The New York Times swings its hatchet at Pamela Geller (and misses)

NYTGellerOct2010.jpgApparently the photographer didn't get the "demonize" memo

Back in June I wrote this about the notorious Leftist ideologue/pseudo-journalist Dave Weigel and mainstream media reporters in general:

In Annie Hall, Woody Allen's character Alvy Singer says: "Lyndon Johnson is a politician. You know the ethics those guys have? It's like-uh, a notch underneath child molester."

As for reporters, I wouldn't say that they're that bad. Heck, I'll even grant that they're a notch above child molester. But particularly when it comes to Islam and jihad, they're generally agenda-driven, short-sighted, and above all, simply dishonest. Not so much in terms of outright lies, but in terms of spin: by omission and juxtaposition, by what they say and what they don't say, and by how they choose quotations as well as by how they frame them in a story, they attempt to lead the reader to the conclusion they wish him or her to draw.

All that is accurate as far as it goes, but overly generous. Reporters are worse than that. They are people who make a living by pretending to like or sympathize with or at least be well-disposed toward people they despise in order to get them to open up; then they scan over the results with all the zeal of a crusading prosecutor, operating according to the principle that anything you say can and will be used against you. I can't imagine being so duplicitous on a regular basis, smiling in the faces of some people while cursing them behind their backs, but such is the life of a mainstream media reporter when interviewing a conservative.

In the interview excerpts, Pamela Geller speaks, and can be heard by people of good will. The article is something else again -- although even there, her voice cannot be completely silenced or distorted. But Times reporters Barnard and Feuer were certainly trying. Pamela has already pointed out many of its smears, distortions and inaccuracies here. My favorite bit was this:

Just to show how avid and careful they were in their quest for the facts, they have me video blogging from an Israeli beach. Won't Fort Lauderdale be surprised to find out that the Zionist war machine is now occupying Florida beaches?

And this, showing the viciousness of the Times's spin-by-omission:

Here is credentialed journalism: they say without explanation that I "posted doctored pictures of Elena Kagan, the Supreme Court justice, in a Nazi helmet." They don't bother to mention that the Kagan photoshop came after it was revealed that Kagan had cited in her thesis a German Marxist who became a Nazi when Hitler took power. They claim that I said that "a young Barack Obama slept with 'a crack whore,'" without mentioning that in that post I was making a point about unfair journalists (like these Times writers), constructing a reductio ad absurdum about media bias.

But there is much more. Be sure to read it all.

The article is entitled "Outraged, and Outrageous," by Anne Barnard and Alan Feuer in the New York Times, October 10. A few comments:

It is in this genteel setting that Ms. Geller, 52 and a single mother of four, wakes each morning shortly after 7, switches on her laptop and wages a form of holy war through Atlas Shrugs, a Web site that attacks Islam with a rhetoric venomous enough that PayPal at one point branded it a hate site.

"A form of holy war." Note the condescension, and the blistering irony, as Pamela herself noted -- the Times readily uses this language of her work, but will "never, ever discuss the real holy war against the West."

...critics say her influence is serious: a spreading fear of Islam and a dehumanization of Muslims comparable to the sometimes-violent anti-Semitism and anti-Catholicism of earlier eras. Even some of her former right-wing allies say she has gone too far....

The "former right-wing allies" in question are not a "some," but just a one: libelblogger Charles Johnson of the lies-and-hate site Little Green Footballs, who is notorious in the blogosphere for having betrayed his principles and all his former associates -- but of course the Times doesn't mention any of that.

Note also how Barnard and Feuer echo the now-common theme that opposition to the jihad and Islamic supremacism is comparable to antisemitism and anti-Catholicism. Christopher Hitchens took up that farrago recently regarding antisemitism, and the same thing can be said of anti-Catholicism: "Yes, we all recall the Jewish suicide bombers of that period, as we recall the Jewish yells for holy war, the Jewish demands for the veiling of women and the stoning of homosexuals, and the Jewish burning of newspapers that published cartoons they did not like. What is needed from the supporters of this very confident faith is more self-criticism and less self-pity and self-righteousness."

