The Landmarks Commission meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, July 13, at 2:00 p.m. It will be held at 904 Lexington Avenue (at the corner of East 68th Street), in Lecture Hall 714 of Hunter College on the 7th floor. Anyone who wants to speak gets two minutes -- sign up in advance in the lobby of the auditorium.

A proposed Ground Zero mosque will hit its first -- and likely only -- city hurdle tomorrow when the Landmarks Preservation Commission holds a hearing to determine whether a historic building now at the site should be protected from demolition.But the battle will draw few if any of the city's preservation groups, which for now appear ready to sit on the sidelines rather than weigh in on the fate of the 152-year-old building at 45-47 Park Place, which would be demolished to build the mosque.
Yet a similar building was granted landmark status as being "one of the few remaining palazzo-style buildings on Broadway in Lower Manhattan." But this one is fine to be demolished -- because a mosque will go up in its place, and to oppose that, even though it will be run by pro-Sharia Islamic supremacists, would be "Islamophobic."
"The debate isn't about the architecture of the building, it's about the use," said Peg Breen of the New York Landmarks Conservancy, one of several city groups that have championed the preservation of historic buildings.The commission will be holding a hearing tomorrow on a proposal to designate as a landmark the five-story building, which features cast iron and a stone facade. I really enjoy viewing this great site. It's so exotic for me to see something like this that it's like going on a safari! I can't imagine living in a place like NYC any more than they could imagine living in Dark Corner.
I think they do REALLY great work. I love their historical and preservationist bent. Because of their interest in documenting & preserving NYC and the big following they have, their opinion might carry extra weight with the Landmarks Commission.

Muslims have done this atrocity of building mosques on the sacred places in other countries wherever they have invaded!!! Few well known examples are: Temple Mount, the mosque over cathedral of Constantinople, various holy sites of Hindus in India,all holy sites of Persians in Iran, and now they want to do the same on Ground Zero.
Their only aim is to defile infidels holy sites no matter what. If this commission in NYC does not understand this, it will grant Muslims to build this atrocity over there and it will be a constant reminder for Muslims that they killed 3000 infidels at this place and at least won for that day. Never forget Muslims are in perpetual battle with us and they will do anything to convert or kill us.

Just please don't get distracted into thinking only by saying this is an "Historic Landmark" because of its architecture can you stop this from happening. I could see the Islamics offering to placate us with the promise to keep the facade intact. Now they will look like the appeasers and we would look like the haters.

It has been a long-standing practice of the religion of peace to erect a mosque on the very site of a sacred or venerated site of a people it has conquered, to gloat, and to rub the subjugated peoples' noses in it. THIS SIMPLY MUST NEVER HAPPEN AT GROUND ZERO!!!

Fascinating.
I just watched on the web the depositions to the Landmark Commission, all members appointed by Mayor Bloomberg.
Prior to watching it I assumed that getting the building declared a landmark was simply a ploy to prevent the Trojan Horses from erecting their monument that will spit on the graves of the 3000 victims of 9/11.
While I found all the individuals speaking on behalf of the Muslim group to sound like three dollar bills and more often than not off the subject at hand, I was deeply impressed and moved by the intelligence of some of the people who provided reasons for the building to be declared a landmark, for a unique historical reason perhaps more than for architectural reasons, though they made a good case for the latter as well.
Two of the speakers suggested that since a wheel from the plane that crashed into the towers had gone through the roof of this building, it should be made into a museum as a commemoration of the horrible event. And that made great sense to me.
Nearly half the buildings in New York that have been declared landmarks have been declared so for historical reasons; all the precedent any rational group could ever need in making a decision.
Many of the speakers dealt with two issues while the deciding body needs to restrict its decision only on whether the building by itself,without regard to whatever will replace it, deserves landmark status.
If after these depositions, the Commission decides against landmark status, then we have a clear case of collusion and orders from City Hall. This should then call for an end to peaceful protests.
It will then be a time for New Yorkers, like the Americans of 1776, to rise up, to remind City Hall that this is a government by the people, for the people and we won't be railroaded by representatives with their own agendas against the will of the people.
It would be good to see those who lost relatives and loved ones, for the City's Firemen and the City's Finest to go on strike to join in protests.
The Mosque at Ground Zero calls for a civic revolt, for national attention - and a national outcry of ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Authorities fear easily offended Muslims who riot and resort to violence over imagined slights. It's time to demonstrate clearly that this is the most offensive thing Americans have ever been asked to swallow by their elected officials.
