Indonesia: Muslims destroy sculpture of three young women because it reminded them of the Christian Trinity

And the Trinity, of course, is blasphemous from an Islamic standpoint. "Bekasi: Islamic extremists destroy an 'immoral and blasphemous' sculpture," by Mathias Hariyadi for AsiaNews, June 22 (thanks to Block Ness):

Jakarta (AsiaNews) - Islamic fundamentalists in the district of Bekasi, 30 km east of Jakarta, have obtained the destruction of a statue of "Three young women," because it was deemed blasphemous. The bare chest and symbols related to the number "three" - the Trinity of Christian nature - make the work of art "obscene" and "desecrate" the religion of Mohammed. The sculptor has expressed disappointment and disbelief at the destruction, ordered last June 19 by the local authorities, describing the act "stupid and misleading." The Bekasi district thus registers as a new episode of religious extremism after attacks on churches and Christian buildings. Theatre of a rapid urbanization, the area not far from the Indonesian capital has not been able to harmonise economic development and peaceful coexistence, especially between Christians and Muslims.

Recently, the Islamic Defence Front (FPI) pointed the finger at the statue of the "Three young women" (Tiga Mojana in local language), a work by the sculptor Nyoman Nuart, a native of Bali who is famous worldwide. The extremists have branded the work as "obscene and blasphemous" and have had it destroyed. The artist notes that the sculpture has nothing offensive to the religion of Mohammed, adding that "while being topless," the 17 meters high work of art has no sexual significance and does not intend to offend Islamic morality, also because the young women wear clothes typical of the region of West Java.

An even more "ridiculous" accusation is that the image seeks to convert people to Christianity: the three women, according to the extremists, recall the "trinity", and therefore had to be demolished. In fact, there are three women because there are three directions leading to the roundabout where the statue was erected. And each woman, according to the intentions of the author, was to symbolise a "welcome" to those who entered the district.

Following the wave of protests, the district chief imposed the statute's destruction. A decision, taken by the authorities, also opposed by the moderate fringe of Muslims, according to which "the work of one of the most respected artists in the area, has now gone with the wind." A local witness, under conditions of anonymity, told AsiaNews that every work of the art should be appreciated, as long as "there is nothing blasphemous or contrary to any religion."

How repressed do you have to be, to blow up an object that doesn't even stand for what you think it does? Not only did these idiots take away others' freedoms to see the art and experience beliefs besides their own, but the Trinity in Christianity is not represented as female. (The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit) The artist was just depicting a group of three people. I guess any group of three people is then offensive, in which case, the maniacs are going to have to blow up all but two people in the country. Ugh.

Based on this logic, the 3 Musketeers, 3 Stooges, 3 Blind Mice...

...all depictions must go!

Here is the only pre-deconstruction photo I could find. Has the internet been scoured already?

"A decision, taken by the authorities, also opposed by the moderate fringe of Muslims..."

Finally! A story about Indonesia that reverses the usual boilerplate formula assuring the reader that the "vast majority of Indonesian Muslims are moderate..."

Destroying works of art out of a religiously-motivated, debilitating ignorance? Well, isn't that just Islam for you?

How do the apologists argue with the fact that this sort of foolishness is the public image their "faith" puts forward?

Although, on the plus side, at least it wasn't a priceless historical artifact. This time.

'Islamic Defence Front (FPI)' that are three words. Let us hope the proper conclusions are drawn regarding this trinity!

So anything to do with the number 3 has to go, because it reminds one of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity? (Also the Hindu trinity, for that matter.) On that basis, 2 has to go as well, since it represents the two natures of Christ; and 4, because it represents the 4 Gospels. And of course and multiples of these. 5 should be all right -- there are the 5 pillars of wisdom.
That pretty much leaves just 1 -- o.k. to represent the unity of Allah -- and 0 -- which can stand for the sum total of Moslem wisdom.

"the work of one of the most respected artists in the area, has now gone with the wind."

the only object allowed to be worshipped in the "religion of muhammad" is muhammad.

Heidi, thanks for posting that image. I did a lot of searching, and was able to find one with a clearer view of the piece—but it was not easy to find. The figures are (were) quite beautiful:

It is important to see what was lost.

The artist's name is Nyoman Nuarta. He is—perhaps not surprisingly—originally from Bali, the least Islamic of all Indonesian districts.

