Iranian supremo: "Although music is halal, promoting and teaching it is not compatible with the highest values of the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic"

Whenever I have pointed out that Islam generally views music negatively and that some schools of Islamic law even ban it outright, I get called an "Islamophobe" -- so I guess Khameni is an "Islamophobe" as well.

There Is No Fun In Islam* Update from the Islamic Republic: "Music fails to chime with Islamic values, says Iran's supreme leader," by Saeed Kamali Dehghan in The Guardian, August 2 (thanks to all who sent this in):

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said today that music is "not compatible" with the values of the Islamic republic, and should not be practised or taught in the country.

In some of the most extreme comments by a senior regime figure since the 1979 revolution, Khamenei said: "Although music is halal, promoting and teaching it is not compatible with the highest values of the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic."

Khamenei's comments came in response to a request for a ruling by a 21-year-old follower of his, who was thinking of starting music lessons, but wanted to know if they were acceptable according to Islam, the semi-official Fars news agency reported. "It's better that our dear youth spend their valuable time in learning science and essential and useful skills and fill their time with sport and healthy recreations instead of music," he said.

Unlike other clerics in Iran, whose religious rulings are practised by their own followers, Khamenei's views are interpreted as administrative orders for the whole country, which must be obeyed by the government. Last month Khamenei issued a controversial fatwa in which he likened his leadership to that of the Prophet Muhammad and obliged all Iranians to obey his orders.

Khamenei has rarely expressed his views on music publicly, but he is believed have played a key role in the crackdown on Iran's music scene following the revolution. When Khamenei was president, he banned western-style music, forcing many stars to go into exile.

Houshang Asadi, a former cellmate of Khamenei before the Islamic Revolution said: "He hated the music from the beginning."

"There were times I sang a song by Banan (a popular vocalist) for him and he told me to avoid music and instead pray to God", said Asadi, who shared a cell with Khamenei for four months in Moshtarak prison in Tehran in 1976 and stayed friend with him for several years after the revolution. "The only music he liked was revolutionary and religious anthems," said Asadi.

After the reformist President Khatami took office in 1997, official attitudes towards music and especially pop began to thaw.

After his election in 2005, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad cracked down on music. His ministry of culture and Islamic guidance has refused permission for the distribution of thousands of albums. Since last year's disputed elections the authorities have given even fewer permits for public concerts, fearing they could be used by the opposition....

* The Ayatollah Khomeini said that.

Ahh, yes--gloriously applied Islamic science.

"Although music is halal, promoting and teaching it is not compatible with the highest values of the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic."

Something has been lost in translation. That"although" is illogical, the opposite of what is meant. Perhaps the original Farsi has, instead, "because" or "since" at the begining of the sentence.

Thus:

"Because music is halal, promoting and teaching it is not compatible with the highest values of the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic."

Halal, haram--it's all the same thing, man.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said today that music is "not compatible" with the values of the Islamic republic...

I agree...Turn off the music...Music is a kufr invention designed to take control of your body and mind...People have involuntary jerky body movements when certain music is playing, this ranges from mildly tapping fingers and foot, up to and including wild and abandon dancing, often sexy and seductive, sometimes actually signing along with it... other music causes the listener to lose consciousness...Only the Jews could invent something as destructive and controlling as music...Whole populations were controlled by the Beatles, now Lady Gaga, more Zionist inventions...So of course this is not compatible with the values of the Islamic Republic...
They march to a different drummer...Allah...and the only music he likes is the blues...

My Chinese wife tells me that there is a chinese proverb that says,'A child who loves music will never be a bad child'. An elderly Jewish man who came to this country in the 1920's (he passed away about 20 years ago) told me that every jewish family had a son or daughter who played either the violin or piano and he was a very busy violin teacher. Cultures that promote the study and performance of European music produce much smarter people. Islam produces sub-normal individuals.

Sitting on my porch drinking a Guiness Stout and munching on a German Brat while strumming my Greek Bouzouki as my Hungarian Vizla barks is my most favorite pastime.

All halal, but all conducive to a happy and healthy life for this grateful infidel.

Life is good.

Reading this makes me want to break out my old KISS albums.

"It's better that our dear youth spend their valuable time in learning science and essential and useful skills...bla..bla..bla.."
Yes indeed!

Here is explained why some think music and/or musical instruments to be haram. Of course, as with other concepts that islam finds controversial you can find justification for the opposite just as well if you care to look for it.

http://muslimways.com/library/miscellaneous/music/why-music-is-haram.html

http://muttaqun.com/music.html

What music IS allowed also tends to be strictly supervised, and regulated in details (yawn, that old song again) concerning occasion, performers, subject and instruments. I like the following in particular:

It is not permissible for women, in weddings or on other occasions, to use any instrument other than the daff (a simple hand drum), such as the oud, violin, rebab (stringed instrument) and so on. This is evil, and the only concession that women are given is that they may use the daff.

