Why is New York City throwing roadblocks in front of the rebuilding of a church that stood for decades at the site now known as Ground Zero, while moving heaven and earth to clear away all obstacles to building an Islamic supremacist mega-mosque there?

The battle raging over the Ground Zero mosque is bringing new attention to another, less publicized controversy involving a house of worship in Lower Manhattan.St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which once sat right across the street from the World Trade Center, was crushed under the weight of the collapse of Tower Two on September 11, 2001. St. Nicholas was the only church to be lost in the attacks, and nine years later, while City of New York officials are busy removing every impediment to the building of the Cordoba mosque two blocks from the site, St. Nicholas' future remains unclear.
The last bit of hopeful news for St. Nicholas came two years ago, in July 2008, when church officials and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced a deal which would have allowed the church to be rebuilt about two blocks from its original location.
The Port Authority agreed to give the church a parcel of land at Liberty and Greenwich Streets, and contribute $20 million toward construction of a new sanctuary. The Port Authority also agreed to build an explosion-proof platform and foundation for the new church building, which would sit on top of a screening area for cars and trucks entering the underground garages at the new World Trade Center.
Trouble emerged after St. Nicholas announced its plans to build a traditional Greek Orthodox church building, 24,000 square feet in size, topped with a grand dome. Port Authority officials told the church to cut back the size of the building and the height of the proposed dome, limiting it to rising no higher than the World Trade Center memorial. The deal fell apart for goodin March 2009, when the Port Authority abruptly ended the talks after refusing to allow church officials to review plans for the garage and screening area underneath. Sixteen months later, the two sides have still not met to resume negotiations.
St. Nicholas Church's difficulty in getting approvals to rebuild stands in stark contrast to the treatment that the developers of the proposed Cordoba mosque have received. New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, state Atty. Gen. Andrew Cuomo, and a raft of city officials have all come out publicly in favor of building the mosque, and the city's Landmarks and Preservation Commission recently voted unanimously to deny protection to the building currently occupying the site where the mosque is to be built.
The mosque is proposed to rise 13 stories, far above the height of the World Trade Center memorial, with no height restrictions imposed....
Don't you see, there is no opportunity for city officials to prove to themselves how un-bigoted they are by moving a Greek Orthodox Church forward. Because Greek Orthodox are not a sacred minority like those helpless, cuddly Muslims.

HOWEVER, the Church was crushed on 9/11 and so it should be rebuilt on its' original site which I presume is owned by the Greek Orthodox Church. Why isn't it?

This *is* a joke, Hershi—but it's a good one. This is the guy from the FOX News humor show "Red Eye". My favorite "proposed" names for the venue were "You Mecca Me Hot" and "Suspicious Packages"—which is brilliant.

My absolute favorite thing about this, though, is not the joke itself, but the *actual* response they got when they sent the "proposal" to the Cordoba Mosque people:

This is grimly hilarious in so many ways. Certainly, flattening sweet little Saint Nicholas church nine years ago did so much to build just the sort of "dialogue" they are looking for.
Considering a lot of the big shot politicos in NYC are either Democrats or Liberal Jews it doesn't surprise me they aren't letting the orthodox church be rebuilt. These people tend to be generally anti-Christian if not virulently so.
Islam though is a different story. For most liberals Islam is a fine a acceptable alternative to Christianity. So what if they indulge in honor killings, FGM, wife beating, beating and killing non-believers(especially Jews) and apostates.

Lots of land has been put aside all across Denmark for mosques, lots of prime plots and even for free and gratis. And plans have been drawn up, domes and minarets and everything.
However, when it comes to the actual construction of the thing there´s always an abrupt halt to the proceedings: no money.
Only the Shia group directly sponsored by ...erm well-to-do citizens in Iran has recently managed to overcome this obstacle, and plans for a mosque and center seem to be more than just plans for once.
The Iranian state is very actively supporting Shia everywhere, in Muslim as well as non-Muslim countries through state-sponsored and controlled charities and institutions. Morocco has even broken off diplomatic relations with Iran in protest, Jordan has forbidden the activities, not least because the Revolutionary Guard is activity promoting such "private" charites.

I just know that he will do this to put the lie to rest about double-standards by Islam not reciprocating. After all is he not an honorable man to paraphrase William Shakespeare?

Correct me if I am wrong but don't these countries hate Sufis? Who ever heard of Saudis funding Sufi mosques. They prefer to destroy them. Therefore there is no way that Imam Rauf is a Sufi. Sounds like more taqiyyah to me to lull to sleep the naive such as Mayor Bloomberg.

