Islamic hatefest should open Canadians' eyes, but it probably won't

A huge convention expected to attract 10,000 Misunderstanders of Islam to Toronto should wake Canadians up to the nature and magnitude of the threat they face, but it probably won't -- witness this very article, in which Licia Corbella hauls out the slippery and untrustworthy Tarek Fatah (I didn't quote that section below) and props him up against Zakir Naik and these 10,000 of Naik's fellow Islamic supremacists, as if the two opposing sides were equal in heft. "Islamist hatefest should open Canadians' eyes," by Licia Corbella for the Calgary Herald, June 26 (thanks to Banafsheh):

More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the Journey of Faith Conference in Toronto on July 2, 3 and 4. That may sound benign, but that fact alone should alarm this entire country.

The conference, sold as one of the largest Islamic conferences in North America, headlines speakers with such vile and repugnant views, that to repeat them almost smacks of satire and farce.

The big draw for the event was, until earlier this week, Dr. Zakir Naik, a popular Indian Muslim televangelist, who has -- thanks largely to the alarm raised by Tarek Fatah, founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress -- been denied a visa to come to Canada.

Naik, billed as an expert on the Qur'an on the conference website, has said "every Muslim should be a terrorist," that gays and lesbians should be sentenced to capital punishment, that a man has the right to beat his wife, though he warned his devoted followers to avoid leaving a mark or hitting her on the face, and, surprise, surprise, he says that Jews are the "staunchest enemy" of Muslims. He is, ironically and comically, the founder of Peace TV. You couldn't make this stuff up. It's as Orwellian as, well, Orwell's 1984 in which the Ministry of Truth promoted slogans like: "War is Peace," "Freedom is Slavery," "Ignorance is Strength."

Despite being denied a visa to Canada and being banned from Britain where he was to attend a "Peace" conference there, Naik was still listed as the headline speaker on the event website until Friday morning and he dominates the benign-looking posters covered in Barbie-doll pink splashes of colour that are apparently still hanging in Toronto subway stations.

This is how he was described on the Journey of Faith website until Friday morning: "A medical doctor by professional training, Dr. Zakir Naik is a renowed (sic) international orator on Islam and Comparative Religion. Dr. Zakir Naik clarifies Islamic viewpoints and clears misconceptions about Islam, using the Qur'an, authentic Hadith and other religious Scriptures as a basis, in conjunction with reason, logic and scientific facts."

According to many Muslims, however, it is Naik and his ilk who reinforces misconceptions of Islamic viewpoints....

Yes. Except they never quite get around to explaining the exact nature of those "misconceptions," or to combating the influence of Naik and others like him among Muslims.

The conference organizers sought out Naik because he's considered an expert on the Qur'an and that's the theme for this year's event -- "The Holy Qur'an."...

Now, however, that the jig is up and his livelihood -- so reliant on the wilful blindness of the tolerant West -- is being jeopardized, Naik is saying his comments about terrorism were taken out of context. You be the judge. Here are Naik's exact words from a 2007 video: "But if you ask my view, if given the truth, if he (Osama bin Laden) is fighting the enemies of Islam, I am for him. If he is terrorizing the terrorists, if he is terrorizing America the terrorist, the biggest terrorist, I am with him. Every Muslim should be a terrorist." [...]

Saying repugnant things is -- and must be -- allowed in Canada. However, urging people to break the law by beating their wives, becoming terrorists and advocating the killing of gays and lesbians are not acceptable forms of speech. It's one thing to say, "I hate (fill in the blank)," and quite another to urge people to kill them.

And so it was right to deny Naik entry to Canada, but much of the rest of the show will go on. The only thing that could stop it is if no one showed up. If many people do, then the conference slogan, "Peace: the solution for humanity," is a smokescreen to attempt to keep the West blind to a dangerous ideological war that is raging before our very eyes.

Yep.

Okay, Canucks; stay strong and stand against this outrage.

Watch for suspicious bags that may or may not go Boom.

Watch for fake cops/security who might try to slip into your midst and detonate.

Let's just hope that the OPP and Ontario Human Rights Commissions will be monitoring all their speeches for incitement to commit violence against Jews, Israel, and America, and arresting/charging the guilty.

Licia Corbella is perhaps unaware that Zakir Naik also calls for the death penalty for apostasy and for blasphemy. (Regarding Naik's view that blasphemy against Islam or Muhammad requires up to and including the death penalty, he cites Quran 5:33. For Muslims in the West, for now, he recommends that they use whatever means they can to combat blasphemy against Islam). Naik's stating his opinion about a man who asked him about the penalty for apostasy amounted to an informal death sentence, which numerous Muslims almost immediately acted upon. The man, someone who initially said he was not religious, was held in custody, but then finally "repented" and "reverted" to Islam--at least, that's what he declared publicly under the threat instigated by Naik. Naik should frankly be locked up; death threats are illegal, and his calls for the death of blasphemers and apostates have much more far-reaching influence than the one death threat mentioned above.

