She was never put on trial. More on the abuse of Pakistan's blasphemy law: "Mentally-ill Pakistan 'blasphemer' is released," by M. Ilyas Khan for BBC News, July 23 (thanks to Davida):
A court in Pakistan has ordered the release of a mentally-ill woman who was charged with desecrating the Koran, the Muslim holy book, in 1996.Zaibun Nisa, 60, was never put on trial and her relatives did not contest her arrest, her lawyer said.
Pakistan's blasphemy law prescribes the death sentence for anyone found guilty of insulting the Prophet Muhammad or the Koran.
Note once again the standard mainstream media assumption that we are all Muslims now, revering Muhammad as a prophet.
Human rights groups have been campaigning for its repeal. They say that the legal procedures involved are weighed against those accused of blasphemy.
On Monday, unidentified gunmen killed two brothers accused of blasphemy in the premises of a Pakistani court.
Public backlash
"Zaibun Nisa was declared mentally ill by a medical board soon after her arrest in 1996, but she was still sent to jail," her lawyer, Aftab Ahmad Bajwa, told the media after the court orders on Thursday.
"There was no evidence linking her to the crime," he said.
A police official, requesting anonymity, said she was arrested to defuse the tension - but everyone forgot about her when she was sent to jail.
Her family did not pursue the case probably due to fear of a public backlash, he said.
In Pakistan, people accused of blasphemy and their family members have often been lynched or killed by mobs.
The complainant in the case was Qari Hafeez, a cleric from Lahore who reported to the police that he had found torn pages of the Koran thrown in a drain.
The police lodged a complaint against unknown offenders....
Qari Hafeez told the media in Lahore on Thursday he did not name Zaibun Nisa as an offender in the case.
"Police acted on their own initiative to arrest the woman," he said....
This story reminds me of the era of the witch trials.
If anyone had an enemy, or a person they just didn't like, all they had to do was accuse the person of being a witch, and let nature take it's course. The accused was almost always doomed.
Not exactly the same thing as the article, but the mindset is similar.
"Pakistan's blasphemy law prescribes the death sentence for anyone found guilty of insulting the Prophet Muhammad.. "
And what about Prophet Muhammad insulting Prophet Muhammad ?!

Excerpts on Pakistan from the 2009 Report on International Religious Freedom:
PAKISTAN
"...Freedom of speech is constitutionally, 'subject to any reasonable restrictions imposed by law in the interest of the glory of Islam.' ..."
"...Law enforcement personnel abused religious minorities in custody. Security forces and other government agencies did not adequately prevent or address societal abuse against minorities. Discriminatory legislation and the Government's failure to take action against societal forces hostile to those who practice a different religious belief fostered religious intolerance, acts of violence, and intimidation against religious minorities... "
"...religious minorities are legally restricted from public display of certain religious images..."
"...The consequences for contravening the country's blasphemy laws are death for defiling Islam or its prophets; life imprisonment for defiling, damaging, or desecrating the Qur'an; and 10 years' imprisonment for insulting another's religious feelings..."
"...Some individuals bring charges under these laws to settle personal scores or to intimidate vulnerable Muslims, sectarian opponents, and religious minorities... "
"...The Ministry of Religious Affairs...has on its masthead a Qur'anic verse: 'Islam is the only religion acceptable to God...' "
"...Authorities routinely used blasphemy laws to harass religious minorities and vulnerable Muslims and to settle personal scores or business rivalries... "
"...Mobs occasionally attacked individuals accused of blasphemy and their families or their religious communities. When blasphemy and other religious cases were brought to court, extremists often packed the courtroom and made public threats against an acquittal. Religious extremists continued to threaten to kill those acquitted of blasphemy charges. High-profile accused persons often went into hiding or emigrated after acquittal..."
"...In September 2008 a former federal minister and host of a popular religious television show declared on air that killing Ahmadis was the 'Islamic duty of devout Muslims;' at least two Ahmadis were killed in Sindh within 48 hours of this declaration...At the end of the reporting period, the the government continued to stall investigation into the deaths..."
"...Violence against and harassment of Christians continued during the reporting period..."
"...In April 2009, at a district court in Nankana Sahib, Punjab, police cleared three men accused of raping a 13-year-old Christian girl despite eyewitness accounts and medical evidence... "
"...A March 2009 attack on a church and the surrounding neighborhood in Sangu-Wali, a village in Gujranwala, Punjab, left a woman dead. The attack was believed to be prompted after a Christian filed a robbery complaint against a local Muslim who, along with his friends, indiscriminately preyed on the community..."
"...Hindus faced societal violence, often directed at temples, during the reporting period..."
Etc., etc.
Now that she's free, how long before a pious Muslim takes the law into his own hands?
