The stated American goals in Iraq never could have been attained, and are in any case the wrong goals. And I was simply posting an imagined bit of nonsense that some in the Obama Administration (and outside it) might well be capable of, thinking that they could conceivably be on the verge of some "success" -- as they define it -- in Iraq, when all the signs show exactly what I have been predicting since late February 2004, which was the earliest time -- once the invasion had already taken place -- to leave.

The Shi'a Arabs will never give up the power that the American invasion allowed them to acquire. The Sunni Arabs will never acquiesce in their own loss of power, status, and money. And the Kurds will no longer be satisfied with anything other than full autonomy, and the Arabs will never grant it to them, for Arab supremacism is part of Islam.

And that will happen, or is already happening, and will merely accelerate pari passu with the American withdrawal, which can't come fast enough.

Iraq is a diversion, a frolic and detour, an idiotic squandering. What counts is preventing Muslim countries from acquiring weapons of mass destruction, and both halting, and reversing, Muslim numbers and consequently Muslim power, inside the countries of the Western world.

The nuclear project of the Islamic Republic of Iran must be and can be stopped or so damaged that it will not be renewed, and the regime itself so damaged, by the damage so inflicted, that it will not recover, whereas if it manages to acquire nuclear weapons, it will never be dislodged.

And the theatre of war that counts now is Western Europe. And, I'm afraid, North America.
