Disney worker demanding to wear hijab still refuses company's offers to compromise

It's not that Disney is refusing her a job or a living wage because she is a Muslim. Rather, it is clear from this story that Imane Boudlal wants to be seen wearing a hijab and wants Disneyland to be her platform for doing so; thus, Disney's attempts to compromise and offer her other positions and alternative costuming options have been non-starters.

Disney is in the entertainment business. Costumes and standards of appearance are part of maintaining the experience that Disneyland sells, and uniforms are called "uniforms" for a reason. But Boudlal is bent on injecting her own social engineering agenda into Disney's small, small world, and believes it trumps the basic principle that one is not entitled to a job whose requirements one cannot fulfill.

An update on this story. "Muslim hostess and Disney still at odds over headscarf," by Laura Bly for USA Today, September 13:

A Muslim woman who sued Disney last week for refusing to let her wear a religious headscarf at her job as a Disneyland Resort restaurant hostess says she has been suspended without pay for turning down the company's alternatives - including a large hat and bow-tie bonnet she called "humiliating" and "embarrassing."

Nothing new there: company uniforms tend to be unflattering in some way to just about everyone.

According to her union, Unite Here Local 11, Imane Boudlal was suspended Tuesday after rejecting both a Disney-made hijab, or headscarf, and offers of four "backstage" jobs out of the public eye.
But Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown said that while the company had not scheduled Boudlal for future work hours, Boudlal's characterization was inaccurate.
"Over the last four days we have made every attempt to provide Ms. Boudhal with several different costuming options which we believe would accommodate her religious beliefs and meet our costuming guidelines," said Brown in a prepared statement.
"We also offered her four roles" - three phone-based positions and one bakery job, all of which paid at least as much as what she was making as a hostess at the Grand Californian Hotel - "that would allow her to wear her own hijab," the statement added. "She's chosen to reject over and over again all the options presented to her."
Disney's strict dress code prohibits "cast members," or employees who meet the public, from wearing religious items. But the company has worked to accommodate employees' concerns by allowing such modifications as longer sleeves and skirts instead of pants. In 2004, Disney World in Florida was sued by a female Muslim employee who wanted to wear a headscarf to work. The case was settled out of court and the terms were confidential.
Boudlal, a U.S. citizen who was born in Morocco, has been employed at the Western-themed Storyteller's Cafe for more than two years. She said that while she has worn a headscarf off the job for the past year, she decided she had the right to wear her hijab to work after studying for her citizenship exam in June and reading a Disney manual that mentioned an accommodation policy for religious beliefs.
She said she had requested a Disney-made headscarf more than two months ago, and when she arrived at the restaurant Aug. 15 wearing her own, she was told to remove it or go home. She filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission last Wednesday.
"I'm not a character in a role, I just wear a uniform," said Boudlal, who added that she has been willing to accept a "simple and decent" Disney alternative but is unwilling to move to a behind-the-scenes job "because I'd feel humiliated."
"The point is, they don't want anyone to look Muslim or different," she said.

That's why they call it a "uniform." So people don't look different, or somehow more privileged or special than the next worker.

"Costumes and standards of appearance are part of maintaining the the experience that Disneyland sells, and uniforms are called 'uniforms' for a reason."

This employee is also playing a uniform game. The Islamic headscarf is part of the Muslim uniform and as noted her purpose is to imprint a Disney approval on this peculiar headgear to further the attempted mainstreaming of Muslims, their odd but haughty behavior, and more importantly their arrogant thinking.

Why do you think Muslims in London and other European countries (and more frequently even here in the USA) can be seen running around in jubbas and throbes and other flowing garments. These garments are intended for personal comfort in hot climates. Because Europe is not tropical, and at times can be downright cold, the wearing of these things is part of a great play to change the thinking of the racist Europeans.

Disney is now in the cross hairs. Will it assert its principles?

I don't know why Disney has a problem with this. What says "The Happiest Place on Earth" like a burqa? sarc/off

Soon we'll see McDonald's associates wearing the niqab with "I'm lovin it" silkscreened on the veil, or pushing the McRib sandwich. Let the pure capitalists use the Muslimahs as walking billboards.

Ramadan in 2010 started on Wednesday, the 11th of August and continued for 30 days until Thursday, the 9th of September.

Interestingly, this news hit the paper linked in the original article on August 18th, 2010, 1:34 pm. In this article the reporter notes Imane Boudlal had been sent home without pay four times that week - already - after attempting to wear a hijab at work.

