Barcelona plans to be the first large city in Spain to ban the use of the full-face Islamic veil in public buildings, its mayor announced Monday.
Jordi Hereu said he will sign a decree which will apply in all public spaces such as the city hall and municipal covered markets and creches.
"It should not be possible that someone enters into a place without being identified," the Socialist mayor said.
He said the measure is not aimed at "any particular religious group" and would also apply to people wearing crash helmets and balaclavas.
Two other towns in the northeastern region of Catalonia, Lerida and El Venrell, have recently imposed bans on the use of the Islamic veil in public buildings.
Two more, Tarragona and Gerona, are considering similar measures, as is Coin in the southern region of Andalucia.
Spain's conservative opposition Popular Party has said it plans to present a proposal in Catalonia's regional parliament to ban the full-face veil in public places throughout the region.
Authorities in 11 mosques in Catalonia have vowed to challenge the bans in Spain's Constitutional Court.
Immigration from Muslim countries has grown dramatically in Spain since the 1990s, with Catalonia in particular being home to a large community of Pakistani origin.
There are now about one million Muslims among Spain's population of 47 million.
Last month, lawmakers in Belgium approved a draft law to ban the wearing of the Muslim full-face veil in public places, including streets -- creating a controversial first for Europe, although it is still subject to a senate vote.
Debate is raging in France as well, where the cabinet has approved a draft law to ban the Muslim full-face veil from public spaces, opening the way for the text to go before parliament in July.

This is something we must begin to address here in the U.S. It about time the West started taking measures to protect western values and culture. Go to Saudi Arabia and see what culture you must adhere to there. Go to these Middle Eastern cultures and see if they are open to having temples and churches built on their lands. Just try walking the streets of Egypt exhibiting the cross with Christ on it. Its about time that these bigots got a taste of their own medicine.
It's a reasonable ban. Muslim women can therefore still wear veils, but not full-face veils. It's a minor requirement from a non-Islamic country compared to all sorts of discrimination and injustice that Christians, Jews, ex-Muslims, and non-Muslims suffer in Islamic countries.

Banning the Muslim female Slave Mask, is commendable.
But banning any further immigration of Muslims, and preparing to remove from Spain, back to their countries of origin, such as Pakistan, those you already have, is what you really need to be doing...pronto. You do NOT want any more Muslims than you already have. With a Muslim presence amounting to just under 2 % of your population, you've already had a bunch of jihad plots hatched but foiled, and one messily-successful jihad assault, namely, the Madrid train bombings. Imagine how many plots will be hatched, and how many acts of violence you will suffer, if you let the Muslims become any more numerous.
If you need migrants, bring in culturally Catholic Hispanicised migrants from Southern America.
I agree, this veil ban is just a stop gap measure. The real problem is muslim immigration. Spain should stop all muslim immigration. If they needs good workers who are 100% compatable with their language, religion, and culture they should import the latin americans.
Did you hear that a policeman pulled up a woman dressed in the full monty burqu in Sydney last week. She stood toe to toe with the policeman and he stood his ground. She was swearing and screaming at the top of her voice. Not a pretty site.

In the state in which I reside, a woman tried to have her DL photo taken with a veil and when this was not allowed, she tried to sue.
"With those who hide what they are, I do not come in," (from the Bible) and I take it to heart.
It is not against their religion as not all muslim women wear a veil; it is to hide what they are and for their "owners" to keep them in subjugation. This ban in these countries is a step in the protection of all as muslim women have been known to hide explosives under their clothing and muslim men have been known to hide under the veil in order to carry out terror acts...pretending to be what they seem to hate...women.
Is it lawful for these countries to keep out certain groups according to their constitutions? Does anyone know? At one time, America kept out members of certain groups, but that would not happen now. With the current people in the WH, they wouldn't even make a ban on veils as it was said in Cairo, 'women have the right to wear a scarf'.
