Dearborn public schools pay $24,500 to settle lawsuit with Christian wrestling coach fired for his faith by Muslim principal

The transition to Sharia even in Dearborn is not going to be without a speed bump here and there. An update on this story. "Dearborn schools pay to settle lawsuit by coach," from Associated Press, October 6 (thanks to Dave):

DETROIT - A wrestling coach who claimed he lost his job at a suburban Detroit high school because of his Christian faith has settled the lawsuit for $24,500.

Gerald Marszalek, who is 65, also received $500 from Dearborn Public Schools in exchange for waiving any claim of age discrimination.

Marszalek was a coach at Fordson High School, where Muslim students are a majority. He said his troubles with the school's Muslim principal, Imad Fadlallah, began in 2005 when a volunteer assistant, the Rev. Trey Hancock, introduced some wrestlers to Christianity during a camp away from school....

Fadlallah recently retired as Fordson principal. In August, two award-winning teachers filed a lawsuit accusing him of harassment because they're not Muslim.

Good...in general, we need more lawsuits against mohammedans.

$24,000? Hmmm. That seems at least a zero too short for a discrimination lawsuit. I wonder why.

Just my opinion, mind you, but I think settling for a mire $24,000 was a bit puny. Puny because Coach Marszalek should have 'taken them to the cleaners' especially since his volunteer assistant, Rev. Hancock, was only teaching the Truth of Christ to the hopelessly lost.

I should rightly modify that last statement to include "only exercising his right" to teach the Truth of Christ to the hopelessly lost. I'm reminded of the recent fiasco when the Christian evangelists were arrested by the Gestapo-like, Dearborn Police for attempting to spread the Gospel at the Dearborn Arab Festival.

Take a look at the high school football program setting sharia norms that non-muslims have to adhere to: practicing at night, fasting, etc. And no restraint exercised by the Muslim majority. Fordson High needs a real pigskin.

We need more Americans who are sick of having Islam imposed upon them to sue. Amicus briefs, anyone?

Maybe the Muslims in Dearborn are worried about losing some of their people to Christianity. It is indeed happening in Western countries, not least the United States. I couldn't help but notice that one of the Dearborn evangelists was named Nabeel Qureshi, which does not seem like an old Copt, Maronite, Melkite, or Assyrian name; and one of the preachers who helped Rifqa Bary had a Muslim-sounding surname. Muslim Immigration to the West has been two-edged in other ways, too.

Muslims will discriminate when they are in a position of power and majority. This trend will happen in all of America and the world. Now,look at United Nations, the Muslim lobbying group is always trying to push their agendas in many ways.NON-MUSLIM WORLD IS GOING TO FACE SUCH KIND OF DISCRIMINATION AND HARRASSMENT IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE IF WE KEEP IGNORING SLOW ISLAMIZATION OF USA,CANADA,EUROPE,SOUTH AMERICA, AUSTRALIA,
NEW ZEALAND,SOUTH-EAST ASIA AND AFRICA.Every day and night twenty-four hours a day, they are trying to outbreed non-Muslim populations, stealthily imposing their way of life in non-Muslim societies, demanding for Muslims' seperate rights in work-place,schools,and any public places using CAIR, or their Muslim organizations.WE NON-MUSLIMS ARE GOING TO BECOME STRANGERS IN OUR OWN LANDS LIVING IN FEAR AMID INTIMIDATIONS FROM MUSLIMS ! ALL THIS IS A REALITY,NOT A POSSIBILITY.WAKE UP MY GUYS NOW FOR OUR CHILDREN.ISLAM AND MUSLIMS ARE SERIOUS TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOAL OF GLOBAL DOMINATION !

Had the situation been reversed, and the muslim was the plaintiff, he'd have sued for, and been awarded, far more than a mere $24,000.

I have mixed feelings about this. Being Jewish, I also would object to Christians (or Muslims or anyone else) proselytizing my children without my consent. I was proselytized at least twice that I can remember as a child. Once was when I was eleven and once when I was seventeen, both times by Jews for Jesus, both times without the knowledge or consent of my parents. It's just plain wrong. At least wait till after high school.

Doesn't mean the coach should have lost his job. I don't know because the article didn't provide a lot of facts about the case. Certainly he shouldn't proselytize children during any school affiliated activities. Whether the camp was school-affiliated or not and whether or not the volunteer acted with the knowledge or consent of the coach I don't know.

Unfortunately, many people don't know or care how to properly raise children. But I think it is vastly preferable to allow parents to raise their own children rather than the communist-like ideal of having the state raise children. Our society tries to at least protect children from physically abusive parents. What constitutes mental/emotional/psychological abuse is harder to define. It's harder to know where to draw the lines. But on the reverse side, I feel strongly that parents should be allowed to shield their children as best they are able from things they find objectionable, whether it is evangelizing or porn or whatever.

