Times Square car bomb: Alert street vendor summoned police over smoking SUV

A veteran rises to the occasion all over again. On the other hand, as for Comedy Central, it is clear their act of cowardice did not protect anybody from those who are determined to attack. Will they respond with more censorship, or decide now is the time for the gloves to come off?

“3 cops, street vendor stop Times Square car bomb from detonating; Gas, clock found inside car,” by Allison Gendar, Rocco Parascandola, Kevin Deutsch, and Samuel Goldsmith for the New York Daily News, May 2:

Three heroic cops and a quick-thinking street vendor stopped a madman from detonating a car bomb in the heart of Times Square Saturday night, law enforcement officials told the Daily News.

The T-shirt vendor – a Vietnam vet – told Officer Wayne Rhatigan there was smoke coming from a Nissan SUV on the southwest corner of 45th St. and Broadway about 7 p.m., sources said.

Rhatigan approached the car, saw the smoke, and sprang into action.

“I did a lap around the vehicle. The inside was smoking,” Rhatigan told the Daily News Saturday night. “I smelled gunpowder and knew it might blow. I thought it might blow any second.”

He grabbed two rookie female cops patrolling the area. Together, they pushed hundreds of people away from the scene as they called for backup, he said.

The Fire Department and bomb squad rushed to the scene.

What they found was stunning: a running SUV packed with three propane tanks, two red 5-gallon plastic jugs of gasoline, a clock, electrical components and a canister of gunpowder, police sources said.

“We are very lucky,” Mayor Bloomberg said at an early morning press conference at the scene, still wearing a tuxedo and red bow tie. “Thanks to alert New Yorkers and professional police officers we avoided what could have been a very deadly event.”

The two rookie cops reported seeing a man running away from the scene as they approached the car.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said cops were investigating a report that someone was seen running from the vehicle at some point and are reviewing security videotapes.

“It looks as if the perp was trying to light it up, and was interrupted by the cops, panicked and took off,” a law enforcement source said. […]

Cops closed a huge chunk of Times Square from 43rd St. to 49th Sts. on Seventh Ave. and all of 45th St. from Seventh Ave. to Eighth Ave.

They were pulling video footage from a number of security cameras in the area.

Times Square had been jammed with pedestrians all day.

Celebrities Halle Berry, Jessica Biel and Jessica Alba and thousands of women ran through Times Square in the afternoon for the EIF Revlon Run/Walk, which raises money for research to fight ovarian cancer.

Now there’s a contrast of priorities.

“The death toll could have been enormous,” a police source said. “It was a nice day and the Times Square area was completely packed.”

This was actually reported in several places earlier this morning, but the articles have since been updated to exclude the bit about the two officers.

Even without knowing any other news except what is written here, I can tell the perpetrators name, sort of. It will be abdul or mohammed or khalid or anwar or………

“Three heroic cops and a quick-thinking street vendor stopped a madman…”

These four are Heroes! …thank God they stopped this madman.

prophet muhammad (perdition is upon him) was a madman as well. My gosh, the whole of islam is mad.

islam’s slogan: Don’t Get Mad — GO MAD

Again, thank God they stopped this madman.

even if there was a huge death toll such as 9-11, the drive-by media would cover up the islamic connecting dots.
it would wake up a few more perhaps, but the far leftist media would still act like Chamberlains. l do thank God and heroic cops/people to prevent this carnage.

Let me guess, it must be the work of Buddhists, Hindus, or Joos! islam is, after all, such a peaceful cult that its people would never do such a thing. Nonetheless, “peaceful” islam is just a piece of crap. America and the the rest of infidel world does not need islam. Let these guys stay in the desert racing camels and praying 50 times a day.

what would surprise me, if this was to turn out to be al qaeda directed attack, is that there is no apparent multiplicity to this attack: there appears to be only one car

    Rome & Vienna 1985:
attacks within minutes of each other on Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport and Schwechat Airport (Vienna International Airport)

    Nairobi 1998:
hundreds of people were killed in simultaneous truck bomb explosions at the United States embassies in the major East African cities

    New York 2001:
The September 11 attacks (often referred to as September 11th or 9/11) were a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda

    Bali 2002:
The attack involved the detonation of three bombs: a backpack-mounted device …; a large car bomb, both of which were detonated in or near popular nightclubs in Kuta; and a third much smaller device …

    Madrid 2004:
The Madrid train bombings consisted of a series of coordinated bombings

    London 2005:
The 7 July 2005 London bombings, also known as 7/7, were a series of coordinated suicide attacks

    Mombai 2008:
The 2008 Mumbai attacks were more than ten coordinated shooting and bombing attacks across Mumbai,..

    Jakarta 2009:
The suicide attacks at two American luxury hotels in Jakarta

The more reason to do the “Draw Mohamed day”….Comedy Central is obviously going to cave in and never air the ep uncensored..