Trial? The Paki klukkers did the natural thing and blamed the first and likeliest person they saw. It´s a knee-jerk reaction in racist and fascist societies, she´s lucky to be alive and her family are well aware of it.
british India was given the best justice system. india still uses it. but he porkies have perverted this system into a mob rule justice and kangaroo courts. This is the result of sharia and endemic corruption. Pity the people who face these court criminals. Specially the infidals and women. billions of us aid and development had no effect on this.
Its just Islamic "justice".
A police official, requesting anonymity, said she was arrested to defuse the tension - but everyone forgot about her when she was sent to jail.
....................
"Arrested to defuse the tension"—in other words, the victim was persecuted by the law to appease a lawless mob.
Disturbingly, we are seeing this starting to happen in the West, as well. Peaceful anti-Jihad protesters have been arrested—or forcibly herded by the police—in London, in San Francisco, in Berlin, and elsewhere. Christians peacefully handing out literature in Dearborn, Michigan were arrested when their peaceful presence "disturbed" Muslims.
Mark Steyn and Geert Wilders are brought up on charges for doing nothing more than telling the truth—not in some benighted hole somewhere in Dar-al-Islam, but in Canada and the Netherlands—supposedly the freest of nations.
Things certainly are not as bad in the West as in horrible places like Pakistan—yet—but clearly the West is becoming more "Shari'ah compliant" all the time.
Cases like the horrendous travesty of justice suffered by Zaibun Nisa are likely to become all the more common.
U.S. law already makes government establishment of any one religion (e.g. favoring Islam/Sharia in policy) illegal, but it is up to the vigilant to exercise their rights and make sure laws are enforced. We need to oppose the encroaching Sharia law-friendly policies and Obama's Sharia (parallel at first) socialism. We need to write Congress (www.congress.org), join lobbying groups such as Act (www.actforamerica.org), and be willing to sue to enforce the law against subversives.
Pakistan's Third World justice, whose roots lie more in the Jurga's need curb the potential destruction that would be set loose by it's citizen's penchant for mob justice, sacrifices the few to quell the masses. Justice be damned.
No one missed her. She was a woman, a burden, mentally challenged, and unmarriageable. She was worthless to Pakistanis. She was fed by the state; no one had to bothered with her care.
She was just one more house-bound female under a burqa. When you are invisible to begin with, no one misses you when you're gone. This is why they are subhuman. Like wolves who push the omega female out of the pack to die alone.
I treat hijabed females as invisible, not there, until they try to prove to me otherwise that they are there.
You want to be invisible to men, you will be invisible to all of us. Subhuman, until you choose to join real free humans.
desidude
your comment re justice systems reminded me of this passage from V S Naipaul's "Among the Believers", in the section on Pakistan, the chapter entitled "The Disorder of the Law":
"Step by step out of its Islamic striving, Pakistan had undone the rule of law it had inherited from the British, and replaced it with nothing". END QUOTE.
One is tempted, when reading that sentence aloud, to pause for a count of three or four just before the word 'nothing', and then to say 'nothing' as if it were capitalised: 'Nothing'.
."and replaced it with...[pause]...Nothing".
Like 'the Nothing' that begins to devour the world of Fantastica, in Michael Ende's "The Never-Ending Story'" (did you ever see that film? - a fantasy for children, but the advance of the Nothing in Ende's book, a phenomenon terrifyingly visualised by the film-makers, reminds me horribly of Islam).
and? (before anyone starts whining about this being OT, Zulu posted OT twice already, and this post is semi related to the topic at hand unlike Zulu's)
India is a big threat to neighboring states- it militarly invaded and annexed goa from portugal
India invaded Sikkim and ousted the Tibetan Buddhist King, the Indian army outnumbered the Sikkimese army by like a 100 to one ratio, and destroyed their nation. ______________________________________________________________
http://www.nepalitimes.com/issue/35/Nation/9621
"King Palden Thondup Namgyal, the Chogyal of Sikkim was in his palace on the morning of 6 April, 1975 when the roar of army trucks climbing the steep streets of Gangtok brought him running to the window. There were Indian soldiers everywhere, they had surrounded the palace, and short rapid bursts of machine gun fire could be heard. Basanta Kumar Chhetri, a 19-year-old guard at the palace's main gate, was struck by a bullet and killed-the first casualty of the takeover. The 5,000-strong Indian force didn't take more than 30 minutes to subdue the palace guards who numbered only 243. By 12.45 it was all over, Sikkim ceased to exist as an independent kingdom.
