Texas Board of Education passes resolution challenging pro-Islamic bias in textbooks

What is often lost in this discussion is the idea that the Board has the right and duty to exercise quality control over the content of its textbooks, and it would be reasonable for any such body to be concerned about bias, double standards, and agenda-driven statements in those books. The problem that responsibility is encountering here is Islam's already privileged status, where anything but accolades is to be met with knee-jerk accusations of the worst possible intentions, so as to shut down the discussion and silence dissent.

An update on this story. "Texas ed board adopts resolution limiting Islam," from the Associated Press, September 24:

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas State Board of Education adopted a resolution Friday that seeks to curtail references to Islam in Texas textbooks, as social conservative board members warned of what they describe as a creeping Middle Eastern influence in the nation's publishing industry.
The board approved the one-page nonbinding resolution, which urges textbook publishers to limit what they print about Islam in world history books, by a 7-5 vote.
Critics say it's another example of the ideological board trying to politicize public education in the Lone Star State. Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network, which advocates for religious freedom, questioned why the resolution came at a time when "anti-Muslim rhetoric in this country has reached fever pitch."

From that, you'd think those of us who criticize Islam's teachings were rampaging in the streets, setting fire to piles of tires, hurling stones at government buildings, and calling for bloodshed.

Not us. But that's precisely what has happened in Afghanistan over a Qur'an burning that never happened, and even the rumor of burnings.

"It's hard not to conclude that the misleading claims in this resolution are either based on ignorance of what's in the textbooks or, on the other hand, are an example of fear-mongering and playing politics," Miller said.
Future boards that will choose the state's next generation of social studies texts will not be bound by the resolution.
"This is an expression of the board's opinion, so it does not have an affect on any particular textbook," said David Anderson, the general counsel for the Texas Education Agency, when asked by a board member what legal weight the resolution would carry.
"So this is a cosmetic exercise?" asked board member Mavis Knight, a Democrat from Dallas.
The resolution cites world history books no longer used in Texas schools that it says devoted more lines of text to Islamic beliefs and practices than Christian ones. Chairwoman Gail Lowe said the resolution cites old books because board rules prohibit them from discussing current books more than 90 days after their adoption.
"I believe that it's happening in the current (social studies books) even though we can't cover that in the resolution," said board member Terri Leo, a Republican from Spring. The resolution sends a "clear message to publishers that it should not happen in the future."
The resolution also claims "more such discriminatory treatment of religion may occur as Middle Easterners buy into the U.S. public school textbook oligopoly, as they are doing now." [...]
The resolution concludes by warning publishers the "State Board of Education will look to reject future prejudicial social studies submissions that continue to offend Texas law with respect to treatment of the world's major religious groups by significant inequalities of coverage space-wise and by demonizing or lionizing one or more of them over others."

Eminently reasonable concerns.

Curriculum corruption is a major problem throughout the western world. The tranzi-progressive/jihadist convergence is to blame for the bulk of it; carelessness, incompetence, and sloth are to blame for the rest.

See: Aussie Muslims and Curriculum Corruption

Too much is at stake for curriculum corruption to be allowed to proceed unchecked. Kudos to Texas for doing something about it.

The beliefs and practices of a Religion are one thing, but in a history class, why not teach how that Religion came about and the impact it has had on World History?

Knowing basic facts about Muhammed and his conquests is essential to understanding Islam, I know this from reading your books Spencer!

What a mild resolution. It should go much further. And similar boards elsewhere, prompted by intelligent and aroused parents should, at a minimum, pass similar resolutions, and go from there. The record of Muslim attempts -- too often successful -- to infiltrate into the decision-making areas of textbook publishing, all under the guise of sweet-sounding encouragement of "diversity" -- is too long, and too sinister, to be ignored. And no one should be scared off by the usual nonsense about "bigotry" and "hysteria." There is no "bigotry" and there is no "hysteria" in any of these cases. Whenever wherever Islam's adherents come into contact with, and attempt to undo or remove all obstacles to the spread and then the dominance of Islam, non-Muslims slowly, and then less slowly, discover to their own horror the meaning and menace of Islam, and begin to recognize the instruments of Jihad that are employed that many do not at first reocgnize, and then those non-Muslims, shaking off their torpor, who had been content merely to lead their own lives, come to the grim conclusion that they must not allow those whom they too naively permitted into their midst to change their histories, their customs, their laws, their art, their science, their textbooks, their everything.

