Honor killing in Turkey: Girl murdered by 15-year-old brother

Ninety percent of honor killings worldwide are done by Muslims. Yet the world human rights organizations continue to look the other way and treat the practice as purely "cultural," instead of calling Islamic countries to account for their tolerance of honor killing. "Turkey: Honor Killing; Girl Murdered By 15-Years-Old [sic] Brother," from ANSAmed, July 22 (thanks to Insubria):

(ANSAmed) - ANKARA, JULY 22 - A 17-year-old girl found dead one month ago was allegedly murdered by her 15-year-old brother in an ''honor killing'' after she left the women's shelter where she was staying, daily Radikal reported Wednesday. The body of Seyma G. was found half buried in the ground in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir, while subsequent tests revealed that she had been strangled to death.

Her brother Y.G. was caught by police and then arrested July 16. According to the Diyarbakir police, the suspects in the murder were determined after an examination of the crime scene revealed footprints in the area and fingerprints on the tape put over the victim's mouth. The victim had reportedly been staying in a women's shelter after being subjected to violence at home.

Family members allegedly found her after they learned she had left the shelter. Her brother, who is accused in the murder, had previously been detained for being a member of the illegal Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir. (ANSAmed).

Expect the established paradigm to be repeated once again: The story will die down...and then the brother will get a reduced or suspended sentence.

"Justice", Islam style.

He's off to a good start in life...Fifteen years old and already a terrorist and an 'honor' murderer...Allah has been a positive influence on him...

Almost all honor killings in Turkey occur in Southeastern Kurdistan. And yet, Turkey as a whole is nominally Muslim. If Islam were the only explanation, honor killings would not be heavily concentrated in Kurdish regions.

Given the sympathy the West has with oppression of Kurdish identity, all news from Southeastern Turkey should be reported as from Kurdistan.

Honor Killings are also "heavily concentrated" in the Islamic Middle East. Yes, Islam has everything to do with Honor Killings. Muslim society is an "Honor" society - the Killings in the name of "Honor" are embedded in the culture. They're even codified in Islamic law:

A manual of Islamic law certified by Al-Azhar as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy says that "retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right." However, "not subject to retaliation" is "a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring's offspring." ('Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2).

In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law.

Spencer often quotes the above.

Isn't that nice the Muslim kids learn "honor killing" at an early age!!!

Where did this 15 year old learn to be so religious - home, Quran, mosque, mosque imamaullahs, internet, classmates, the"culture" of Muslims, ...etc.

What's the excuse this time??? Must be a common criminal, nothing to do with Islam and its Arabian culture!!!

>"A manual of Islamic law certified by Al-Azhar as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy says that "retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right." Yes Courreges, all these Islamic religious laws are so phony!! They just provide a religious justification and sanction for all these criminal activities by Muslims!! No wonder Islam is popular in the prisons. The prison converts are happy that they found a religion where their criminal activities won't bring any religious repercussions!!! LOL....

Hold on, HiT is banned in Turkey. Is it banned in UK?

Notice, this article doesn't even mention *why* this poor girl was "honor killed". Perhaps the reporters for the daily Radikal were never able to find out—or perhaps it barely matters.

One can well imagine the "motive"—a girl who would not submit to Hijab, or otherwise dressed "un-Islamically"; a girl who left the house on her own; a girl who was seeing—or merely suspected of seeing—some boy; a girl, who, in some way, was *disobedient*.

While it might be tempting to assume that the brother acted on his own—that he was a "radical Muslim", with "extremist" views—he was, after all, a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir—it is more likely that the family was involved, as well.

Firstly, comparatively few "honor killings" are planned and carried out entirely by individuals, without the backing of at lest some other family members.

Secondly, there is the ominous reference to the girl having suffered violence at home before—not necessarily at the hands of the brother who ultimately murdered her.

And then, it sounds as though family members had been looking for her to leave the safety of the women's shelter—a shelter that wouldn't even exist in Muslim countries less secular than Turkey. Why were they looking for her? There may be other reasons, but it seems likely that they were already planning further violence against the girl.

Why did she leave the shelter? Are there time limits on how long she could stay, did she think she'd be safe away from her family, or did some (seemingly) sympathetic family member lure her away?