Here’s to hoping they find some identification and other evidence inside the vehicle….and I, too, wouldn’t be surprised to find out the name of the attacker had a familiar ring to it…and that he belonged to a particular religion known for its desire to kill people…

And like Raven, i would suspect a second devise was nearby…it is the modus operandi of the members of this particular religion of murder…First responders should be aware of this….

Again, will a failed-attempt be enough to awaken the slumbering masses? Would a successful attack have been enough (when 9/11 wasn’t enough)? Come on, USA–we didn’t get here by inviting people in who attack us on our own soil! Heartless curs, fueled by ignorant “outrage,” they wear their vileness on their sleeves–every day–for all to see!
How long will we play their fools? Who’ll be their next innocent victims?
That’s ENOUGH! OUT with them, already!

  10. says

This is beginning to sound less like “device failed to detonate” than “perp was scared off before he could complete detonation of device”. It is surprising that they did not use a remote device for a bomb planted in such a busy and visible location. (Somebody must have wanted those 72 Virginians realllll bad.) It was a terrifyingly close call, but not one of their more well-planned attempts in the sense that they apparently left the detonation in the hands of yet another addled shaheed wannabe like the Underwear and Shoe bombers. And that’s who gets caught by the alert and fast-acting witness.

No, a failed attempt will not awaken the slumbering masses. A successful attempt on Christmas Day or yesterday might have awakened a few light sleepers, but how many actually sat up and started paying serious attention following the Fort Hood massacre? It happened way the heck down in Texas and to someone else.

We’re under a boil-water order here in the Boston area because of a main break, and an electrical explosion filled the largest subway station in town with smoke the night before. Imagine that one of those events had been a successful jihad attack, AND that the Times Square SUV bomb had detonated, AND that the Deepwater Horizon oil platform explosion had been claimed by al Qaeda, all within a couple days. THAT might have been a loud enough wake-up call. Are they capable of doing that — again?

I’m not surprised that it was a Vietnam vet who spotted the suspicious car and first raised the alarm.

The Vietnam War involved a slow, bruising, mud-wrestling combat with an enemy that used many of the same sorts of dirty tactics as the jihadis like to use. This man’s instincts, honed by that experience, were dormant but not dead; they sprang into life when they were needed.

I wonder how many Vietnam Vets there are, spread out throughout US society (and in Australia, too, and a few other places)?

Right now, while there are still Mohammedan colonies established throughout the non-Muslim world, busily producing jihadis and hatching plots, we non-Muslims *need* every Old Soldier we’ve got. Like Old Cops, they’ve had their sixth sense trained in the field. We need them clued-up about Islam and jihad, and thus ready and able to help with the ‘holding action’ which has to happen while the Islamosavvy work on getting into power enough politicians who know that we have got to 1. stop letting in Muslims and 2. start pushing out the ones we’ve got.

The counter-jihad resistance – groups like SIOA and ACT for America – needs to connect with the Veterans’ associations.

If you know a Vietnam Veteran, and he *isn’t* aware of the Third Jihad: educate him. Start with this incident in Times Square.

Right, and while the handwriting is on the wall there will be masses of Americans who will try somehow to drift off into a peaceful la-la land of dhimmitude. There will be a large amount of New Yorkers included, who will find reasons to chalk this up to the work of a lone sick-o. God forbid that they should say that MUSLIMS ARE DESTROYING THE WORLD. That would be too much reality for them. I am convinced that drug addiction and alcoholism are merely the results of a proactive method of inducing and staying in a comatose state; I don’t know what you call the already brain-dead state of people who are supposedly not substance- abusers —-pathologically chronic avoiders of reality, I assume. Vietnam veterans are very aware and many of those veterans are Oath Keepers whose alliegence to the USA and her Constitution will never be considered by them to be in abeyance. It was a soul searing war never forgotten by its warriors. These cowards are even worse because mysogyny
and toleration for sexually deviant acts against children are rampant throughout every region where this ” Religion of Peace ” is practiced. We have 2 generations educated to believe that our Founding Fathers were and our Constitution
are worthless and irrelevant in these times. This conflict
will be upon us and no amount of appeasement will stave off
this army of beasts. Lets hope the effete Pentagon can still train citizen soldiers in 3 months as they did so well in previous wars if they have lost the knack we really are in peril.

    Al Qaeda, al schmaeda.

Anyone who takes the Koran seriously is Al Qaeda, or Islamic Jihad, or Jemah Islamiyah, or Martyrs brigades, or in just plain English an ISLAMIC TERRRORIST.

What part is it you don’t understand about that?

  15. says

Maybe it was, but the second bomb was aborted by Muslims after the first failed. They knew they couldn’t get the double whammy they wanted.

But IMO we’re running out of luck, one day they will get it right and it will be long before that day.