Was it that she chose that day to be born, and he was therefore with you in the labor ward rather than trotting off to work as usual, or was it that instead of being at work he was home with you on 'parental leave' helping take care of the brand-new newborn?
Way back in 2001 I do remember reading about a New York couple one or both of whom would have been in the death zone above the impact point, had their baby not decided to choose just that day, early in the morning, to begin her journey into this world... thus ensuring that both parents were safely in the hospital rather than at the WTC.
One would not be surprised if such a life-saving baby were called 'Zoe' or 'Eve'/ Chava, or 'Grace'.

Perhaps the Greek Orthodox are being punished for all their violent crimes against the West. I can't even count the number of Greek or Ukrainian planes that have crashed into buildings! How many Patriarchs have been quoted as saying they won't rest until they drive the Vatican into the sea?
Sarcasm aside: at least the St. Nicholas community is striving and not giving in. If it were a Catholic (I am) or Protestant community, they would probably GIVE their site to the Muslims as a gesture of openness and dialogue.

Today is the Feast of St. Clare of Assisi on the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar. She had her own run in with the world war known as jihad and, it seems, these Saracens had their stupid dhimmi enabler in Emperor Freddie the Second. Her prayer at the end of the following two paragraphs is one Catholics and other Christians at this site might think of praying for the poor "homeless" parishioners of St. Nicholas and for all those New Yorkers who are fighting this obscene mega mosque. Don't be as dumb as Emperor Frederick; be as courageous as St. Clare!

Haven't the dhimmis at the Port Authority and City of New Youk given the St. Nicholas congregation more than enough ammunition for a classic religious discrimination lawsuit based upon the vastly disparate treatment they have received compared to the Muslims at Park 51? Don't they also have claims under state and federal law for violations of their civil rights?
Why isn't there a lawsuit against the City of New York on behalf of the church asking for equal treatment ? They have a compelling case and the 5:4 split in the Supreme Court would work in their favor should it go that far .
Besides , it would put the breaks on the mosque until it's settled.
A lawsuit by the Church seeking damages for religious discrimination by the city would not necessarily put the brakes on the mosque project. If a court finds that someone has been the victim of discrimination, the remedy is to put the person discriminated against in the same position as the person who was not discriminated against not the other way around. Therefore, if the Church proves that it was discriminated against, the result would more likely be an order that the Church project be allowed to proceed rather than an order that the mosque construction be stopped.

Is it possible, with a well coordinated interfaith effort, to provide the necessary funds? This may already be under way but I thought worth mentioning.
Christians of all traditions, from the USA and from all over the world, joined by all who defy the Jihad and reject sharia, should unite to see that this church, St Nicholas's Greek Orthodox Church, is rebuilt - bigger and more beautiful, though perhaps in a design that lovingly nods to the form of the original. It should have a *tall* bell-tower and a splendid ring of bells, and be surrounded by a lovely peaceful garden courtyard.
The best icon-painters, from within the USA, from Russia, from Greece, from other Orthodox communities world-wide, should be invited to adorn its interior. America's oldest Orthodox community, the Aleut Christians who were converted by a Russian Orthodox missionary priest, could be asked to contribute.
Besides icons, let's have some mosaics, just like at Ravenna and Hagia Sophia.
It should become one of the most beautiful things in the USA; colourful and joyful and filled with light and music and incense; a new treasure for New York City, and a deeply spiritual place where those who mourn can come to remember their dead. Some of the bodies of the dead actually fell within St Nicholas' hallowed ground before the towers came down; perhaps it may give some comfort to their families to think that their loved ones passed into eternity *there*.
The best and most in-your-face way to defy the Muslims is to rebuild *a church*, *this* church. Even if they get their mosque at the Burlington Coat Factory site, fact is that St Nicholas's is *closer*. St Nicholas's *must* be built. I am sure that all the Muslims are secretly gloating over the fact that as well as destroying the Towers, and human-sacrificing so many, many non-Muslims to the blood-god allah, the jihad raiders succeeded in flattening a *Greek Orthodox* church. Spoil their perceived victory; rebuild precisely that church which they destroyed.
Anybody reading this got the 'contacts' to organise a fund-raising performance of Britten's St Nicholas Cantata? - proceeds to go to St Nicholas's Congregation building fund. Either in the open air, right next to the old or the proposed new site of the church; or else within its sister 'Ground Zero' church, St Paul's (Episcopal) Chapel.
Our president is as almost as quick to defend this mosque as he is to throw Christianity under the bus whenever the opportunity presents itself. Isn't it sad that the president who used to believe the Constitution promised freedom FROM religion is now preaching that the mosque must be built because the Constitution guarantees freedom OF religion. I'd love to read the fine print on that one.