This muslima was assigned to work within an aromatic dining environment, at the Storytellers’ Cafe in the Grand Californian Hotel in Downtown Disney during a period of daylight fasting for RAMADAN. Is it a coincidence the timing of this controversy coincides with her adherence to RAMADAN?

Is it then also just a mere coincidence that RAMADAN ended last week and since Imane Boudlal no longer has to fast, she is eager to return to this very specific assignment - hence the resurgence in msm peddling this absurd p/c entiltlement.

No. It's no coincidence.

There is a really easy way to fix this, Fire her. Make it known at the time of hire religious garb of all faiths is prohibited and if you cannot abide by that your sorry behind will remain firmly planted in the unemployment line. Everyone that way is treated equally and it will eliminate any future muslim problems.

"...because I'd feel humiliated."

The humiliation charge has become very popular among Muslims. "Humiliation" appears to be one of the buzz words designed to trigger guilt and hesitation on the part of whomever it is directed at.

Disney has bent over backwards to accommodate this woman in a fair an equitable way. They should have the courage to stand by their principles and resist continued harassment by the woman and her behind-the-scene handlers. THEY SHOULD NOT SETTLE FOR "DAMAGES" as merely a way to remove this thorn in their side. This would be equivalent to acceding to extortion, but worse, it would merely encourage others to follow her example, knowing that it is a win-win strategy without penalties.

Give the woman notice that continued pursuit of this case will be met by a countersuit for filing a frivolous or nuisance lawsuit, and that she will be billed by the company for the time they are forced to spend on it.

next she will want a male relative to be employed at the same place and time as her.

if she is a true moslem she wont be out of the home without an appropriate male guardian.

then again, if she wants to live a full moslem life why doesn't she go work in disneyland mecca?

oh yea: that's right fun is banned in saudi arabia.

making this kind of fuss is counter productive for moslems cos everyone starts to ask about the rights of non moslem women in arabia to not wear a symbol of male supremacy on their heads? then they get annoyed and come to the conclusion that the answer is that devout moslems should just stay in devout moslem countries where they would have all the rights they want to have.

What would they do if a Scottish-American worker insisted on coming to work in a kilt?

This has CAIR written all over it

Let's be honest. Hijabs make Muslim women look ugly. Disney doesn't have lots and lots of princesses running around for nothing. This chick needs her ass handed to her on a plate. Then watch the cockroaches at CAIR scurry back into the filth and leave her hanging.

Oh, I noticed that she waited until she got her citizenship, and then made a fuss.

Sorry, lady, but Disney has ALWAYS had appearance codes. Men are not allowed to wear long hair (and, at one time, facial hair). And they've always been rather uncompromising about it. They have an image they wish to project, and to maintain.

If she thinks a hat is "humiliating", how about being one of the costumed characters that mingle with the crowds? You know, Mickey and Minnie and the Big Bad Wolf, all of whom you can have your picture taken with. How do those folks feel about their job?

And yes, you ARE a "character" if you work for Disney. Plain and simple. If you don't like their rules, don't work for them.

Oh, and the fully costumed dudes also are not allowed to speak, period, if children are anywhere nearby. How would she feel about THAT?

I think Disney employees are made to read a statement to the effect that they must not wear certain religious items that detract from the overall Disney costumes.

This obviously doesn't apply to all the employees as they have tried to accomodate her by giving her other positions of equal pay. Certain positions require you to be very visible so your job requirements are somewhat different than those of say a Baker who is not seen by the general public.

It is obvious that she wants to be seen wearing the Hijab by the general public on Disney grounds and is determined to do so. If I was Disney, I would just stop accomodating her and fire her on the spot next time she shows up with Hijab on.

We had an instance in Britain not too long ago where a headscarf clinging muslima insisted on wearing the thing when applying for a job as a hairdresser. She lost the case.

Similarly a teaching assistant demanded that she wear a full face veil niqab when teaching pupils. She lost the case.

Again a pupil at a high school was adamant about wearing a full robe rather than the already islam compliant shalwar kameez tunic and pants. She, after two appeals lost the case.

Each one drives a wedge. It alerts our public that these people are not the easy going moderates portrayed, rather zealots for a cause of separation and aloofness.

Disney can afford to drag this out. They've got the money and high power lawyers and for once I'd applaud their use.