On the other hand, personally, at this point in time in history and place, I wouldn't mind if all Muslims converted to Christianity. In certain times and places in history and even today, some Christians haven't been so nice (but whether it was because of or in spite of Christianity is an interesting debate. I used to think the former, but recently I've begun to think it was a little bit of both). But for the most part, on the whole and as a group, they've grown up and embraced 21st century morality. That's something that Muslims, on the whole and as a group, seem incapable or unwilling to do.

As serious as 'they' may well be, the dhow of Muhammedanism is running the tide to the rocky shelf. A kingdom divided , those words will never drown.

Marsazalek coached wrestling for 35 years at Dearborn Public Schools, amassed more than 450 wins, was inducted into the Michigan High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, and had been named "Sportsman of the Year" by the All-American Athletic Association.

Fadlallah recently retired as Fordson principal. In August, two award-winning teachers filed a lawsuit accusing him of harassment because they're not Muslim.
....................

This is happening *in America*. This is happening in *a public school*.

Fordson High was originally built by Henry Ford in 1922 in honor of his son, Edsel. Today it is described as being "95% Arab". I'm not sure what percentage of this is Muslim, but it must be quite high.

Fordson had their football team practice in the middle of the night during Ramadan. The documentary "Fordson: Faith, Fasting, Football" tries to make Islam seem perfectly "All American".

It describes the "plucky underdogs" thusly: "The story is set against the backdrop of the stunningly beautiful Fordson High School, a public high school built by Henry Ford in 1922, which was once all white, but now boasts a 98% Arab population. As our team readies itself to play its affluent, cross town rival, we unearth the adversity faced by a community that is desperately holding onto its Islamic faith and trying to gain acceptance from their fellow U.S. citizens in post 9-11 America."

Here's Debbie Schlussel with more on Fordson, from 2006:

"USA’s Hezbollah High: Dearbornistan Terrorists’ Principal is Hezbollah Leader’s Relative; Days Off For Extremist Campaigns"

http://www.debbieschlussel.com/2263/usas-hezbollah-high-dearbornistan-terrorists-principal-is-hezbollah-leaders-relative-days-off-for-extremist-campaigns/

The school's motto is "Mens Manus et Vis", which was intended to mean "Mind, Hand, and Power"—in other words, 'education and ideas, plus hard work, leads to success'. It can also, however, be read as "Mind, Hand, and *Violence*".

Given the number of Jihadists that are starting to come out of Fordson, this might be more apropos:

"Dearbornistan terror arrests: Flight docs and 600+ tracphones"

http://michellemalkin.com/2006/08/09/dearbornistan-terror-arrestsflight-docs-and-600-tracphones/

Some good news. Though 24,000 does seem peanuts, it IS a victory.
Now I hope the other 2 teachers who were also discriminated against should sue and win against this school.

Christian/Jewish/Muslim, etc. (or practioners of ANY religion or ideology for that matter) who are public employees or volunteers at ANY public school or other taxpayer-funded entity, have NO business preaching their particular religious faith in any of its nuances to students or co-workers.

As a child, I was subjected to religious imperialism by teachers who thought they had some mandate to preach their particular brand of Christianity (insert ideology of choice) to their captive audience. One English teacher constantly interjected biblical quotes, while a Mormon Spanish teacher thought Spanish culture included anti-evolution films produced by his church. This religious imperialism was repulsive then, and it remains repulsive.

As an adult, I dealth with coworkers on two occassions sticking Bibles and missionary tracts into my mailbox, or even making charged theological "points" designed to show me their contempt for my Judaism when they thought I was listening.

In a public arena, we need to be respectful of our co-workers and not assume they want a religious lecture. We are also responsible for not taking advantage of our students, who after all are often a captive audience.

I'm a gay, biracial guy from Cambridge, MA. I've been a stealth reader of this site for a while, because despite my general Liberalism, on this issue of Muslim extremism (especially their evil treatment of gays and women) I'm with you guys. And I'm pretty disgusted by the complete silence on the Left, especially gay blogs and activists on all the women and gay men being murdered every day in the Middle East (but you'd be surprised at the response to this kind of thing on gay blogs; it's actually 50-50 with people just as pissed off as most of you are and letting the p.c. appeasers have it.) And I agree that the Christians here are not anywhere near as dangerous (thankfully we have a Constitution and a robust, secular population that keeps them in check.) But stories like this particular one about this principle kinda makes me think you guys have an agenda as well and it's not fighting Muslim extremism so much as an anger at the fact that you can't impose Christianity the same way on our population that Islamists do in the Middle East and are trying to do in Europe. What in God's name is wrong with a principle firing someone for EVANGELIZING to students? We have, thankfully, a separation of Church & State. It was the coach who was out of line here, by evangelizing in a PUBLIC school. What's going on in Europe & the Middle East should be making you wary of any religious imposition into public life. Worship as you wish; don't bring it into the public sphere if you have a government job.