Licia Corbella is also perhaps unaware that Tarek Fatah misled her regarding what the Islamic texts say about Aisha's age at the time Muhammad reportedly consummated his marriage to her. In fact, the sources Fatah himself cites, from which he and a few others indirectly interpret that Aisha was older than 9 (i.e., Ibn Hisham and Tabari), explicitly state that Aisha was 9. That is, Fatah's own cited sources directly and explicitly affirm what he is denying. Also, Fatah probably never told Corbella that the numerous ahadith from multiple sources about Aisha's age are regarded as sahih, and are accepted in mainstream Islamic scholarship. Fatah is also unlikely to have told Corbella that the Quran assumes in its divorce rulings that a man can be married to females not yet old enough to menstruate (65:4), and the Hadith support this interpretation.

Whereas Zakir Naik believes in killing people who publicly criticize or leave Islam and Muhammad, Tarek Fatah, for now, believes in merely engaging in character assassination and in making false and misleading allegations against such critics and apostates. The fact that Fatah opposes sharia, now, does not mean that he won't use other methods to zealously defend Islam and Muhammad.

typo "which numerous Muslims almost immediately acted upon" should say "immediately almost acted upon"

And so it was right to deny Naik entry to Canada, but much of the rest of the show will go on. The only thing that could stop it is if no one showed up.

Another thing that might stop the show is if enough right-minded Canadians showed up with rotten eggs and tomatoes (and maybe tar and feathers) to drive these jerks off their stage and out of town. Toronto is a big city; there ought to be many times ten thousand who are fed up with the Moslem nonsense.

I think this last gets to one of the major problems the West has in dealing with Islam—°we can't believe, on some level, that Muslims can really believe the vile things they say*.

How could *any* civilized person mean such things? Unfortunately, these are hardly civilized people.

Licia Corbella, despite her credulity over Tarek Fatah and, as she supposes, the vast majority of 'moderate' Muslims, is very far from the clueless person writing about Islam.

In fact, by the (admittedly appalling) standards of the mainstream media, her article is quite heartening. It doesn't surprise me that she was writing for the Calgary paper, rather than some rag in Toronto.

Sorry—that should read:

"Licia Corbella, despite her credulity over Tarek Fatah and, as she supposes, the vast majority of 'moderate' Muslims, is very far from the most clueless person writing about Islam."

I *still* miss IntenseDebate's edit function.

It looks like Naik will still give his presentation at the Journey of Faith Conference, via a live video connection. From the conference's website, they note that while Naik may be blocked from attending and presenting in person...

"Nonetheless, the attendees and supporters of Journey of Faith will not be left empty handed. The conference will go on as planned and Dr. Zakir Naik will be joining us via live video conferencing along with all the other speakers already scheduled. Join us this Canada Day weekend for a journey towards understanding our Divine Manual: The Holy Qur'an. [...] We seek to promote a healthy and balanced understanding of Islam through the Divine Revelations and Prophetic Traditions. Our mandate is to endorse and present the proper understanding of religious sources and to avoid human whims and desires which often lead to extremism, intolerance and religious violence.[...]"

[bolding added]

So, according to the conference organizers, Naik is not intolerant or extremist and doesn't advocate "religious violence"? Naik presents a healthy and balanced understanding? Prophetic Traditions? These people follow the Hadith?

Yes, this is a hatefest alright, and I will at least commend Licia Corbella for getting that right.

Also worth mentioning again, as was noted on Jihadwatch recently, is that Naik has an estimated viewership of 50 million people. Naik is not some fringe character. Like Qaradawi, he is very popular among Muslims.

Interesting, this oily snake Naik is a moderate? This reptile wants all Muslims to terrorize nonmuslims until they all convert to Islam. He supports death for gays and Jews. He believes in every sharia laws. So if this is a moderate what is a radical Muslim?

The idea of "radical" is changing, but probably by now pertains to someone who personally decapitates other human beings. This type will no doubt be recategorized as "moderate" in due course as we become even more desensitised to vicious Islamic behaviour.
Meanwhile, our own behaviour goes in the opposite direction, as in for example armies doing social work in Afghanistan.

QuAIA (Queers Against Israeli Apartheid),Here is an opportunity to broaden your horizon.I know you are a one-issue activist group, but there are speakers and others attending this event who,if given the chance would put you
and your gay, lesbian and transgendered brothers and sisters
to death. While you're at it,advocate for gay parades in Muslim countries.