As for men, it is not permissible for them to play any kind of musical instrument, whether at weddings or on any other occasion. What Allaah has prescribed for men is training in the use of instruments of war, such as target practice or learning to ride horses and competing in that, using spears, shields, tanks, airplanes and other things such as cannons, machine guns, bombs and anything else that may help jihaad for the sake of Allaah.

khamenei and the rest fo the dooshes are almost finished

Muslims in Britain have been trying to get music, dance, theater and visual arts removed from the school curriculum. http://crombouke.blogspot.com/2010/01/islamic-music-art-and-culture.html

"Although music is halal, promoting and teaching it is not compatible with the highest values of the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic."

The translation's fine. "Halal" means "sanctioned by Islamic law." In other words, approved by. So the quote means, despite not being prohibited, it shouldn't be promoted or taught. He's trying to outlaw what hasn't been formally outlawed yet.

Freemuse, "Freedom of Musical Expression":

Music in schools, music in education, music in upbringing is very central in Europe. I discovered an article written by a Danish mother and muslim who speaks out from personal experiences having married a Moroccan:

True islam is the wonder of the ages .....even if muslim countries admittedly are backwards and suppressive. Islam is beauty and the search for knowledge, there´s is nothing in islam speaking against music, islam is open and let us avoid the old narrow-mindedness in favor of a modern islam.
And so on, all very bright and promising.

But: "Song and music are wonderful tools to create contact and demolish barriers and prejudice between peoples. Islam has never prohibited song or music, so long as text and occasion are morally acceptable."
And her intention obviously is: acceptable to the muslim lifestyle, acceptable to muslim teachings. Or it shall be verboten.

Like I say, halal, haram--it's all the same thing, man.

Besides, if JW's Wordsmith in Residence says halal means haram, it's alright[sic] by me.

Skill in music is conducive to skill in other subjects, especially math. Look for the music-banning societies to see their students' talents in other areas plummet as well. Oh, and the people will probably go nuts if they don't have access to any music at all, not even playing a drum or a simple guitar... What kind of people don't like music? It's baffling. Music has been a feature of every culture on the planet since people started picking up rocks and smacking them together. People like to sing. I guess happiness and creativity are dangerous to these people.

Let us imagine a faithful who does not listen to music, who closes his mind to anything that even remotely smacks of a tune floating up in harmony and melody.

Imagine him joining the pilgrimage to Mecca, and imagine him standing among the righteous in the righteous crowd, all in a jitter, and then the chief sheik begins to recite the Al-Fatiha in a tearful wailing sing-song: our faithful is struck to the core.

I wonder if that is why music is frowned upon by some of the more zealous muslims: excitement is reserved Allah alone.

Halal, haram--it's all the same thing, man.

No they are each others opposites.

If you would refrase your comment like : "Halal, haram--it's all a load of ####, man", then I would agree with you.

Just a flippant remark, threewing. I'm talking facetiously here, tongue-in-cheek. The indiscrimate musings of a vapid mind, that is.

Your point is well-taken.

Refrase, you say? R U shur? (Hey, ain't nothin' wrong with a fonetic'ly-simplified word or too.) [Jus' messin' wid youse there, threepiece.]

(Now, if we want to talk about a genuinely original speller--loved rhymes, games, and 'rithmetic, she did--cute as a button, too--that was my daughter, Joanna Maia. Not much of a talker she was, except when she had it within her to talk! We lost her to a strep infection, one year ago.)

Make that, "indiscriminate musings."

John

I haven't forgotten.

And here, just after her anniversary, for the benefit our newer readers, is the thread from one year ago, in which the jihadwatch online community responded, first to the news of her grave illness, and then to the sad news of her death.

I encourage anyone reading this post who happens to have joined us only after that time (that is, later than August 5 2009) and who has not stumbled across that particular thread in the course of roaming the archives, to click and read that thread. It will teach you a great deal about the regulars here, and the nature of this forum.

Islam is a bit like a mudguard of a car - appears shiny on top but is shitty underneath.
Wonder if Pol Pot had visited Iran and given some lessons on how to lead a miserable life.
Doesn't it make you feel pleased to be human.

We (my wife Julianne and I) haven't forgotten you either, DDA. We remember your kindness and your thoughtful remembrance of our little girl, and that you carefully transcribed and preserved a record of greetings and consolation from our well-wishers here--bless you all and always!
