GRENOBLE, France (AFP) - Rioters exchanged gunfire with police in the French city of Grenoble early Saturday, setting fire to shops and cars after police shot dead a man accused of robbing a casino.
Youths torched between 50 and 60 cars in the southeastern French city, as well as construction equipment and two shops, while police said they made five arrests.
Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux was to visit the city Saturday afternoon, his ministry said.
The rioting started after a memorial service for 27-year-old Karim Boudouda, who died 24 hours earlier in a shootout with police after allegedly holding up the Uriage-les-Bains casino near Grenoble.
Shortly before midnight, a group of around 30 youths armed with baseball bats and iron bars attacked a tram in Boudouda's working class district of La Villeneuve and forced the passengers to get out.
Police intervened to protect the passengers, and the youths began torching vehicles and attacking police who responded with tear gas.
At around 2:30 am (0030 GMT), a youth emerged at the front of the rioters and fired a shot at police, who returned fire four times, police spokeswoman Brigette Jullien told AFP.

Six pedestrians were injured, three seriously, when they were struck by a car in the West Midlands.
The ambulance service was called to the junction of King Street and Stafford Street, Dudley, at 1605 BST.
Three men, aged 42, 37 and 32 suffered head injuries. The 37-year-old also broke his leg.
Three others, including a girl aged 16 whose leg was broken, also needed hospital treatment.
An 18-year-old man suffered a foot injury and a 19-year-old man has a suspected broken leg, the West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

There are a few things not mentioned here.
l went to the harrier pub with 2 lads l know and trust
we got split up and 2 of us got on a POLICE coach and were taken to demo site.
We were PROMISED by the police that we would be taken by coach back to the pick up point.
The demo was a shambles with constant attacks on the barriers and the police.
When the demonstrators dispersed we were told to wait for another POLICE coach to take us back,
so we waited, and waited, and waited.
Then we were told to make our own way to the bus station and wait for a bus.
NO POLICE ESCORT OR ANY PROTECTION AT ALL.
So we did, we walked all the way to the bus station to be met by 300+ asians all prepared for battle.
So we retreated all the way back up the high street, just 3 of us with no idea of where we were,
not a clue.
l called the guy who gave us a lift to the harrier, he'd had fun too
He never made the demo as he and 300 others had been given the run around by the police.
He'd only just made it back to the pub after a few violent encouters.
He agreed to drive over and pick us up.....
BY this time we had been attacked by 35+ muslim youth ( 11+ to 1 good odds eh?)
We retreated to the nearest police we could see who just couldn't care less!!!
They forced us down the road to another muslim gang while loads more came up another road at us.
Thing by this time looked very bleak and we all knew we were in danger of our lives.
We went back to the police and were being treated very aggressively when our lift turned up.
We got out of there by the skin of our teeth.
We went back to the harrier and heard the sad news that someone had been killed.
l'm surprised the body count is only 1 so far.
l'm at home now realising how close the 3 of us came to being butchered 4 including our saviour.
That man deserves a lot of respect knowingly going into a very dangerous place to rescue us.

Checking the EDL site and word is that it was pretty bad in Dudley today. The words "horrible","disaster" and "shambles" are being used. Somebody did get run over but NO deaths reported so far. A lot of confusion. Reports that there were either infiltrators or people who were not EDL but just showed up. Apparently the "Asians" instead of staying with their UAF group which could be controlled by police, broke up and were attacking in smaller gangs. The West Midlands Police are not getting good reviews at this point. I hope that's not shades of Dearbornistan. (If anyone was there, what is the story with the "stripper"?)
The local Stourbridge News also contrives to give the impression that the EDL were responsible for the violence.

Interestingly enough they mention EDL members needing treatment for head injuries but give no indication of how these injuries were received. They also refer to the "traffic incident" mentioned on the BBC website.

The people, five men and a women, ranging in age from 16 years-old to 45, were taken to hospital for further treatment. None of them had life threatening injuries.

So they're trying to suggest that a family car caught up in a group of protestors managed to injure six people so that they needed hospital treatment, just while trying to work its way clear. I know there are some poor drivers in the West Midlands area but to run down six people takes exceptional incompetence, unless of course it was done deliberately. I wonder if the driver of the car could have been called Mohammed, by any chance.
Looking at the news about Dudley....not one report\blog\news item in favour of the EDL.
This is my attempt to make some cultural and historical sense of what goes on in the area. Most of it has to do with Sandwell, not Dudley, but I think close enough in culture to make sense of what we see today. Lots of links to very long pieces. I am a very peaceful person and want to apologise to you if you were deliberately hurt. Equally I want to sympathise if you were hurt accidently and to any EDL members who were deliberately looking for trouble - I have nothing to say to you.
What I will say though is that there are dull periods of history where nothing much happens (like the 60s)and there are those where fundamental changes are likely to take place.
Indeed you are lucky to see fundamental changes in the West over the next two decades. Imagine how the Indian or the African felt when (200 years ago) he saw the British walk into their town, built clubs and cantonements and then subjected the locals to serve them - imagine if you will that the Indian and 10 of his subsequent generations were subjected to the same colonism/occupation call it what you will.
Ofcourse you see this and say "we were the superior power with the more advanced weaponery and we even introduced christianinty to those poor (Masih surnamed) beggers now in Pakistan.

And as far as your complaints about 'the West' occupying your countries and destroying them are concerned: what about the thousands of miles of railways built, irrigation systems installed, veterinary services set up to improve the health and quality of livestock, a quantum leap in technology brought by the West, and so on.
