Two-thirds of British people would support a ban on Muslim women wearing face-covering veils in public, similar to the one approved by French lawmakers this week, a poll has found.An online survey of 2,205 adults for Five News television found 67 per cent of respondents agreed that the burka - the full-face veil - should be banned.
That figure rose to 80 per cent among people aged over 55.
The YouGov poll was carried out between Wednesday and Friday (local time), after France's lower house of parliament voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to ban full Islamic veils in public spaces.
Similar laws are pending in Belgium, Spain and some Italian municipalities, but the ban is particularly sensitive in France, whose rundown city suburbs are home to Europe's biggest Muslim minority.
A Harris poll for the Financial Times in March revealed Britons were among the most tolerant in Europe towards the Islamic veil, with just 57 per cent backing a ban, compared to 70 per cent in France and 65 per cent in Spain....
Wantin' ain't gettin' often times unless you're prepared to fight for what you want. Is the bulk of the British population still prepared to fight, I mean vehemently oppose in sundry ways, the twin idiocies of modern political correctness and multiculturalism, which are the root causes of Islam continuing to be exculpated by the British elites (this would include the pathetic Prince of Wales)? Yeah, and probably nine-tenths of those wearing the Islamic veil want the British people banned. At present it looks like they're close to getting their way than the 2/3 of Brits.
Also note the line:

hinting at the old "the problem is poverty and exclusion from the mainstream" line.
In fact, it's slum-dwellers who create the slum, not vice-versa. If the suburbs are rundown, it's because they're full of Moslems who have run them down.

The situation is going to go to BITS: Blood In The Streets. I predict a series of civil wars that will be, at first, considered relatively minor community "uprisings," initiated by the Mohammadans for what ever "slight," but will soon spread and boil over as the populace sees the government forces seemingly siding with the Mo's. Then at some point, the violence will become so extreme, or, perhaps, something or someone famous will become a victim, and then everything will start to change. The (not really in command) "leading" Mo's will wish they had not facilitated allowing the genie out of the bottle prematurely, for their escalating violence will now be turned against them. The youth of their "forces," enraged and largely uncontrollable, will become a liablility because they will be taking their orders from Islamic doctrine, not from any real "leaders." They'll have bats and stones and molotov cocktails (in addition to some modern weapons) but they'll be heavily outmatched by various government forces, and public opinion, heretofore PC/MC, will shift away and the Mo's will be recognized as the highly-undesirable and violent seditionists that they are. That's when we'll finally see tens of thousands of "moderate" Muslims taking to the streets to distance themselves from the "radicals." They will be in fear for their very lives at this point.
The question then will be: will that be accepted? If it's not, then expect Islam and Muslims to be a new "suspected" class. Their mosques and communities will be rigorously monitored and Muslims will be marginalized. Many will leave, and many more will simply not emigrate to the west, or will not be allowed to. Any further protests or violence at this point will be met with firm force, and not with the "tacit approval" that we see today.
If, however, the "moderates" suddenly-very-vocal supplications are accepted, then just hit the "reset" button and start the process all over again.
It could go on forever in 25-50 year cycles, until either the Mo's give up or finally outbreed us and take over.
Well, that's my prediciton, for what it's worth.

The poll looks statistically dubious to me. The sampling method (online sampling only) looks biased, not to mention the sample size seems awfully small to be able to draw any definite conclusions.
Two thirds of Britons also want all Muslim immigration stopped and repatriation of failed asylum seekers and convicted terrorists deported but that's not going to happen either.
Because of its unusually soft-headed political and, especially, media elites, Great Britain is more likely to succumb than France, a country where knowledge of and pride in French history, the French language, French thought, is still present (and a good educational system is the mightiest bulwark against Islam) or other countries on the Continent. Look at the BBC. Look at The Guardian. And the power of Arab money, at the top of the social heap, with so many, including former diplomats, in bed with Arabs and their money that is all over the posher parts of London (not to mention Plantagenet hunting lodges owned by the likes of Prince Bandar, spreading the wealth around with a smile) and these, along with the anti-Israel left, in reinforcing a false understanding of the Muslim war on Israel (misrepresenting it as "two tiny peoples" etc. with the factitious "Palestinians" as the victims, when it is Israel that for its entire life, and forever, will have to fight off those conducting the permanent Jihad against it), and therefore a false understanding of what Islam inculcates, what it means for Infidels everywhere, including, of course, the imperiled, and as-yet too heedless, Infidels of Great Britain.
The desire to ban the face veil is no less preposterous than the desire to ban all swastika insignias on clothing of German Nazis in 1943 -- but to leave the millions of German Nazis behind our enemy lines otherwise untouched.

whenever is see a 5 or 6 year old girl with a dead covering, i wonder who see a small child as sexually tempting. then i remember the founder of islam would and that his followers emulate him....
personally i'm offended everytime i have to see a covered woman because it is saying men cannot control their lusts.... it is rude an offensive to all the civilised men that can look at a woman and not want to rape her. it also suggests moslem men have no self control and are rapists waiting for a chance... i find that concept offensive too.

Maruani, from MEMRI, the Middle East Media Research Institute (Inquiry and Analysis, No. 533, July 7 2009), summarising the work of Iranian-French female writer Chahdortt Djavann, who has argued very strongly for banning the Islamic veil in Europe (indeed, Mme Djavann wrote a book called 'A Bas Le Voile', 'Off With the Veil').

Maruani cites the following statements by Djavann: "The veil has never been innocent or innocuous. It has always signified the submission of women to men and the denial of legal rights to women in Islamic countries."...
"The political, ideological and psychological impact of the veil goes far beyond its appearance...If this weren't the case, why would the Islamists make it their main focus?...It constitutes a constant call to order by Islamic law".

Djavann also analyzes the social and psychological damage caused by the veil, saying that it denies women a normal social life because it reduces them to sexual objects. Wearing the veil only "points to what the veil is hiding... It hides what no one might look at if it were not hidden..."
As the Islamist system covers women's heads, it only sees them as genitals, Djavann argues. Hence she calls the veil "pornographic on the symbolic level.
"DJAVANN ESPECIALLY condemns the veiling of little girls, calling it abuse because it makes them internalize at an early age that they should be ashamed:
"Don't we hide what we are ashamed of?... Since childhood, these veiled girls feel guilty..."