Here's what he has to say:

“They have taken on the culture of Saudi Arabia, because what they have been doing is not part of Indonesian culture,” artist Nyoman Nuarta told the Jakarta Globe on Sunday. “They know nothing about Indonesian culture, art or even religion in Indonesia.”

This gets to the heart of the matter—it is not that the statue actually reminded anyone of the Trinity, or even that the figures were bare-chested:

Earlier, the leader of Bekasi’s Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), Murhali Barda, said the statue, aside from having lacked a building permit, was un-Islamic.

“The women are wearing tight costumes,” Murhali said. “And above all, Islam prohibits statues and paintings that try to copy real living beings.”
.......

"Islam prohibits statues and paintings that try to copy real living beings.” What does this mean for Indonesia, which has thousands of years of Hindu and Buddhist paintings and sculpture?

What does it mean for Europe—fast becoming Eurabia—with its impossibly rich heritage of pre-Roman, Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, and Modern art?

And note—this sculpture was destroyed, not by wild-eyed Jihad terrorists, *but by the Indonesian authorities*.

Nuarta's most famous sculptures are of former Indonesian leader Sukarno, and a piece called "Arjuna's Chariot". This last piece, not surprisingly, has a Hindu—not Islamic—theme.

You did not look very hard

Here is an update and picture

Tiga Mojang Statue Bought by Balinese Governor

The Tiga Mojang statue taken down by the Bekasi administration has been bought by the Bali Governor for the island of Bali, Bekasi police chief Sr. Comr. Imam Sugianto said on Sunday.

"It has been bought by the Bali Governor. I have no idea when is he going to take it from here," Imam said, referring to Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika.

The 17-meter-tall carved steel “Tiga Mojang” (“Three Girls”) statue, by Bandung-based Bali-born artist Nyoman Nuarta, depicts three Sundanese women in traditional attire, who appear to be joined together by a giant sarong.

The statue was located at the Harapan Indah residential complex in Bekasi, which falls under the jurisdiction of the West Java provincial administration.

The copper-and-brass statue took a year and at least 50 people to build, and cost developers Rp 2.4 billion ($260,000).

But after objections by hard-line groups, who claimed the statue was neither in line with Islam’s values nor representative of West Java, Bekasi Mayor Mochtar Mohammad ordered the complex’s developer, PT Hasanah Damai Putra, to take it down.

It is very obvious that the indonesians are ruining the traditions and culture of their homeland. That bali is the only on eupholding this culture. I hope that Bali like east Timor would leave these losers and become independent. Bali would become a bigger tourist attraction because it would truly represent the Indonesian culture.

I feel a 'Draw Three' day coming on. Two robbers and Jesus on crosses, Al Jazeera - meaning a piece of land surrounded on three sides by water, Tulaq-Tulaq-Tulaq ('I divorce you' said three times by Muslims who wish to ditch one of their wives.)

All them, of course, images that remind us of The Trinity.

Tourism has already destroyed bali.

I live only 200 kilometers from Bali, and I avoid the place like the plague.

There are areas in Java where Indonesian culture thrives

Holy Shi'ite St. Paddy -- only dynamite can move those sisters!

And thank you for the updates & photos. Truly a sad day for art and culture and sanity!

I imagine that past episodes of "The Three Stooges" are also off limits in Indonesia. Or is that too sophisticated for the Umma?

The Doublemint Gum twins reminds me of an unholy depiction of Allah and his Messenger. They have got to go...

Indonesia: Muslims destroy sculpture of three young women because it reminded them of the Christian Trinity
Well, using that sort of logic there are a lot of other things in Indonesia that I'd like to see destroyed, on the basis of what they remind me of.

How is it that a sculpture of 3 young women might represent the Christian Trinity: FATHER, SON & HOLY SPIRIT? All of which sound masculine to me!

Never mind ...

Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, Al-Manat...

Faith, Hope, Charity...

Maiden, Mother, Crone...

Clotho, Lachesis, Atropos...

Mother Mary, Mary (sister of Lazarus), Mary Magdalene

I don't think anything in Muhammedan Land can stand up to any of these female archetypes. Especially the first three.

Don't forget Magrat Garlick, Grannie Weatherwax, and Nanny Ogg (ever read Terry Pratchett? I see his comic novels 'Lords and Ladies' and 'Carpe Jugulum' in a whole new light, now I know about the extent of the Mohammedan invasion of the United Kingdom).