The "hysteria" and the "bigotry" are on the Muslim side, and that is true not only in this country, but in France, in Italy, in Great Britain, in Denmark, in the Netherlands, in Australia, in Canada, in short, everywhere in the West that Muslims have, in the last few decades, settled within, in disturbing numbers, because of the carelessness, the criminal negligence, of both political and media elites.

High school teachers should not be promoting Islam, Islamic propaganda, or any religion in our public schools. To me, that is something taught at home or in a religious institution. A high school social studies program would benefit greatly to include the history of the middle east. That is a large part of our world that simply cant be ignored. If they want to learn more beyond history; they can go to college or read some books on their own time.
I don't believe in selectively leaving out subjects based on board members political parties ideologies. That should be completely left out of the classroom. Students should only be taught objective facts not political propaganda. The texas school board is making political decisions about public education curriculum that goes far beyond issues like Islam and I think its a tragedy. My child is not going to a public school here because of this. This is exactly why public U.S. schools are rated the lowest in the developed world.

l thank God that l had my high school education in the 70's before PC came into Canada. where my Grade 10 high school teacher Mr.Leny told us that islam was spread by the sword and much more truth about it. l am aware now that probably does not happen anymore in history class in Canada. but now we have the internet and knowledge and truth can inspire so much. l thank and pray for Robert and his staff for their safety.

Good for the Texas Board of Education! They are often characterized by the MSM as Neanderthal knuckle draggers because their deliberations occasionally get bogged down in heated debates over biology and evolution. But this controversy is different. It would appear that the patient education of Americans about Islam (large kudos to Robert Spencer for his central role in this) is starting to pay off. More and more we see the various forms taken by stealth jihad being recognized and exposed. May this trend continue.

A national conversation needs to take place about how bias such as is the subject here finds its way into textbooks. My worry is that after the present flap dies down and a few cosmetic changes are made to appease the protesters, business will resume as before. The Leftist anti-Western narrative has so penetrated social science departments that it is difficult to see how their juggernaut to social self destruction can be stopped.

Good! Texas is a place where texts are placed in schools on a trial basis to see how they are received. As goes Texas, so goes the nation.

The resolution is a start. A handout should be generated correcting the textbooks in circulation and made part of the study guide this year and at any school they are in use until they are replaced.

Rather than not talking about Islam they should let Robert Spencer write a few chapters on it. :D

From page 464 (690 in the Arabic) of THE EARLIEST MUSLIM BIOGRAPHY OF MUHAMMAD, MUHAMMAD PRESIDES OVER THE BEHEADING OF 600 TO 900 JEWS:

Then [the Banu Qurayza tribe] surrendered, and the apostle [Muhammad] confined them in Medina in the quarter of d. al-Harith, a woman of B. al-Najjar. Then the apostle went out to the market of Medina (which is still its market today) and dug trenches in it. Then he sent for them and struck off their heads in those trenches as they were brought out to him in batches. Among them was the enemy of Allah Huyayy b. Akhtab and Ka`b b. Asad their chief. There were 600 or 700 in all, though some put the figure as high as 800 or 900. As they were being taken out in batches to the apostle they asked Ka`b what he thought would be done with them. He replied, 'Will you never understand? Don't you see that the summoner never stops and those who are taken away do not return? By Allah it is death!' This went on until the apostle made an end of them.

Vigilance will be required, and not just in the textbook industry, for many years to come to insure that Mohammedanism's warped view of humanity's destiny does not become the normative assessment in the collective mind of America's youth. Difficult task but not impossible by any means. Hey, who ever said combating evil was easy?

America and the West are in it up to their necks. This particular fight, the one to not only make Islam respectable in the West but predominant, will take many decades to conclude. Guaranteed. What's not guaranteed is the result, though I'm bettin' on freedom over submission. And may I say again, just for the record and because I enjoy stating it, damn Mohammed and damn Islam.

Those rightwing member of the board are going be vote out as they texas look bad in the eyes of the world. The new board will sent text books pub than letter saying the letter from the last board is declare null and voild of standing. Then they will say sorry to the Texas Book Pub that the last board act incorrectly.

ISLAMIC LAW DIVIDES BEHAVIOR INTO FIVE MAIN KINDS, BASED ON WHAT MUHAMMAD AND THE QUR'AN 1) COMMANDED, 2) RECOMMENDED,
3) WERE NEUTRAL TOWARD, 4) DISCOURAGED, AND 5) FORBADE.

