The International Monetary Fund expects the Palestinian economy to grow by 8 percent overall this year, after the West Bank economy grew by 9 percent in the first half and the Gaza Strip by a whopping 16 percent.This compares to growth of only 1 percent in Gaza for all of 2009, and of 8.5 percent in the West Bank for all of last year, according to a World Bank report published in April.
The IMF's report attributed Gaza's impressive growth in the first half of this year both to the easing of Israel's blockade - though most of this occurred only during the final month of the half - and to the fact that the comparable period of 2009 was so poor, due in part to the Israel-Hamas war that ended in January 2009.
"It's starting from a very low base after a very tight blockade," said Oussama Kanaan, the IMF representative in the West Bank and Gaza.
The assistance of international organizations, which launched various projects in Gaza during the first half of 2010, also contributed to the Strip's economic growth, the report said....

Gaza's war on peace: 12 rockets hit southern Israel:
If Israel is fighting a war on terror, then it must be concluded that the terrorists who run the Gaza Strip are fighting a war on peace.
At least 12 rockets and mortar shells were fired from Gaza into southern Israel on Wednesday, miraculously causing no injuries or damage. One of the rockets fired during the early morning hours landed dangerously close to a power station in the coastal city of Ashkelon.
The Israeli air force responded by bombing a number of terrorist installations.
As Israeli and the Palestinian Authority leaderships met for the second time during this current round of peace talks on Tuesday, Gaza’s Hamas rulers vowed to derail the negotiations.
Israel is being pressured by the US to not let the ongoing attacks affect its positions and its participation in the talks, and to respond to the attacks in a very limited fashion so as to not upset PA leader Mahmoud Abbas. But many Israelis insists that if Abbas is incapable of or unwilling to control his people, then he is not a viable peace partner. That feeling applies also to Gaza, even though Abbas has no authority there at present, primarily because Abbas and his regime continue to insist that any peace deal must include Gaza.

Ruslan, I agree with you. If I were the US President, I would order a freeze on all US funds to UNRRA and to the PA until there's a real peace. I'd cut off aid to Egypt as well. After all the slanders that Al-Ahram (Egypt's government-owned daily) publishes about the USA, we know what the government of Egypt really thinks about us.
I was looking at a pic from concentration camp from a while back and there was a young kid legging it from a shop that got hit by an IDF shell - wicked, wicked Jews, every country in the world would tolerate 8,000 rockets being launched at them, er, wouldnd't they? - the kid was making off with a TV. Across the street was a jeep, occupied by four Hamas looking types, one with a phone up to his ear. I was thinking, where did I see that scene before.
