This is a great news, some of the best news I read for a long time. We got to win this case!
I strongly support your efforts to block the Ground Zero mosque, but I expected the ruling made by the Landmarks Commission. With public officials involved, if this becomes a contest between respecting the feelings of family members of the victims versus being open to other minority religions, the second position will win every time among nearly all public officials. Pam Geller appeals to people's feelings, and that is why she is invited on TV so frequently. (TV producers feel she helps create an emotional drama that makes good television.) Robert Spencer (when he was appearing on TV in the past) came out with such strong, clear, indisputable facts that television producers quickly realized that nobody could defeat him, so it appears they stopped inviting him on TV programs. It is easier for them to label him as an Islamophobe and to deny him airtime altogether, thus appearing to be part of the moderate, reasonable, open-minded, and tolerant mainstream.
It would have been very hard for the Landmarks Commission to rule in any other way, since there were so many buildings that were hit with fragments of the September 11 airplanes, and there was not anything particularly special about that building. They concluded that the landmark status issue was being improperly used to try to suppress a particular religion. I do not think that the efforts by the ACLJ will be effective, because the court will be in the same position as the Commission.
The only way this battle will be won is to make it a competition between facts and freedom of speech on the one hand and distortions, lies, and suppression of free speech on the other hand. Here are my suggestions, to whatever extent you find them helpful.
First, if there is sufficient revenue available (and I think a national fund could easily be set up), large advertisements should be taken out in prominent publications (to whatever extent permitted or compelled by law) in which the key facts about the Islamic religion are clearly laid out, WITH AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM (MEANING ZERO) OF ADJECTIVES, DESCRIPTIONS, PARAPHRASING, SARCASM, OR NAME-CALLING. Any hint of such tendencies will be self-defeating, since it will confirm in the reader's mind that the authors are biased. The facts should be direct quotes from Islamic texts, or from sharia law imposed in other countries. No Western scholar should be quoted, because the immediate implication will be that the Western scholar is biased. (Let the other side engage in name calling, sarcasm, etc.)
Second, I suggest that Mr. Spencer develop a very brief (presentable in two to five minutes) summary of "talking points" about Islam, and post that summary on his website (in an easily printable form). That summary should be widely distributed, perhaps in postcard form. It might include facts such as there are 150 verses in the Koran inciting violent jihad, their prophet started having sex with a girl when she was nine, their prophet had sex with a woman on the same day that he killed her father, brother, and other relatives, their prophet personally murdered over 800 Jews who had been captured, etc. Their prophet is considered to be the perfect human being. The hundreds or perhaps thousands of Islamic clergy who are members of the Pakistani Ulema Council gave Osama bin Laden their highest honor in June 2007. Name all the countries where criticizing the prophet or the Koran can result in a death sentence, etc. Every single fact must be cited to an undisputable Islamic source.
Once New Yorkers are flooded with the facts, it will be possible to argue that the so-called peaceful interfaith Islamic Center will, with 100% probability, promulgate at least some ideas that are consistent with the ideas in Mr. Spencer's summary. On that basis, it will be possible to argue that since the Islamic Center will necessarily support the very ideology that killed 3000 people, New Yorkers should make whatever efforts are necessary to prevent construction of the Ground Zero mosque.

One more small point. Although I respect Mr. Wilders for his courage, and he is technically correct in saying that the Koran is hate speech and incites violence, when he goes so far as to ask for the banning of the Koran (which is impossible no matter how you look at it), he appears to be a fanatic.
Anybody who fully supports him then can also be labeled as a fanatic. I think it is possible to support Wilders in many respects, while stating that the Koran should not be banned but rather should be fully understood.

My sister-in-law mentioned that she would like to go with me on 9/11 up to the protest in NYC. I've been telling my family about this for seven years now and they are finally on board. As I understand it, Arthur, Wilders is reacting to Dutch law which bans a hateful work like Mein Kampf, and so Wilders has reasoned that if Dutch law can ban Mein Kampf, which is full of venom and vitriol, then, to be consistent, the Koran should also be banned because of its many hateful, highly intolerant comments. Wilders is making a point rather than engaging in any suppression of speech for its own sake. Perhaps Demsci or someone else who is Dutch can add to this.

We really need to protest and hold a respectful but massive demonstration outside the courthouse when ACLJ case verdict / ruling is heard to let the world know that America is against this Isamo-supremacist mosque building on ground zero. Think its practical? Any suggestions?
Fortunately the battle isn't lost yet. I only hope civilisation will prevail. I think, there are too many people who are feeling offended by this monster-mega-mosque, so it won't be built. But the fight goes on, every victory is only a milestone, it's a never ending story.

