His firm decision to rule out a burka ban will disappoint some Right-of-centre Tory MPs, including Philip Hollobone, who has tabled a private member's bill that would make it illegal for anyone to cover their face in public....

It's just not a crackdown on illegal workers that's required it's also a crackdown on Asians, mostly Indians, coming into the UK on work visas issued abroad by Indian based agencies which have managed to flood the IT industry with poorly qualified but cheap imports thus putting our own engineers out of work.

The burka is necessary for economic reasons.Many Muslim families have many children and the wearing of the burka allows them to share the same driving licence,bus pass,season ticket etc,etc.

In tactical terms, I wonder if banning the burqa is such a good idea at this point. It would ease some of the suffering of women trapped in that black shroud though I'm sure their lords and masters will figure out other ways to subdue them. But burqas are such an infuriating sight to many Westerners, particularly Western women, that they are practically walking billboards on the evils of Islam and the danger posed by the demographics of Muslim immigration. The burqa ban should always be part of a wider ban on the imposition of Sharia and clearly stated as such.

This isn't real tolerance. This is, rather, an unmexamined Idol of the Age that we call "Tolerance" and that is to be worshipped at the Altars we have constructed to the Idols of the Age.
Tolerance does not require allowing your society to be slowly -- or rapidly -- refashioned from within by those whose utterly alien worldview is based on Intolerance, and Intolerance as the central and founding principle of the alien faith being protected and promoted, and not a mere temporary state.
For what does any reasonable person, Muslim or non-Muslim, understand Islam -- not a religion but a Religion And A Politics, a Total Belief-System -- say about non-Muslims? Islam is not tolerant. Islam elevates Intolerance. Islam is based on a clear distinction between Believer and Unbeliever, Muslim and Infidel. Muslims are not to take Infidels as friends. They are, rather, to smite the Unbelievers. Every part of Islam reinforces the message that non-Muslims are not only ungrateful, but rightly to be suppressed, or oppressed. And only in cases where Muslims feel themselves too weak, at the moment, should they refrain from open warfare against those who refuse to submit to Islam, or to rule by Muslims. A state of permanent war exists between Muslims and all non-Muslims, and it is the duty -- central and not tangential -- of Muslims to participate, directly or indirectly, in the "struggle" or Jihad to remove all obstacles to the spread, and then the dominance, of Islam. This isn't hard to understand. The scholars of Islam in the West understood this -- the ones who wrote, freely, uninhibitedly, until about 1970, when the Great Age of Inhibition set in. The BBC ran a story this weekend about a London muslim girl who went on a trip to Saudi Arabia and had to wear a burka for the first time in her life. She was surprised at the range available and she found wearing them was fun, fun, fun!

I am a 100% islamophobic Brit. I recognise that most of the arguments advanced for a burqa ban are valid, but I believe there is no point in upsetting ridiculous Islam unnecessarily. However it should be made abundantly clear that there will be occassions, for security reasons, when burqa wearers will be required to reveal their faces and others when they will be required to remove the entire outfit. I would be reluctant to board a any mode of transport which contained a burqa wearer. In addition establishments such as banks would be fully entitled to refuse entry to those wearing a burqa. I also think we should insist they are carrying a note from their father/husband/guardian making it clear they have his permission to be absent from the home.
Not allowing people to cover their faces, or to envelope the entirety of their bodies in the equivelalent of a beekeeper suit, is nothing short of a necessity from a security perspective alone.
Remember the case of the Florida Muslimah who demanded the "right" to not remove her burka for the driver's license photo? I mean, really.