A standard Islamic legal reference, certified by Al-Azhar, the chief center of Islamic and Arabic learning in the world, not only says one can kill one's children or grandchildren with impunity; impunity also extends to a Muslim who kills a non-Muslim, and to non-Muslims who kill apostates from Islam:

From page 583-584 of The Reliance of the Traveller/Umdat Al-Salik:

o1.2 The following are not subject to retaliation:
1. a child or insane person, under any circumstances...

2. a Muslim for killing a non-Muslim;

3. a Jewish or Christian subject of the Islamic state for killing an apostate from Islam...

4. a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring's offspring;

From the back cover of Reliance of the Traveller:

"There is no doubt that this translation is a valuable and important work, whether as a textbook for teaching Islamic jurisprudence to English speakers, or as a legal reference for use by scholars, educated laymen, and students in this language."
- Dr. Taha Jabir al-Alwani, president of the International Institute of Islamic Thought
The back cover also says the book
...is the first translation of a standard Islamic legal reference in a European language to be certified by Al-Azhar, the Muslim world's oldest institution of higher learning. It presents an explanative interpretation of Umdat al-Salik, a classic Sunni manual of Sacred law...

If the books told the truth about the beliefs and practices, that would be a good thing. But according to the news reports, the books do not tell the truth and leave out important information about Christianity and Judaism.

More parents should home school. It's the only way to insure the kids hear what the parents think is important. The only way to make sure untruths in text books are uncovered and exposed for what they are.

Robert, you are correct in your questioning of why it does not appear that the board has a right to decide what is used in the state. This right, however, is rapidly eroding. No Child Left Behind was the first truly LEGAL mandate coming from the federal level and disseminated to the states. Next will be the common core curriculum. When states refuse to adopt it, stimulus money is and/or will be withheld. The federal government WILL have control over the schools soon, and they WILL dictate what will be taught regardless of what the local community desires that their children learn. And, of course, this massive government control is the name of game now.

Let's get real folks. We've been hitting the snooze button for 50 of our 221 years, almost 25% of our nations life.

These texts didn't just fall off the shelves onto pupils desks.
They were created, edited, published, marketed (think in terms of payrolls of the former), and reviewed, selected and distributed (think reponsibilities) by school administrator and "educators".

This is the time to look carefully, and act surgically, at the seams right to the weaving of the thread. Or else.
Do we want the "Else".

Exactly correct, Shawmut. That the education departments have been taken over by the aging hippie radicals of the sixties and seventies, disciples of Saul Alinsky, is essentially the message that David Horowitz has been trying to broadcast for years. It has been noted that Obama is himself a self-professed admirer of Alinsky and his Marxist ideas.

If you haven't yet read it, Alinsky's book "Rules for Radicals" is highly recommended. It was written in the early 70's but describes in detail the program and methods of the far Left, a knowledge without which it is impossible to make sense of the news today.

A follow up to my previous comment about Alinski:

Check out a synopsis at http://www.crossroad.to/Quotes/communism/alinsky.htm

About a quarter way down, in the Section "Purpose," you will note the paragraph:

Alinsky's tactics were based, not on Stalin's revolutionary violence, but on the Neo-Marxist strategies of Antonio Gramsci, an Italian Communist. Relying on gradualism, infiltration and the dialectic process rather than a bloody revolution, Gramsci's transformational Marxism was so subtle that few even noticed the deliberate changes.

Like Alinsky, Mikhail Gorbachev followed Gramsci, not Lenin. In fact, Gramsci aroused Stalins's wrath by suggesting that Lenin's revolutionary plan wouldn't work in the West. Instead the primary assault would be on Biblical absolutes and Christian values, which must be crushed as a social force before the new face of Communism could rise and flourish. Malachi Martin gave us a progress report:

"By 1985, the influence of traditional Christian philosophy in the West was weak and negligible.... Gramsci's master strategy was now feasible. Humanly speaking, it was no longer too tall an order to strip large majorities of men and women in the West of those last vestiges that remained to them of Christianity's transcendent God."

Sound familiar to what we are witnessing today?

Teaching the truth about Islam's long, disturbing history would certainly be a good thing, IM—but that is not what's happening.

Most of these books present a completely white-washed account of Muslim history—while, in many cases slamming Western civilization at the same time.

