Western countries wanting to end threats from the middle east must be more aggressive in attempts to use alternative fuels and move away from fossil fuels. Alternative fuel vehicles are a pricey minority, that effort needs to be stepped up. Jihadists are funding their conquests on oil and opiates. We have to break their pocket books.

Muthuswamy speaks VERY slowly and the idea/minute ratio is low. His solution is that of a rationalist. He proposes the use of "science" to counter religious belief associated with Sharia and Jihad. But is it not true that Islam disdains any advantages of modernism procured by "science" if such advantages conflict with Koranic moral strictures? Allah made clear what he wants and expects through the Koran and that settles it, once and for all. Propagandizing the elites on the basis of "science" wouldn't seem too promising if the elites are where they are, in part, at least, as the result of the present formulations of Islam. Muthuswamy analogizes the defeat of communism to what must be done to defeat radical Islam but, as others have noted, communists are atheists and value life; radical Muslims constantly point out that they are theists and value death for its heavenly rewards. Religious beliefs are conditioned by many factors which are not all rationally based. For me, Muthuswamy's argument is too narrow and not persuasive at all.
Moorthy Muthuswamy should be commended for his attempt to find constructive solutions to the menace of Islam. However, I have to agree with Charles above that the argument is too narrow and unconvincing.
The menace of Soviet Communism did not have the element of demographics and unchecked immigration. Despite the paranoia of McCarthyism the threat then was external. Today the threat is indeed coming from within and that threat is Islam allied with the Left ideology of political correctness that has eroded our self confidence and will to respond.
America got seduced by meaningless rhetoric of "Yes we can" - yes we can render America impotent and yes we can ignore the deficit until the next GFC - the one that only needs to be slightly bigger next time and set the dominos falling - not in a foreign land but right here.
The problem is not only that of the politics of the Democrats with their good cop bad cop routine of Obama and Pelosi.
The cancer is just as much in the Republican politics. The presidency of George Bush was an unmitigated disaster. After 9/11 he became the dhimmi-in-chief by calling Islam a great faith when it is the doctrines of that faith that where attacking America at home and around the world. He too was under the spell of the scourge of the Left ideology of political correctness.
Whatever the situation in America the situation in Europe is a 1000 time worst. For 50 years a left wing fascism has silenced all dissenting voices - for an example just look at the hatched job the left wing fascists are trying to do on Geert Wilders or Thilo Sarrazin.
So to defeat Islam my thesis is that one must defeat the Leftist fascism and their thought control that has pervaded discourse and policy for the last 50 years.
Muthuswamy has usefully pointed out that if you want to prove the other side wrong, you allow their poor thinking/values to cause them to fall flat on their face. Then everyone will see who's fallen down and who's still standing upright, and everyone will recognize who the moron is.
The US unfortunately keeps propping up the floundering Pakistan, instead of allowing them to wallow in the misery of their own making. The US should simply destroy Pakistan's nuclear capability, to keep them from exporting nukes to anybody else, and allow Pakistan to die its own natural death from its own economic stupidity. They can't even feed their people, or bail them out of floods. They're totally dependent upon the US to prop them up, and the US is stupidly giving them everything they need, when it should instead let them fall flat on their faces.
Same thing with the rest of the Middle East. They totally make a living off of oil, instead of working for a living like everybody else. Without the oil, they'd be nothing - they'd be worse than Africa. The US should start building nuclear reactors like Japan, apply a heavy gasoline tax, and start churning out electric vehicles, to wean itself off Middle Eastern oil. Then the oil-rich Arabs who have enough free time on their hands to support terror groups, will then fall flat on their faces economically.
You prove the other side wrong by letting the fall flat on their faces, instead of always bailing them out. The US needs to stop bailing out the other side.
Moorthy Muthuswamy, as a physicist, brings an interesting angle to the struggle with Islamic totalitarianism.
His book, Defeating Political Islam gets very positive reviews from Robert Spencer, Geert Wilders, and Bill Warner:
CORE ISLAMIC TEXTS TESTIFY THAT THE QUR'AN EXISTED IN VARIOUS DIFFERENT VERSIONS AND HAS NOT BEEN PERFECTLY PRESERVED
Here's a video contribution to Muthuswamy's suggestion about bringing science to bear on the Qur'an. In this case, though, it's not exactly "science"; it's hard logic employed by a couple of scholars who know the Islamic texts very well and point out, in a witty presentation, that Islamic texts themselves repeatedly say and show that the Qur'an existed in many different versions, and has not been perfectly preserved.
Definitely worth a viewing:

This is Moorthy Muthuswamy.
Let me first of all thank Robert for his generosity. All of
you can see that Robert has been a peerless leader in our just war of necessity.
With all other faiths or religions, by and large, modernity has won out – meaning that people have been open to absorbing any new knowledge and especially, not be dictated by respective religious scriptures and by religious leaders.
But Muslims have been an exception.
As I have pointed out in my lecture series, this is due to the contents and the thrust of the Islamic doctrines themselves and importantly, due to the Muslims faith in them.