Let the Dearborn Board of Education know how you feel.

They could use our opinions.

If only Coach Marszalek and Rev. Hancock had "reverted" to Islam. Then their religious work would have been halal.

Welcome! Many posters here, myself included, have asked why there is such silence from the Gay and Women's Rights Groups. This is notably curious due to the fact that as members of those groups they/you will be, and are, first to suffer at the creeping impostion of this vile ideology.

I maintain that we can only win this war when individuals, yes, one person at a time, are, like youself, fearlessly educated on the implications of islam and assiduously educate others - one person at a time.

We ARE at WAR.

I never would have settled for such a trifling amount. Whats going on here? There are plenty of precedents being set all around the country where much more money than that is being awarded for much more minor infringments. I've about had it.

@ james_cambridge

Reading the post, there is no suggestion that Gerald Marszalek was EVANGELIZING. It states that his troubles began when..."a volunteer assistant, the Rev. Trey Hancock, introduced some wrestlers to Christianity during a camp away from school....".

I happen to agree that state and church should be separate and would therefore expect a Principal to be ostracised if he got rid of a teacher because of his faith. Instead, he was allowed to resign.

Welcome Mr. Cambridge!

I too have mixed feelings about the case and would like equal treatment of all religin at public schools. However in the particular case a muslim principal is highly unlikely to uphold the secular standards when exposure to non-islamic "propaganda" is the case.
I am a practicing Christian and would be terified at the perspective of any branch of Christianity turning into the totalitarian mid-eastern church/state monstroucity. I have seen too well the price that Christianity has paid for getting intertwined with state affairs, and have never liked the result.
In this particular case the alarmimng message is something else: there are already quite a few cases when being non-muslim has had disastrous consequences for people all over the world. USA should not be a place where this is possible. Islam is not and never was a "religion" only. Even as far as the "religion" component is concerned, all things muslims do outside of their homes and mosques will be debated, and possibly rejected. The history of intolerance of any other ideas by muslims is known well enough, so everyone of us here can understand the particular consequences that muslim rule will have them. That is if we fail to stop it from happening.

And what might Trey Hancock be expected to do if some students asks him, "what about Christianity?" or "What about Jesus Christ?" My usual line is that they are free to pick up a copy of the New Testament if they're interested (I am a public school teacher, and a good number of my students have been Muslim from Africa, the ME, and South Asia). If they wish to ask me after school, they're welcome to do so.

On the other hand, the misrepresentations I see in our "history" textbooks ("Calvin taught that the elect are the elite of Christian society..." for example, when Calvin actually taught that the elite were all who were truly believing, whether prince or pauper) make me wish to scream. I have satisfied myself with polite letters to publishers, some of which have been answered with boilerplate.

Still, I wonder why so many in my profession feel that only the Christian student needs to be challenged; never the Muslim, Freudian, Logical Positivist, Marxist...

But it is also the case that I've had kids tell me, "Please don't call me Aisha; but [tribal African name]. Mother and I became Christians and Dad's mad at us..." when I called roll. My guess is that from time to time, such things happen even in "Dearbornistan".

Thank you for the welcome SSL. Like I said before, Most gay guys, at least judging by those I know and those I know online, are very aware of what the Muslims are up to. I guarantee you a fair amount of those at the Ground Zero mosque protests were gay.

With all due respect Rookwood, what else could "introduced some students to Christianity" mean except that he was Evangelizing. I'm not religious in the least (I'm the definition of a disgusted, lapsed, Catholic) but the article seems pretty clear. Anyway, it's nice to finally comment and be here officially.

Thank you for the welcome too! And it's really great to see a religious Christian who holds this point of view. If you guys remember, back in the day when porn was exploding back in the 1970's, Feminists and Christians actually formed a coalition to fight it (not that I in any way agree with what they did,) at least according to a documentary I saw recently on Deep Throat. The only thing that keeps Christians, Feminists and the Gay community from working together on the Muslim menace, especially in Europe where many Gays & Women are under direct attack, is the hostility many (not all) Christians, especially Evangelicals, have for those of us who are gay and some of the residual hostility between Christians and Feminists as well. If we weren't fighting our own culture war and creating such nasty animosity as a result, we could have been strong allies on this issue! A Left-Right coalition is the only thing that can wake people up in this country and abroad (after all, no one knows how divided we are in this country like the Islamists do; it's what they count on.)

Excommie and James_Cambridge:

Sorry to pop your bubbles, but we Evangelicals aren't the European Roman Catholic Church at it's most post-Napoleonic defensive that the Marxists like to make you think we are. Our political tradition is one of compact and covenant; not clerical or royal absolutism.

Also, regardless of what Margaret Attwood says, we aren't out to make women illiterate, barefoot slaves. My wife comes from a quarter of the globe where the whole idea of female literacy was implanted by our missionaries.

While we find homosexual practice disgusting, we aren't stoning anyone, in case you've not noticed.