It would be better to teach nothing about Islam at all than to natter on about the "Convivia" of Muslim Spain or the supposed golden age of reason and science in the Muslim world.

As a rule, I like to avoid cheap shots—but the spectacle of the semi-literate "DefenderofIslam" lecturing us on education policy is simply hilarious.

So Texan textbooks have a bias towards Islam?

Spencer should be one to pass judgement because, as we all know, Spencer is the epitome of objectiveness.

Perhaps best exemplified by a few of his statements.

"When a nuclear-powered Islamic Republic of France threatens the U.S., however, some Americans may come to regret the ease with which they swallowed and even propagated defamation and lies about anti-jihad European politicians such as Geert Wilders."

Yep, that doesn't sound like paranoid bullshit!

Maybe Spencer can justify his beliefs.

"Eminently reasonable concerns."

lol

BTW, Spencer's groupies, if I offend you I'm so sorry.

(I know how much a perverted view of the world means to you!)

"It would be better to teach nothing about Islam at all than to natter on about the "Convivia" of Muslim Spain or the supposed golden age of reason and science in the Muslim world."

Well, even Hindus agree that one of the golden ages of Hindu culture was under Mughal rule. Taj Mahal anyone?

Note that the Mughals appeared after the golden age of Islamic civilizations.

According to traeh, many of Jihadwatch's members wouldn't be subject to retaliation.

"1. a child or insane person, under any circumstances..."

I applaud Texas for taking a stand, but overall it is much worse than you think, America's schools and universities have submitted to Islam, all Islamic content in school textbooks in America must be approved by Islamic councils in accordance with Sharia law. No course at college level in America uses critical thinking regarding the history and doctrine of Islam. The approved content is essentially nothing more than a "whitewashed" politically correct version of the last 1400 years of Islamic history. One case in point here in California is the 2004 California Middle School textbook "History Alive! The Medieval World and Beyond" published by Teachers' Curriculum Institute (TCI) and approved by the California State Board of Education. Back in April 2008 I closely reviewed the Islamic content of this textbook and what I found was politically correct distortions, inaccuracies, and Islamic propaganda. The text painted a rose colored picture of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad and failed to cover any of the negative aspects of Islam such as the fact that it is a totalitarian ideology that has declared war on the West and whose stated goal is total world domination under an Islamic Caliphate. Recently, we heard of Wellesley Middle School students near Boston being taken on field trips to a mosque to study Islamic architecture and ended up receiving Islamic indoctrination!! All Americans should be outraged that this is happening to our young and impressionable children. Moreover, I find it very disturbing that the Wellesley Middle School, TCI, and the California state school system have facilitated the targeting of our children with this Islamic propaganda under the guise of education. Given the fact that America's education system has submitted to Islamic censoring, it is no wonder most Americans are totally ignorant of the truth about Islam and the existential threat it poses to America!

People everywhere are frightened to tell the truth about Muslims - they are as human as anybody; however, they follow a book that sanctions cold blooded murder, and even rewards it. But we cannot burn Muslims because they are so very close to being cured of their attachment to a deeply flawed bible called the Koran - why is it flawed? Simply because it justifies murder. I know you would burn Hitlers book because of the many psychotic things it says. But the Koran is ten times as murderous as Hitlers best seller. So, why hypocritically say you are against book burning big time but in the interest of free speech it should go unpunished except for harsh scoldings leveled against those people who would dare to do such an unpopular thing? It is very good to burn the Koran, and very bad to scold those who do bravely burn this book that justifies and rewards out and out murder! They are heroes, and what they do will, in the long run, save many lives. We only have one enemy here, and that is the Mighty Koran, the enemy of all freedom, even the freedom to live an innocent life.

....................

Well, Evil Taqiyya Artist seems rather short on logic here, which should come as no surprise.

The incredibly beautiful Taj Mahal is one of two things: either it is, as the legend goes, an elaborate Muslim tomb built in the style of a Hindu temple; or it is a Hindu temple "re-purposed" by Muslims, much as was the case with Constantinople's great Christian cathedral Hagia Sophia and countless other buildings throughout the lands conquered by Islam.

How either of these scenarios—in and of itself—indicate that Hindu culture was allowed to flourish under oppressive Muslim rule is entirely unclear.

As a Texan with elementary school-aged children, I pay close attention to what the SBOE is doing and to what goes in to the textbooks anc curriculae. I was very happy to hear about this.