Opposition to Park51 grew -- and with it, antipathy for Islam. A New York Times poll last month found that two-thirds of city residents thought the project should be relocated. A Quinnipiac University poll of likely New York State voters showed that 90 percent of Republicans -- compared to 34 percent of Democrats -- thought that a mosque near ground zero was wrong. And the portion of Americans with a favorable view of Islam reached its lowest ebb since 9/11 -- 37 percent, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll....

How appallingly stupid do Barnard and Feuer think that Times readers are? People have an unfavorable view of Islam because of Pamela Geller? Or Newt Gingrich, or Sarah Palin? Barnard and Feuer would prefer that you not think about Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood jihadist; Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Christmas underwear jihadist; Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, who killed one soldier and murdered another in a jihad shooting outside a military recruiting station in Little Rock, Ark.; Faisal Shahzad, the Times Square jihadist; Khaled Sheikh Mohammed and Osama bin Laden on 9/11; the London jihad bombers of July 7, 2005; and so many others.

Mr. Spencer says Ms. Geller's "genius" is translating his sometimes-obscure concepts into vernacular, plus a "charm and appeal" that motivates people to take action....

I did say that Pamela Geller had a genius for communicating ideas in a way that helped people see their importance and the need to take action, but I didn't say anything about my "sometimes-obscure concepts." I didn't know I had any of those (although to be sure, Barnard may have gotten that impression from my enthusiastically telling her about a major paper I wrote in 1983 or so about the possible historical derivations of Qur'an 4:157!).

Mr. Johnson of Little Green Footballs, a former comrade, attacked Ms. Geller and Mr. Spencer -- whose interest in Islam began with family lore about a Greek great-grandfather killed by Turks -- for meeting with "neo-Nazis." They insisted they were not responsible for the views of everyone who stands in a room with them (though they have lobbed similar guilt-by-association accusations at Muslims, including the people behind Park51).

I challenge Barnard and Feuer to produce even a single example where Pamela or I have ever accused anyone connected with Park 51 with holding the views of someone standing in a room with them. I challenge them to produce a single example of our carrying out a campaign of lies, defamation, character assassination and personal destruction remotely comparable to that which libelblogger Charles Johnson has carried out against both of us. They can't, of course, because we haven't. Everything we've said about the people associated with the Ground Zero mega-mosque is based on their own words and deeds.

And that bit about my great-grandfather -- the Times is implying that I am out for some kind of personal revenge, like some "Islamophobic" Inigo Montoya. In reality, the "family lore" I heard from my grandparents about growing up in the Ottoman Empire was uniformly and warmly positive. My great-grandfather was murdered in 1918; I never knew him, and his story was never part of "family lore." In fact, I didn't even know it had happened until two decades after my "interest in Islam" was in full swing. So how did Anne Barnard find out about it? Because she asked me if anyone in my family had been killed at the time that my grandparents were exiled from Anatolia. I answered her truthfully. And she made that the linchpin of my interest in Islam. This is what they do.

Through it all, however, despite the best (i.e., worst) efforts of these utterly integrity-free Times reporters, I think the indomitable spirit of my colleague shines through. I am proud to work with her.

The MSM is lost. The question is when is the vast majority of people here going to see them for what they are: a tool of the islamic left coalition...

Both of your blogs, Jihad Watch and Atlas Shrugs are excellent and I am a fan of each. Keep up the great work, please.

It's a sad day indeed for journalism when people turn to blogs for information and to the news media for light entertainment, which is what I do.

That really is a great photo of Pam, it captures so much of her intelligence and focus.

Robert, you never came up with an "obscure" concept since I've been reading this site. Since I refuse to have a Koran in my home, I use Jihad Watch to learn to "know the enemy" because of the clarity with which the information is presented. Btw, since I also won't have a Mein Kampf in the house, does anyone know if there is a reputable site to read it from so I can compare it with the Koran?

(In case anyone wonders, yes, proud heathen though I am, I do have a bible, same one I've had since I was 10.)

The New York Times, like 99% of "journalism" today is waste paper not fit to housebreak puppies on. These "reporters" deserve to be treated with the utmost contempt, and if they keep this up under conditions of outright government censorship or of war, they should be treated as fifth columnists and traitors.

The New York Times is no longer taken seriously by any serious thinker (I challenge anyone to prove me wrong on this contention). Unfortunately, there are many non-serious thinkers in America right now and the vast majority of them are on the Left. And they're self-righteous in the extreme. So, they're not only wrong but obnoxious.