The moderators appear to be systematically deleting all comments that are even mildly critical of Bloomberg, leaving the field to Leftists and their snarky swipes against "teabaggers" and "bigots" and moral equivalence arguments involving Timothy McVeigh, to be followed by supportive comments and high-fives on the brilliance of the comment. I even made several attempts to post a query to see if other readers might have noticed biased moderating, but they, too, were deleted.
I've had comments on HuffPo deleted before, but this is the most outrageous censorship that I have ever encountered on that site.

I am heartened by the number of prominent pundits and politicians who are coming out against this abomination. Newt Gingrich finally gets it! In the last two days, I have heard radio talk show hosts who just a few months ago were still stuck on 'a peaceful religion hijacked by a few fanatics' spell out the motives for this mosque like they were reading an article by Robert Spencer! It's amazing! Neal Boortz explained taquiya, Cordoba, and quoted some of islam's more damning suras on the radio today. He has stubbornly hung on to the 'moderate' and 'radical' labels for muslims until now. I am delighted to see that so many have finally seen the truth about islam. Even Joe Lieberman has concerns. Now maybe Huckabee will do his homework and stop calling islam a 'great' religion.
Even if the mosque isn't stopped, and I pray that it will be, people are finally waking up to the evil of islam. That is good news.

Well, Wellington, you are in my opinion absolutely correct explaining Geert Wilders' reasoning about how to respond to the Quran.
But I read Arthur's post and found it very apposite. He proposes to effectively inform the public of the facts of Islam I, II, III. These are the categories introduced by Ibn Warraq. And I + II are the texts and the official interpretations so to speak. Nr III is the overall interpretation and implication in practice all around the world.
Arthur proposes to state the facts about this in a logical "respectful" and effective way, informing "the world".
Now, opponents in politics and media use everything Wilders utters against him. Yesterday night opponent Alexander Pechtold (Democrats '66) showed a medium-sized book of quotes from Wilders through the years! Unfavorably use intended you can be sure!
People like Arthur argue, I think, to fight more effective. To formulate policies in a way that they cannot be easily used against you by dishonest or simple-minded opponents who twist what you're saying to their advantage and thus of that of the Muslims.
I thought Arthurs post was inspiring, but wanted to add that in my opinion it is not just the facts about Islam (I, II, III) that should be flooded to the Western Democratic citizens. They already trickle down a lot. But people shrug and you know; play culture-relativism and tu quoque with them, rather careless and immune to the Islam-knowledge.
Perhaps if we juxtapose Islam with the parts of Democratic theory, laws, values and those of UN-Declaration of Human Rights that contradict with Islam we'll influence better.
And we can do it with respect to the Muslims and their inculcated, dearly beloved preferences, merely pointing out the huge incompatibility of the 2 thought- and organisation-systems.
We could conclude that, with all due respect, Muslims and Democratically minded people should part ways, live in their respective countries, no hard feelings then.
If Muslims still want to live in Democratic countries, then let them swear utmost loyalty to Democracy's essences, over and above Islam's essences when the 2 contradict, and let them be checked on that in their subsequent overall declarations and behavior.
And I want to add that a new way of looking at Islam, in a very informed way, could perhaps become a part of the policies of other parties than the PVV, especially the CDA and D'66, reputedly in Holland considered Right-wing or Center.
As the leftist parties seem not much inclined to do anything in their mind detrimental to Muslims, due to the strange phenomenom of the de facto alliance between the Left and the Muslims, visible in many situations and on many occasions.
But CDA lost half it's voters, most of them to the PVV and the VVD, also firm on Islam, only less than the PVV. And CDA always emphasizes how important respect for Muslims is and CDA condemns the PVV on: Polarising, stigmatizing, discrimination, freedom of religion and such.
But based on extensive information about both Democracy (they know this inside out) and Islam (this they seem to know not so well or in all its variations and intentions worldwide) they can rethink and formulate a new policy concerning both Democracy and Islam.
And it CAN be respectful to Muslims, yet defending Democracy much better. And they can thus try to win votes back. Because if they wish to compete well with the PVV, the most effective way to do it might be to adjust their Islam-policies. In many people's opinion the PVV has no other strong merits, and no other ideological vote-magnet-power in the long run.
Any way, it now looks almost certain the VVD and CDA will form a government in Holland with the support of the PVV in parliament. And that already must mean a change in Islam-policy for CDA, in their compromises with these other parties.

Commentators in other web sites are now willing to concede that "Moderate Islam" is largely a myth, that the Mosque will be a supremacist victory monument, that Muslims as they immigrate into the West seek to change the West not co-exist with it, etc. but So what? They bought the old building and have a First Amendment right to build a mosque there, so there's no legal or political basis to interfere with Park 51. All those other points might be true but are irrelevant as are the concerns of the 9/11 families.
