by a bench of three clerics. The decree was issued over the weekend, but became public late on Monday, seminary sources said....
The fatwa, however, drew flak among other clerics.
"Men and women in Sharia are entitled to equal rights. If men follow the Sharia, there is no reason why women can't work with them," said Rasheed, the Naib Imam of Lucknow's main Eidgah Mosque in Aishbagh.
Mufti Maulana Khalid Rasheed of Darul Ifta Firangi Meheli -- another radical Islamic body which also issues fatwas -- criticized the Deoband fatwa as a retrograde restriction on Muslim women.
The fatwa was in response to a question whether Muslim women can take up government or private jobs and whether their salary should be termed as `halal' (permissible under the Sharia) or `haram' (forbidden).
Well-known Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwad, however, justified the fatwa. "Women in Islam are not supposed to go out and earn a living. It's the responsibility of the males in the family," he said. "If a woman has to go for a job, she must make sure that the Sharia restrictions are not compromised," he added, citing the example of Iran, where Muslim women work in offices but have separate seating areas, away from their male counterparts....

In India, all geographies with significant Muslim population - say more than 15% and definitely by the time it reaches 20%, have law and order problems and politicians that are worse than criminals.
All such geographies actually discourage modern business and industry and repel all good people who can improve people's lives.
Anyone interested should see the condition of industry in West Bengal (about 25% Muslims), Kerala (25%), UP (about 20%), Bihar (about 20%, though Bihar is improving for the last one year or so after touching absolute nadir).

This is good news, and good that the court saved the girl in question. What was interesting was that the girl was arguably a minor when married, and that the Muslim guy took advantage of that fact to conceal from her that he already had a wife, and she was just another.
A lot of non-Muslim women would labor under the illusion that they can marry a Muslim and continue to be a non-Muslim, while their husbands continue to be Muslims. While this may be true of some Bollywood actors, it's good that the court has spelt this reality out to them. After that, if the girl in question wants to stupidly convert to Islam and be wife 3/4, that's her problem.

The aspect of Islamic theology dealing with men/women relations reminds me of those post-moderns here in the West who have discarded the JudeoChristian belief in free will and personal responsibility for living one's life in accord with Torah/Gospel proscriptions.
For example: there are those in the West who believe we must be separated from our guns, our steak knives, our baseball bats or any kind of potential weapon as these post moderns embrace a pantheistic notion that things have an aura surrounding them forcing us into immoral activity, ungoverned by any free will CHOICE on our part.
The Islamic doctrines seem to declare that there is no free will in which it is humans of both sexes RESPONSIBILITY and ABILITY, with God's grace, to govern their relations in a professional, moral and modest manner.
Just another way muslim males have found to keep women subservient and dependent on men.

@ Infidel Pride . I agree this is a good decision . The problem of course that India does not have an uniform civil code .
I think this decision applies only to those muslims who marry under the Muslim Marriage Act . The act allows muslims to have four wives which is why the girl has to accept Islam and understand what she is getting into . However a Hindu/Muslim can also marry under the Civil Marriage Act in which case the girl need not convert . But in such a case the Muslim husband cannot commit polygamy (this is my understanding .. i may be wrong ). I think all the Bollywood weddings happen via the second path .
I think it is shameful how Muslims abuse the faith that their lovers place in them . Some girls may leave their families and loved ones behind for such men ( trusting their word ) only to end up being betrayed . This sucks ...
No wonder muslims always remain backward and then play the victim card, ably assisted by dhimmis in media and politics. In India, we have this Sachar Committee report (by retired judge Sachar) which claims muslims are a backward community and, therefore, need generous handouts at Hindu taxpayers' expense. This is absolutely insane. Anyone with a half a brain can tell you muslims are backward because of islam and nothing else.

Sharia law enforces the Islamic dictate of Muslim male supremacy and subjugation of all women, even Muslim women. Under sharia law, women are only equal to men when they are acting as soldiers for Islam (e.g. as suicide bombers). If they were already treated as equals in society, there would be no desperate psychological motivation to die for Islam.