A double battle here----Islam and the Western Left. The former is evil and the latter is, for sundry reasons but all bad ones, an enabler of evil. This is the reality of our times.

Robert we all know how the media is a lost cause when it comes to seeking the truth about anything. It won't stop the truth from being told which you and Pamela have done over and over again. America is waking up to the truth about these rags called journalism. They have sold themselves to the devil and will try to twist everything to their agenda. It won't work. Keep the faith because the Truth will set us free. Their interest is to try to lead the sheep to the slaughter. You are not sheep you are shepherds because you are waking the flock as to the existing dangers before all of us in regards to Islam and Sharia. Thanks for all you do.

Didn't the New York Times do enough damage for centuries in their whitewashing of Herr Hitler?

"In mid-March 1933 Frederick Birchall, who was then serving as New York Times Berlin bureau chief, was in the United States. In a nationally broadcast CBS radio speech he denied that Hitler was a dictator. He described him as a 'bachelor and a vegetarian and he neither drinks nor smokes. His whole life, his whole thought are given to this National Socialist movement and he has taken upon himself the hardest job that ever a man could undertake'. He also urged listeners to dismiss the thought that the Nazis would engage in 'slaughter of their enemies or racial oppression in any vital degree'....On March 12 the Times ran an editorial complimenting Hitler for for urging his followers to 'refrain from acts of individual terrorism'. In July Times columnist Anne O'Hare McCormick offered readers a benign, almost enraptured description of her interview with the Chancellor. She described his 'curiously childlike and candid' blue eyes, his voice which was 'as quiet as his black tie' and his frequent smile, and concluded that when he talked he was 'indubitably sincere'. In his conversation with her, Hitler declared that acts of discrmination were not directed primarily against Jews. but 'against the Communists and all elements that demoralized and destroyed us'."

Beyond Belief: The American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust 1933-1945, by Deborah E. Lipstadt (who incidentally supported Barack Hussein Obama to her everlasting discredit).

Shame on Lipstadt, you'd think she'd be one of the people certain to see through the Obamullah's facade.

And what a nice little bit of their fine tradition of fearless and perceptive journalism for the Slimes to be proud of. Adolf and his baby blue eyes. Wonder how they explain that one away.

Well said, Robert. Both you and Pamela are doing a great job in educating people about the threat that Islam poses to all western societies. The NY Times is doing the work of the OIC in portraying anyone who knows anything about, as Hugh has said, the "texts, tenets, and teachings" of Islam as fringe elements at best, and deranged at worst. They couldn't be more wrong, and a growing number of people who are studying Islam and visiting sites like JW and Atlas Shrugs know it, which is why "the portion of Americans with a favorable view of Islam" will continue to decline.

No one pays much attention to what the NY Times has to say anymore.

Keep up the good work.

I gave her a piece of my mind on her blog back in 2008. I am guessing by now, like many American Jews who supported Obama, she is having some misgivings. I hope so at any rate.

JW readers shouldn't forget that the NYT was "awarded" (heh, heh) a Pulitzer for its really "truthful" reporting of its star reporter Walter Duranty covering Stalin's USSR. Duranty's shameful cover-up of the deliberate starvation (in the years of the early 1930s) of the Ukrainian people because they wouldn't submit to stalin's collectivist totalitarianism.

Anyone detect similarities in the NYT's love for totalitarianism, one of hammer & sickle fame, another with a green crescent. Incidentally, during the 1930s the NYT had plenty of favorable things to say about Herr Adolph.

Seriously now, how long now before the New York Times adopts BatBoy as their mascot?

