The Mosque planned for Ground Zero is expected to pass a major hurdle Tuesday.Board members at the Landmarks Preservation Commission intend to vote unanimously against granting protected status to the 152-year-old building that would be knocked down to make way for the project, the Daily News has learned.
The Italianate building on Park Place, two blocks north of Ground Zero, simply does not meet architectural criteria for protection from the city, sources with knowledge of the issue said.
"The building is not worthy," a source said. "It does not rise to the level of an individual landmark."...
Never mind that other buildings in the area that are architecturally similar have been landmarked. Never mind that other buildings, like the Triangle Shirtwaist Company and the Stonewall Inn, have been landmarked for their historical significance, and this building was hit by the landing gear from one of the 9/11 planes. Who cares? Muslims need a triumphal mega-mosque at Ground Zero! Make way!

Truth be known, Americans and their politicians (not to mention the media and academia) were oblivious not only to Europe's mistakes but our own mistakes prior to 9/11, Spirit.

Well, I can't argue about the fertility rates in Islamic versus non-Islamic countries at the moment. I have noticed an increase in number children amongst friends and acquaintences, so I expect that to be a hopeful sign.
You must remember, though, that everything is reversible. If we convince ourselves that Islam is flawed, then we can also convince ourselves that foreign aid to Islamic countries is not in our interests either. Understanding that Islamic countries, aside from the accidental geological benefit of oil recently, tend to be less advanced in every area, except religious fervor, than western nations. This could also translate into a higher mortality rate, without western aid, to accompany and potentially off-set the larger fertility rate, currently.

I agree with your point a bit; we would have great difficulty trying to suppress Islam if we only tried that. And also, as in Julian's time with the Pagans, the current Infidels are unbelievably divided, ignorant and weak, apart from the woken up, vigilant people like those on Jihad Watch.
But we should indeed not focus on vanquishing Islam, but on beliefsystems, society-organising-systems that are both better than Islam's teachings and able to attract enough people to unite behind. And I suppose that's Democratic laws and values. With Enlightenment values and the Golden Rule, human rightsdeclaration of the UN added.
Islam is in place and Democratic laws and values are in place. Now, in the 21st century let the 2 compete, worldwide. With around them even other systems, like communism and what have you.
Or, if at all possible, just let Islam become subservient under Democratic laws and values, because those envision equal rights and opportunities, thus FREEDOMS for all religions, society-organising systems that are willing to let all other religions, society-organising-systems have EQUAL rights, opportunities and freedoms.
In other words; Under the Democratic system clearly Islam has equal rights, opportunities and freedoms like all other beliefsystems, society-organising systems.
But reversed, under Islam, the rest of the beliefsystems, society-organising systems are simply crushed, muzzled, given 2nd class-position at best.
Once we get that clear to a majority of citizens of Democratic countries, Islam and Democracy will be seen as competing (maybe even hostile) systems and the will to be for Democracy and the will for resistance to it's potential nemesis Islam (of course only part of it) will rise and then cause good policies which have a big chance of rendering Islam pretty powerless and harmless. But not for want of Islamic intention, but because of increased Democratic awareness.