In any case, this scenario is all too common—that a younger family member—often, as here, the victim's brother—actually commits the murder. Boys—especially if they are underage—face shorter jail sentences. But it is likely here—as in so many cases—that this killing is a family affair, and that the main decision to murder the girl was made by an older man—probably her own father.

EastEnders bosses have defended a scene in which a Muslim character slammed down a copy of the Koran after scores of complaints from viewers.

Fans have watched gay Syed Masood, played by Marc Elliott, struggle with his love for Christian Clarke (John Partridge) in the face of disapproval from his devout family. Syed was seen to drop the religious text in frustration.

If Islam were the only explanation, honor killings would not be heavily concentrated in Kurdish regions.

Unless the Moslems in other parts of Turkey are so ok with the practice that honor killings don't even get reported.

Exactly. Islam is phony. Islam is nothing but a 7th century AD mass-murder political ideology, like Fascism and Nazism. Invented by a psychopath Warlord. Islam is a plague on humanity.

Repeat:

"A manual of Islamic law certified by Al-Azhar as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy says that "retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right." However, "not subject to retaliation" is "a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring's offspring." ('Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2).

Right on.

"Unless the Moslems in other parts of Turkey are so ok with the practice that honor killings don't even get reported."

Typical Jihadwatch cognitive dissonance. Where is Hugh? Even he/she would have to disagree with that comment.

I've been reading that the idea of honor killings comes from the pre-Islamic Arabian culture that continues to this day, and that the Prophet Mo despite his efforts was unable to erradicate it. Does anyone know where this practice comes from and can you site any sources? Thanks.

Typical Mohammedan cognitive dissonance.

Of course MANY Honor Killings don't get reported in Islamic countries, because they're accepted. Just as MANY rapes of Muslim girls/women don't get reported because in barbaric misogynist shar'ia law a rape victim needs "4 male witnesses" to be believed. POPPYCOCK! (no pun intended)

No, I don't think Mr. Fitzgerald would disagree that hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Islamic Honor Killings AREN'T REPORTED.

AREN'T REPORTED. BECAUSE THEY'RE ACCEPTED IN ISLAMIC CULTURE. END OF STORY.

To wit:

"A manual of Islamic law certified by Al-Azhar as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy says that "retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right." However, "not subject to retaliation" is "a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring's offspring." ('Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2).

Get it, Mohammedan?

Four years ago, a sustained campaign by Women For Women’s Rights led to the overhaul of Turkey’s civil code.

“It is now completely equal for men and women,” (Mujde) Bilgutay ( co-ordinator of the penal-code reform campaign for 26 non-governmental organizations) says.

Two years ago, she and others began studying the penal code. Article by article, they identified areas prejudicial to women, checked them against European law and proposed the amendments now before the justice subcommittee.

Partly as a result of the process, the government last year abolished Article 462, which had given judges discretion to reduce a murder sentence in honour killings by as much as 80 per cent.

But other articles still allow such killers to get off lightly, Bilgutay says.

“The ‘unjust provocation’ article is one. It says that if you suddenly do something bad to me and I react with rage and kill you, I get a reduced sentence because you were unjustly provoking me.

“In honour killings, men are getting reduced sentences by arguing, ‘I saw my daughter with a boy in front of the cinema, so I was really shocked and provoked, and I killed her.’ In fact, most honour killings are premeditated.”

Another article grants light sentences to young offenders, thus motivating families to *assign the murder to a teenager or boy*.

"Another article grants light sentences to young offenders, thus motivating families to *assign the murder to a teenager or boy*."

Oh yes, exactly. A brother, just like the little sociopath, age 15, in this tragic tale. Islam made him a sociopath, and so did his barbaric Islamic family.

Courreges W ,

I am not a practicing Muslim.

The psychological dynamics of domestic violence is codified in Islamic law. Most victims of domestic violence abusers are killed while trying to get away from their abusers - which is when most people are too afraid to help the victim, usually after having blamed the victim for "staying" or "putting up" with the abuse. Then, the abuser blames the victim for their own demise, just as they blamed the victim for the abuse. Enlightened and enforced laws against domestic violence may just be one vehicle against jihad.
