US and European officials said Tuesday they have detected a plot to carry out a major, coordinated series of new terror attacks in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and possibly the United States.
A senior US official said that while there is a "credible" threat, no specific time or place is known. President Obama has been briefed about the threat, say senior US officials.
Intelligence and law enforcement authorities in the US and Europe said the threat information is based on the interrogation of a suspected German terrorist allegedly captured on his way to Europe in late summer and now being held at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan.
US law enforcement officials say they have been told the terrorists were planning a series of "Mumbai-style" commando raids on what were termed "economic or soft" targets in the countries.
In testimony before Congress last week, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said, "We are all seeing increased activity by a more diverse set of groups and a more diverse set of threats."
Bet there's a common thread.
The captured German reportedly said several teams of attackers, all with European passports, had been trained and dispatched from training camps in Waziristan and Pakistan. Officials say the German claimed the attack plan had been approved by Osama Bin Laden.
These attackers are in addition to the reported 90 or so combat-trained jihadists already reported to be in Germany last November.
US intelligence officials said they believed an attack on American soil was more likely to come from terrorists connected to the al Qaeda group in Yemen, known as AQAP, al Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula.
In the last four years, dozens of German citizens have been recruited to train in al Qaeda-connected camps in Pakistan, according to US and German law enforcement officials.
"The American authorities are extremely nervous about what is going on, the Germans are extremely nervous about what's going on," said Guido Steinberg, a counter-terrorism analyst at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.
"The advantage, of course, is the passport, because with the German passport it's a lot easier to travel," said Steinberg.

I had been wondering how long it would take for AQ to recognise how vulnerable we are to low tech mass casualty attacks. Looks like they have learned the lesson of Mumbai. We are v. vulnerable to such attacks. Mumbai wasn't actually that well organised in terms of causing mass casualties.

But when the enemy hides among civilians, or use civilians as 'human shields' including women and children, as the Muslim jihadis do with sickening regularity, then civilians will die. Thank you for your reply, duh_swami ...and I completely agree that JW needs rules which would include banning repeat offenders. But in Hesp's case, this came without warning. If you read through the series of comments that led to his banning, then you will realize that this was the case. I don't consider that fair, but arbitrary and mean really - especially the manner by which it was handled; and I have read comments from other posters that have gone on drunken rants, repeatedly attacking and even threatening Hesp, and yet they are allowed to remain on board. Hesp was well liked and admired by many posters, but he only annoyed a small few. Seems the minority won out in his case; as did CAIR, et al. We lost a formidable warrior and friend in the anti-jihad movement on JW. He will be greatly missed.
I can't comment on Hesperado's outlook on life...But he had several differences with Spencer over time besides the posts that you refer to...I probably would not ban him, even though he may have some thoughts or solutions I don't agree with...

In fact I have read similar comments (similar to the one that Hesp made) from other posters over the years, but they never resulted in deletion or banning; so I am not entirely sure what "clear boundaries" you are referring to. Again, thank you for your response.
Just maybe some mediation is possible between Hesperado and Robert Spencer. About boundaries. I daresay Hesperado can see reason in him using Roberts blog, but with reasonable boundaries. If they were not clear, clarity of them may be asked and explained, then deals may be struck.
And an intelligent person like Hesperado then can operate within the established boundaries. and as a democrat he can also agree to disagree agreeably.