Send out press releases. Expose the lies they so naturaly leap to. Let the public see the intransigence of this creed. Use the CAIR playbook in reverse. Keep it on and on like a supurating sore within their organisation.

And above all never back down.

Oh, they have every right to segregate themselves (more right than some other groups do!) - in their own damn countries.

I can tell you that a person simply can not get through the orientation at DW and not be fully aware of how important the dress code is and how it is part of the experience for the park goer, they have never relaxed their rule before, I doubt they will now, DW is very powerful in Central Florida ( It is called the Disney Mafia for a reason) and has won many judgments in court. There is some talk that the 9th Judicial Circut Court, ( Orange Co) Chief Judge Belvin Perry is very friendly with DW,

As a Central Florida native, I believe she will be told to comply with the dress code or find another job.

No one can wear religious attire while on the job, no crucifx, Star of David ect..

Well, if Disney insists on giving employment to people from Mickey Mouse religions, what can they expect?

(I'll bet my last dime that a hush-hush missive has been sent to Disneyworld's Human Resources Dept.instructing them to avoid employing anyone from the aforementioned Mickey Mouse outfit!)

It's obvious, the woman is a test case for high profile copanies. Once Disney caves, the muslems will jump on ALL companies. Before long, you'll see them everywhere. The next step will be a push to wear the full costume, the face mask. A get-up that is very frightening.

Imagine in winter, in the dark, coming across those critters. Halloween stuff, here.

The theological justification for the hijab is that the uncovered hair of a woman sexually excites men, driving them out of control, to perform all sorts of heinous acts against women and the public weal.

laundry list of heinous acts available at
http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/

If this is truly the case, the solution to Ms Boudlal's problem seems simple: shave her head! She would then not have exposed hair and not enflame the passions of men and defenseless boy visitors to Disneyland, and she would probably be much more willing to wear that cute little bow-tie bonnet.

I'm sure that Mohammad would agree to this solution, but I wonder if the passions of women are enflamed by his bushy chin-spinach?

Maybe Muslim men should be required to wear a face-hijab just to be safe...

The headscarf wearing job applicant to the hairdressing salon came away from an employment tribunal in 2008 with 4 thousand pounds compensation for 'injury to feelings'. She'd originally claimed 15 thousand pounds, a claim increased to 34 thousand pounds during the case to compensate her for hate mail that she'd received after press coverage of the case.

It is a problem for small businesses. Someone interviewing for a large company would have been schooled to avoid saying anything at the interview that would leave them open to a claim of discrimination on any ground (sex, age, disability, race). Mentioning the scarf at all during the interview was the salon owner's mistake. Being nice in trying to find a way to employ her she'd asked if the applicant would take it off during work hours, but she'd have saved 4000 pounds if she'd not mentioned it, assumed that the girl would refuse to remove the scarf and binned the application. A lesson learned the hard way.

allat, I don't think DW will cave, they know if they do they will have to do it for everyone and that would be a disaster, for example, How authintic would Snow White be if she had a Satanic symbol swinging from her neck.

As someone stated up thread, DW has plenty of money and they DO have friends in the courts, they will fight this and I believe they will win.

HA! That was a funny mental picture. Of course if McD's ever allowed the wearing of those garments, I'd probably never go again.

Let her wear her hijab. Just give her a basket of poisoned apples and let her hang with Snow White.

LMAO @ Lorem Ipsum! That's a solution.

"The theological justification for the hijab is that the uncovered hair of a woman sexually excites men, driving them out of control, to perform all sorts of heinous acts against women and the public weal."

But Muslim men perform all sorts of heinous acts against women anyway. Remember Taraneh Moussavi.

...pehaps I should have said "...more heinous acts"

Oh lordy, when we go to Disney World or Disneyland, we think of fun, excitment, fantasy, good times, the best of what america has to offer in terms of wholesome entertainment. A good times for all .
If we see burqas and hijab we will immediatly start thinking, slavery, suicide killers, honor killings, massacres of infidals, oppression of nonmuslims, the best that the muslim world has to offer us. A bad times for all.
I never never would have thought that was the intentions of the Walt Disney.

Exactly. Who needs it? Islam seems to be a lot like urban sprawl or seeping blood that stains the carpet. We don't want it, it must be contained and we are the ones who need to do it.