This naturally brings up the solution that if we want Muslims to be integrated, they have to be made to believe less in Islamic doctrines. If Muslims were to lose faith in their doctrines, we win (and so do the Muslims). A platform based upon “science” is the most logical and credible way of getting this done.
Charles & raven_, you both have missed the critical observation in my lecture: That the educated Muslims, by definition, are most susceptible to “science” or common sense-based arguments. It’s just that we have kept quiet thus far owing to human decency (of not wanting to attack a person’s faith).
But now, the gloves are coming off.
It is true to say that Science has been a counterpoint, and some, like Hawkins and Dawkins, would argue an antidote, to Religion.
Your argument is essentially the "Islamic Renaissance" argument. That is, if Islam could only experience the enlightenment of Science, like Christians did in the Renaissance, then all would be well.
1) Educated Muslims have not been an effective counterpoint to Islamic teachings. Pakistan is a perfect example.
2) In your comment you yourself say that modernity has won out but for Islam. So why should it be different going forward? Look at Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia and of course Iran, well educated countries that have seen a resurgence of Sharia thought patterns.
3) Islam does not want to find its place amongst the other ideologies. It wants to be supreme and with a little help from the BBC rewrite history and in particular the history of Science (sorry, I could not resist a dig). This is not a question of lack of rationality but ideological aspiration.
4) In the Western world we are entering a period where the enlightenment of Science has reached its zenith. Today, I read an article about how researching and publishing statistical data about immigrates is considered unethical. Science meets leftist thought control. So there are limits to the power of science.
5) The demographic tsunami of sharia is more powerful and faster moving than the speculative moderating ripples of science on Islamic thought.
In conclusion, I understand your thesis, I think the evidence speaks against it succeeding, but I am open, and desperately hopeful, to be convinced of otherwise.
The Quan have the big bang theory over 1400 year ago an alots of other modern idears are found in the Quan which was written over 1400 year ago.
traeh, great link. Thanks.
Moorthy, I am sorry this won't work.
Your approach will hopefully help educate the non-Muslims, but is likely to leave the average Muslim, even the educated one, cold and resentful.
The educated Muslim possibly already realizes that there are things wrong with the religion he was born into, but however absurd, however silly that religion may be, it gives him an Identity and a comfortable feeling of Community, both of which are being overwhelmed by modernity.
He therefore rationalizes, with "scientific" explanations and conspiracy theories; he fantasizes about a "Golden age" of Islam and how Europe stole all the scientific knowledge from Islam. Or he simply develops a "Blind Spot", where he goes into pathological denial or refuses to reason and is deeply resentful and even hostile, if someone tries to point out the obvious flaws.
This is not about logic, my friend. It's about emotion.
There's another aspect too. The non-Muslims and their countries are more respectful and accommodating to the fundamentalists and the ultra-orthodox, because the latter are seen as the "pious" Muslims, who are the "true" leaders of their "great religion" or are seen as seriously threatening and capable of inflicting violence, so need to be placated. And thus, at their behest, we have more mosques and more fundamentalist preachers imported under the garb of multi-culturism and tolerance and other modern values.
In the process, the modern, liberal Muslim living in the West, who thought he had escaped from the clutches of totalitarian Islamic societies finds himself screwed. Perhaps the first step to help these liberal Muslims and co-opt them, is to put a brake on all these mosques being constructed ostensibly on their behalf and also to insist that the "imported" Islamic teachers and preachers are proficient and qualified in the local language. You will obviously not find any Muslim publicly saying this, because his and his family's life's going to be in danger, but that's possibly one way of helping.
Moorthy Muthuswamy,
Has put this as clearly as it can be put with one exception. We as free world peoples must help and give more help to the Muslim Apostates all over the world. This is the only way Islam will see its error in judgement of Sharia, and the Qu'ran. War or and killing each other will not help either of us.
If we non-Muslims start to help the apostates that number will grow and continue to go faster and faster. Other Muslims will see what is happening and also try to reform or leave Islam. With Gods Will the world will then become a better place for "all of us to live".
Of course the other way is to keep killing each other until over 1 billion are murdered.
He saith, "Be," behold! it is. Islam's Big Bang Theory? You are willing to toy with a Western theory, the one in favor at the moment in the scientific community, and say it was in the Koran 1400 years ago? It's only a theory oh deep thinker of Islam. Observable traces of past events are at the forefront of this theory. Could it be that the signature left by past events is beyond today's current detection methods? The arrogance of science meets the arrogance of Islam. A match made in all seven heavens? It's like the conspiracy theories that abound in the middle east. Imagination is used to fill-in the tangible.
I appreciate Moorthy Muthuswamy's perspective on science and using science to point out key flaws with Islam. I think that using science to wage a "war of ideas" is not ineffective. The essential influence that Moorthy may have in this effort may have a trickle-down effect that would surprise us all.
Examples could be big-name followers of Islam that reject the extremism and weaken the toxins of violent jihad and sharia. I am willing to accept that a key method is reasoning within Islam itself. This of course, requires the right leadership, charisma, and sensibilities. And verses from Quran don't make the choicest allies in such a fight.
