He and six others were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause an explosion at a Bournemouth mosque.
All seven, including at least six EDL members, have since been released without charge.
Armed officers pounced from an unmarked car close to the Norden roundabout as 27-year-old Mr Broomfield, from Swanage, drove home from work around 5pm.
They used special rapid tyre deflation rounds, fired from a shotgun, to disable his vehicle.
Officers, including specialised forensic experts, then swooped on his Bell Street home, removing clothes, computer equipment, mobile phones and passports.
The suspects were held at Poole police station and a police station in Southampton, following last Thursday's arrests.
The English Defence League is a contentious group that has been leading "anti-Muslim extremism" demonstrations around England since 2009.
Thousands of people have attended its protests - many of which have involved racist and Islamophobic chanting.
However, organisers insist it is not a racist organisation.
A number of violent clashes have also taken place at EDL demonstrations since the group first emerged in Luton last year.
In a statement to the Daily Echo, Mr Broomfield said: "While travelling home from work I was stopped and arrested by armed police. I was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause an explosion at a Bournemouth mosque.
"Five other members of the EDL were also arrested and held for 24 hours for questioning while searches of their homes took place. Then all of us were released without charge.
"There has been no conspiracy.
"There has never been any conspiracy. The EDL is not a terrorist organisation."
A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "Dorset Police can confirm that as part of an investigation surrounding threats to a Bournemouth mosque a total of seven people were arrested for conspiracy to cause an explosion.
"Following an investigation police can now confirm these people have been released without charge....
"We've been working very closely with the Muslim community since last Thursday and our local safer neighbourhood teams have been providing advice and reassurance throughout.
"At this stage there is no indication whatsoever that any of the mosques in Dorset are under threat of attack."
It's a funny thing in Western countries: when non-Muslims are (falsely) suspected of plotting to harm Muslims, non-Muslim authorities work to reassure the Muslim community. When Muslims kill non-Muslims, non-Muslim authorities work to reassure the Muslim community.

This is *terrifying*. Police—in a sane, democratic society, at any rate—only use tactics like this if someone is fleeing the police, or known to be armed and dangerous—Mr. Broomfield was neither.

No, indeed. And yet, there will be people who will just dimly remember that the EDL was suspected in a plot to bomb a mosque, or even assume that the police *foiled* an EDL plot to bomb a mosque.
It's not just that EDL members have been frightened and inconvenienced by these police actions—they have had their good reputation deeply damaged, as well.
This will make many people leery about joining with the EDL—either because they don't want to be targeted by the police themselves, or—worse—because they will now assume that the EDL is a 'racist', 'Islamophobic', and *terrorist* organization.

No surprise. During the election campaign David Cameron described the EDL as "dreadful people" and said the organization would "always be under review".
Also, it should be noted that David Cameron is a supporter of United Against Fascism (an organization that opposes free speech).
It is being made very clear that the muslim community are the victims of some very bad far-right fascist hooligan terrorists. Thereby justifying the very harsh methods employed by armed police. There´s never smoke without a fire, hey?
What I do not understand then is why they are released without charge, and that after all no mosque is being threatened. But hey! Well said Hugh, another tactic would be to label all these muslims that protest and lie about the EDL, "radical muslims." As soon as they get stuck with that label, its very hard for them to get away with anything.
If anything war serves to separate the weak from the strong-not just physically but mentally also. This 'challenge' is what the muslims have brought to the West. However the media overdo it with the "far-right" business; they need to come up with some other expressions. It's as though Homer referred to all the gods as far-darting.
This is nothing more than a naked attempt by the Muslims and their obedient police dogs to sully the name of EDL. It’s not enough to call them racists or islamaphobes. A lot of people can see through these attempts. No, they really want to name them as right wing terrorists. I wouldn’t be surprised if they execute a plan to frame the EDL with makeshift bombs placed around mosques. It is perhaps significant that at the end of the Bournemouth Daily Echo report it says: "We're sorry that we can't allow comments on this story today for staffing reasons". Is that because the staff are too busy "working very closely with the Muslim community" ? A very depressing tale.

It's obvious that the government & muslim groups (MDL) are out to damage the reputation of the EDL and they are succeeding.
I think the EDL needs to take a step back and spend some time on PR.
They need to take a lesson from the most devious group on the planet whose methods will teach them how to defeat the invaders & useful idiots, first in eye of the public then on the ground.
Right now most people link the EDL to riots & police arrests, but they are not getting the true picture. Every time the EDL gather they are being set up by the government , the muslims & the police and it's leaving a bad taste in the mouth of most Brits.

This has the foul odor of HARRASSMENT all over it.
Did the gendarmes have probable-cause to arrest Mr. Broomfield? Based-on what evidence and provided by whom? Why the use of excessive force? He's driving home from work, following his daily routine. And they shoot his tires flat with SHOTGUNS? How about just pulling him over? And then it turns-out they have nothing--NOTHING--on ANY of them and release them without charge after 24 hours of questioning and search? It's all just a little too neat-and-tidy to be legitimate or even credible.
So, it's pretty clear that Mr. Broomfield was targeted, due to his EDL ties, for state-sponsored, muslim-incited legal terrorism and character-assassination. If it were not so, the cops would come down on those false-tipsters like an anvil. This charade was a message--a message that the authorities will do the "muslim community's" light-work. I have always supported what the EDL is doing, and now more than ever they need any support they can get.