I sent Disney two letters a couple of weeks ago and the second one had detailed information about how CAIR shakes down major corporations and police departments around the U.S. I received back quite a long letter that was not a form letter, answering my concerns and assuring me that my information was appreciated and sent to the proper channels to be handled. From their response, I believe they heard me. I have faith that this time the little Muslim engine that could will be flattened by a Mac truck. And then the rest of us need to follow suit.

the Muslim nijab, burkah and chador are all about striking fear into the non Muslims...warning them to back off...a Muslim approaches and you had better move....if you know what's good for you...

Does anyone really believe any of this whining & these humiliation claims from such Muslims? IMO this is just another attempt by Muslims to muscle into our culture and be in our face, however their hijabs, burkas or other Islamic symbols would disturb the context or surroundings. Ultimately, it's preparation for demographic domination in the future - remember the slowly boiling frog theme.

Muslim immigration to the West should be stopped, however the "moderate" Muslims might try to make you think that this would be "bigoted" or "un-American".

A people of any country have the ownership of that country and have the right to decide who can come in - not elites, not university professors or Obama types - and to hell what the UN or whatever self-righteous entity might think.

"Moderate" Muslims are a big part of the problem - they provide physical & psychological cover for the jihadists, stealth and otherwise, even if unintentional. Honest Muslims here in America, I believe, can recognize Islam as an obvious lie and dump it and join free Americans.

They can do this stuff , such as at Disney's , simply because we let them

I've just watched a programme on bbc about piracy
( with lots of excuses for the pirates of course )
The eu people on the programme talk about how they don't want to harm the pirates etc .
So you see clips of grinning pirates after their arrest Talk about being a soft touch

Another point :a lot was said about poverty driving them to commit these crimes - they can't feed themselves etc .
Wouldn't you think that , given asylum in the west ,they'd be grateful - but of course we know they go in for crime , assault and rape .

I'm a small conservative , I suppose , and I know how dangerous big changes in society are but I'd like to see a coup in Europe - if not , we're finished .

The usual pantomime of victimhood.

Two classic articles on the subject by one 'David Thompson'.

It's OK to Dislike Islam

http://davidthompson.typepad.com/davidthompson/2007/03/intimidation_re.html

and 'The Passive-Aggressive Jihad'

http://davidthompson.typepad.com/davidthompson/2007/03/the_passiveaggr.html

From the first of those two articles:

"What's unfair, indeed despicable, are efforts by Islamic groups to cow dissent and stifle criticism with a well-rehearsed pantomime of victimhood and the projection of false motives.

"Pretending to be hurt in order to assert one's will over others, even violently,

**or to gain unreciprocated favours, or to exert control over what others may say and think** {my emphasis - dda} is cowardly and malign.

"Let me say that once again. It's cowardly and malign." END QUOTE

This Muslima is pretending to be hurt in order to assert her will over others, and to gain a favour that is granted to none of her fellow, non-Muslim workers, and which would NOT be granted by a Muslim employer in dar al Islam to any non-Muslim who dared to make a similar demand. She is attempting to bend *Disney* to her will, by a well-rehearsed pantomime of victimhood.

She needs her a$$ kicked out of there.

It's very telling that she waited till she had citizenship before she tried it on; just like the guy who tried to bomb Times Square waited until *after* he had citizenship, before he activated his plot (perhaps he wanted to be sure of being able to claim the rights of a citizen criminal, if so be his bomb failed - as it did - and he didn't get to see the virgins in allah's whorehouse after all).

There are, therefore, two morals to be drawn from this story.

First, for non-Muslim businesses and companies in the lands of the non-Muslims...you really are better off not hiring Muslims in the first place. Because they may pull the same shake-down/ extortionate tactics on you, as this hijabette is doing. Would you hire a known member of a Mafia 'family'? A Muslim is something similar.

Second, for non-Muslim countries...don't import any more Muslims! Then you'll assuredly cut down on this kind of incident. As for the Muslim non-citizen residents you've already got...best NOT to give them citizenship, in case they turn round and do the sorts of thing this female, and the Times Square bomber, and many others, have done and are doing! (Citizenship may be offered ONLY to thoroughly-checked and monitored bona fide publicly-declared apostates, such as Rifqa Bary, who may have to be viewed as 'on parole'...and if genuine, such apostates will understand completely, none better, why the non-Muslims are being wary, and will be only too happy to cooperate with background checks, report in once a year for a security interview, etc.).

American employers: Stop giving them jobs, dum dums. How many of these same stories do we have to see before employers wise up?

Probably many more.

