Why on earth were soldiers being sent to fix a broken water pipe in the first place? Is Thailand trying to "nation build" like the US is?
Note to Thai War Department: The fundamental job of soldiers is to kill people and break stuff. Soldiers who are not actively engaged in the acts of killing people or breaking stuff should be vigorously supporting those who are. The side that kills the most people and breaks the most stuff is generally considered the victor. Next time you have problems with your country's plumbing, SEND A PLUMBER, NOT A SOLDIER!

Betcha the water pipe was deliberately damaged - baiting a trap for the ambush that then took place.
Nota bene - this happened on *Friday*, the Muslim 'holy' day. I wonder whether more jihad attacks take place on Fridays, especially Friday evenings after the Muslim Friday equivalent of the 'eight minute hate', than on other days of the week?
Observe also the passive voice employed by the reporter - 'a bomb explosion...killed three soldiers". Yeah, and that bomb walked there all by itself, and blew up all by itself, just as the three soldiers happened to be driving past?
Let's rewrite in the active voice, giving the likely human agent of the mayhem.
"In Yala province on Friday, the Muslim 'holy' day, jihadists detonated a roadside bomb to kill three soldiers in a pickup truck who had been sent to fix a water pipe in a village".
Another paragraph:
"More than 4,000 people have been killed in Thailand's three southernmost provinces since an Islamist insurgency erupted in 2004."
'Since jihad resumed in earnest in Thailand's three majority-Muslim southern provinces in 2004, 4000+ people have been killed, most of them by jihadist assassins".
Now let's have a look at the final three paragraphs, which I found by clicking on the link.

"Muslims, as they always do when living within any majority non-Muslim polity where they are not the acknowledged legal, political and social superiors of non-Muslims, complain of 'discrimination'.
"The jihadists in the south are fighting to carve out a sharia state ruled by and for Muslims."
"They attack the representatives of the non-Muslim state, including soldiers, civil servants, and business-people, but also attack and kill schoolteachers, plantation workers and Buddhist monks".