She is our inspiration in a world gone mad. Thank you for every effort, Pamela -- it is not lost.

~~~
BTW -- Great photo! If only eyes could drill a hole into the brains of their recipients...
I find it amusing that western scholars, journalist, academics etc cannot get one simple thing past the medieval wall of arrogance thay have constructed around their meagre brains that criticizing Islam is not equal to criticizing muslims.
Whilst there are moderate muslims there is no moderate Islam. To challenge, which Spencer, Geller et al do, the constructs of this bedoiun tribal tale should be a naturla part of any education on religion.
It was astonishing for me the other day to have met a German PHD in religion (Islamic Studies) who had not read or heard about Bukhari, Muslim, Tabari, Ishaq, Isham, Malikis, Hanafi's, Safi's etc. She was not even aware of the doctrine of abrogation.
She is going to the German face to deal with the Islamic world! Europe is doomed...
The MSM newspapers and magazines constantly wonder why they are losing readership. The MSM tv news shows also wonder why FOX is beating the crap out of them in the ratings.
They haven't a clue.
As for the NYT newspaper, I only have one thing to say per their "Journalistic credibility" - Jayson Blair.
Of course they are "sometimes-obscure concepts".
Truth is conveniently obscure to anyone that refuses to accept it.
Well...The New York Times Building is at least 5 miles from Ground Zero,so I can see how they'd be confused.
It being so far away,you see....
I don't know how anyone can take the NYT seriously since they totally destroyed what credibility they had with Judith Miller making up one bullshit article after another about WMD's in Iraq before we turned it from a secular totalitarian state into a Shariah compliant totalitarian state that is basically a vassal of Iran.
New York Times = bird cage liner.
May their ratings keep dropping with their readership. Long ago when I was a youth in school we read the New York Times for its intelligent content and discussed it in class. This was long before the post-modern educational system's self imposed idiocy policy of "no one left behind", where even the dumbest lout is treated as an educational 'success'. They created their own intellectual misery.
Back then we were expected to think critically and actually learn something. Now the snake is biting its own tail, the readership of the New York Times has been so "dumbed down" to where they feel they can 'talk down' to them with idiot reporting. But this backfires, because intelligent readers are abandoning the Times, and "the times they are a changing". Who really cares what the New York Times, or the Washington Post, or at times even the Wall Street Journal has to say? Surely one doesn't really read it for content. The ads are more interesting. Then there is the alternative news made so accessible to anyone with a screen and keyboard. That's where it's at nowadays, up front, not the Times.
So if they attempt character assassination against those who speak truthfully about the threat of some primitive 7th century Warlord ideology posing as 'religion', journalistically terrified of reporting their evil intent, let them understand that we don't care. More and more of us don't care. They, the Times and their ilk, are the dinosaurs of modern communications. Furthermore, they're tree killers, their rag useful to cover canary cage bottoms, but not for real news. We value our freedom of speech, our freedom of inquiry and understanding, and our freedom of the truth. If the Times can't get that, they're out of touch with reality. Times change... They can be ignored.
"The New York Times swings its hatchet at Pamela Geller (and misses)"
Oops, must have rolled a "1".
The NYT hardly ever ceases to infuriate me with their insane bias. Every day it seems a new biased story about the left's latest punching bag, Isreal, or anti-jihadists or Christians.
"that bit about my great-grandfather -- the Times is implying that I am out for some kind of personal revenge".
NY-slimes geeks are now amateur psychologists?
They tried that with Wilders too.
Because he has some Jewish family connections as well as some Indonesia roots (if that much) Its just too pathetic. The media lapdogs are the dumbest and most primitive swine on earth. And yet, they think they can manipulate public opinion.
McCarthy didn't even scratch the surface. Our society has long been infiltrated and under wandered by dark forces, people. And they don't have our best interest at heart.
It's all one big power kick for the degenerate MSM, after all, they're responsible for a complete unknown elected to be the leader of the free world...
Pamela Geller - beautiful, smart and passionate. There is nothing those pathetic hacks at the Times can say that will change anything. She is an intelligent and articulate advocate for the cause of freedom. This comes through time and again in the Times 'interview' no matter how hard they try to twist, spin and distort any scintilla of information that will fit Barnard and Feuer's attempt to continue the smear and label Pamela as a hate-mongering Islamophobe.
Its pathetic. I congratulate Pamela for having the courage and fortitude to participate in that interview, even when she would have known how it would have been presented.