Captured palace guards, hands raised high were packed into trucks and taken away, singing: "Dela sil, li gi, gang changka chibso" (may my country keep blooming like a flower). But by the, the Indian tri-colour had replaced the Sikkimese flag at the palace where the 12th king of the Namgyal dynasty was held prisoner. "The Chogyal was a great believer in India. He had huge respect for Mahatma Gnadhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Not in his wildest dreams did he think India would ever swallow up his kingdom," recalls Captain Sonam Yongda, the Chogyal's aide-de-camp. Nehru himself had told journalist Kuldip Nayar in 1960: "Taking a small country like Sikkim by force would be like shooting a fly with a rifle." Ironically it was Nehru's daughter Indira Gandhi who cited "national interest" to make Sikkim the 22nd state in the Indian union. "

India attacked a peaceful Tibetan buddhist kingdom, sikkim first by sending thousands of illegal nepalese hindu immigrants who outnumbered the native sikkimese budhists, outvoting them, and then cowardly invading them with superior force.
China gave pakistan the nuke technology for this reason, India's greedy territorial designs need to be checked, before they do "another" Goa or Sikkim like invasion of a neighboring state. otherwise India would try to bully pakistan like it did to Sikkim.
India is also a close benefactor of the Burmese dictatorship, both of them woorking together to crush Christian naga separatists.
also, during the 1962 war when China battled India (india was supported by Gulf Arab states like the UAE and by Egypt agaisnt China), Chinese forces managed to seize the entire northeast region of arunachal pradesh, but voluntarily withdrew after achieving victory.
Even before the Communists took over China, the Republic of China nationalist government (now on Taiwan), tried establishing alliances and consulates with Ismaili muslim tribal leaders in Kashmir to destabalize both the Indian and pakistan governments, and make kashmir independent from both, calling all muslims to war against india.
A Tibetan revolutionry, Pandatsang Rapga, knew of India's imperialist intentions, afer Rapga battled against the communists in Tibet and fled to India, he refused to give India any intel at all on Chinese forces, saying his mission was to modernize tibet and to help tibet only, not be a lackey of imperialists or the Dalai Lama.
Rapga opposed the Dalai Lama and his feudalist rule over Tibet. He was anti western imperialist and anti communist, since he was educated in the works of Chinese revolutionary Sun Zhongshan, and supported by the Republic of China (taiwan) regime, waging warfare against both the British puppet Dalai Lama, and against the Communist party.
He advocated for an autnonomous Tibetan Republic to be part of the Republic of china, like how Chechnya is now a Republic within Russia.
The Panchen Lama read his revolutionary works, and defected from the dalai lama british puppet, to the Republic of China government, working with Hui General Ma Bufang on a plan to liberate Tibet from the Dalai Lama and fight the communists.
May Kashmir, Tibet, Sikkim, Nagaland, and other oppressed peoples be free from the Satanic regimes.
Arunachal Pradesh is still considered by Republic of China (Taiwan), to be a part of the republic of china. One day, if Rapga's dream of the Tibetan Republic comes true, it will be.
India threatened Nepal- it demanded Nepal allow Indian troops to be stationed on Nepalese soil- Just like it invaded and annexed Sikkim

In response, the Nepalese violently attack the Indian ambassador whereever he goes-
http://www.telegraphnepal.com/headline/2011-04-22/india-raises-utl-unpaid-royalty-issue-meets-nepal-army-chief-but-why-.html
"Indian Military personnel be allowed to guard Nepal’s northern frontier with China, Nepal should be under India’s Security Umbrella, stationing of Indian Air Marshals at Tribhuwan International Airport, presence of Indian military officials at each and every districts of Nepal in the name Ex-Gurkha pension Camps and now a strange Indian proposal has come which is to permit India deploying its security machinery to guard embassy premises and their officials."
India- the self declared honest friend is apparently hell bent on destroying whatever image of Nepal remains in the comity of nations as a nation-state.
At a time when third country nationals feel more and more unsafe in the streets of Kathmandu due to frequently happening broad day light firing incidents with fatal casualties carried out by Indian state nurtured criminals who enter Nepal through the open border, Indian foreign minister S.M. Krishna claimed at the bilateral meeting held in Hotel Yak and Yeti upon his arrival that Nepal should allow his country to take care of its citizens in Nepal because they feel unsafe in Nepal.
“Wherever our Ambassador goes, he is shown Black Flags, shoes are hurled at him…where is the security”, asked Krishna at the meeting writes Nagarik Daily. “What about his erratic activities”, ask observers.
(krishna is foreign minister of India, he is saying nepalese attack the indian ambassador, the nepalese respond by noting india's imperialist activities)
Krishna must understand the fact that why the Ambassadors of other friendly countries do not receive similar treatments?
This is self explanatory. India needs to begin soul searching prior to making such erratic demands

Nepal needs to be given nuclear weapons ASAP by either Pakistan or China to protect against India, other wise we face Sikkim version 2.0, India's territorial greed for its neighbors territory goes unabated greedy, greedy, greedy thieves- it has half of kashmimr, manipur, assam, Goa, Sikkim, and wants Nepal as well?
as far as I can tell, Pakistan has not invaded a neighboring small country like sikkim or Goa, nor has it bullied a country like Nepal.