If they can't feed themselves, how did they grow to adulthood from childhood, and where do they get the energy to go a-piratin'?

And what happened to all that foreign aid money, and all the food that CCF and World Vision are supposed to be giving them?

Inquiring minds wanna know.

Affirmative Action will make sure that we see lots more stories like this, and more.

Aye, and swingin' his claymore, laddie!

@ What? The way I understand it is, she was hired on while not covering up, (nice deception huh?)

The way I see it is, she worked long enough to then turn around and say " But I have been a good employee, you've had no problem with me" and then sprung the hijab on them.

Smartly though, DW has made several alternative suggestions for her to continue to work and earn a living, ( in this economy, she should be grateful) and she refused all their efforts to resolve the dispute. She will come across as unyeilding to a jury, unwilling to accept DW's attempts to work with her.

She really doesn't want to end up in a civil suit with Disney, they go to court to win and she is a loser.

I recommend that they dress her up at Mickie Mouse. She could pretend she is really Farfar, the Hamas childrens' television jihad mouse.

What next?
How about the new c.a.i.r. approved uniform for the Dallas Cheerleaders.
Or how about sharia compliant Hooters girl outfits?
The possibilities are endless.

Couldn't they put her in chains on a Pirates Of The Caribbean ship as a Muslim slave girl captured by infidel cut-throats?

That way she could cry all day long like the little piggy that she is, wee-wee-wee.

Ha! Or maybe give her to Cinderella's wicked stepsisters?

When she was speaking to the assembled press, she said that if she wore the costume Disney gave her, "No one will know I am Muslim."

She showed the "bonnet" Disney specifically made for her, but she complained about what the bonnet did to her face. She also said she found out when going over her questions for citizenship that she had "freedom of religion" and wanted to wear the thing for ramadan. Besides the being "humiliated" part, she is trying to assert that she is "better" than all other Disney characters and should be where people can see her and recognize her religion.

So she wants everyone to know that she is Muslim.
She complains of how the bonnet makes her face look, and she wanted to wear it after learning about freedom of religion.

How come she lived here so long and yet she just found out that she is offered freedom of religion? What makes her think that she is any better than anyone else who works "behind the scenes?" Being muslim, of course.

She is deluding herself when she says that it is the bonnet that makes her face look like it does. She needs to have it made clear...her face is what it is. The bonnet just gives the human eye someplace else to focus.

Disney World should not have settled out of court. She found out and wants the big bucks. She doesn't want to work. She should be appreciative of the job and the paycheck and act like all of the other employees...do as your employer wishes you to do or look elsewhere. The rest of us have to.

Native Americans would not be allowed to wear their religious headdress. Christians have been told to hide their crosses or face unemployment. She shouldn't be treated any differently. And yet, she has already been treated as special in that she has been offered special arrangements and many days in which to comply without being dismissed.

Disney should find a way to just dismiss her and fight it out with a jury.

Just a couple of passing comments; in my opinion nazi islam begins and ends with the hijab. Also lets hold on to those two very important principles we learnt at school: "When in Rome do as the Romans do" and "Sticks and stones can hurt my body but words can never do."

Yeah, that's the thing. She wants people to know she's a Muslim. Well, stick her with the kids from whatever country she came from, in the It's a Small World ride (a la Stewie Griffin. And say, did anyone see that episode? When Peter rescued Stewie, they were being chased by a Muslim guard. Peter got them away by saying - "Look over there! A woman learning!" and distracting the guy. I love that show.) :D

I almost got fired from Disney one summer while working at Star Trader for wearing a thin cloth bracelet and chewing gum. I gave my manager some attitude about it and they sent me over to an office with a suit in it. He had an ear bud, so he looked kind of like a CIA guy. First words I remember were, "so...you're a temp (worker), aren't you?". I was like "gulp, here it comes". I relented and he let me go back to work.

Yea, pretty hard core, but hey, it's Disney man. You want a piece of their pie, you gotta do it their way.

I was musing today, how well will it work for strict Muslims to work in food joints when pork is considered worse than poison? I can see some interesting Disney-like lawsuits being tried there. We hosted a student from Kenya. He actually threw up after riding in the mini van when he realized the other kids had all eaten pizza w/pepperoni on it and he had shared the air with them. We/he didn't last the term we were signed up for.

perfect place for these niqab muslimas in disneyworld. As one of the ghosties in the exhibit Haunted House. They are guaranteed to scare the pants off all visitors.
