DUBAI - As depositors thronged branches of Afghanistan's biggest bank, Mahmoud Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president and a major shareholder in beleaguered Kabul Bank called on Thursday for intervention by the United States to head off a financial meltdown."America should do something," said Karzai in a telephone interview, suggesting that the U.S. Treasury Department guarantee the funds of Kabul Bank's clients, who number about a million and have more than a billion dollars on deposits with the bank.
Kabul Bank handles salary payments for soldiers, police and teachers. It has scores of branches across Afghanistan and holds the accounts of key Afghan government agencies. The collapse of the bank would likely spread panic throughout the country's fledgling financial sector and wipe out nine years of effort by the United States to establish a sound Afghan banking system, seen as essential to the establishment of a functioning economy.
Action by the United States, said Mahmoud Karzai, would prevent a run on Kabul Bank and protect other banks, too. He said Kabul Bank is "stable and has money" but cannot withstand a stampede by panicked depositors.
"If the Treasury Department will guarantee that everyone will get their money, maybe that will work," said Karzai, who holds 7 percent of the bank's shares, making him the third-biggest shareholder. Karzai, who spends most of his time in Dubai - where he lives in a waterfront villa paid for by Kabul Bank - rushed to Kabul on Wednesday to join efforts to salvage the bank....

Crops that we could have eradicated in 24 hours, yet we did nothing for 8 years. All the while heroin flows into Europe and the U.S. I guess that doesn't bother you either, since you don't seem to be offended by it.
As far medical grade opium, it can be raised in the West or if need be go to synthetic opium. Keeping the crops in Afghanistan is no excuse at all. In fact it's pathetic if that's the best excuse our government types can come up with.

Why don't they ask the rest of the Muslim nations for their share of the jizya that they are charging us with the oil overcharge ? But it sounds like the U.S. Treasury advisers in Afghanistan were more concerned with strengthening Afghanistan's monetary policy rather than monitoring the solvency of its biggest banks...

You are also ignorant. In the real world there is more to morphine than just gettin high. The nice paramedic doesn't give you morphine just because it makes you all warm and fuzzy-feeling. We give it because it has the effects we want to treat whatever is most likely to kill you before we can hand you off to the ER doctor. It has some side effects that are extremely valuable (life-saving) in certain medical situations. It is also easily reversed (in part or in whole) if need be. That is not necessarily true with synthetic opiates.
But you go right ahead and lobby for the destruction of all opium-producing plants and the use of only synthetic morphine. At some point in your life, you will need an ambulance and may need real morphine, and all I (or someone like me) will have is the synthetic stuff. Quite frankly, it'll suck to be you.