Kinana of Khaybar wrote, quoting the conference website:

"Nonetheless, the attendees and supporters of Journey of Faith will not be left empty handed. The conference will go on as planned and Dr. Zakir Naik will be joining us via live video conferencing along with all the other speakers already scheduled.
..................

Thanks for posting this, Kinana. Good to know the Jihad conference attendees will not be left "empty handed", but will be able to benefit from the great Islamic wisdome of Dr. Naik—ugh.

This might seem like a small point, but it struck me in a really ugly way. These Jihadists have the gall to not only hold this Islamic hate-fest on Canada Day weekend, but to refer to it as such.

This is like the meretricious Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf referring to the United States in his appalling book, "What's right with Islam IS What's Right with America" as "Sharia compliant".

Maybe they can hold the next "the Journey of Faith Conference" in the US on Independence Day weekend. Evil bastards.

when anyone talks of imposing Sharia, ask them which Sharia? The then Pakistan Government constituted a bench of 2 supreme court judges (in I think 1953) to decide upon which Sharia. This was headed by Justice Munir. In his report he said he called many many religious scholars of Islam, and NOT ONE OF THEM AGREE WITH THE OTHER,on what constitute Sharia!!! Notone Agreement. Anjem Chaudery will defer from Zakir Naik & so on.....

This just goes on to show that Tarek Fatah is reliable in the fight against Islamism and Islamic supremacy. And not the other way round.

karthil, I beg to differ with your assurance re: Tarek Fatah. It's almost as if you credit him for the decision to stop Naik entering Canada, yet T.Fatah, as far as I know, didn't raise any objection to Naik joining the conference via video-link, and it's anybody's guess whether Fatah is one of the conference's organizers. Reeks to me of a good cop/bad cop set-up. Do correct me if you know any better.

The author of the Calgary Herald article states that "Saying repugnant things is -- and must be -- allowed in Canada." Gee, that would certainly come as a surprise to Mark Steyn, Ann Coulter and many others who have been confronted by Canada's official thought police. This is an example of the self-delusion practiced even by those who believe they are trying to stop the Leftward drift of the West. Even though the author has apparently awakened to the threat to the West that Islam poses, they cannot bring themselves to recognise the intolerance of the Left itself.

Do forgive me if this link has been posted up before, as the article hails from Jan 2008. Though Tarak is all-the-more plausible for his stance against sharia, I can't heip but feel that his stance is disingenuous.
http://tyo.ca/islambank.community/print.php?sid=4002

He was banned because he jumps the gun, so to speak, and talks as if the whole world is already subject to Sharia law. In being hushed (for now), he then becomes a red herring showing the world that the "majority" of "moderate" Muslims reject such "radical" views . . . until they are legal (under Sharia law).

kahill and Tarak may well be well-intentioned individuals who nibble mightily at the periphery of Islamism. Even if that is the case, it begs the question; why don't they go they whole hog and renounce Muhammed for the despicible individual that he was? Why beat around the bush?

Kinana of Khaybar...I like this username. This video is dedicated to you..or rather to your username. It's available in English and in French. It's about...you guessed it...Khaibar, Kinana and his beautiful wife Safiya.
http://crossmuslims.blogspot.com/2010/04/safiya-and-muhammad-safiya-et-mahomet.html

And how has 'Dr' Naik wormed his way through the woodwork to merit the term 'evangelist'? It smacks of yet another mis-appropriation of terminology. Evangelist...my ass.

As for Canada waking up to the threat of Islamicism, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Hi Robert. David from Toronto here. Thank you for all of your work and the contributions you have made that are undoubtably necessary in this period of political correctness and blindness. You have been pivotal in my personal discovery and search for the objective and unbiased truth. Looking back, I was a victim of mainstream media, the very media that has left us all in the dark and has in fact created a society of sitting ducks here in Canada, ripe for Sharaih. Canada needs to hear the unequivocal truth, upon which everything relating to the so called misinterpretations and the implications these so many apparant misinterpreters in so many different regions in completely uncorrelated topics have had globally. It will suddenly make sense to everyone fortunate enough to be exposed the facts that are black and white right there in writing. It will be at that disappointing but bitter sweet point, that they too will see the truth in the very writings that are in fact and ironically being interpreted with 100% accuracy, by the culprits acting on these very versus, as they are commanded to against any and all non muslims. Unfortunately the only step Canada has taken towards this, is in their newest offering; Al Jezeera to Canadians. Please visit Toronto ASAP. I can't stand to see the sheep being lead to the slaughter any longer.