Unfortunately with such examples reputable journalism is fast becoming an oxymoron and we must increasingly turn to the only 'free' media in the blogosphere for our information. Thank the God of your choice for Jihad Watch and Atlas Shrugs.
One thing Pamela may be grateful for, they can still take fantastic photographs!
Cheers,
Doc
Sheik
I heard that bit about Wilders' family background.
The way I see it is: all it proves is that he's Dutch through and through.
Think about it: native Dutch, intermarried with Jews (who were offered asylum in the Netherlands, after they fled Spain; most famous Jew being Spinoza), and with...Indonesians (now, if said Indonesian female forebear was from a Muslim family, she defied the sharia ban on marriage with 'infidels' to marry a handsome Dutchman, more power to her!, and if she was Hindu, well, cross-cultural marriages are what happen in colonial outposts; most likely, whether of Hindu or Muslim origin, this Indonesian lady in Geert's family tree would have - at least nominally - converted to Christianity, or else done an Ayaan Hirsi Ali and joined the Enlightenment).
Mostly Dutch, plus a dash of Jewish and Malay - if that's the case, then Geert sums up in himself the nature and history of his country. What's more, though identifying as an agnostic, he was baptised Catholic - and his wife is Hungarian (don't know whether her background is Catholic, Protestant or secular - could be any one of the three - but I gather her name is Christina, or that's how I heard it in his speech after the election).
"Mein Kampf" is a children's book compared to the quran. See for yourself:
I loved your column about Pamela Geller. Until I read it I knew nothing of her. Ironically what I am left with after reading your column is admiration for Pamela Geller for bravely speaking the truth when so many have become too "politically correct" to even dare suggest that "Islamophobia" simply does not exist- it is an oxymoron. A phobia by definition is an " irrational fear of an event that is unlikely to happen" such as getting eaten up by a shark. Well the fact remains that when I get on an airplane they do not spray me with "shark repellant" but I do have to take off my shoes- even a bottle of water has become a weapon because of terrorism (over 16000 separate incidents since 911) perpetrated by Muslims in the name of Islam.
In any case I will be forwarding your column to all of my colleagues. With a few changes to the title "Outrage and Outrageous" to "Outrageously Brave". Your column makes Pamela Geller look like a modern day hero! Pamela Geller is genuinely brave and committed to exposing a deadly ideology of hate and intolerance. Just look at what happened to Theo Van Gogh for exposing the horrors of Islam.
Thanks again for introducing me to this brave and eloquent woman.
And you say she is single!
NY TIMES COLUMN BACKFIRES. POINTS TO HOW PAMELA GELLER IS STANDING UP AGAINST AN IDEOLOGY OF SUPREMACY NOT SEEN SINCE THE NAZI ERA!
Pamela,
We are following you in England and I am so glad we have some very courageous and articulate people to express how we are being manipulated and led by the nose.
More power to your elbow.
The same New York Times who played an evil role in the slander, scourging and crucifiction of Serbia in 1999.
The same New York Times who published the 4-page "front-page story" in September of 1982 by the cowardly buffoon Thomas Friedman skreeching against "Israel's massacre of the Palestinians" in Beirut, the vile propaganda piece that was instrumental in the ruination of Israel's glorious victory in Lebanon. The same New York Times who enthusiastically hailed England's evil "White Paper" of May 17, 1939, denying millions of European Jews any refuge anywhere in the world right before the Holocaust. The same New York Times that covered up and suppressed any information about the mass extermination of Jews as it was being carried out during the Holocaust.
Cowardly Sulzberger Goebbelses.
Ruslan Tokhchukov, EnragedSince1999.
Hubby and I were reading Jihad Watch together last night, and when we came across this picture he said, "WOW, who's that?!!? I said, "You know who that is, that's Pamela Geller - I know, isn't she stunning!!" ...and I meant to add smart, too, but I don't think that my husband cared much about that last night, lol ...
You are so beautiful and smart, Pamela! ...we love you! Godspeed!
When it comes to mainstream media what one has to take into account is that they reflect the interests of the current centers of power (political,business etc).
They do not have an interest in protecting citizens from Islamic supremacy snd truth telling.
But they do have an interest in expanding business interests and maintaining business interests in the Islamic world.
Firing up controversy about Islam and reframing it is not in line with the elite consensus.
So i'm not at all surprised at the biased attitude among the MSN.
I don't believe it's a left/right issue.
What hurts the bottom line is simply to be pushed to the side or it might hurt sales.
Look at how all MSN in the USA censored the Muhammad cartoons.Thats self censorship because controversy is dangerous for profits.
